A 体裁:记叙文 主题语境:文化交流 难度:★★★☆☆
(2024·广东广州三校高二上学期期末) When it came time for me to look at options for postgraduate study, I decided to go abroad, initially looking at options in both Australia and the United States.
I decided on Australia finally after I spoke with friends, who had experience of studying at the University of Melbourne and living in the city. The people I knew described to me as a place where there were lots of people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, and where everyone was openminded and there were discussions happening everywhere. I'm happy to say that ended up being my experience as well.
I joined Lion, one of Australasia's largest food and drink companies, as part of their graduate program, which was a fantastic opportunity, because it gave me the opportunity to work in a variety of roles, and gain experience across a variety of functions. But the thing with Lion was that they were already a very established business; they already had their processes and structures in place.
When the opportunity came for me to join Culture Amp, I realized it was an opportunity to see a business grow and be part of that evolution. It was just what I wanted. That comes with its own challenges, as new problems appear you might be solving them from the very beginning, rather than having a framework to fall back on, but it also means there's room to learn and experiment. It made me realize where my interests lie. Here in Australia, there's a really high tolerance for change in your careers. I think it's really easy for graduates to feel like they have to “jump” into a role, and then that's it, forever. But the truth is, your career is a marathon. You can expect to change courses along the way, and allow your interests to open new doors.

(2024·四川雅安高二检测) It is presently a harvest season for Christian Nacht Wey, who operates an apple farm, or orchard, in the western German town of Gelsdorf. Besides apples, Nacht Wey's farm also produces a second harvest: electricity. Many of the farm's trees grow under solar panels(太阳能电池板)that have been producing power during this year's unusually sunny summer. Putting solar equipment on the same land as crops is becoming increasingly popular in Europe and North America. Farmers are finding that this method can make the most of their land, while creating a second way to earn money.
But getting the right mix of crop and solar is difficult. Most fruit requires specific growing conditions. Even small changes in the environment can harm crops and cause money losses. Even if the fruit survives, it might turn the wrong color or be less sweet and may be difficult to sell.
For these reasons, Nacht Wey is working with researchers to test which kinds of apples do well under a solar cover. For testing purposes, Nacht Wey covered some of his trees with a traditional netting material. It is normally used to protect sensitive crops from serious weather events.
Juergen Zimmer is an expert with the area's agricultural services department. He told the AP that apples grown under the solar covers were a little less sweet this year than those under the nets. But almost no solarshaded apples got damaged in the strong sunlight that hit the area on July 24.In the nonshaded group, about 18 percent of apples suffered sun damage that day, Zimmer said. Researchers hope the tests will show that fruit crops perform well under solar panels. This could help prevent renewable energy production from competing for valuable agricultural land. That competition has become an increasing question as the need for renewable energy increases to fight climate change and rising food prices.

National parks are an excellent way to explore all the beauty that the world has to offer: whether it's endangered species, erupting volcanoes and snowy mountains, or rainforests and lakes. Of the thousands of national parks that exist in the world, these are the ones that should be on everyone's bucket list.
Yorkshire Dales, United Kingdom
Contrary (相反) to the popular link of national parks with the wilderness, it is filled with winding valleys, hills and villages where over 24,000 people live and work. Visitors can walk through grassland, visit waterfalls or explore underground caves, but Yorkshire Dales is also home to several food shops, and the park hosts cheese festivals and farmers markets regularly, so it's best to go hungry.
Kakadu National Park, Australia
It is a delight for those who like a bit of history mixed with the biodiversity of national parks. While it houses thousands of species of wildlife, there's more to the national park than that.
Guilin and Lijiang River National Park, China
It is surrounded by striking natural beauty and can be explored by land. But the river national park, as the name suggests, is best explored through leisurely boat rides that take visitors through many ancient towns that come along the way of the river.
Vatnaj kull National Park, Iceland
Here's a surprising fact: The whole of Vatnaj kull National Park makes up 14% of Iceland's territory! The park is usually open for hikes around the glaciers; boat rides through glacier lakes, and tours that take visitors through the park's many ice caves, waterfalls, and icebergs. Vatnaj kull is also where two of Iceland's most active volcanoes are located.

