Last summer, my friend Dan and I went to the town of Bu ol in Spain to take part in La Tomatina. We had a/an ▲ tomato fight there!
The celebrations started a week before the main event. There were food stalls, music, parades (游行) and other activities. But we only joined in the day of the fight.
It was Wednesday, August 28. We arrived in the town at 9 a.m. in old clothes. Everyone was excitedly waiting for the tomato fight to begin. Some brave people tried to climb a greasy pole (涂了油的杆子). If someone could get the ham at the top, the fight would start early. The rest of us watched and sang songs to encourage them. But the pole was so slippery (滑溜溜的) that no one could get more than halfway up.
Finally, the fight started at 11 a.m. Dan and I put on our goggles (护目镜) to protect our eyes. A few huge trucks slowly drove down the streets. People inside the trucks threw tomatoes out toward the crowd. Then, the trucks turned over their boxes and poured all the tomatoes onto the street. We picked them up and threw them here and there.
The next hour was a total mess. Tomatoes were everywhere! They were in the air, in our hair, all around our feet and down our clothes...
The fight went on for an hour. After that, the local workers hosed (用水管冲洗) us down to wash off most of the tomatoes. Dan and I kept laughing and talking about the fight. It was one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had in my life!

Blood is like a river of life. It flows inside our body and keeps us alive. However, when someone loses a lot of blood in an accident, it takes time to restore (恢复) blood that was lost. But if they need new blood right away, what can save them
A blood transfusion (输血) may help to save them. In the 1600s, most people believed that blood was being used up all the time and that the body had to keep making more of it. But an English physician (医师) named William Harvey thought differently. He discovered what we know today that blood returns to its starting point to be recycled. Harvey’s discovery of the way blood circulates is important to the future development of blood transfusions.
About forty years after Harvey’s finding, the first successful blood transfusion happened between animals. But most animal-to-human transfusions would not work. Some of the early transfusions between humans were successful, but again, most were not. What was the problem It turns out that different people have different blood types. They are not always compatible. That means different blood types can’t exist (存在) together successfully.
People didn’t know the different blood types until a German scientist named Karl Landsteiner discovered them in the early 1900s. Landsteiner discovered three main blood types: A, B, and O. A fourth type, AB, was discovered later. Landsteiner’s research showed that people need to receive blood that is compatible with their own. Because of discoveries like Landsteiner’s, now blood types should be checked and matched before a transfusion.
The blood transfusion has greatly improved over the last century. Today, blood from donors (捐赠者) is carefully tested and stored so that it can be quickly given to those who need it. Thanks to the discoveries of scientists and doctors—as well as the kindness of people who donate their blood—transfusions save or improve millions of people’s lives every year.

The Drama Festival will run in and outside China from June 20 to July 7. Sixty-five works will be put on both in theaters and online. “The festival is all about imagination connecting drama with the latest technology,” says Liu Chang, manager of the festival, who is also a drama director. Technology has improved design, performances and so on. Artists like Liu aren’t sure if the new technology can take drama to the future.
A Chinese play directed by Meng Jinghui, inspired (得到灵感于……) by the two-part drama Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, will be on as the opening play of the festival. In the first half of the play, Meng introduces the story to 400 real audiences (观众) sitting in the Fengchao Theater in Beijing. The second half of the play will have more audiences, who use their cell phones, computers and headsets to be part of the play online.
Liu is a director full of imagination. His work, inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, will be shown from June 30 to July 2. Supported by AI, audiences can explore the fictitious scene, similar to the feeling in the real world, as the painting describes.
“The stage (舞台) design is done by AI, which is like an assistant realizing the ideas of my team and me,” says Liu. “Now I try to use the latest technology, such as ChatGPT, to write the script, and I am still working on it because the language model is difficult to understand.”
Now technology is playing a more and more important role. Many artists want to use it to improve drama. They are very interested in the relationship between people and the latest technology, especially when connected in drama—a scene to dream.

