I’d been out to dinner that evening as usual. I cleaned the dirt from the window to get a better look inside. Several violins hung from the dark walls, quietly waiting to be chosen. As my eyes rested on them, I felt as though I were looking through a window into my own past.
My childhood was all about the goals I had set, most of which had been chosen by Mom. She was like, “Join the swim team, Tara. Your sister is a good swimmer; surely you will be, too.” Every Saturday I begged Mom not to make me go to the swim meet, but had little chance of success. I was the last always. I was to give up but I heard my father’s encouraging shouts to cheer me on. He would always be there with a warm, dry towel, telling me how proud he was of my efforts.
Then came a turning point in my life the day our school orchestra (乐团) visited my class, and gave a show. The drums troubled me. The flutes bored me. But the violin… ah, the violin. It made the sweetest sound I’d ever heard! My heart was dancing along with its flowing tune. For the first time in my life, I went so wild with joy.
I signed up for the orchestra! They said yes! I ran all the way home after school, and told it to my parents with a fear that they might disagree with my decision. They didn’t. Mom was thrilled to see me finally excited about something, and Dad smiled at me.
I began practicing the violin with great passion, and rose quickly in ability. Before long I had won the first seat in the community orchestra...
1. What came to Tara’s mind when she saw the violin
A. Her terrible past. B. An unforgettable sport event.
C. The stories behind the violin. D. Her childhood memory.
2. Which word can best describe Tara’s dad
A. humorous and kind B. caring and supportive
C. strict and serious D. tolerant and helpful
3. What amazed Tara during her school orchestra’s show
A. The tune of the flutes. B. The beat of the drums.
C. The sound of the violin. D. The manner of the director.
4. What made Tara win the first seat in the community orchestra
A. The big improvement in her taste. B. Her strong desire for success.
C. Her natural gift for music. D. The rapid progress in her ability.
5. What does Tara’s story want to tell us
A. Hard work pays off. B. Passion drives success.
C. Family support is everything. D. Talent is the key to achievement.

I’m fascinated (着迷的) by stories about how people started gardening (园艺).
My parents were interested in gardening so it was something that I was just around in my younger years. Because of school and trying to act like my friends, I stopped my interest for many years. Looking back, it was just pushed down, not completely gone (完全消失).
As I grew older, something happened. Maybe I realized that I was never going to be one of the “cool kids”. Or maybe I was at a point in my life when I felt like I wanted to be my true self. I was back in my garden.
There is an advantage to starting gardening with kids when they’re young. I’m talking about getting them to be a part of it, not making them interested in it. Interests are personal. If a child isn’t into something, don’t force (勉强) them.
A lot of my friends work with plants for a living. They often talk about how helping out in the garden as kids really influenced their careers (事业). It’s like a special seed (种子) was planted in their hearts when they were young. That seed later grew into a love for gardening that they carry with them throughout their lives. It just goes to show how important those early experiences can be. They help shape (塑造) who we become and what we love to do.
I’ve never heard anyone talk excitedly about being taught or told things about plants and gardens. Cool things can happen when we get in touch with something in a physical way.
1. Who played a role in shaping the writer’s interest in gardening
A. Gardeners in stories. B. His classmates.
C. His parents. D. His teachers at school.
2. Why did the writer stop gardening when she was young
A. Her parents asked her to focus on schoolwork
B. She wanted to be like other kids at school.
C. She found gardening too difficult.
D. She moved to a place without a garden.
3. The phrase “pushed down” in Paragraph 2 most likely means “________”.
A. 完全遗忘 B. 被新爱好取代
C. 被压抑但依然存在 D. 被彻底放弃
4. What does the writer compare his friends’ early experiences to in Paragraph 5
A. A TV show about gardening. B. A seed planted in their hearts.
C. A speech about plants. D. A book about plant care.
5. What does the writer mainly want to tell us
A. Gardening is the best hobby for children.
B. Gardening skills need to be learned from parents.
C. Early experiences may influence lifelong hobbies.
D. Schools should teach students more about gardening.
D

As teenagers, most students are trying their best to get into a good high school. But a Canadian teenager named William Gadoury is not interested in this kind of thing. Instead, he has a great interest in Mayan (玛雅人的) culture. Recently, the 15-year-old boy said that he had discovered a lost Mayan city in Mexico.
William lives in Quebec, Canada. He showed great interest in Mayan culture at a young age. Many boys usually like spending their free time playing computer games, but William likes learning about Mayan culture. To his surprise, he noticed that while people from other cultures liked building their cities near the water, Mayans liked building their cities in forests, on mountains, or in other places far away from the water. Why did they make such choices William wanted to find out the answer. After studying the locations of 117 known Mayan cities, he found out the connection between the cities and the stars: it seems the Mayans built their cities to match different constellations (星座).
William compared the known Mayan cities with 23 constellations. While studying the final constellation, he saw three stars but only two known cities. So he guessed there might be another city that people hadn’t found yet. With the help of the Canadian Space Agency and Google Maps, he finally found a place that he believes is the lost Mayan city. However, not all scientists think so. One scientist says that the so-called “lost Mayan city” is in fact an abandoned corn field that wasn’t used many years ago.
