Text 10
Harry came to his mother one morning while she was having her breakfast, and said to her, “No one at my school likes me, Mother. The teachers don't, and the children don't. Even the cleaners and the bus drivers hate me.”
“Well, Harry,” his mother answered, “Perhaps you aren't very nice to them. If a few people don't like a person, he or she may not be responsible for that. But if a lot of people don't, there is usually something wrong, and that person really needs to change.”
“I'm too old to change,” Harry said, “I don't want to go to school.”
“Don't be silly, Harry,” his mother said, going to the garage to get the car out. “You have to go. You're quite well, and you still have a lot of things to learn. And besides that you're headmaster of the school.”

Four Places Named After Women Scientists in Antarctica
There are many scientific breakthroughs made by women in Antarctica. Here are four landmarks in Antarctica and the female pioneers they're named for.
Jones Terrace (梯田)
The icefree terrace in eastern Antarctica's Victoria Land bears Jones' name. In 1969, geochemist Lois M. Jones led the first allfemale research team from the U.S.to work in Antarctica. Jones and her team studied chemical weathering in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, an icefree area of Antarctica. Through chemical analyses of rocks they had collected, Jones and her team discovered many geochemical characteristics of the valley's icecovered lakes.
Mount Fiennes
8,202foothigh Mount Fiennes, located on Antarctica's largest island—Alexander Island—is named for Ginny Fiennes. She established and maintained 80foottall radio towers in Antarctica. In 1985, Fiennes became the first female who was invited to join the Antarctic Club, a British supper club open to individuals who have spent extended time in the Antarctic region.
Francis Peak
The 3,727foottall peak on Antarctica's Adelaide Island is named after Dame Jane Francis, who is the first female director of the British Antarctic Survey, the national polar research institute of the UK. Her collection of fossils on Seymour Island helped conclude in a 2021 paper that Antarctica's abundant plant fossils indicate the continent once had a much warmer climate than it currently does.
Peden Cliffs
Peden Cliffs near Antarctica's Marie Byrd Land are proof of the labor of Irene Peden. She was the first American female scientist to both live and work in Antarctica, where she used radio waves to study ice sheets. Peden and her team determined how very low frequency radio waves spread over long polar distances by measuring pathways in the ice. They also used varying radio wave frequencies to measure the thickness of Antarctica's ice sheets.

Often called “the Lady with the Lamp”, Florence Nightingale was a caring nurse and a leader. She is mostly known for making hospitals a cleaner and safer place.
Although her parents were from England, Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Italy while they were traveling. Growing up in a wealthy family, Florence Nightingale was home schooled by her father and expected to get married at young age. However, Nightingale believed she should help the poor and the sick. Despite the disfavour at the beginning, her father allowed her to go to Germany and then Paris to study at last. By the time she was 33, Nightingale had already made a name for herself in the nursing community.
When the Crimean War began in 1853, the British, with the lack of medical supplies, overcrowding, and dirty conditions, were unprepared to deal with a large number of sick and injured soldiers. The Secretary of War, Sidney Herbert asked Nightingale to manage a group of nurses that would go to treat the wounded soldiers. When they got there, the doctors were unwelcoming because they did not want to work with female nurses. However, as the number of patients increased, the doctors needed their help. The nurses brought supplies, nutritious food and cleanliness to the military hospital. Nightingale was known for carrying a lamp and checking on the soldiers at night, so they gave her the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp”. Within six months, Nightingale and her team transformed (彻底改变) the hospital, and the death rate went down significantly because of their work.
When Nightingale returned from the war, she continued to improve the conditions of hospitals. She wrote numerous books and reports on healthrelated issues. In her later years, often bedridden from illness, she continued to promote safe nursing practices until her death. Although Florence Nightingale died on August 13th, 1910, at the age of 90, her legacy (遗产) continues.

