Yang Chen-Ning, a world-renowned physicist and Nobel laureate, passed away in Beijing on Oct 18 at the age of 103, according to Tsinghua University.
Yang’s achievements have a profound impact on modern theoretical physics. His contributions to gauge field theory (规范场论) were essential for building the standard model of particle physics. In 1957, Yang was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics with Tsung-Dao Lee for discovering parity non-conservation in weak interactions. This finding changed the field of particle physics (粒子物理学) and challenged one of the most deeply held ideas about symmetry (对称性) in nature.
Yang’s life reflected not only scientific brilliance but also deep philosophical insight. Physics reveals eternal beauty through symmetry, while life often shows complexity through asymmetry (不对称), noted The Paper. Yang’s own life journey showed this contrast. At 35, when he became the first Chinese Nobel laureate, he held a Chinese passport. Yet Cold War restrictions kept him away from his homeland.
In 1971, when the US lifted travel restrictions to China, Yang returned and became one of the first Chinese-American scientists to visit the country after decades of separation, according to Xinhua. For years, he traveled back and forth, giving lectures and writing to introduce China to the world.
In December 2003, at 81, he moved from New York back to Beijing. A year later, he began teaching general physics to over 130 freshmen at Tsinghua University.
In 2015, Yang gave up his US citizenship and returned to China permanently. He called his home ”Gui Gen Ju” — a poetic symbol of a life that had finally come full circle, from wandering abroad to returning home.
4. What was Yang Chen-Ning’s most celebrated achievement that earned him the Nobel Prize
A. His work in statistical mechanics and gauge field theory.
B. Discovering parity non-conservation in weak interactions.
C. Building the standard model of particle physics.
D. His deep philosophical insights into symmetry.
5. What does the contrast between “symmetry in physics” and “asymmetry in life” suggest about Yang Chen-Ning, according to The Paper
A. He believed that physics was more important than personal experience.
B. His scientific ideals were disconnected from his real-life struggles.
C. His life illustrated the contrast between ideal beauty and real-world complexity.
D. He rejected the concept of symmetry after experiencing personal hardship.
6. What can we infer from Yang Chen-Ning’s life journey after winning the Nobel Prize
A. His scientific career peaked at the age of 35 and gradually declined afterwards.
B. He maintained a strong connection with China despite geopolitical challenges.
C. He primarily focused on theoretical research and avoided teaching responsibilities.
D. His decision to return to China was solely based on family reasons.
7. What is the most suitable title for the passage
A. The Standard Model: Yang Chen-Ning’s Scientific Legacy
B. A life dedicated to science and devotion to motherland
C. Parity Non-Conservation: How a Theory Won the Nobel Prize
D. Yang Chen-Ning: His Lifelong Teaching Career at Tsinghua

If you have something to ask, would you turn to AI chatbots or use a web browser On Oct 21, US tech company OpenAI released Atlas, a new web browser powered by ChatGPT at its core, which is seen as a challenge to the leading position of Google’s Chrome browser.
OpenAI said that Atlas allows people to easily access ChatGPT while browsing the web. It can generate summaries, answer questions and perform tasks right on any web page you’re visiting. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, called it a “once-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about and how to use one”.
Unlike traditional web browsers, where people have to navigate the internet entirely on their own, Atlas has an agent mode that lets ChatGPT operate the browser semi-autonomously. For example, if you ask it to “find a restaurant near you and book a table”, it will search, evaluate and try to make a reservation. With Atlas’ “browser memories” feature, which tracks your visited sites and activities, the AI even gains a detailed understanding of your online habits.
As for whether OpenAI can replace Google as the leader in the web browser market, it would be a big challenge since Google has a “ridiculous” market share, Paddy Harrington from the global research and consulting firm Forrester told AP. Google’s Chrome browser holds over 70 percent of the global market, according to data from Statcounter, an Ireland-based web analytics service.
Daniel Newman, CEO of the global consulting firm Futurum Group, holds similar ideas. He told AFP that he doesn’t see any short-term shifts, given how firmly established Chrome use is in modern daily life.
More than that, Atlas raises concerns about safety and privacy, as experts pointed out. Lena Cohen from the Electronic Frontier Foundation told USA Today that users should think twice before using Atlas as a full-time browser. While AI users might find its new features exciting, using Atlas for everyday tasks could lead to accidentally sharing all your activity with OpenAI.
However, in recent years, Google has indeed faced threats from AI since more users are turning to large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. As a result, Google has added AI-generated summaries to its search results. Many users find these summaries sufficient, leading to fewer clicks on links.
8. What makes Atlas different from traditional browsers
A. It allows AI to assist web browsing. B. It provides free summaries of news.
C. It can track users’ browsing history. D. It offers more search results to users.
9. What does Daniel Newman think about Atlas’ future
A. It is likely to replace Chrome soon. B. It may take time to influence users.
C. It should focus on business clients. D. It will quickly dominate the market.
10. What main concern do experts raise about Atlas
A. Its lack of practical functions. B. Its impact on system security.
C. Its weak technical performance. D. Its possible data collection risks.
11. What can be inferred about Google from the last paragraph
A. It has lost much of its market share. B. It depends less on ad income now.
C. It feels challenged by AI development. D. It struggles to keep pace with trends.
D
Live music came back after COVID-19-but so did its carbon footprint (碳足迹). With record sales falling, many artists depend on concerts to make money. However, these events can create a lot of carbon pollution. So, more singers are trying to make their shows eco-friendly by including green ideas in the concert experience.