The Hutuo River is the mother river of Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei. About 20 years ago, it was dirty and almost dried up. Thanks to the government’s work, it has become much cleaner.
Wu Wenzhong, a 58-year-old villager, lives near the river. “My friends and I often played with water, swam and caught fish in it when I was a child. I liked catching fish best,” he said. He remembers that the villagers had to cross the river by boat at that time. But as time passed by, it got dirty and started to dry up.
To remediate (修复) the river, the government does a lot of things. They clean up the river and build levees (防洪堤). They plant trees, grass and flowers to green the riverside. They set up fences (防护栏) and put up “No Swimming” signs along the river to protect people. They stop factories from putting wastewater into the river. They keep an eye on the river to make sure it stays clean for the fish, birds and people who live nearby. They also have a long-term plan to keep the river in good condition.
Now, there are more than 20 kinds of birds living around the river. It becomes a home for birds again. People can enjoy a day outdoors with the beauty of nature along the river. Wu and other villagers are happy to see the river looking good again.

You are sitting in the cinema with popcorn in mouth when a scene flashes on the screen—the moment when the hero fights against the villain (反派)—and you doubt whether success is possible. Then, the hero wins and you realize you’ve been holding your breath all the time. Superhero movies come out every year. Avengers: Endgame was so popular that tickets for the first week were sold out quickly. Why do we never get tired of watching these movies
Superhuman abilities, alien worlds, and strange situations are features of our favorite superhero (超级英雄) movies. Yet these characteristics are absent from our real life. The great difference between these movies and our daily life allows us to separate one from the other. When our real life becomes too hard for us to face, we can get away into the world of superheroes.
Superheroes are those who have superpowers and are brave enough to sacrifice (牺牲) themselves. This kind of courage is often translated on screen as superheroes using their abilities to protect humans. This is another reason why we love them. We are born to be attracted to people who protect the weaker ones.
In recent movies, superheroes with amazing abilities also experience very human moments like losing loved ones. As a result, we see part of ourselves in these characters and they help us face challenges like them.
The last reason why superhero movies are so popular today is money. These movies make a great deal of money. This win-win situation drives a lot of filmmakers to keep making films.
Over the past few years, superheroes have turned from comic-book characters to movie stars. They have become such a common part of popular culture that it seems we can’t live without them. You might eat your popcorn while watching the breath-stealing scenes again soon.

About two hundred years ago, it was difficult for people to communicate over long distances. Messages to far-off places were carried on horseback. Then Samuel Morse invented the electric telegraph (电报) and the code (编码) it uses. The electric telegraph could send messages using electricity. The person at one end used a machine to make a special code for each letter. The system changed the code into electrical impulses (电子脉冲) and sent them to their destination. These impulses were changed back into the code at the destination. The code was printed on a paper tape connected to another machine. The person on the receiving end used the code to change the message back into words. Later, people learned to translate the code just by listening.
Morse code is a series of dots and dashes which are like the following.
Secret messages can be sent by Morse code using light too. A flashing light can send the same dots and dashes and they can be translated by someone watching. Today Morse code is still in use. Some lighthouses on the sea identify (识别) themselves using Morse code. Pilots can locate places in the wild with Morse code. But perhaps the most exciting use of Morse code is helping people with disabilities communicate.

Scientists believe the Earth is 4.6 billion years old. However, the mountains, valleys (山谷), hills, rivers, deserts and forests we see today are much younger than that. Changes happen all the time.
The Earth is always changing because of volcanoes (火山), earthquakes and of course, wind and rain. Some of these changes are very slow and others are quick. Water and ice can make very great changes to the planet. For example, rivers of ice can cut through mountains and make lakes, and deep valleys. Many volcanoes are under the oceans and sometimes they become new islands. This is happening in the South Pacific.
It’s normal for our planet to change, but at the moment, scientists think it’s changing faster than usual. According to the research, the sea level will continue to rise in the next hundred years. As a result, many cities will possibly be covered by water and much of the most productive farming areas will be lost. Some island countries are likely to disappear on the map of the world.
These changes will bring great harm to the planet. However, they can be beneficial (有好处的) to some people. For example, as the Arctic (北极) is getting warmer, some people in Greenland now own businesses and sell vegetables they grow on their land.

