Versions (版本) of the Chinese calendar have been used for thousands of years. Today the Chinese calendar is still used to mark traditional Chinese holidays, like the Chinese New Year, the Lantern Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and so on.
The Chinese calendar was developed by many of the Chinese dynasties of ancient China. However, the calendar we use today was created during the rule of Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty. It was called the Taichu calendar. It’s special because it’s the same as the Chinese calendar we use today.
Each year in the Chinese calendar is named after an animal. There are 12 animals that the years cycle through. They appear in a fixed order and the cycle repeats every 12 years. According to ancient Chinese legend, the order of the animals in the calendar was decided by a race. The animals raced across a river and their position in the cycle was decided by how they finished in the race. The rat won because it rode on the back of the ox and jumped off its back at the last minute to win the race. Some people believe that your personality is decided by which year you were born. For example, they think that people born in the Year of the Dog are loyal and honest.
The Chinese calendar also divides the year into 24 solar terms (节气), which provides farmers with important information for planting and harvesting crops.
By continuing to use the Chinese calendar, Chinese people keep and protect their cultural heritage (遗产) and traditions. Chinese calendar not only connects the present with the past, but also becomes an important part of Chinese life and culture.
1.What is special about the Taichu Calendar
2.How did the rat win the race
3.Translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
4.Why is the Chinese calendar still being used today

Ancient magic. A talking tiger. The Tiger’s Apprentice (学徒) is an animated movie filled with surprises. Brandon Soo Hoo voices (配音) Tom Lee, the movie’s young hero. A reporter called Sophia Zhang interviewed the actor about his character and experiences.
How would you describe Tom
Tom is trying to find his place in the world as a hero. He wants to find his community and step into his fullest potential (潜力).
Which parts of Tom resonate (共鸣) with you most
Tom is not too different from me. I’m Chinese-American. He grew up in Chinatown in the Bay Area of San Francisco, California. I grew up in Chinatown in Los Angeles. So I didn’t have to dig too deep into my life and my experiences to relate to Tom.
And Tom is really good at trying to stay positive when situations are difficult. He uses his wisdom and his sense of humor to overcome (克服) difficulties. Those are things I can surely relate to.
In the beginning, Tom tries to go about dealing with a lot of his difficulties with brute (野蛮的) force. But he learns to use his head a bit more and find compassion. That’s something that I had to develop as I got older, too.
What’s the most important message you want kids to take away from this movie
Don’t be afraid to depend on the people that you love, for support, if you need it. There’s so much value and so much power in community, and there’s so much value in family.

7.How many questions did Brandon answer in the interview
8.How does Tom overcome difficulties in the movie

The meaning of happiness is subjective (主观的). But almost every expert (专家) mentioned common qualities of happiness: a sense of control over one’s life, being guided by meaning and purpose, and connecting with others. And most of them agreed that happiness can be increased and taught.
Spending time with family members or friends was a big one: most did both at least once a week, and many gathered socially three to four times a week. John Zelenski, a professor at Carleton University, described social relationships as the chief parts of happiness. “We are all likely to get good results from close friendships and a general sense of respect and belonging (归属感) in a community,” he said.
Developing hobbies, such as art, music, cooking, and reading, was also important. Most people found space for these interests five to six times a week.
Happiness has long been connected to enough sleep, and the people surveyed preferred to get at least seven hours a night. Exercising or playing sports was another shared habit, with people saying they exercise three to six times weekly.
Another key to finding happiness might be in nature. More than half of the experts reported doing this at least three times a week. Emiliana R. Simon Thomas, science director of the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, mentioned that when she was anxious, she took a walk and watched flowers, plants, birds and insects.
She also did breathing exercises, read poems, and watched comedies on bad days. Other experts made unhelpful thoughts disappear by reading favourite books, or listening to exciting songs. Some also mentioned asking a friend for a hug or letting it out with a good cry.
10.What did most of the experts agree
11.According to John Zelenski, what is the key to happiness
12.What does “this” refer to in Paragraph 5
13.How many ways to find happiness are mentioned from Paragraph 2 to Paragraph 5
14.What do you think of the ways to be happy mentioned in the passage

Recently, people and the governments have worked together to make the environment better. They have used new technologies and have taken steps to deal with pollution. 15 All these show that the world is becoming greener and more environmentally friendly.
16 There was a lot of pollution, including air pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, and light pollution.
Burning gas, oil, and coal created air pollution. It caused sore eyes and breathing problems. With the increase in population and the development of industry, people had to put lots of litter into the land. In the fields, farmers used too many chemicals which destroyed the soil. Soil pollution led to unhealthy food.
17 People would become deaf if they worked in a noisy place for a long time. Loud noises from traffic and machines created noise pollution, which disturbed people’s lives. Too much noise could cause high blood pressure as well.
18 Especially at night, bright city lights led to light pollution, making it hard to see stars. It could make people feel terrible and was especially bad for eyes.
With less pollution, our planet will become greener and our health will be better. Let’s be greener people.
A.Noise pollution harmed people’s hearing. B.Light pollution was caused by strong light. C. This has made the environment healthier. D.Water pollution can lead to serious illnesses. E. However, in the past, pollution was a serious problem in many places.