Esperanto (世界语) was created in the late 1800s by Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, a Polish medical doctor. He alone built the basis for the language and helped introduce it into the world.
Though Zamenhof's profession was a physician, he was no amateur (外行) in languages. Zamenhof said Russian was his mother tongue—the area of Poland he lived in was then part of the Russian Federation—but he generally spoke Polish every day. Evidence also shows that he learned Yiddish from his mother and that he studied German, English, Spanish, Lithuanian, Italian and French. In addition, Zamenhof learned the classical languages Hebrew, Latin and Aramaic in school. Esperanto was not the first constructed language he'd dealt with. First, he learned a bit of Volapuk (沃拉普克语), which was invented in Germany a decade before Esperanto. Having command of so many languages had a great impact on his creation of Esperanto, which was Zamenhof's 14th language.
During his life, Zamenhof became extremely interested in the idea of creating a tolerant world, free from the horrors (恐怖) of war. He dreamed of a day when people could come together. To make this world a reality, he decided the best thing he could do was make an international language. It would not be anyone's mother tongue, but people can quickly learn it as a second language to make conversation easily with people from anywhere in the world.
Why would Zamenhof create Esperanto when English basically already was used as an international language The problem is that using English gives a huge advantage to people and places that already speak English. Esperanto tries to bypass political and cultural problems by being a neutral (中性的) language. Yet Esperanto is not without flaw. It was strongly influenced by European language, which can put people who speak Asian languages at a distinct disadvantage in learning and speaking Esperanto. Esperanto's simple rules might make it easier to learn than other languages for an Asian speaker, but it still loses some of its “neutrality”.

Wildfire season has begun in many places around the world. The dangerous smoke wildfires produce can spread far and wide. It blocks sunlight, poisons the air and damages the health of people and other living things.
“Some of those living things could be the plants in gardens,” says gardening expert Jessica Damiano, who writes gardening stories for the Associated Press. Damiano lives in New York City and recently experienced several days of very smoky air. Wildfires in eastern Canada were the source.
Damiano, like other people, limited the time she spent outdoors when the air quality was poor. She also wore a face covering when she had to go outside.
But the plants in her garden had no such escape. They had to breathe the poisoned air through the extremely small holes in their leaves.
Pollutants in smoke landing on plants can block sunlight, which is essential for photosynthesis Reduced photosynthesis results in reduced energy. That means slower growth. Additionally, smoke can also affect a plant's ability to take in nutrients
Brooke Edmunds, a plant scientist and community horticulturalist with Oregon State University Extension, said plants that are affected by smoke for a short amount of time will usually recover quickly. “It depends on how close they are,” she said. “There could also be a localized effect, where one garden is covered in ash (灰烬), and a halfmile away, there's nothing because that's the way the wind was moving things around.”
The best thing home gardeners can do is keep an eye on plants. Edmunds suggests giving plants some extra love and care. “Wash the plants gently to remove pollutants left by smoke. Then give them a long, slow drink of water. Most will pull through,” Edmunds said. However, people should not use leaf blower machines to remove ashes from plants because they will risk breathing in what is blowing around.

Like many restaurants, Mama Kwan's Grill and Tiki Bar in Outer Banks, North Carolina, is used to getting calls for takeout. However, when owner Kevin Cherry received a longdistance call from Mary Simmons in late February, it wasn't for your typical togo order.
Simmons was desperately trying to make her best friend's dying wish come true—one final meal from her family's favorite vacation restaurant. The problem Her friend, Heather Bowers, lived six hours away in West Virginia. Knowing it was a long shot, Simmons hoped the food could be shipped.
Three and a half years ago, registered nurse Heather Bowers received the news no one wanted to hear—she had cancer. Diagnosed with stage 4, she spent the remaining years of her life bravely battling the disease.
“Right out of the gate it was stage 4,” Simmons said. “What she went through in three and a half years would've brought down the strongest man.” The cancer, combined with the painful chemotherapy treatment (化疗), caused great suffering to Bowers. In late February, Bowers, 47, was in hospital, preparing to say her final goodbye. Bowers had one last wish on her deathbed: a pork plate from Outer Banks restaurant Mama Kwan's.
It was undoubtedly a heartbroken scene for her best friend, Simmons, who valued the relationship with Bowers so much. Though overcome with emotion, Simmons was determined to fulfill her dying friend's final request. Knowing time was running out for Bowers, Simmons took action immediately. After figuring out the number for Mama Kwan's, she dialed it without hesitation. Through tears and heartfelt words, Simmons poured her heart out, detailing Bowers' battle with cancer and conveying the importance of this final request. Her voice trembling with a mix of hope and despair, she begged the restaurant to step up to help.

