According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), six red wolf pups (幼崽) were found in North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in 2022. That’s great news for endangered red wolves, and marked the first time these pups had been born in the wild since 2018.
The red wolf, called “America’s wolf’, is the only large predator (捕食动物) whose historic range is found entirely within the United States. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads and farms, the wolves began to die out.
In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed, which was designed to protect animals that were in danger of dying out, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild. 14 of those wolves were caught and fed by researchers to protect them. Then, the FWS conducted a program called the Red Wolf Recovery Program. But by 1980, red wolves were believed to have been extinct in the wild.
Luckily, the wolves did well under people’s care, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon the FWS began releasing red wolves back into the wild. Between 1987 and 1994, the recovery program released 60 adult red wolves. Those wolves with tracking collars (颈圈) spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild. The program’s success led to many other programs aimed at bringing animals back from the edge of extinction.
But once again, humans threatened the surviving wolves. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. As the number of adults fell, the number of pups being born also began to drop. There has been a steady reduction in red wolves born in the wild from 2008, which saw 47 new wolves, to only four pups in 2018. In 2019, 2020 and 2021, no wild pups were born at all.
So the news that six pups hatched (孵出) in the wild was a great boost. But the good news wasn’t an accident.
28. What caused red wolves to die out according to the passage
A. Global warming. B. Lack of health care.
C. Being hunted by humans. D. Environmental pollution.
29. How did the FWS protect red wolves
A. It kept them in the wild. B. It carried out a recovery program.
C. It moved them into a new habitat. D. It made a new law to protect them.
30. What is the time order for the events described in the passage
①6 pups were born in the wild.
②14 red wolves were caught.
③60 red wolves were set free into the wild.
④ Red wolf numbers added up to 120 in the wild.
A. ①③④② B. ②④③①
C. ①②④③ D. ②③④①
31. What will be talked about in the following paragraph
A. The efforts that the FWS has made. B. The wishes from the researchers.
C. The accidents that happened this year. D. The drop of red wolves’ number.

This summer, Europe’s most popular attractions are fighting back against over tourism (过度旅游). As many destinations move to fine, ban, and protest tourists for bad behavior, Copenhagen is trying a different way to turn tourism from a negative effect to a positive one.
Tourism officials in Copenhagen introduced CopenPay, a new pilot project that will provide various gifts and benefits to travellers who conduct climate-friendly behavior, such as taking public transport or volunteering in clean-up efforts. These include free coffee, a free lunch made from locally sourced food, or free museum tours. Green actions have become an approach to enjoying Copenhagen’s free food and cultural experiences.
Mikkel Aar -Hansen, CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen, says the goal of CopenPay is not to increase tourism but promote a better way to travel. It aims to help transform tourism from “an environmental burden” into a “force for positive change.” He said, “An important step in this transformation is to change how we move around on the destination, what we consume, and how we interact with the locals.”
According to a 2023 sustainable report by Kanter, a London-based market research group, 81%of consumers say they want to act more sustainably (可持续地), but only 22% have changed their behavior. Mikkel Aar -Hansen views CopenPay as an experimental step to bridge the gap between the desire to act sustainably and actual behavior.
Will Copenhagen’s strategy work Only time will tell. Still, Randy Durband, chief executive of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, believes it “deserves some credit for not shaking a fist at bad behavior but trying to make it fun and have some rewards and benefits.”
32. What will be offered if the tourists behave well according to CopenPay

C. A free breakfast. D. Free public transportation.

C. A free breakfast. D. Free public transportation.