70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. However, only 3% of the water is fit for human use, and the rest is frozen or salty. According to a report by WWF, water shortage (短缺) influences nearly 27% of the world’s population.
Many reasons cause water shortage. The first is climate (气候) change. The heat caused by climate change leads to water drying out. The next is water pollution, which makes the limited water unsafe for using. What’s more, the growing population makes the situation worse. In the last 50 years, the human population has more than doubled, and today 41% of the world’s population is badly in need of water.
So, what are the results of water shortage Firstly, people lack enough water to drink, which does harm to their lives and health. Besides, water shortage brings about hunger. Plants cannot grow when there is not enough water. As a result, there is less food for people.
Therefore, it’s time to take action. Here are three ways for us to save water in daily life. First, take shorter showers. Save a minute or two of your shower time. Millions of people doing even the little things makes a difference. Second, check your taps (水龙头). If you forget to turn off a tap, all those wasted drops add up—sometimes 5300 litres of water a year. Third, reuse water. Collect water after washing vegetables and pour it on your plants.

Pollution is the act of introducing harmful things to the environment that does harm to nature. Things that cause pollution are called pollutants. There are so many kinds of pollutants, such as chemical products, waste materials, light, heat and noise. So pollution is divided into different types, such as water pollution, noise pollution, air pollution, radioactive(放射性的) pollution, and plastic pollution.
There are numerous causes of pollution. While some pollution happens through natural events such as hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions(火山爆发) and forest fires, most of the pollution in the world is caused by human activities. For example, air pollution may happen from burning waste material, car emissions(排放) and agriculture. Car emissions are considered as the leading cause of air pollution in the world. Cars also cause noise pollution in the world.
Environmental pollution causes lots of harmful influences on living things and nature. Air pollution often leads to health problems in humans such as respiratory(呼吸的) diseases and heart diseases. Besides, polluted air causes acid rain(酸雨) which is harmful in the soil. Water pollution is a main cause of death in most developing countries. Noise pollution often leads to hearing loss, stress, sleeping problems, and even high blood pressure. Environmental pollution caused by chemicals can lead to developmental problems in children. Pollution often makes the ecosystem(生态系统) lose balance and some animals or plants are in danger of dying out.
Most countries have taken action to control and reduce pollution and its harmful effects. Some of the steps taken to control pollution are recycling reusable materials, treating waste before putting it into the environment, making compost from waste materials, and reducing waste products from industrial activities. Technology is also used in controlling pollution in most developed nations.

Ghosts of our loved ones
Many people think things like ghosts and death are scary. But in fact, we just had a festival celebrating these things.
Every year, on the 15th day of the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar, we celebrate Zhongyuan Festival, or Ghost Festival. It is on August 30th this year. On this day, families light lanterns to help dead people find their way home. But at the same time, living people don’t want to stay out at night during Ghost Festival. They believe ghosts may hurt them.
Ghost Festival and Tomb-Sweeping Day, or Qingming Festival are both holidays that honor the dead. During Ghost Festival, the spirits of all dead people are honored. But we only honor our dead family members at Qingming. People believe the spirits of the dead would come back to Earth during Ghost Festival, but not during Qingming.
In Chinese culture, death is a scary and heavy thing. People are mostly afraid of it. But in some other cultures, death is a less gloomy (阴郁的) thing.
In the US, people remember the dead on Halloween. But they make it a fun festival. People wear scary clothes. Children do fun things, like trick-or-treating.
In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a time for the living to connect with the dead. They make dolls of the dead and tell stories about them. There are also parties at night. Whether you like it or not, death is a part of life. Understanding death can help us cherish (珍惜) our time here and live best lives.

