Text 10
Mr. Brown was tired of living in the big city where he worked. He wanted to move to the country and live in a house from which he could get to his office in the city early every day. He was looking for a house until he saw an ad in a newspaper one day. The ad said that a suitable house in a quiet area was up for sale at a reasonable price, and the house was within a stone's throw of a railway station from which there were frequent trains to the big city.
“That's exactly what I need,”Mr. Brown said to himself. So he called the house agency and arranged to go down by train the next day to have a look at the house.
The house agency met him at the station and they started walking. It took them at least 15 minutes to get to the house. When they reached, Mr. Brown said angrily,“I should be very interested to meet the man who threw the stone you mentioned in the newspaper.”

阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Four Ways Your Cat Tries to Communicate with You
Cats are amazing creatures, and while they can't talk to us, they certainly know how to communicate their needs and feelings. It's just up to us to learn how to listen to what they are saying.
Meowing
Cats meow at their owners for several reasons, including: to ask for food, to greet people, to ask for attention, to let you know they want to go outside/come inside. In addition, elderly cats suffering from cognitive disfunction, similar to Alzheimer's Disease (阿尔茨海默症) in humans, may meow due to becoming confused or disoriented, so we encourage you to schedule an appointment with us if your senior cat seems confused or is meowing more than usual.
Purring
While cats do purr as a sign of contentment, they also do it as a selfcomforting mechanism when sick, stressed or injured. If your cat is purring but also showing signs that something may be wrong, like hiding more than usual or refusing food/water, they could be sick or in pain.
Tail Posture
If they hold their tail straight up and have relaxed fur, they're likely to feel happy or curious. But if their fur stands on end while their tail is straight, this indicates fear or anger. Holding the tail low or hidden between the legs indicates insecurity, and a tail that's rapidly twitching back and forth suggests anxiety.
Rubbing
When your cat rubs against your legs or gives you head butts, they are telling you that they love you. That is not the only thing they are doing, though! Cats rub their bodies and cheeks against people and objects to mark their territory and to claim humans, other cats, and various objects as their own.

My wife and I were down at the beach and trying to find a place to park in one of the many, and somewhat expensive, public parking lots. We were trying to get down to the beach in time to watch the sunset—one of my alltime favorite things to do. After several failed attempts, we finally found one spot in the last lot and pulled into the only space available.
As we were about to pay the price of parking there, a woman came up to us and said she had just paid for two hours (all the time we needed) but she had just been called back home and asked if we would like to have her parking pass. She refused to take any money for it and insisted that we take it. We gladly accepted it and thanked her for her kindness.
It was truly a “paying it forward” experience that we have often done, but one that hasn't been done to us that often. I smiled at her with such gratitude. It was more than the price of the parking pass. Accepting the kindness of others is part of this process. We felt that and blessed by that kindness.
We got down to the beach in time to watch the sun setting because of this woman's kindness and we were so grateful. It was a wonderful experience and the sunset was such a wonderful sight!