(2024·山东临沂高二检测) Society sometimes thinks disabled people can't do much of anything. But that misconception has been blown out of the water by successful people who have disabilities. Helen Keller could not see or hear. Thomas Edison and Beethoven were deaf. We also have local achievers who are rarely recognized, for instance, Bob Church.
“When you listen to people on the radio, you often wonder how they look. I wonder at their reaction when I go out to work for the radio station and for the first time they see me. I wonder what their reaction is when they know I have to walk with braces and crutches (拐杖),” Church said.
Church, who got polio (小儿麻痹症) as a child, has hosted the earlymorning radio program for almost 14 years. He is likable—the kind of guy you would love to have over to watch a ball game or attend a party.
“I had an accident and broke my legs, and I was in a wheelchair. That was like taking two legs off me, since I used crutches to walk and I couldn't use one arm,” Church said. “That's the first time I realized that was a problem.” But he isn't going to let it get him down.
Though he admits he is painful when he gets up each day, it doesn't seem to be a big deal. Church says he does have some ideas of things he would like to do.
“I take up golf. I'd like to teach disabled kids. If you don't know, you can't do it. If no one says you can't do something, you can usually find a way to do it. You know, I've affected a lot of people, just by my being. It makes me feel good. A lot of people I know don't care that I have a disability. Those I don't know say ‘Wow,’ when they find out,” Church said.

Nearly 200 years after Ludwig van Beethoven's death, researchers have pulled DNA from his hair, searching for clues about his health problems and hearing loss.
They weren't able to solve the mystery of the German composer's deafness or stomach problems. But they did find a genetic risk for liver disease, plus a liverdamaging hepatitis B (乙型肝炎) infection in the last months of his life. These factors, together with his frequent drinking, were probably enough to cause the liver failure that is widely believed to have killed him, according to a study published in the journal Current Biology.
March 26, 2023 marked the 196th anniversary of Beethoven's death in Vienna in 1827, at the age of 56.The composer himself wrote that he wanted doctors to study his health problems after he died. Since his death, scientists have long tried to put together Beethoven's medical history and have suggested various possible explanations for his many health problems.
Now, with advanced DNA technology, researchers have been able to pull genetic clues from some samples of Beethoven's hair that was cut off and kept in his memory. Using almost 3 meters of Beethoven's hair, scientists were able to pull out pieces of DNA and put together a genome that they could study for signs of genetic disease.
The researchers didn't find any clear signs of what caused Beethoven's hearing loss or stomach problems. However, they found two things probably weren't the causes: celiac disease (乳糜泻)— a health problem caused by eating the gluten protein — and lactose (乳糖) intolerance — a health problem caused by the lactose sugar in milk.
The researchers also made a surprising discovery: when they tested DNA from living members of the Beethoven family, scientists found a difference in the Y chromosomes (染色体) that get passed down on the father's side. The Y chromosomes from five men in Beethoven's family matched each other — but they didn't match the composer's. This suggests that sometime before Beethoven was born, a child in the composer's family was born from an extramarital relationship.

A.Lactose Sugar in Milk Can Cause Celiac Disease
B.DNA from Hair Offers Clues for Beethoven's Disease
C.Advanced DNA Technology Help Make New Discovery

