3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (增材制造), has been in use since 1986. Before that, 3D printing wasn’t so important. Now, however, industries have begun using additive manufacturing.
3D printing in fashion
More and more people have begun using 3D printing in industries such as food and fashion. However, there has not been an active market for 3D-printed shoes for years. The possibilities with shoes may be endless.
There are risks in the fashion and shoe industries when considering a long-term move to 3D printing. This would mean a change of design and production methods with a huge cost of buying new machines and materials. It is a risk without certain profit (收益), but the future of 3D-printed shoes is unbelievable because these shoes are recyclable (可回收的). It is unusual and it is a business risk. But it could be part of saving the planet from the thousands of shoes that end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) every year.
3D printing in food
Even more excellent is 3D-printed food. Beginning with a paste (糊状物) and then the printer produces shapes and designs from a computer. This process is not easy, but restaurants and food companies are still trying out the technology.
At Columbia University, researchers have begun using lasers (激光) to cook the food as it prints, opening up the world of cooking. Once, they produced a piece of cheesecake in 30 minutes. While the researchers believe the technology will continue to grow and gain interest, it is currently much too expensive for people to use regularly.
1.How was 3D printing before 1986
2.What industries have used 3D printing according to the passage
3.Why can 3D-printed shoes save the planet
4.How did the researchers open up the world of cooking
5.What do you think of the future of 3D printing

We make decisions every day, from simple choices like what to eat for lunch to important ones like which high school to enter. But sometimes it can be hard to make the correct decision. What barriers are preventing us from reaching better results
Perfectionism (完美主义)
For some people, making decisions is difficult. According to Alice Boyes, a writer for Harvard Business Review, this difficulty can be related to perfectionism. Perfectionists try to find the best solution to every problem and are unable to move forward when they can’t find one. There are also other obstacles (阻碍) perfectionism creates with decision-making. For example, they set unrealistic (不切实际的) expectations, expect the worst result, and don’t accept uncertainty (不确定性).
Bias (偏见)
According to Professor Susan Krauss from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, US, people often make poor decisions because they depend on personal bias rather than the background in which things happen. Different biases influence our decisions in different ways. Having a self-serving bias means making decisions that make us feel good about ourselves, even if they might not be the best decisions for anyone else. Authority (权威) bias happens when we trust someone just because they are an authority figure (人物), even if others might have better ideas.
Intelligence
David Robson, an award-winning science writer, spoke on the BBC’s Crowd Science that being intelligent can sometimes prevent people from making correct decisions. At times, intelligence is used to create explanations for irrational beliefs (不合理的观念). Robson believes that humility (谦逊) is key to making a good decision. People who can accept that they might be wrong are more likely to consider different views and make better decisions.
6.What does the underlined word “it” mean in the first paragraph
7.How do perfectionists make decisions
8.What does the self-serving bias mean
9.Why does Robson believe humility is key to making good decisions
10.How do you make decisions Give one example.
Mickey Mouse and Snow White are popular with children. But do you know how their creator, Walt Disney, brought them to life
Disney was born into a poor family in the US in 1901. He liked drawing animals on the farm when he was a kid. A neighbor often bought his pictures. This encouraged him to be an artist when he grew up.
At the age of nine, he got his first job of delivering (投递) papers. He had to get up at 3:30 every morning and he began to work half an hour later. He worked till 6:00 in the morning. Then he hurried home for breakfast and went to school.
When Disney was older, he tried to get a full-time job, but it was hard. When he was 19, he started an art company (公司) with a friend. But soon it closed. Later he set up another company, but that one failed, too. Disney didn’t lose heart. He believed in himself.
Three years later, he and his brother set up a cartoon company in Hollywood. It turned out to be a great success. “When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, and then you’ll make it,” he said.

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of waste in your hand is recyclable or not To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to divide the waste. The students called the bin Waste Collection Point.
The bin uses a camera to know the kind of the waste and divides it into plastic, paper, glass or other kinds. To make sure the bin can divide waste correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took over 500 pictures of each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles (角度), so it has a better rate of accuracy (精确度),” said one of the students.
The students had the idea of the smart bin two years ago because they saw a lot of rubbish here and there in their village. Every weekend, they had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.
The students decided to invent a special recycling bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. Although the school ended at 2 p.m., the team members would continue to work on their invention until 6 or 7 p.m. at school.
“Our bin is now in its third generation (代). Before graduation, we hope that it can be widely used in the city.” The students said, “Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle waste and protect our environment.”