In the darkness of a July night in 2016, I was walking toward the kiosk (售票亭) at the entrance to Camp 4, the campground in Yosemite National Park, when I tripped on a man lying on the dirt trail. In front of him, I saw dozens of other human shapes. It was 3 a.m., and they had already been there to get one of the 32 firstcome firstserved camping spots. I'd thought I had come early enough to be near the front of the line; now I wasn't sure I'd get a campsite.
Three years later, Yosemite National Park announced the reservation system for Camp 4 via Recreation. gov. Many other national park campgrounds have done the same in recent years. Yet this online reservation system has raised concerns.
A study showed that “online reservation systems present the unintended consequence of excluding (把……排斥在外) lowincome wouldbe campers”.
The reason includes socioeconomic factors related to the requirements of booking online, the study's lead author, Will Rice, told me. For example, lowerincome groups are less likely to have access to highspeed internet.
Then there is the issue of having to make a reservation far in advance. “There are many people who don't have a lifestyle that allows them to plan six months in advance for a vacation,” Dr. Rice said.
Fiftyfour years ago, the author Edward Abbey laid out his vision (愿景) for a carless national park system in his book. He believed vehicles and the passive tourism they enabled poisoned the national park experience. He wanted people to bike and hike. His ideas still appeal to those who want parks to remain as unspoiled (未遭破坏的) by humans as possible. But his proposals for achieving that vision, which would have made parks much less accessible to disabled people, older people and children, were wrongheaded.
Mr. Abbey did get something right, though. “Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit,” he wrote. That's why it's so important for the National Park Service to keep striving for (争取) fairer access to all of its parks and campgrounds.
【语篇解读】 本文是一篇议论文。作者在文中论述了国家公园野营地线上预订系统的弊端,认为这一系统对低收入人群不公平。
28.What happened to the author in 2016?( )
A.He failed to get a campsite at Camp 4.
B.He came across a camper who tried to cut in line.
C.He was annoyed by the park's firstcome firstserved rule.
D.He was amazed at how tough the competition for a campsite was.
答案:D
解析:推理判断题。根据第一段中的“It was 3 a.m., and they had already been there”和“I'd thought I had come early enough to be near the front of the line; now I wasn't sure I'd get a campsite.”可知,作者凌晨3点到达约塞米蒂国家公园的4号露营售票亭,本以为自己去得很早,能排到队伍前面,预订上野营地,结果发现有人比他去得更早,他根本没想到竞争会如此激烈。
29.What did the study find out about the online reservation system?( )
A.It helped attract wouldbe visitors.
B.It outperformed offline reservations.
C.It was unfriendly to lowincome groups.
D.It needed to increase its worrying speed.
答案:C
解析:推理判断题。根据第三段中的“‘online reservation systems present the unintended consequence of excluding lowincome wouldbe campers’”和接下来两段提到的原因可知,该研究发现线上预订系统对低收入人群并不友好。
30.What was Dr.Rice's attitude to the reservation system?( )
A.Critical. B.Grateful.
C.Uncaring. D.Confused.
答案:A
解析:细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中的“‘There are many people who don't have a lifestyle that allows them to plan six months in advance for a vacation’”可知,Rice认为很多人都没有办法提前很早进行预订,这导致他们根本抢不到野营地,故他对预订系统持批评态度。
31.In what aspect does the author agree with Mr.Abbey?( )
A.It is beneficial for people to bike and hike.
B.National parks should remain untouched.
C.Passive tourism should be discouraged.
D.Everyone needs equal access to nature.
答案:D
解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“get something right”和“fairer access to all of its parks and campgrounds”可知,作者认为每个人都应享有平等进入国家公园、平等获取野营地的权利,这一点与作家Abbey的看法相同。

