Ahmed Muhammad, an 18-year-old high school student from California, realized how difficult it can be for some kids to engage in science. He discovered this when taking care of his younger cousins. One day, he asked them whether they wanted to do a science experiment, but their response was disappointing.
“Every time I take care of them, we usually play chess, play video games, or watch TV. But when I tried to get them to do science experiments, they said, ‘No, I hate science. I’m not good at it,’” Muhammad recalled. This moment inspired him to create a non-profit organization called “Kits Cubed”, which was intended to expose kids to science in a fun, affordable and accessible way.
“I went back to my room, pulled out some science books, and started researching online. I came up with a few science experiments that could be done at home using everyday, inexpensive materials, and the kids loved them,” Muhammad said.
Seeing how happy his cousins were, he realized that other kids could benefit from the same experience. “I noticed that schools often lacked science experiments, and I thought kids needed access to science kits,” Muhammad explained.
He then took $200 he had saved up to create a website and started producing science kits for sale, with the profit donated to children in need. “I had enough money to build the website and make about 10–15 kits. Initially, my objective was just to see my cousins happy. I wanted to share that joy with more kids,” Muhammad said.
Today, Muhammad has been accepted into Stanford University, and he is proud to have changed his cousins’ view on science while inspiring other kids.
24. What inspired Muhammad to create “Kits Cubed”
A. His cousins’ lack of interest in science.
B. His passion for doing science experiments.
C. His inability to get along well with his cousins.
D. His desire to help schools with science resources.
25. Why did Muhammad produce science kits at the beginning
A. To donate them to schools. B. To make his cousins happy.
C. To run his website smoothly. D. To promote scientific research.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Muhammad
A. Optimistic. B. Creative. C. Accessible. D. Modest.
27. Which can be the best title for this passage
A. “Kits Cubed” Helps Kids in Need B. Science Experiments Matter to Kids

Lab-grown chicken is finally making its way onto menus in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently given permission for selling cultured (培养的) meat produced by GOOD Meat and UPSIDE Foods, marking a significant breakthrough for the cultured meat industry. These companies are able to grow small amounts of chicken cells into meat without the need for traditional slaughter (屠宰). However, it’s important to note that this permission is currently limited to chicken products. Both companies still require additional permission to market cell-cultured beef, pork or seafood.
Concerns have been growing among Americans about traditional meat production, which contributes to about 14.5% of global carbon emissions and can encourage antibiotic-resistant (耐抗生素的) bacteria growth. Additionally, it pollutes waterways with animal waste. And the animals themselves often live relatively short lives in cages. “The current methods of traditional meat production are at the root of many environmental issues,” says GOOD Meat CEO Josh Tetrick.
Despite these concerns, meat remains a significant part of many people’s diets due to cultural, traditional and nutritional reasons. Cultured meat companies position themselves as producing sustainable and proper meat, aiming to provide meat lovers with a guilt-free choice that satisfies their desire for tasty food.
The production process for lab-grown meat is relatively straightforward, with the main challenge lying in building sufficient production facilities. Both companies, now armed with USDA and FDA permission, can focus on expanding to produce enough cell-cultured meat to meet the demand. At the beginning, lab-grown chicken will only be available at select restaurants, including Bar Crenn in San Francisco and a restaurant owned by chef José Andrés in Washington.
28. What can be known about lab-grown chicken
A. It is grown from chicken cells. B. It grows from artificial materials.
C. It is cheap to produce and process. D. It tastes better than regular chicken.
29. What is the problem with traditional meat production
A. Animals live in crowded cages. B. Consumer demand can’t be met.
C. The procedure is not eco-friendly. D. It is considered outdated by factories.
30. What are cultured meat companies going to do
A. Improve the meat taste. B. Gain government approval.
C. Cooperate with restaurants. D. Increase their productivity.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Cultured meat permitted for sale in the US. B. A breakthrough in cultured meat technology.
C. The impact of cultured meat on eating habits. D. Environmental issues caused by meat production.

