Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.
Considering that I teach students who are trained to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of help is that ” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.
“Surgery(外科手术)”, one replied. I was pretty shocked by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job. One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special things, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows. You can get at least 5cm taller!”
At that point, I was shocked. I am short. I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of pain just to be a few centimeters taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!
It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.
No one is born perfect, however, magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm (标准). Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that you must go for it, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.
41. In the author’s opinion, “outside help” means ________.
A. getting help from relatives or family friends B. going under the knife
C. trying to be perfect D. getting ahead of others
42. Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to ________.
A. marry a better man/woman B. become a model
C. get an advantage over others in job-hunting D. attract more admirers
43. What was the author’s reaction towards the girl’s decision
A. Excited. B. Surprised. C. Happy. D. Angry.
44. According to the passage, the author believes that ________.
A. everyone should go for perfection, whatever the cost
B. it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs
C. media should be criticised for misleading young people to do surgery
D it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career
45. What does the author think of his height
A. He dislikes being called a short man. B. He tries to increase his height through surgery.
C. He always wears shoes with thick soles to hide the fact. D. He just accepts it as it is.
Many companies are pushing their employees to get back to the office, considering it critical for maintaining the corporate culture. According to Treehugger, the third industrial revolution would be the end of the office and in the future, it would be a coffee shop: “The major purpose of an office in the future is to interact, to get around a table and talk, and to chat.”
I am so enthusiastic about the end of the office considering the carbon it would save It is reflected in not just the gas in the cars or the building operations, but the massive carbon from building office buildings, subways, and other facilities designed to meet the peak demand of the commute (通勤).
Many companies are settling into the concept of hybrid (混合的) offices, where employees work from home several days per week. The Carbon Counter of the Financial Times sees a picture in the U. S. where “there are bigger savings from homeworking, largely down to a cut in the time spent driving gas-guzzling (高油耗的) cars.” But people may move to bigger suburban houses, willing to have longer commutes, where they have twice the footprint of someone living in the city.
The Carbon Counter estimates that full-time homeworking has a footprint of about 50% of full-time office working in the U. S., but only a minor saving in carbon emissions with a switch to 3 days in the office and 2 at home, based on a 22-mile commute and a 40% increase in heating and electricity for those days working from home.
Besides, no company is going to keep 100% of their office space for two-thirds of the number of people, especially when they are no longer worrying about social panies will promote more “hot-desking” where employees do not have permanent personal spots, which many find makes the office less attractive, encouraging more people to work from home.
I noted earlier there might be less demand for public transportation and highway expansion in the case of hybrid offices, but analyst John Kemp reports crowded subways are a feature, not a fault. Kemp also notes that “fully occupied central offices and transportation systems usually make very efficient use of energy.”
46. Why are lots of companies calling on employees to return to offices
A. To promote a relaxing working environment.
B. To reduce unnecessary carbon footprints.
C. To bring about another industrial revolution.
D. To boost social contact and teamwork among them.
47. What makes the author in favor of putting an end to the office
A. Its environment-friendliness.
B. Its lowering the cost of the commute.
C. Its contribution to his health.
D. Its giving him flexible working hours.
48. Which of the following might the Carbon Counter agree with
A. Hybrid offices might not be so carbon-efficient.
B. Working from home is not easy to put into practice.
C. Full-time homeworking is more suitable for the U. S.
D. Many people in the U. S. have to face longer commutes.
49. What can we know about “hot-desking”
A. It results in social distancing.
B. It stimulates employees' enthusiasm for work.
C. It encourages people to improve social skills.
D. It contributes to people’s preference for working from home.
50. What is Kemp’s attitude towards hybrid offices
A Approving. B. Indifferent. C. Negative. D. Uncertain.
Albert Einsein said,“Only a life lived for others is worth living.”
How does this job offer sound You’ll need to be available on short notice, including late at night and on weekends. You could be asked to do anything from helping at community events to responding to life-threatening emergencies (sometimes putting your own safety at risk). This job also involves a lot of regular training. Oh, and you won't be paid for any of this. Would you take the job
This job might not necessarily appeal to everyone, but if this sounds like an opportunity you’d eagerly accept, then you’d fit right in with Western Australia’s 26,000 emergency service volunteers. The emergency services aren't the only industry benefiting from volunteers. Across both Australia and America, between a quarter and half of the population volunteer each year in areas including education, sports, health, religion, and social services.
What motivates people to volunteer Yes, volunteers don't get paid. But it doesn't mean people don't get benefits from volunteering. Indeed, research shows there are significant mental health benefits coming with volunteering. It can be a means to make new friends, build new skills or try things out of your comfort zone. It can also be a means to help loved ones. A case is someone close to me who recently lost her husband to a disease. When her husband was admitted to a nursing facility, she decided to volunteer for the patient advocacy committee. She found great support and felt she could make a difference in the lives of the patients. After her husband's passing, she decided to continue volunteering for the committee not only as a way to show gratitude for the great care her husband received but also because she made friends there. She found a way to put her career skills to use for the common good and keep active after retirement.
There are countless ways to volunteer. No matter how you do it, it is definitely worth every minute you put into it.

A. Not everyone is fit to be a volunteer.
B. Many industries in the world need volunteers.
C. Many emergency services exist in Western Australia.
D. Many people devote themselves to volunteering in Australia and America.
53. We can come to the conclusion that volunteering _______.

Mum and Dad never noticed I was failing, but I don’t blame them. They had five children and a busy household. I got through primary school, but within months after starting secondary education I’d been moved into a class for “slow” kids. As far as I was concerned, that was where I belonged, but still felt ashamed.
At 14, I realized things weren’t going to get better. I’d soon leave school unqualified and unemployable. Everyone would know I was stupid. Unable to talk about that with family or friends, I ran away from home.
Life was not easy for me, but I always found a way out. If I had to meet someone, I’d repeat the street name to myself until I found a cab. I avoided situations where I’d have to sign my name. Bills were paid at the post office, in cash. If I had to fill in an application form, I’d take it into the street and ask a passer-by for help. If someone suggested a trip to the theatre, I’d find an excuse not to go.
The turning point emerged with the birth of my daughter, Henrietta. How could I expect her to thrive (茁壮成长) if I wasn’t able to help her with homework Who would read her bedtime stories, if not me I was 30, and couldn’t even recite the alphabet.
I took an evening course but kept it secret from my friends. Gradually, I started to gain what felt like a whole new sense. Within a year, I was able to stand in front of my classmates and deliver a speech about the works of William Blake. After that first year, I told my friends what I’d been up to. The relief was great; it’s like letting out a breath I’d been holding for years. I realized how lonely I’d always been. Finally, I was able to be myself.
Today, my confidence is real, and I feel in control of everything I do. I run a guest house, work as a photographer and am about to complete a degree in psychology and sociology.