Look around you—how many plastic things can you find in your house Most homes today are almost full of plastics, from water bottles to clothes, chairs, and even computers. Regretfully, so are our rivers and oceans.
According to the report, about 583 billion plastic bottles were produced in 2021. That is 100 billion more than just five years ago. This year, five trillion (万亿) plastic bags were used. That was 160,000 every second. Americans alone use half a million drinking straws (吸管) every day.
However, very little of the plastic that goes into recycling bins (垃圾箱) can make it through the recycling process (过程). Experts (专家) think that only around 9% of plastic is recycled. About 16% is burned for electricity or heat. The rest ends up in landfills or bodies of water.
So how do you make sure plastic things you use are recycled Begin by making sure the things you put in your recycling bin can be recycled. And in most cases, plastic things can’t be used again if they have more than one kind of plastic in them. That’s because some plastics can’t be mixed together.
How about those plastic things that are able to be recycled at a recycling centre First, workers make sure that each plastic is clean. After that, the plastic things are made into small pieces. A little stream (小溪) ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then it reached a desert. “I went through so many difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert,” she thought. As she started, she found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed. “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, “If wind can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream answered, “That’s because the wind can fly, but I can not.”
“That’s because you can’t give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the wind and it can take you across me,” said the desert. “Give up what I am now No! No!” The little stream could not accept this idea. “The wind can carry the vapor (蒸汽) across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again,” said the desert. “And whether you’re a river or the vapor, your nature never changes.” After hearing this, the little stream went into the open arms of the wind. Remya is living in a small village in India. Her mother suddenly became ill and her father would have to spend his time caring for her. She and her twin sister had to do most of the housework. Because the poor family couldn’t afford an electric washing machine, the two girls would have to wash the clothes by hand in the local river.
Remya wanted to make a washing machine which could be used without electricity. She started studying electric washers to learn how they worked. Remya then designed a machine that used bicycle pedals (踏板) and chain. To find those items, she and her father went to a local auto shop. Workers there not only gave her the parts, but also helped her make the machine!
Here’s how the machine works: Remya used a cylinder (圆筒) to hold the clothes and put it in a cube (立方体). Next, she connected the bicycle pedals and the chain to the cylinder. As Remya pushed the pedals with her legs, the cylinder cleaned the clothes just like a regular washing machine.
Remya’s invention worked! She had created her own human-powered washing machine—and now a task that used to take several hours took only 30 minutes, which saves time and money for the poor people in the whole world. When Sammie Vance was just 8, she thought about a question: What breaks your heart “For me, it’s seeing people who need a friend,” the seventh grader from Indiana, US, told people magazine, “I’ve been lonely myself, I don’t want others to feel that way.”
Soon after a summer camp, Vance learned about buddy benches (伙伴长椅). These benches are seats at a school playground. A lonely child can sit on it, which shows that he or she is in need of a friend.
She loved this idea. “This would be really cool to have at my school,” Vance said. Then she got into action immediately. She collected 725 kilograms of bottle caps and found a company to turn the caps into benches for her school. According to Vance, these recycled benches cost much less than regular park benches and are good for the environment.
Vance collected more for benches at other schools too. She also made a Facebook page for others to follow her journey and make bottle cap donations. She was surprised that her small project has had an influence on people around the world. She even received bottle caps from Germany, Australia and Israel.
Today, Vance has helped make more than 200 recycled benches in schools and neighborhoods. But she has no plans of stopping. She said in an interview that even adults can use a buddy bench because people at any age can feel lonely. “I just look forward to making a difference,” she said, “and encouraging other people to make a difference.”

On December 26th, 2020, China passed a new law to protect the Yangtze River, the “mother river” of China. It is Yangtze River Protection Law. It took effect (生效) on March 1st, 2021. It’s the first law to protect a waterway in China.
The 6,397-kilometer Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia. It covers an area of about 1.8 million square kilometers, about one fifth of the national total. The Yangtze River provides one third of the country’s freshwater resources, but it has met lots of environmental problems in recent years, such as heavy pollution and overfishing. Especially, the river’s Chinese paddlefish (白鲟) has died out. So the “mother river” is in great need of protection.