Before you go to another country, it is a great help if you know the language and some of the customs of the country.
When people meet each other for the first time in Britain, they say “Hello!” or “Nice to meet you.” and shake hands. Usually they do not shake hands when they just meet or say goodbye. But they shake hands after they haven’t met for a long time or when they will be away from each other for a long time.
Last year a group of German students went to England for a holiday. Their teacher told them that the English people hardly shake hands. So when they met their English friends at the station, they kept their hands behind their backs. The English students had learned that the Germans shake hands as often as possible, so they put their hands in front and got ready to shake hands with them. 这个行为使得大家都笑了。

Building Schools with Bottles
By Tracy Vonder Brink
Is your school made of bricks or concrete blocks Many are. But some classrooms in Guatemala and EI Salvador were built a different way—with bottles full of trash! Hug It Forward—bottle schools use plastic bottles, trash, and lots of community helpers. Let’s see how they do it!
First, kids and other helpers pick up trash. They’ll burn plastic bags and chip wrappers into eco-bricks. Each classroom takes about 3,500 eco-bricks to build. That’s around one ton of trash!
To make eco-bricks, the kids stuff empty plastic bags and chip wrappers into cleaned plastic bottles. They need about 80 plastic bags or around 100 chip wrappers to fill one bottle all the way to the top.
Helpers from the community build frames for the classroom walls. They add chicken wire to hold the eco-bricks.
The eco-bricks are tied in rows between the layers of chicken wire. Any gaps are filled with more plastic bags.
Rows and rows of eco-bricks make up the walls. They are just as strong and last as long as other kinds of walls.
51.How are the classrooms in Guatemala and EI Salvador built differently
52.What are the materials used to build the bottle schools
53.How many eco-bricks are needed to build one classroom
54.How are the eco-bricks made
55.Are the walls made of eco-bricks as strong as other kinds of walls

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of waste in your hand is recyclable or not To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to divide the waste. The students called the bin Waste Collection Point.
The bin uses a camera to know the kind of the waste and divides it into plastic, paper, glass or other kinds. To make sure the bin can divide waste correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took over 500 pictures of each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles (角度), so it has a better rate of accuracy (精确度),” said one of the students.
The students had the idea of the smart bin two years ago because they saw a lot of rubbish here and there in their village. Every weekend, they had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.
The students decided to invent a special recycling bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. Although the school ended at 2 p.m., the team members would continue to work on their invention until 6 or 7 p.m. at school.
“Our bin is now in its third generation (代). Before graduation, we hope that it can be widely used in the city.” The students said, “Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle waste and protect our environment.”

Look around you—how many plastic things can you find in your house Most homes today are almost full of plastics, from water bottles to clothes, chairs, and even computers. Regretfully, so are our rivers and oceans.
According to the report, about 583 billion plastic bottles were produced in 2021. That is 100 billion more than just five years ago. This year, five trillion (万亿) plastic bags were used. That was 160,000 every second. Americans alone use half a million drinking straws (吸管) every day.
However, very little of the plastic that goes into recycling bins (垃圾箱) can make it through the recycling process (过程). Experts (专家) think that only around 9% of plastic is recycled. About 16% is burned for electricity or heat. The rest ends up in landfills or bodies of water.
So how do you make sure plastic things you use are recycled Begin by making sure the things you put in your recycling bin can be recycled. And in most cases, plastic things can’t be used again if they have more than one kind of plastic in them. That’s because some plastics can’t be mixed together.
How about those plastic things that are able to be recycled at a recycling centre First, workers make sure that each plastic is clean. After that, the plastic things are made into small pieces. At last, they are melted (融化) and used to create new things. One of the commonly seen products is new plastic bottles. Recycled plastic can also be used to make clothes, pens, and building materials!

Let’s sit in the “Green” seats!
Are you looking forward to next year’s Olympic Games Paris 2024 promises to be a “green” event. Its organizers have found a new way of going green: In some of the venues (场馆) in Seine-Saint-Denis (塞纳—圣但尼省), about 11,000 seats are made from recycled plastic.
The seats were produced by recycling company Lemon Tri and a few partners (合作伙伴). They collected plastic waste and turned it into small pieces. These pieces were then mixed together and heated. After that, they were compressed (压缩) in machines. The results was black or white plastic sheets with flecks (斑点) of color. These sheets were then sanded (打磨), cut and assembled (组装) into seats.
Are these seats of good quality (质量), you may ask Don’t worry! A number of tests have been carried out on them. There were a UV resistance (抗紫外线) test, a fire resistance test, and more. People will be able to sit safely in the chairs and enjoy the excitement of the game!
The seats were made from about 100 tons of plastic waste. About 80 percent of the plastic came from local recycling bins (箱). Local schools also collected about five million colored soda bottle caps and they were used in the making of the seats.
The seats not only help the environment, but also educate people about recycling.
Augustin Jaclin is the co-founder of Lemon Tri. “Our kids put their bottles in the bins,” he said. “Next year, they’ll sit on the seats made from these bottles. This will teach them to recycle more in their daily lives!”