(2024·安徽合肥六校高二上学期期中) Going from being called a “stupid molecule (分子) ” to “the secret of life”, our discovery and understanding of DNA has come a long way. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA—the pivotal (关键的) year when the socalled “secret of life” was uncovered by two scientists: James Watson from the US and Francis Crick from the UK.
Inherited characteristics like eye color, nose shape and even intelligence—scientists found the structure of the chemical which transmits these from one generation to another. “Discovering how these ‘chemical’ cards are shuffled (洗牌) and paired will keep the scientists busy for the next 50 years,” journalist Ritchie Calder commented in 1953 on the discovery. And it certainly has. The study of DNA has led to worldchanging advances in many fields.
“DNA makes time fluid (流动的),” said The Irish Times. It lets us redefine the future. For example, in medicine, DNA helps us identify “weak points” in the human genome (基因组) that might be prone to disease. Through a technique called gene therapy, a person's genes can be modified to treat or cure certain diseases. Another example is agriculture, where work on plant DNA has allowed us to change the way we breed (培育) crops, opening the door for genetically modified plants and advances in food security.
DNA can also shed light on the past. In forensic (法医的) science, DNA analysis has come to serve as a vital form of evidence in crime scenes, with “many millions having been proven guilty or innocent” through its usage, said the website AZoLife Sciences. And DNA in specimens (标本) like fossils and artifacts (文物) can give us vital information on humans and other species.
But what's next for DNA research Improvements in technology are allowing us to utilize DNA in new ways. As the cost of DNA technologies decreases and related machines become more efficient, it becomes more accessible, reported Wired magazine. In medicine, DNA plays a key role in furthering the development of “personalized medicine” —designing treatment plans based on the genomes and other specific factors of individual patients. As “natural supercomputers”, DNA can store large amounts of data. So scientists are busy learning from DNA to make our computers store more data and work even faster.

(2024·江苏连云港高二检测) In 2018, a major new exhibition opened at New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).The show brought together more than a hundred works by a single Brazilian artist: Tarsila do Amaral. Although widely celebrated in her native country, the artist was relatively unknown outside Brazil. So who was Tarsila
Born in 1886, Tarsila do Amaral is considered the mother of modern art in Brazil. She first developed a love for art after her parents sent her to study in Spain. She returned to Europe a few years later, and settled in Paris. Several artists there, including Picasso, were beginning to experiment with new forms—less realistic and more abstract. The new approaches continued to influence Tarsila after she returned to Brazil.
Approaches to art in Brazil at that time were relatively conservative (保守的).Traditional European styles dominated, with works mainly featuring natural, religious, or historical scenes in soft colors. Tarsila decided to take a different direction: “I want to be the painter of my country,” she wrote. Her images began to reflect Brazil's diverse identity—a mix of native, African and European peoples. She used strong, vivid colors to paint reallife scenes of the nation's farmers, countryside and wildlife. This had never been done before in Brazilian art.
One of Tarsila's most famous works is Abaporu (1928), which means “Man Who Eats People”. The painting has a playful quality, but its look and feel are distinctly Brazilian. The work later inspired a Brazilian art movement called antropofagia. Brazilian artists began to take in styles from other cultures and mix them with local influences. The result was something uniquely Brazilian.
Tarsila do Amaral died in Sao Paulo in 1973, aged 86. But her artworks and legacy live on in her native Brazil. “For Brazilians, her recognition is off__the__charts,” says James Rondeau, director of the Art Institute of Chicago.“ She is the Picasso of Brazil.” Now, with the MoMA exhibition, Tarsila's art is being appreciated by a new audience of admirers around the world.

(2024·浙江丽水高二联考) Close your eyes and picture yourself walking in the town. You can probably imagine the turns you'd need to take and the landmarks you'd encounter. This ability to imagine such scenarios in our minds is thought to be crucial to humans' ability to plan ahead and has long been considered as a feature that distinguishes humans from animals. But a new study has found that rats can think about objects and places that are not right in front of them.
Like humans, when rats experience places and events, specific neural (神经系统的) activity patterns are activated in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain responsible for spatial (空间的) memory. In the study, the researchers developed a brainmachine interface (BMI), which allows them to test whether a rat can activate hippocampal activity to imagine going to a location.
First, some rats were placed into a virtual reality environment and were rewarded when they traveled through this environment towards their goals by running on a treadmill (跑步机). At the same time, the BMI system recorded the rat's hippocampal activity. The researchers could see which neurons were activated when the rat navigated the environment to reach each goal. Next, researchers disconnected the treadmill so that the rats could still see the virtual reality environment, but their running had no impact. By reproducing the brain activity they'd shown during the previous sessions, the rats could navigate to reward locations using just their thoughts.
“Although it's still unclear what the rat is experiencing while it's traveling, the team has done a convincing job of showing rats can voluntarily reactivate mental maps of familiar places,” said Shayna, a cognitive neuroscientist.
The research also shows that the BMI can be used to explore hippocampal activity, providing a novel system for studying this important brain region. Because the BMI is increasingly used in prosthetics (假肢), this new work also opens up the possibility of designing novel prosthetic devices based on the same principles.
5.What is the purpose of the new study?( )
A.To explore whether rats have the ability to imagine.
B.To compare how humans and rats process spatial memory.
C.To record how rats navigate in an unfamiliar environment.
D.To prove the hippocampus is associated with spatial memory in rats.
答案:A