She was a four-year-old girl with very fine golden hair. When I first met her, she was handing me a bowl of soup. I was suffering from the flu.
Her mom and I had been friends for many years. Finally, that friendship grew into care, from care into love and marriage. Marriage brought the three of us together as a family. At first, I was afraid to be a stepfather. However, as she was growing up, I found it increasingly hard to communicate with her.
Once, her school required every parent to write an open and honest letter to the children. I wrote a letter about the little golden-haired girl who had brought me a bowl of soup when I needed care.
A week later, the students were allowed to make a few speeches to the parents. I was anxious to hear what my daughter would say. Finally, my daughter made her way up to the microphone. “At this very moment, I just want to say... I love you, Father!” Immediately, people around me started smiling at me. Can you imagine a sea of sand three times bigger than India This is the Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world. It covers 11 countries in North Africa and is over 9 million square kilometres. That’s more than 25% of Africa.
In the Sahara, temperatures are very different during the day and at night. It is much hotter during the day than at night. During the day, the hottest time is between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., when temperatures rise to 33℃. But it is very cold at night—the coldest time is at 4 a.m., when temperatures fall to -1℃. The Sahara is very dry. The average precipitation in a year is only 70 millimetres.
Because of the extreme (极端的) temperatures in the desert, it is a very difficult place to survive. Marco Rivera, an expert, has some tips:
·Take warm clothes and a blanket. You will need them to keep you warm at night. During the day, cover your body, head and face to protect you from the sun and keep water in your body.
·A car is easier to see than a person walking in the desert. Use car mirrors to signal and tyres to make a fire for help and warmth.
·Drink water hourly, conserve it, drink only when needed, and keep your mouth closed to save water.
·Eat only a little, very slowly to ease hunger. If you eat, you will get thirsty and use up your water faster. You can live for three weeks with no food, but you can only live for three days without water.
·During the day, make a hole under your car and lie there to avoid the sun and stay cool. At night, find a warm place to sleep, but look carefully for animals before you lie down.

C.Eating quickly is really important in the desert.
D.Finding a warm place to sleep is unnecessary.
Millions of moviegoers worldwide have been crazy about the same thing recently—the story of a difficult boy with panda eyes and shark-like teeth. Are you one of them
In the Ne Zha films, the boy named Ne Zha is born from the demon Orb (魔丸). The villagers all fear him. They believe he can only cause trouble. But when disaster falls upon his village, Ne Zha rises up like a superhero. He refuses to accept his fate (命运) or be remembered as a demon.
And much like his character, director Jiaozi chose to be the master of his own fate. Although he always loved cartoons, he had to study medicine in college. Then at 21, he once again discovered his dream of being a cartoon maker and decided to teach himself. Many of his friends said he wouldn’t succeed and advised him to abandon the idea. But Jiaozi kept “fighting”.
For years, the most popular cartoon movies in China came from Japan or the West. Jiaozi hoped to change this. As the movie Ne Zha 2 became a top hit in the world, it’s clear that Jiaozi’s dream came true.
Perhaps you’re shy and no one ever expects you to enter a speech competition. Or maybe you’ve been told that you aren’t cut out for a certain job. Would you just accept this “fate” I hope Jiaozi and his Ne Zha movies have made you think twice.

A lot of people take up dancing as a hobby in their free time. In fact, many people have found that dancing can make them feel better both physically and mentally. Why is dancing so helpful
When we dance, we move our bodies to different kinds of music. This movement helps our bodies produce more endorphins, a chemical that makes us feel relaxed and happy. It’s like our body’s own “feel-good” medicine.
Dancing is a mix of music and sports. While simply listening to music or doing sports can cheer us up, mixing them together gives better results. In a study, a group of German scientists carefully chose a number of patients with different levels of depression (沮丧). They tested these patients under three conditions: a group dancing with music, a group just listening to music, and a group riding bikes without music. The results showed that the first group was the least depressed.
Dancing can bring people together, too. Tango, Latin dance or other social dancing requires us to move with others, which can improve our sense of social connection, according to IBSA, a Swiss scientific foundation.
Studies have found that depression often has to do with sadness about the past or worry about the future. However, dancing helps you focus on the present, connect with your body and free your mind for a while. In this way, it helps us forget bad feelings.
Lauren Helper, a social worker in the US, said that dancing can be any form. You can dance at home when you listen to your favorite song, or you can go out and dance with friends. The most important thing is to have fun no matter who you are. Dancing is a wonderful way to boost your feelings and live a happier life.
50.How does the writer support his opinion in Paragraph 3
A.By introducing the history of dancing.
B.By giving examples of different dance styles.
C.By presenting the results of a scientific study.
D.By comparing different types of music used in dancing.