When I first set foot in Western Australia's Pilbara, a landscape holding 3.5billionyearold clues to the beginning of life, I was very disappointed. The year was 1994.I drove excitedly out of the west coast town of Port Hedland, but all I saw for the first 150 kilometers were a few dead trees and smoky dust across the burnt, flat plain. And the heat!! I'd never experienced anything this terrible before. Or breathed air so thick with biting flies.
But as we continued to head south on the highway to Marble Bar—the hottest town in Australia—some low, broad hills started to rise from the horizon. As we continued down a dirt track into the hills, the burnt plains gave way to grasscovered hills. This grass is called spinifex, an amazing but cruel creation. It grows as bushes up to one meter in diameter (直径), with round, fine leaves with needlesharp tips. The tips will go through just about any piece of cloth. My guide wore thick gaiters (护腿) to protect his legs. But he had failed to inform me of the risk. Without any gaiters, my skin was covered with needle tips that remained in my legs for months.
The land, ultimately, proved worth the discomfort. Here I was walking over some of Earth's oldest, bestpreserved rocks that contain evidence of life from almost the very beginnings of time on our planet.
This area had changed much from when it was first formed 3.5 billion years ago. Back then it would have been a black volcanic land, with no color from vegetation. Over the hills I might have seen a green, ironrich sea under an orange sky heavy with carbon dioxide and without oxygen. Several billion years after that, the world would turn cold and become covered in a global ice sheet, destroying almost every living thing. When it melted away, oxygen levels rose again. Life really got going. Animals slowly occupied the land, so did new types of plants. The greening of our planet began, and a wide variety of organisms (有机体) appeared including, unfortunately for me, spinifex.

Climate change and beer might be two things that rarely appear in the same sentence. But according to an article in the scientific journal Nature Plants, if the Earth gets warmer, your Fridaynight drink might get pricier.
The team behind the article modelled the effect of extreme events on production of barley, the main ingredient of beer.“Extreme weather conditions such as drought or heat will impact barley production. Barley is irreplaceable in beer making,” said Xie Wei, first author of the article. “If barley production drops, beer production will also drop, and beer might get more expensive.” When global temperatures rise to their highest, global beer supply will drop 16 percent. Prices will also hike due to a drop of supply. For instance, a 4.84U.S.dollar price hike for a 500 ml bottle is projected in Ireland, almost doubling the previous price. Quality of that beer might also be affected. If barley cannot receive enough irrigation, quality of the protein and carbohydrate in its grain will drop.
In fact, the effect of drought on beer production has been seen. Bloomberg reported that drought and heat caused a 30 to 40 percent drop in barley production in European barley producing regions during summer 2018, leading to a 35 percent price hike of barley in France.
However, regional fluctuations (波动) in barley production are still manageable now. If production in one region falls, beer makers can make it up by importing more from other regions. But if climate change gets out of control, the impact will be global. Agriculture is incredibly vulnerable to climate change.
Xie pointed out the impact of climate change is not only limited to staple crops. “We are only using barley and beer as an example of highaddedvalue agricultural products,” said Xie. “In countries like China, per person consumption of staple crops is dropping, but that of products such as dairy and beer is rising.”
Beer, not essential for human survival, occupies a major part in culture around the world. That gives people yet one more reason to care more about climate change.

Humanity's impact on the environment is often framed in the context of the postindustrial era but new research shows how intensive land use by a medieval East African population changed their natural habitat forever.
Unguja Ukuu, a historic settlement located on Zanzibar Island, in Zanzibar, Tanzania, was a key port of trade in the Indian Ocean by the first millennium (一千年) AD when the island was populated by farming societies establishing trade links with the Indian Ocean, China and beyond.
“The islands of Zanzibar witnessed numerous environmental and cultural changes as the region became a center of maritime trade, crosscultural interaction, and global exchange,” says the study's lead author Dr. Ania KotarbaMorley.
These changes resulted in the dumping of food remains, general waste and increased agricultural activity and land use, all of which negatively impacted sediment (沉淀物) buildup along the island. “Our study outlines clearly how human disturbance in a natural environment impacted coastal landforms and sediments on a remote East African island already over 1,000 years ago and directly changed the fortunes of the coastal inhabitants in the area as a result,” says Dr. Ania.
The researchers applied a variety of standards and new techniques to find new patterns which improve our understanding of the changes in the makeup of the sediment along the coastline of local creeks (小海湾) and the bay on the island, directly impacted by human activity.
To help understand how and why these ancient ports thrived (繁荣) or declined, it is important to know how the coastal landscape influenced the way traders undertook their commercial activities, or drove decisions, including mooring (停泊) locations and investments of labour and capital by local communities and any central authorities.
The researchers say these processes might be responsible for the decline, and eventual abandonment of Unguja Ukuu at the turn of the second millennium AD—a period of regional sociopolitical and economic transformation of coastal African societies that marked the appearance of maritime Swahili culture.