Education experts at the University of South Australia remind teachers that high engagement leads to high returns when it comes to improving student performance.
Filming and assessing the content of classrooms across South Australia and Victoria, researchers found in a new study that nearly 70% of student tasks involved superficial learning — simple questions and answers, taking notes, or listening to teachers — rather than activities that engage students on a deeper level. Less than a third of teachers are engaging students in complex learning, limiting student opportunities for critical thinking and problem solving.
Dr. Stephenson, a researcher at UniSA, emphasizes that teachers need more support in designing interactive and meaningful lessons that promote deep learning. “The greater the engagement, the deeper the learning. Deep learning helps organize knowledge into conceptual frameworks, enhancing memory and learning outcomes. It also develops innovative thinking. Even small adjustments to lesson plans and teaching techniques can significantly boost student engagement and overall performance,” he explains.
At a base level, teachers should consider how they can adjust their existing classroom activities so that more tasks are on the deeper end of learning. For instance, watching a video can be done in various ways: students can watch it passively, take notes using the speaker’s words (active engagement), write questions based on the video’s content (constructive engagement), or watch and discuss the video in a group to generate new ideas (interactive engagement). “Interactive learning motivates students to engage more deeply by making judgments, discussing ideas, and cooperating on solutions,” Dr. Stephenson says.
Interestingly, many teachers seem not to know or fully appreciate the importance of how their lesson tasks can stimulate (激发) different modes of student engagement. “Even changing class activities from ‘active’ to ‘constructive’ can go a long way towards improving student leaning,” Dr. Stephenson says. “Teachers should undertake professional development to transform their thinking towards practices that support deeper-learning and better outcomes for students.”
32. What does the underlined word “superficial” probably mean in paragraph 2
A. Interactive. B. Devoted. C. Shallow. D. Accurate.
33. What do education experts advise teachers to do
A. Frequently assess student outcomes.
B. Involve students in active learning.
C. Increase the use of videos in class.
D. Promote students’ planning skills.
34. What can be learned about current class activities
A. They prevent students from distraction.
B. They help develop students’ team spirit.
C. They make for students’ deep thinking.
D. They are in urgent need of transformation.
35. Which activity can improve student performance best
A. Viewing videos. B. Class debates.
C Reading competitions. D. Retelling exercises.

In Grade 9 I joined boxing classes. My friend Lea and I were the only girls in the class.
We got to throw our first punches (拳击) and learned how we should stand. I still didn’t know how to do it well, but I felt that choosing the boxing class was a right decision. Mr. Vernon, our boxing teacher, made us work hard and sweat. The boxing pads (防护垫) were my favorite, but my punches weren’t strong enough.
After participating in more practices, we had learned how to punch in six different ways. The boys were improving a lot on their strength, and Lea with her speed. What about me Well, I had a hard time seeing the difference. Mr. Vernon would always tell me that practice would make me stronger, and this was what helped motivate me to continue.
Each practice there was at least one boy who would make fun of me and say, “Oh, you’re too short to box. Mr. Vernon has to bend down when you are on the boxing pads; oh, you’re not strong enough; you punch like a mouse.”
I know those comments were not to hurt me, but just to have fun. It’s true. I’m a small and short person and I did lack confidence; but hearing those comments can either bring you down, or make you feel motivated to show them they are wrong. In my case, they started to discourage me. I didn’t have the strength to think they were wrong, and part of me thought that they were speaking the truth. I hid it inside my heart because I thought that showing I was doubting myself would make it worse.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

20. What is helpful in achieving difficult goals according to Victor
A. Gaining social support. B. Focusing on broad goals. C. Keeping the goals private.
【答案】17. B 18. A 19. B 20. A
【原文】To stay committed to your goals, try these strategies, Forbes, as Stanford professor suggests, starting with small, manageable habits. For example, practice an instrument for thirty seconds a day, or wash your hands before meals. These actions, though small, are more effective than goals like eating healthy food or getting fit, which can be hard to achieve without specific steps. Another tip is to track your progress with a Scorecard. This could mean recording how far you run or how much time you spend studying a language. Besides, he advises keeping your goals to yourself. Announcing them implies a sense of completion. It might mean that you’re less likely to follow through. However, victor, a new York university professor, opposed that. He thought you should tell your friends or family members. He added that having social support helps people achieve difficult goals. You could ask friends to remind you when you achieve a goal, you should throw a party to celebrate it with them.

A. Optimistic. B. Creative. C. Accessible. D. Modest.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then came one particular practice.

The experience taught me a great lesson.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Then came one particular practice. Somehow I was mad and angry, which made my punches suddenly stronger and faster. What amazed me was that gradually I just didn’t have that anger in me. After the practice, all my classmates burst into cheers for my great performance and Mr. Vernon also said that I was making great progress. With his praise I finally found the strength I needed. In the following practices, he was impressed with my good boxing skills, because they were getting powerful.
The experience taught me a great lesson. Boxing requires a lot of work and effort, but it has also taught me not to feel discouraged about what others say. Thanks to boxing, I have gradually realized that being short doesn’t define me. If we focus on our strong points and improve our weak ones, there is no reason for us to feel disappointed. Day by day I am becoming increasingly confident, definitely sure nothing will limit me to doing what tall or strong people can do.
