As the sun neared the horizon, Ali began his nightly walk through the sandy streets of Timbuktu in Mali. Covered in robes of indigo, he passed through the streets of Timbuktu and continued out into the sand dunes, just beyond the city’s western suburbs.
Ali was a teenager when he first saw the city that would later become his home. “I couldn’t believe the lights!” he remembered. Members of his family still live a semi-nomadic (半游牧的) existence out in the desert. But when he became an adult, drought and the need to earn a living drove Ali into Timbuktu, where he set up a business as a guide for tourists who wanted to explore the Sahara. His heart remained in the desert even when he had to be in the city. He refused to get a fixed-line telephone in case he came to depend upon it. When he had no clients, he would escape to the desert, spending months at a time camping out, drinking tea with friends and sleeping under the stars.
As a guide, Ali made friends from around the world, and he visited some in Europe. It was, to him, an alien world, just as Timbuktu remains for many around the globe. “The first time I was in Europe, I saw water just lying on the ground. Everything moved at a speed that was unthinkable in the Sahara. I thought ‘these people are crazy’. In the desert we have infinite time but no water,” he said. “In Europe, you have plenty of water but no time.”
When travelers wanted to see more of the Sahara, Ali took them to Araouane, a sand-drowned town 270 km north of Timbuktu. And yet for the tourists who visited there, the town was undoubtedly more to it than that. There was something there that produced a feeling similar to excitement. It was the awe of vast skies and big horizons.
24. What did Ali do daily when the sun would set
A. He took a night walk. B. He chatted with neighbors.
C. He took a photo of the sun. D. He bought some food in a store.
25. How did Ali feel when first seeing the city
A Confused. B. Amazed.
C. Frightened. D. Moved.
26. What can we learn about Ali from paragraph 2
A. He established a travel company.
B. He explored the Sahara Desert on his own.
C. He lived a semi-nomadic life with his wife.
D. He escaped from Sahara Desert with his friends.
27. What does the underlined part “these people are crazy” in paragraph 3 mean
A. People in Europe waste so much time.
B. People in Europe always let water running.
C. People in Europe are curious about everything.
D. People in Europe are always busy with their life.
C
Given the state’s varied geographic climates, there is usually a location with prime conditions for playing golf in California no matter what time of year you plan to visit.
During winter months, you can head to the desert, where the popular golf season is November through April and where there are over 100 courses (球场) within an hour’s drive of Palm Springs. During other months, when the desert’s heat can be dull, the weather is quite likely perfect in northern California’s mountain areas (Shasta, Lake Tahoe and the northern Sierras), the San Francisco Bay Area and all along the Central Coast. Southern California’s weather is considered perfect year-round for golf.
Nine California golf courses scored in Fairways and Greens magazine’s “Top 18 Courses on the West Coast” competition. There are some truly wonderful courses in the state!
One course, Oak Quarry in Riverside is a great place for golfers and non-golfers and so on. Golf Digest said of the course, “This is a national park of golf, the Yosemite of the golf world… This is a course that Ansel Adams would have loved to photograph.”
And, while ocean views can be quite expensive in places like Pebble Beach (with green fees around $400 and a lodge stay required to secure a tee time (开球时间) ), more reasonably priced ocean view alternatives exist at some North Coast California golf courses: try Links at Bodega Harbour and Sea Ranch Golf Links.
Regardless of where you decide to play, you should book your tee times in advance. Some courses charge some dollars for reservations more than a week or two out, but it’s usually worth an extra few dollars to reserve your preferred time.
28. What can we learn from the second paragraph
A. You can choose to play golf along the Central Coast in June.
B. Southern California’s weather is hot and dull all the year round.
C. In northern California’s mountain areas, it’s too hot to play golf in May.
D. You’d better not play golf in California’s desert in November.
29. How many California golf courses are thought highly of in Fairways and Greens magazine’s competition
A. 1. B. 9. C. 18. D. 100.
30. When you book the tee time, _________.
A. you need to pay $ 400 in advance
B. the better priced Pebble Beach is your best choice
C. you may be charged dollars for your preferred time
D. you needn’t pay for booking courses at any time
31. What is the best title for this passage
A. Climate in California. B. California golf courses.
C. Rules about golf. D. Charges about golf.
D
Indeed loneliness is now widely recognized as a major public health problem. What is perhaps less obvious is one answer to the problem: the healing power of poetry to make us feel more connected to others.
Here things get personal. I first got involved in how poetry can support our emotional wellbeing after I wrole a memoir, Black Rainbow: Hone Words Healed Me—My Journey Through Depression, in 2014 about how poetry helped me through two serious periods of depression. Since then, I’ve been running Healing Words poetry sessions for mental health charities and prisons, and have discovered first-hand the lovely feeling of companionship which poetry can bring.
Poetry lets us connect with other people who have experienced similar emotions. We’re not alone in our despair or delight. When we have a poem by our side, whether tucked into a bag or on a bedside table, it feels like we’re being accompanied by a friend: an authorial arm is wrapped around our shoulders.
I remember one woman starting to cry as she read Derek Walcott’s poem “Love After Love” during a workshop held at my local hospital in West London. Fighting through tears, she eventually said, “I feel understood.” Everyone in the room knew exactly what she meant.
She had, in Walcott’s phrase, struggled to “love again the stranger who was yourself”. The poet’s invitation to “Sit. Feast on your life” was the comfort she needed, in a language which spoke to her, to imagine loving herself in a way she had always found hard. Poetry had worked its magic, unlocking a feeling of inner connection, and in turn a connection to all of us sitting in the workshop.
Given my own experience, I think having a poem to keep us company can help us all feel a greater sense of belonging.
32. What does the author suggest doing to fight against loneliness
A. Researching the problem. B. Appreciating poetry.
C. Strengthening dignity. D. Connecting with others.
33. How does having a poem at hand make you feel according to the author
A. Socially accepted. B. Literarily knowledgeable.
C. Financially admired. D. Emotionally comfortable.
34. Why did the woman start to cry in the workshop
A. Because the poem touched her soul.
B. Because she was forced to read the poem.
C. Because she struggled to understand others.
D. Because she failed to work out the poem’s magic.
35. What does the author mainly want to tell us
A. The healing power of poems cures illnesses.
B. Reading can make us feel independent of others.
C. Poetry can improve our emotional well-being.
D. Connection leads to a great sense of belonging.