In order to release the pressure resulting from our study, I went to Xingxing Farm to pick some oranges together with my classmates last weekend.
Hardly had we arrived at the farm when we saw many oranges hanging on the branches. A farmer told us how to pick oranges. Then each of us carried a basket and a pair of scissors, quickly climbed up the ladder and started to pick oranges. Bathed in sunshine, we sang and laughed while picking oranges. After we paid for the oranges we picked, we prepared to go back to school.
What a wonderful time we had! Not only did it give us relaxation, but also it got us closer to nature.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After an accident in January, 8yearold Thomas was badly injured. His dream of winning this year's interschool football championship was destroyed overnight.
“It would be at least a year and a half before your son walks again unless there is a miracle,” doctors told Thomas' single mother, Beth. After knowing this fact one night, Thomas cried sadly on the hospital bed. Beth tried to encourage him. During it, she fished inside her pocket and pulled out the inhaler (吸入器) when suddenly feeling dizzy—Beth had asthma (哮喘), and the inhaler could help her breathe more easily.
In September, after staying in hospital for months, Thomas returned home and had to completely rely on a wheelchair to move around, feeling hopeless. Beth tried to cheer him up.
One afternoon, the mother was near the door reading for Thomas, while the boy was relaxing on the sofa in the living room, listening. Suddenly, Thomas heard a strange loud sound coming from the porch (走廊).
“It's just... my book fell!” Beth said. But Thomas could tell she was struggling to breathe. It seemed that something was stuck in her throat.
Normally, Thomas' wheelchair would be right by the sofa, and he could easily roll towards his mother. But earlier that afternoon, while Thomas was asleep, Beth pushed the wheelchair into the yard to let it get some sunshine.
Beth tried to get up for her inhaler put on a shelf inside the room, but she lost her balance and fell onto the floor. When Beth wasn't able to respond to Thomas' calling out her name, Thomas realized this was an emergency.
He hurried to take out the phone from his pocket and quickly informed the police of what was happening. Although help was on the way, Thomas knew he couldn't just sit and wait.
He looked at his mother's inhaler. It could help save her life, but it was on that shelf seven meters away from him. “I must go there to get it,” he said to himself. Despite knowing his legs probably wouldn't listen to him, he was determined.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
He held the couch's seat as tightly as he could, using his weak hands.

He held the couch's seat as tightly as he could, using his weak hands. He knew he had to try, no matter how hard it was. The thought that he would never see his mother was too much for him. He slowly lifted himself up and fell down but he didn't give up. He was determined to reach the inhaler. After lying on the ground for a second, he gathered all his strength and surprisingly, he was on his feet!
After amazingly standing up, Thomas began struggling to walk to that inhaler. It was difficult but Thomas finally made it to the shelf. He grabbed the inhaler and made his way to his mother. With trembling hands, he put the inhaler in her mouth and dialed for the doctors who arrived just in time to take Beth to the hospital. As he sat in the empty living room, Thomas realized that he had truly become a hero. He had proven that even the weakest of us can be strong when it matters the most.

(2024·江西九江一中高二月考) Recently, the topic “Chinese people can eat such a sweet melon but can't do without this grandma” has topped the hot search list. The grandma is 94yearold Wu Mingzhu, called the “queen of melons”, a melongrowing expert and academician. Among Wu Mingzhu's classmates was Yuan Longping, who later became the “father of hybrid rice”.
Wu Mingzhu was born in 1930 into a scholarly family in Wuhan city. After her graduation in 1953, she was assigned to work in Beijing. But Wu had already set her eyes on her longawaited goal. “What I studied was the science of fruit and vegetables. I wanted to work in the fields not in an office,” said Wu.
In 1955, Wu voluntarily went to work in Shanshan County, Turpan Basin, where working conditions were quite hard. She found that the Hami melon, a rare specialty fruit which was once common in the area, was in danger of becoming extinct if not properly cultivated (种植).Wu spent years visiting over 300 production teams, picking out 44 melon varieties. She overcame a variety of difficulties to produce particularly delicious melons in a scientific way, winning over the local farmers accustomed (习惯的) to folk cultivation methods. Then the promotion area covered most of Xinjiang's main commodity areas, and a group of melonrich villages appeared.
For more than 60 years, Wu Mingzhu and her team has cultivated more than 30 varieties, brought the sweetness of melons to people, and promoted the melon series with Chinese characteristics and a complete breeding innovation system to the world. When first hearing her nickname of “a pearl in the Turpan Basin”, Wu said, “In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I'm just one of the ordinary ones.”