High schools used to teach shop classes where students learned handson occupational skills like woodworking. Nowadays, most schools have changed shop classes in favor of academic core subjects. However, one organization doesn't think that academics and carpentry (木工工艺) have to be separated.
The National Science Foundation STEM Guitar Project is an organization that aims to get students excited about science, math, and the arts all at once, by teaching students how to make a guitar from the beginning.
Experts forecast that technical skills like the ones used in making the guitars could be the most indemand job in the future, according to The Conversation. Unfortunately, many high schools don't introduce students to mechanical precision, design, and manufacturing skills, because they are not on standardized tests, and because schools aren't aware of the future applications of these skills.
But STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is really needed to build a guitar. According to The Conversation, it's impossible to make a guitar without knowing science and math. To space the frets (音品) on the guitar's neck, guitar designers use a mathematical formula. STEM Guitar Project employee, Nancy Chang, said that “Using that formula to build a guitar you really care about and you want it to turn out and play really well, gives you a really good reason to figure out an equation (方程式) that otherwise would just be something from out of a book, that had no meaning.”
The STEM Guitar Project runs fiveday workshops for teachers each summer. At the workshop, teachers learn to make their own guitars, and are given a curriculum, textbooks, materials, and guitar kits to use in their classrooms. Teachers at the workshops report that the opportunity to make a guitar is fun and exciting. Mike Aikens, STEM Guitar Project cofounder, explained that “If you're exciting teachers, you're for sure going to excite kids”.
Thanks to the STEM Guitar Project, it opens students' and teachers' eyes to realworld applications of technical skills, and lets them know that real world math is much more exciting than theoretical concepts.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Kilimandjaro was a popular place for soccer fans who went to watch Middlesbrough F.C.play over the weekend to eat after the game. Waka Waka Chicken was one of the restaurant's signature dishes.
Everything seemed normal for the owner of the restaurant, Apollo, who always values the virtue of honesty, and his waiters. Customers were flocking in, and service was running smoothly that day. Apollo, to be honest, wasn't even there. He was having a good time with his family, completely unaware of what was going on in his restaurant. He had no idea that something unexpected was about to happen and that he'd be getting a rather awkward phone call from the waiter.
At about 11:00 a.m., three guys walked in, clearly interested in sitting down and eating some food. There's a good chance they came from out of town and were fans of the away team. At the very least, the staff could detect a difference in their accents. It wasn't long before they were attended to by a waiter who took their orders. After that, everything appeared to be going well...The three friends were glad they had chosen Kilimandjaro. Waka Waka Chicken with cheese was enjoyed by them. From their expression, the staff could tell these three guys were very satisfied with the food.
About one hour later, the three friends were prepared to pay for their meals. The total cost of the food was £35.They reached for their credit cards and handed them over as the waiter approached their table. However, they were shocked when the waiter informed them that they could only pay in cash. None of them carried cash with them. At this time, the waiter was asked to go to another table to take orders.Realizing the last train back home was to depart in an hour, the three friends had other ideas...
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

On returning, the waiter was surprised the three guys had gone without paying.

参考范文:
On returning, the waiter was surprised the three guys had gone without paying. The waiter had no choice but to contact Apollo. Apollo was completely confused when the waiter explained what had happened. He couldn't understand how, in today's world, a group of friends could walk into a restaurant, eat their meals, and then leave without paying. After a few days, there was still no sign that three gentlemen would return to pay for their meal. With each passing day, the owner's hopes of them returning faded.
Two weeks later, Apollo received an unexpected letter with £35 attached. Obviously, they were sent by the three men. In the letter, all three were deeply sorry for leaving the restaurant without paying. They said they had intended to find an ATM machine to draw some cash but didn't find one nearby. At that point, they had to leave, or they would be late for the train. After reading the letter, Apollo was absolutely stunned. It restored Apollo's faith in humanity, who has come to believe there are honest people everywhere.

(2024·广东六校联盟高二上学期联考) It is a bright cold day in April and Paul Blachut is busy as usual. From behind the bar of a restaurant, he has a good view of the river. He can see that, along the shore, many visitors are cooling their feet in the river.
Among those are a mother and her two teenage daughters. They're standing on the edge of the riverbank, playing with an inflatable (充气的) tube when, suddenly, the girls lose their footing and are caught in the river's current. It all happens so fast. The girls desperately grab on to the tube, which their mother is sitting in, dragging her into the river, too. Now all three are being carried away by the fast current.
A bystander races to the restaurant and shouted for help. Despite having no lifesaving training,Blachut rushes to the riverbank, quickly pulling off his Tshirt. Then he jumps into the river. He doesn't care about the cold; all he can think about is saving the women.
As Blachut gets closer to them, he can tell that the mother seems to be in the most trouble; her head is now submerged. He recalls how a lifeguard saves people in a movie so he tries this, but in vain. Without hesitation, Blachut dives under the drowning woman, pushing her upward and using that momentum (冲力) to push her toward the shore. Then he dives into the current again, swims quickly downstream and manages to get hold of one of the teenagers, and get her out in the same way he did her mother. He is out of strength and luckily, the girl's sister is helped out by someone else.
Several onlookers express their admiration for Blachut following the incident, but he is modest about his role. “The whole rescue only took two or three minutes” he says today, adding that he is happy to have received high praise from his boss for his courage. Indeed, it was a job very well done.