6.What happened to the rats after the treadmill was disconnected?( )
A.They had difficulty running freely.
B.They demonstrated abnormal brain activity.
C.They could reach reward places using mental maps.
D.They were at a loss in the virtual reality environment.
根据第三段中“Next, researchers disconnected the treadmill so that the rats could still see the virtual reality environment, but their running had no impact. By reproducing the brain activity they'd shown during the previous sessions, the rats could navigate to reward locations using just their thoughts.”
7.What's Shayna's attitude towards the new study?( )
A.Concerned. B.Positive.
C.Doubtful. D.Uncaring.

(2024·福建三明高二期中联考) As a student, you have a lot of freedom when it comes to how you spend your time. But with that freedom comes the responsibility to make the most of your studying hours. Here are some tips to help you do just that.
Create a schedule
This means setting aside specific times for studying each day and then sticking to that schedule as closely as possible. Of course, there will be days when things come up, and you have to deviate (偏离) from your plan. 1(____).
Break up your study sessions into smaller periods
Our brain can only focus effectively for so long before we start losing concentration. 2(____),__ chances are much higher that you won't remember all of the information you're trying to learn. Instead, break up your study sessions into shorter periods of time, with breaks in between to help you relax and recharge.
Find a study place that works for you
3(____). Some people prefer to study in complete silence, while others find that some background noise helps them focus better. There is no right or wrong answer here—its all about finding a place to study. That allows you to work as efficiently as possible.
Take practice quizzes
This will not only help you check your understanding of the concepts but also identify any area that may need more review. 4(____),__it will be much easier for you to direct your study sessions accordingly and make better use of your time overall.
5(____)
If you find that you're struggling to understand the material or just not making progress as quickly as you'd like, seek assistance in time. There is no shame in admitting that you need assistance. In fact, it can save lots of time in the long run by getting you the support you need early on.
A.Learn to accept failure
B.Don't be afraid to ask for help
C.So if you try to study for several hours once
D.Make sure that every minute you spend studying counts
E.However, try not to go offtrack too often or for too long
F.Where you study can also affect how effectively you use your time
G.And once you know what specific topics or ideas you need to work on
1.答案:E
解析:由前文“This means setting aside specific times for studying each day and then sticking to that schedule as closely as possible. Of course, there will be days when things come up, and you have to deviate (偏离) from your plan.”可知,上文讲有时我们会因为临时事情偏离计划,而E项中“go offtrack”和上文“deviate from your plan”对应。故选E项。
2.答案:C
解析:由前文“Our brain can only focus effectively for so long before we start losing concentration.”和后文“chances are much higher that you won't remember all of the information you're trying to learn.”
3.答案:F
解析:由后文“Some people prefer to study in complete silence, while others find that some background noise helps them focus better. There is no right or wrong answer here—its all about finding a place to study. That allows you to work as efficiently as possible.”
4.答案:G
解析:由后文“it will be much easier for you to direct your study sessions accordingly and make better use of your time overall.” 而G项符合语境,其中“specific topics or ideas you need to work on”与后文“direct your study sessions accordingly”对应。
5.答案:B
解析:由后文可知,这段主要讲要学会寻求帮助,而B项“Don't be afraid to ask for help”符合语境,对下文有概括作用,且“help”与下文也对应。

1.答案:from
故填from。
2.答案:a
故填a。
6.答案:respected/respectable
故填respected/respectable。
9.答案:when
故填when。