As Christmas decorations appeared in town, our parents called my two younger brothers and me together. At first, I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.
Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won't be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.”Dad, resting on the couch, beckoned (招手示意) the boys into his arms.“Things will change when I get back to work.”
My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows, he didn't talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income.
At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night, after our parents’ announcement, we talked.
Rodney began. “Em, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked I thought Mommy was gonna cry.
“Me, too. Daddy's foot’s … this big” whispered Stevie, holding out his arms.
“Yeah..We're in hard times," I said.“It makes Mommy and Daddy sad."
“But we don't have to be sad," I added, hoping to brighten the mood.
“Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up," I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank...earn some more..and surprise them with gifts!"
“I can run errands(跑腿) for Aunt Em and neighbors to earn money," I offered.
“Yeah," Rodney added, “I and Stevie can return bottles and save the deposit money... instead of buying candy!" He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow.
“Yeah!”Stevie clutched his hands together.
We had a plan!
Until they nodded off, I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret. “Don't talk about it during the day."
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission!

M: Sure, but he had been working as an air traffic controller for many years. Even more importantly, he trains pilots by giving careful instructions. The controller was able to help the man pilot the plane down and land safely.
W: Did anybody get injured
M: Luckily, that didn’t happen. It was really a miracle.
W: Surely it was. That man was really brave. He saved all the lives on the plane.
M: That’s true.

【原文】M: My name is Jeff. I speak both English and French very well. Now I’m teaching myself Italian, but I’m not good at it yet so how did I learn French As you may know, Canada has two official languages, English and French. However, not all the provinces are French speaking. I grew up and went to university in English speaking parts of the country. I had regular weekly French classes in school, from kindergarten to grade ten actually, but these were too focused on grammar and sentence structures. I dropped French and grade eleven. Fast forward to my second year of university in Toronto, my best friends suggested we do an exchange year in France together and it sounded like an awesome idea. I loved the idea of moving to a foreign country to experience a new culture, so we went to Lyon for an exchange year to experience the French language and culture first hand. It was really helpful. Today, I am fully fluent in French.
I work as a writer in both French and English, do professional translations and have a French partner and French friends.

【答案】32. B 33. A 34. A 35. C

Have you ever wondered why birds sing _____36_____ After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. _____37_____ Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
_____38_____ A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Like us humans, your yard and house are your territory where only family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. _____39_____.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs. _____40_____ Most of their language has something to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
A. The birds sing very beautifully.
B. Maybe you thought they were just happy.
C. The birds sing all the time to attract a mate.
D. You can see that birds have a language of their own.
E. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason.
F. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is actually enough to keep an outsider away.
G. Do you know what a territory is

We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission! The following weeks saw me dashing home from school each day determined to earn a penny. I was usually greeted by secret winks and grins- one with a missing tooth, and the other with tiny, straight teeth- both assuring me our secret was safe. A few days before Christmas, we gleefully went shopping. We bought Mom a new apron, and for Dad, a pair of leather slippers. The night of Christmas Eve seemed endless. I awoke occasionally, or one of my brothers woke me asking, “How long till daylight ”
On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy. Surprised and stunned, they showered us with tons of confusing questions. “How did you.. ” “Where did you.. ” “Who gave you... "" As we explained how we'd schemed, earned and saved our money, their faces relaxed into expressions of astonishment. Then, with glistening tears, Mom and Dad wrapped us three into their arms. On this special Christmas morning, with the five of us hugging, talking, laughing and listening with fresh affection and gratitude, I understood that rich or poor, we would keep together and be happy in one another.