For example, US singer Billie Eilish recently started a rule at her London concerts: All food sellers must offer only plant-based (vegan) food to cut pollution from raising animals. British band Coldplay also claimed last year that their Music of the Spheres tour produced 59 percent fewer CO2 emissions than their previous world tour.
These efforts are worthy of praise. Any step taken to reduce pollution should be praised, especially in a business that can create hundreds of tons of CO2 during one tour. According to some media reports, Taylor Swift made 393 tons of CO2 just flying to 11 shows in February 2024.
But here’s the problem: Some green ideas may look good but not bring real change.
Food rules are one example. I’m all for reusing bottles and cutting plastic, but forcing all fans to eat only vegan food at a concert feels a bit heavy-handed. And many green choices cost more money, which fans may have to pay.
Another issue is whether such eco-friendly policies are sustainable in the long run. It’s true that artists can influence fans, and it’s great to see Eilish and Google Maps help fans take greener transport. However, the Environmental Media Association (EMA) says it’s hard for artists to be green everywhere, because each place has different rules, tools and partners.
So, to make real change, we need to shift the pressure away from artists and fans. The music industry should build solar-powered concert halls and set clear pollution rules. When that happens, green concerts will no longer be the job of one artist-they will be part of an industry-wide movement.
12. Why does the author mention Taylor Swift’s carbon emissions from flying
A. To prove that air travel is a major polluter.
B. To show concerts create significant pollution.
C. To criticize her for harming the environment.
D. To compare her efforts with other artists’.
13. What is the author’s concern with some green concert ideas
A. They may go against local rules. B. They may set up a wrong example.
C. They may be not supported by fans. D. They may not make a real difference.
14. What does the underlined word “heavy-handed” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Too expensive. B. Very strict. C. Widely accepted . D. Highly effective.
15. What does the author propose to make concerts more sustainable
A. Making stricter regulations for concerts. B. Encouraging better consumption habits.
C. Getting the music industry to work together. D. Reducing the number of live concerts.

Providing feedback is an essential part of personal and career development. ____16____ One of the most effective and classic methods to make it easier for both the giver and receiver is the feedback sandwich technique, sometimes also referred to as a compliment (赞美) sandwich.
If you are seeking to enhance your career growth, learning about the feedback sandwich can be a game-changer. ____17____ Rather than simply focusing on what went wrong, it ensures that the person receiving the feedback also knows what went well. The process can be broken into three parts. A manager or superior starts by providing positive feedback to encourage a person to continue their good work. Afterward, they communicate constructive feedback for the person to improve. This feedback aims to be specific, behavioral, and relevant to the situation. ____18____
The feedback sandwich technique is a highly useful method. It can help soften the blow of criticism. By starting and ending with positive feedback, it’s easier for the recipient to receive the constructive criticism without feeling attacked. ____19____ As we all know, criticism is awkward, but when you’re giving potentially negative feedback, it’s easier when you’re also serving it up with two compliments. Additionally, it enables the meeting or an interaction to end on a positive note.
____20____ Many people are knowledgeable about this technique, which might make it sound insincere or predictable if not done correctly. Also, when feedback becomes a routine, employees can start to perceive positive feedback as simply a form of sugarcoating the negatives, thus reducing its value. Hence, positive feedback should not simply be seen as something to cushion the negative, but should be delivered so as to reinforce and encourage good performance.
A. It’s essential to be aware of its limitations, though.
B. Similarly, it is also easier for the giver to offer feedback.
C. The manager then ends the feedback session with positive feedback.
D. The technique may lead to unclear and indirect personal communication.
E. Delivering constructive criticism, however, can be challenging if not done correctly.
F. It may not be for every situation, but it can make negative feedback more digestible.
G. This technique involves using constructive feedback wrapped between two layers of positive feedback.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart, I was sad because I couldn’t stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas miming came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad. Merry Christmas!” was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys’ faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection (检查) had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gins, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua. I’d like to suggest using AI tools like Deepseek for marking compositions instead of the “peer-cooperation” way.
There are several reasons for this. Firstly, AI tools like Deepseek can provide immediate feedback. Secondly, the feedback is highly detailed. It can point out not only grammar and spelling mistakes but also offer in-depth analysis of vocabulary usage and logical coherence. This helps us better understand our weaknesses. Moreover, AI can give a wide range of language suggestions, enabling us to learn different ways of expression.
I sincerely hope you’ll consider this proposal. It could potentially bring about a more efficient and effective writing - learning experience for all of us.
Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】I had to admit that my disappointment was growing steadily. I was wondering whether I could get a gift when my younger son ran to me, who was really kind enough to save my face. He asked me to admire his gift which he deeply believed was carefully chosen by Santa Claus. He said happily that he would share some of the gifts of his and allow me to choose one from them. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, still feeling disappointed.
Suddenly my wife walked up to me. It seemed that she had guessed how I felt. She asked me to look at the Christmas tree which was decorated with so many boxes. I think she was showing off her efforts on the decoration but she took off a small box and passed it to me smiling and saying it was for me. I opened it and saw a letter which read “We will never forget you. Merry Christmas!” Under the letter was a watch which was clicking with delight. I was moved to tears.