The Disneyland parks are full of amusements, but they are also small cities that deal with deliveries, rubbish, and groups of visitors. People need to move from one place to another; they have to refuel and relax. To meet these requirements, the parks are wellequipped in reality. For example, Disneyland Park in California has a reliable transport system. In Walt Disney World in Florida, dustbins are spaced 30 feet apart, and all of them are emptied through underground tubes.
None of this happened by accident. Walt Disney first had his idea for a play land in 1937.He first imagined the park's buildings in a small size.He spent years collecting ideas by visiting other places. He studied Beverly Park in Los Angeles, including rebuilt historic villages. He visited Colonial Williamsburg, where employees dressed up and walked around. Then he organized a team of engineers and designers to plan and build a small world he called Disneyland. Walt Disney had blueprints (蓝图) drawn up, and tried to get the permission to break ground (破土动工).
In 1953, he bought some land in Anaheim. Some designers thought it was too far, but Disney went ahead. It was like building a new city. Pipes had to be fixed. Railway track had to be laid around. Disney chose the hubandspoke (轴辐式的) street pattern that many cities have. “I want Disneyland to be a place where you can't get lost,” he said. Designers and architects also diagrammed the rides and made models, while artists painted the background.
Finally in July 1955, the visitors came. If they picked up maps, they could see the results of years' planning: the shops and restaurants, the square, and the streets. The magic city had finally jumped off the drawing board and come into real life.

(2024·山东临沂高二检测) Morgan Hartman was born with both physical and cognitive (认知的) disabilities. For years though, she lacked a diagnosis (诊断). One thing she did have: a happy spirit. Her dad, Gordon Hartman, never wanted to see that spirit dulled. But unfortunately, at times it was.
“In 2006, we were on a family vacation where I watched Morgan not be able to participate in a pool activity with three other children, and it was simply because of her lack of expression, ” Gordon said. “It almost puts a lump (肿块) in your throat because it gives you a sad feeling that all Morgan wanted was to participate. She just wanted to play.”
After seeing this, Gordon started on a quest to create a space where no one felt left out. His idea: an inclusive theme park. He had experience as a builder and enlisted help from other experts to turn his dream into what is now Morgan's Wonderland. The park, opened in 2010, is believed to be the only one like it in the world and it has expanded to a sports center and camp with an outdoor adventure park. Across all the recreation areas, all are fully accessible to everyone with physical and mental disabilities.
Gordon has seen firsthand how an accessible theme park can change lives through joy. “I met a couple from Mexico City. And they had never had a chance to, because of their special needs, even a chance to play in water together. They heard about it and came here. They cried with me and talked to me about how this was the most wonderful opportunity they ever had, ” he said.
Morgan's Wonderland has welcomed visitors from dozens of countries and all 50 states of the USA—and those with disabilities enter for free. “It's the small things that make the big difference: Having fun,” Gordon said. “Here at Morgan's Wonderland and all the different Morgan's venues, you don't watch. You participate.”

Set 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Ambatondrazaka, the Zahamena National Park's landscape consists of (由……组成) valleys surrounded by a flowing mountain range.
It has an overall land coverage of 64,300 hectares, but only 42,000 hectares is open to the public due to strict conservation (环境保护) reasons. It receives an average yearly rainfall level of about 6 feet and experiences frequent rain showers even during the dry season between April and October.
One really interesting thing about the Zahamena National Park is that the unique territory of its highland has paved the way for the development of several ecosystems that exist at the same time in this park. This is the reason why the types of wildlife living in one area are different in another, which makes it quite exciting to explore.
This protected area is divided into two parts, with a separate piece of land in the middle where many small villages are situated. These villages are inhabited (居住) by the members of the Sihanaka and Betsimisaraka ethnic groups.
The Zahamena National Park gets its name from the local Zahana Mena tree, an uncommon type of hardwood that grows in the lower regions of this protected area. It is characterized by its resilient (坚韧的) wood that can be rather challenging to cut, join, shape and carve even with modern tools.
Established as a strict natural highland reserve in 1927 (and one of the first of its kind in all of Madagascar), the Zahamena National Park was officially given its national park status (地位) in 1997 and was eventually opened to the public. Due to its remarkable territory and unique biodiversity, this national park was later listed as a key part of the collective UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Rainforests of the Atsinanana in 2007.