A.Improve. B.Lower. C.Change. D.Show.
52.Which would be the best structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
53.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To introduce different types of dances.
B.To encourage people to join dance classes.
C.To explain why dancing makes people feel better.
D.To share the results of a scientific study on dancing.
54.Which of the following is Lauren Helper’s opinion
A.People dancing at home can get the best results.
B.Only professional dancers can enjoy the benefits of dancing.
C.Dancing can’t help people who have serious mental problems.
D.Dancing in any form can be a good way to make people feel better.
Were you surprised by the humanoid robots (人形机器人) performing the Yangko dance at this year’s Spring Festival Gala Wait for it! There’s more. Some robots can even do front flips (前空翻)! These days, humanoid robots seem to be able to do almost everything. But what makes them so smart
The secret lies in artificial intelligence (AI). Since 2022, big progress in AI has pushed humanoid robots to the next panies are coming up with amazing technologies, like large language models. Language models, which power chatbots like ChatGPT, can also make robots smarter. They learn from tons of information and use the knowledge to help robots think.
The depth camera in the robots is like their eyes. It helps robots understand what they see in photos and videos. This mix of language models and visual AI allows robots to know how things relate and interact. This improves their ability to perform tasks.
However, being smart isn’t enough. Robots also need to move well. In the past, even simple tasks like picking up an apple were hard for robots. These days, new technologies make them better. Using light but strong materials like carbon fiber makes robots strong and flexible (灵活的). Sensors are like the robots’ senses. They help robots “see” and feel their surroundings. Motors (发动机) are like the robots’ muscles. They help robots move easily.
Humanoid robots are becoming more and more popular and starting to enter all areas of our lives. They still have a lot of room for development in the future and will definitely become even more amazing! Some people predict that by 2035, the market value of humanoid robots could reach 276.9 billion yuan.
55.Which of the following makes the robots move well
①Sensors ②The depth camera
③ Light but strong materials ④Language models

All around the world, buildings are going green! People are making green buildings. What does it mean to go green or to make a green building A green building is designed (设计) in a way that is not harmful to the environment. The building uses energy, water, and other materials in ways that are good for the environment.
When planning green buildings, architects (建筑师) must think about how to use energy, water, and materials in an environment-friendly way. There are many ways to save energy. Architects can design buildings to use natural light. Buildings can also be made with solar or wind power to get energy from the sun or the wind. To save water, green buildings can have areas on the roofs to collect rainwater. Kitchens and bathrooms can have sinks (洗涤池) and toilets (马桶) that conserve water. As for the materials used to build the building, it is important to use materials that do not have chemicals that are harmful to the air or water. Recycled materials can also be used for buildings.

Not the little piggy and his three friends from the animated (动画的) movie Nobody (无名之辈).
This past summer, their story made people laugh and encouraged tens of millions of moviegoers across China. Some say that Nobody is not just a movie, rather, it’s more like a mirror. In real life, many common people also choose to hold on to their dreams, even though they face great difficulties. One of them is Pang Zhongwang, now a star student graduating from Tsinghua University. Twenty-six years ago, however, he was born a poor “nobody” in a countryside of Hebei. His late (已故的) mother had a disability and couldn’t work. His father had a serious mental(精神) illness. Even though there were all these challenges, Pang, under his mother’s influence, grew up strong and happy. He started to take on family duties when he was very young. Climate scientists say that 50 percent of sandy beaches along the world’s shorelines (海岸线) could disappear over the next eight decades.
The study was published in the journal Nature Climate Change. Michalis Vousdoukas was the lead investigator (调查员). “Touristic areas which have sandy beaches as their main selling point will probably face strong results,” he said. Apart from economic value, beaches play an important environmental role. “Sandy beaches are important homes supporting various kinds of species. They also protect the coast from the effects of storms, so without sandy beaches other inland environments can be influenced by waves and saltwater,” Vousdoukas added.
Global sea levels have increased in recent decades. Major causes include fewer glaciers (冰川) and thermal expansion (热膨胀). The increasing heat changes more and more glaciers into water. Thermal expansion is the general increase in the size of a material as its temperature increases. The size of water becomes larger as it warms. Researchers examined satellite pictures showing shoreline changes during the past thirty years. They then used these trends (趋势) in two different climate change situations. One situation expected a small reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The other expected high greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions are related to climate change. By 2050, the researchers expected beach losses of between 13 and 15 percent. By 2100, the expected losses are from 35 to 49.5 percent, or 95,061 to 131,745 kilometers of beaches. Australia would lose more miles of sandy coastline than any other country, with 14,849 kilometers expected to be gone by 2100. Canada is expected to lose the second largest amount of coastline in terms of length. The United States could lose up to 5,530 kilometers. The well-known, popular beach Costa del Sol in Spain may disappear forever.