(2024·重庆高二检测) An environmental group in Colombia is leading a project to save wild areas in the San Lucas Mountains with the help of coffee growers.
Since 2016, San Lucas areas have been threatened by mining and coca (古柯) planting. Gold miners and coca growers make more money than coffee farmers. Now the group WebConserva helps link coffee farmers with coffee processors (加工者) from around the country in order that they can earn more. At the same time coffee farms can serve as borders around the forests to protect the biodiversity within.
To date, the project includes 10 families who farm 400 hectares of coffee plants. WebConserva said it hopes, in time, 200 families will be included. At that level, 20,000 hectares of untouched forest could be protected. The families promise not to cut down trees to expand their crops or to hunt wild animals. In return, they receive $300 for 125 kilograms of coffee.
Arcadio Barajas is among those taking part. His coffee farm sets up a barrier between cattle farms and forests where wild animals live, thus reducing the possibility of conflict between cattle farmers and wild animals.“Cutting down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against my faith, and now I feel that growing coffee lets me be a good guard of the land,” he said.
Arnobis Romero is a former coca grower and miner.“Many families depended on illegal activities to support their children years ago. Now, we feel it a duty to look after this biodiversity and leave it for future generations,” he said. Activists want San Lucas to be protected as a national park, but the process has been slow. Carlos Valderrama, director of WebConserva, hopes the project can build production system that will last far into the future.“ It protects forests, biodiversity and ecosystems at the same time as improving coffee growers' quality of life,” he said.

Drew Peterson came back to his family's farm near Salem, South Dakota, in 2010 from a job in New York. Since his return, he says he has experienced many uncertainties, but luckily he was introduced to the First Dakota National Bank's AgriVisions Emerging Farmer and Rancher Program. “It was a good way of trying to mentally prepare for black swan events (the unexpected problems). They told us this is going to happen. It's not an if; it's a when,” he says. “They tried to give us some tools and just give us some general train of thought on how to get through them.”
That has been the program's intent since its origin, says Nathan Franzén, president of First Dakota's AgriBusiness Division.Held every other year, the program is divided into four parts, with each being a multiday event.
The first session (会议) is held in early spring in Mitchell,South Dakota, where the group explores farm management and financials. The second session is held at the South Dakota State University in Brookings, covering marketing and risk management.
In the first two sessions, students have contact with nationally known speakers, such as Jolene Brown, who comes in and talks about transition. After hearing Brown's presentation, students in the first class returned to the farm full of energy and excitement, Franzén says, but “Mom and Dad at home, or Grandma and Grandpa, weren't always ready for that conversation.” A“social” is now held allowing students to bring family members for Brown's presentation. “That way they all get to hear it at the same time. They all get to understand the message,” he says.
The third part of the program involves participants (参与者) taking a trip, which has included a variety of stops over the years. “The curriculum and the content has a ton of value, but the networking has just as much value,” Franzén says. Peterson agrees with that, saying he has kept in contact with fellow (同伴) participants from that first class.
The fourth session of the program focuses on strategic planning.“We walk them through what a good plan should look like,” Franzén says.

(2024·广东六校联盟高二上12月联考) “With the passing of Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, China and the world have lost one of the greatest agricultural scientists,” Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize Foundation, said. Quinn, also vice chairman of the Yuan Longping International Rice Development Forum, shared his memory of the “father of hybrid rice” in an interview with Xinhua on Sunday.
Quinn first met Yuan in October 2004, when Yuan traveled to Des Moines in the U.S. state of Iowa to receive the World Food Prize. As they walked out of the airport , Quinn received a call and stepped aside to speak. When he turned back a minute or two later, he lost Yuan. “I had never before ‘lost’ a laureate (获奖者),” he said. After a desperate search, he found Professor Yuan surrounded by a group of smiling graduate students from Iowa State University who so admired him that they wanted to take him off for a meal and conversation.
Quinn admired Yuan as a teacher. “He always had time to answer questions and speak with young scientists and students. The American high school students we sent to his research center each year always returned filled with knowledge and a deep desire to learn more.”
In Quinn's eyes, Yuan was incredibly humble, never seeking fame, and focused only on hard work and results that could help lift people out of poverty. With a down__to__earth attitude, Yuan greatly reduced hunger and provided farmers with surplus income through his discovery of hybrid rice.
Learning of Yuan's passing away on Saturday, Quinn issued a statement to send his deepest sympathy to Yuan's family and colleagues in China, as well as his admirers across the world. “Professor Yuan Longping, who was truly beloved in his country and by all of us who knew him, will be greatly missed. His legacy will provide inspiration to generations far into the future, in China and across the world,” Quinn said in the statement.