(2024·山东日照高二检测) Disneyland's opening day, July 17, 1955, was a nightmare. Rides broke down. Restaurants ran out of food and drink. Long lines formed at bathrooms. All in front of a national audience of 90 million, Disney's opening day would be known in Disney history as Black Sunday. But Disneyland's story actually started twenty years earlier with what Walt Disney called “Daddy's Day”.
On Saturdays in the 1930s and 1940s, Disney would take his two daughters to ride the Griffith Park merrygoround. Disney saw the amusement parks they often visited as dirty and unimaginative places run by unfriendly employees. He thought he could do better.
In 1939, he asked two employees to work on a plan for an amusement park. The pair spent six weeks visiting parks around the country and came up with a proposal (提议).
In 1948, Disney laid out his plans for a Mickey Mouse Park, which included a town square, a city hall, a fire station and a movie theater.
By 1952 the idea had grown into a 16acre park proposal that he presented to Burbank, California official. However, the City Council didn't accept the proposal.
Disney counted the refusal as a fortunate setback. By now, his dreams for a theme park had gone far beyond the space available in Burbank. He examined locations throughout Southern California. A 160acre land, 22 miles south of Los Angeles, was soon chosen.
Groundbreaking took place in July 1954, and Disney walked the site daily to offer direction and encouragement.
Disneyland wasn't ready on opening day, but Disney decided to open the gates anyway to the media and invited guests. After the madness of opening day, newspaper headlines wrote: “Walt's Nightmare”. The media foresaw a quick and early end.
However, the public didn't listen. Visitors arrived in droves, and within weeks Disneyland was a success. Within two months, the park had welcomed its millionth visitor. Sixty years later, Disneyland's popularity continues to grow, and shows no signs of slowing down with total overall attendance topping 700 million.

Koalas are famous worldwide for being cute and sleepy. But their numbers are quickly decreasing due to habitat loss and diseases like chlamydia, an illness which is spreading through populations, making koalas very sick. To help, the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and the Dreamworld Wildlife Foundation have come together to breed (培育) super koalas with healthy genes (基因).
Jagger, the first koala bred in the Living Koala Genome Bank pilot project, spent his first two years at Dreamworld's koala breeding centre before being released (释放) to live in a koala group in Elanora Conservation park on the Gold Coast. “Jagger is fully vaccinated (接种疫苗) against chlamydia, is diseasefree and, thanks to his diverse genetics, will help protect koalas in this population,” said Associate Professor Stephen Johnston.
Dr Johnston said the super koalas were bred to have “high genetic value”. This means they have not only healthy, diseasefree genes but also a variety of genes, which is critical for a species' adaptation to changing environments. By releasing the speciallybred super koalas into the wild, it is hoped they will mate with other koalas and improve the population's genetic diversity and resistance to disease.
Dr Johnston said he hoped the project could be expanded into other wildlife parks to help “protect the future of koalas”.
The government announced in February that it planned to list koalas as endangered in New South Wales, Queensland after populations were ravaged by various factors in the past years.
Dreamworld Head of Life Sciences Michele Barnes said the project came at a critical time for koalas. “Koala populations have seen a rapid decrease—in the order of 80 per cent—in the past 25 years,” Ms Barnes said. “With most east coast koalas now listed as endangered, so much more needs to be done in this space to protect them from dying out.”
