Pop Mart toys are becoming more and more popular, not only among children but also among adults. Peter’s mum, Lisa, a 30-year-old woman, is a big fan of Pop Mart’s LABUBU toy. She says the toy helps her relax. Pop Mart now has over 530 stores worldwide, and in 2024, it made more than 13.2 billion yuan in sales.
One reason why Pop Mart is so popular is the trend (时尚) of “big kids”. Many people from Gen Z (who were born between 1997 and 2012) enjoy doing things that remind (使想起) them of childhood. Collecting toys is one of them. Claire, a fan of these toys, feels close to her LABUBU toy because it is similar to her own personality (性格).
Another reason is the excitement of “blind boxes”. A blind box is a small box with a mystery toy inside. You don’t know which one you will get until you open it. This surprise makes people want to buy more. Amanda Lee, a 26-year-old from Singapore, opens blind boxes with her coworkers during lunch breaks. She says it’s a fun way to relax and share feelings with others.
Pop Mart’s success shows that people enjoy things that bring joy and emotional connection. The toys are more than just fun—they are a way for people to show themselves and feel young again.

A. People who are having children.

3. What is a “blind box”

I'd been out to dinner that evening as usual. I cleaned the dirt from the window to get a better look inside. Several violins hung from the dark walls, quietly waiting to be chosen. As my eyes rested on them, I felt as though I were looking through a window into my own past.
My childhood was all about the goals I had set, most of which had been chosen by Mom. She was like, “Join the swim team, Tara. Your sister is a good swimmer; surely you will be, too.” Every Saturday I begged Mom not to make me go to the swim meet, but had little chance of success. I was the last always. I was to give up but I heard my father's encouraging shouts to cheer me on. He would always be there with a warm, dry towel, telling me how proud he was of my efforts.
Then came a turning point in my life the day our school orchestra (乐团) visited my class, and gave a show. The drums troubled me. The flutes bored me. But the violin… ah, the violin. It made the sweetest sound I'd ever heard! My heart was dancing along with its flowing tune. For the first time in my life, I went so wild with joy.
I signed up for the orchestra! They said yes! I ran all the way home after school, and told it to my parents with a fear that they might disagree with my decision. They didn't. Mom was thrilled to see me finally excited about something, and Dad smiled at me.
I began practicing the violin with great passion, and rose quickly in ability. Before long I had won the first seat in the community orchestra...
1. What came to Tara's mind when she saw the violin
A. Her terrible past. B. An unforgettable sport event.
C. The stories behind the violin. D. Her childhood memory.
2. Which words can best describe Tara's dad

C. The sound of the violin. D. The manner of the director.
4. What made Tara win the first seat in the community orchestra
A. The big improvement in her taste. B. Her strong desire for success.
C. Her natural gift for music. D. The rapid progress in her ability.
5. What does Tara's story want to tell us
A. Hard work pays off. B. Passion drives success.
C. Family support is everything. D. Talent is the key to achievement.

At the age of 50, Phoebe was told that she had cancer, with less than a year to live. Hearing the news, she decided to spend the rest of her life doing what she loved most—watching birds.
She went off to some of the world’s most amazing natural places at once. Her trips were really hard. But Phoebe surprised her doctors and her family as she carried on travelling. Years came and went, she was still alive.
Ten years later, the cancer came back. But as she continued with her trips, the cancer went away again. At the age of 61, she had seen 7,530 kinds of birds and was named “the world’s leading bird watcher.”
Four years later, during a trip to Mexico, she set a new record when she found species number 8,000. In fact, at that time only 12 people around the world had seen more than 7,000kinds of birds!
Phoebe’s interest in bird-watching started when she moved to Missouri. There, she joined a group of people who were interested in birds, insects and plants. She became very worried about pollution and its influence on the environment. “We have to protect nature, or the future people won’t be able to watch these beautiful birds.” she said.
Sadly, when she was 68, she died in a car accident on the island where she had stayed for two weeks and added another five to her list of over 8,400 species. Four years later, the American Birding Association made her memoirs (回忆录) available. Many people have enjoyed reading this moving book. For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints, hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin’s eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was “Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.
Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient. It could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.
