In early 2021, I hit a rut in my studies. As a doctoral candidate at the University of Chicago in Illinois, I worked to design safer, more effective materials for vaccine delivery. Although I had been productive early in my graduate career, my long hours and hard work were no longer translating into success in the laboratory, and I felt hopeless about achieving my goals. Something had to change.
As I began to search for the cause of my struggles, I became increasingly aware that my quiet time at the lab bench — for instance, when I was running columns or experiments — was anything but. Instead of thinking about science, I was watching television or interacting with social media on my smartphone. Although I could cover up this inefficiency with longer hours, my work felt chaotic and disorganized. I would come home from a long day in the lab and respond to e-mails or messages over dinner or in bed. This all came to a head last summer, when my inability to balance work and life ed me to seek help from the university’s student mental health services.
Through a combination of consultation (咨询) and personal reflection, I came to understand my problem. To regain my focus, I chose to reduce my connectivity by using a basic mobile phone without an Internet connection during work hours and removing unnecessary apps from my smartphone when I did use it.
Underestimating the addictive nature of smartphones, I experienced symptoms of withdrawal when I first did this. With time, however, I began to make practical use of my quiet time. I started reading papers during long experiments, and developed a habit of writing in my down time.
Perhaps most importantly, I have felt my anxiety decrease and my productivity and creativity improve dramatically, trading my chaotic work-life relationship for one with clearer boundaries and plenty of new scientific ideas. Now, even when I do carry my smartphone, I feel less forced to check e-mails or messages, and can concentrate more closely on whatever task is at hand.
4. What main problem did the author face in early 2021
A. Working long hours alone. B. Getting stuck in his studies.
C. Losing interest in research. D. Feeling anxious about messages.
5. What made the author struggle
A. His addiction to the phone. B. Running columns or experiments.
C. Messy and disorganized schedule. D. His inability to get mental-health services.
6 What did the author do after he realized the problem
A. He wisely spent his spare time. B. He merely used a basic mobile phone.
C. He frequently reflected on past mistakes. D. He never checked e-mail s or messages.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Challenges in the Lab B. Disconnect to Reconnect
C. The Struggles of a Student D. How Phones Affect Research
C
A recent survey found children would rather be online influencers (网红) than astronauts. It made headlines and led to plenty of complaints about “kids these days” is influencing a promising career path The lifestyles we see advertised on social media are enticing, but under the shining appearance lie uncertain income, pay inequality, disability and mental health issues.
Successful influencers will be the first to claim that anyone can make it in the industry. However, social media economy experts uncovered a huge income gap between successful influencers and everyone else. For most people trying to become an influencer, their passion projects of content creation often become free work for brands.
Most influencers are self-employed, often experiencing inconsistent income and a lack of protection that comes with long-term employment. The risks of self-employment are increased in the influencer industry by absence of industry standards and little pay transparency (透明度) . Influencers are often forced to assess their own value and determine fees for their work. As a result, content creators often undervalue their own creative labour, and many end up working for free.
Influencers are also often at the mercy of algorithms — the behind-the-scenes computer programs that determine which posts are shown, in which order, to users. Platforms share little detail about their algorithms, yet they finally determine who and what gains visibility and influence on social media. The threat of invisibility is a constant source of insecurity for influencers, who are under constant pressure to feed platforms with content. If they don’t, they may be “punished” by the algorithm — having posts hidden or displayed lower down on search results.
Constant online presence leads to one of the most common issues in the influencer industry: mental health concerns. Influencers can connect to their platform workspaces and audience at any time of day or night, which can lead to them overworking. Coupled with the fear of online criticism, it contributes to mental and physical health issues.
Although becoming an influencer may look attractive to more and more people, the industry’s dark underside needs to be made visible and improved through enhanced employment regulation and industry-led cultural change.
8. Which of the following words can replace “enticing” in paragraph 1
A. Imaginative B. Similar. C. appealing. D. Fashionable.
9. What’s one of the reasons for influencers’ undervaluing their creative work
A. Invisibility of payment. B. Instability of income.
C. Pressure of assessment. D. Risks of self-employment.
10. What may cause the influencers’ stress according to paragraph 4
A. Having to work out the order of posts to be displayed.
B. Being punished by platform staff for personal reasons.
C. Being threatened to create new content without being paid.
D. Having little control and knowledge of the platform algorithms.
11. Why does the author write this text
A. To stress the importance of visibility in the online world.
B. To reveal relationships between platforms and influencers.
C. To explain the reasons behind children’s career preferences.
D. To show the dark side of working as an online content creator.

Picture a robot. What do you see A metal machine built to last forever Unfortunately, this very quality now threatens to drown the planet in extremely durable (持久的) e-waste. What if, instead, those machines were designed to break down and disappear — like life does In a new study, researchers crafted a robotic arm, and a controller to operate it, from pork gelatin and plant cellulose — materials strong enough to function yet delicate enough to degrade (降解) in the soil. After testing, both structures broke down in soil within weeks.
Biodegradable robotics often falls under the umbrella of soft robotics. The field originated from materials science and chemistry rather than conventional robots that come from mechanical engineering. But a lot of early soft robots still relied on chemical materials that continue to exist as pollution.
Pingdong Wei, a materials scientist at Westlake University in Hangzhou, teamed up with his friend Zhuang Zhang, a robotics engineer now at Fudan University in Shanghai, to assemble (组装) robots for the study. They started with cellulose layers from cotton, then added glycerol for flexibility and dried the layers for strength. “Cellulose is also cheap and easy to assemble,” Wei says. To build sensors, the researchers used a conductive gelatin from pork. They then folded the layers and sensors into 3D structures.
Wei and Zhang found the controller and robotic arm stood up to both heavy use and a week of inactivity. Finally, they buried them both in a 20-centimeter-deep hole near their campus. Within eight weeks the machines were almost entirely gone.
Wei and Zhang envision robots that can handle dangerous waste and then disappear. They also propose robots that aid surgeries and then safely break down inside the body. But it’s important to note that the technology is in very early stages.
“If we truly want to have a sustainable robot that goes outside in nature,” a materials scientist Florian Hartmann says, “we also need to think of electronics or power supplies, or even batteries, that are biodegradable.”
12. What do we know about early soft robots
A. They are made of natural materials. B. They are too delicate for heavy use.
C. They will produce e-waste pollution. D. They come from mechanical engineering.
13. Why did Wei and Zhang bury the controller and robotic arm
A. To see if they can work in soil B. To check if they can stay inactive.
C. To test if they can break down. D. To assess if they can handle waste.
14. Which of the following best describes the robots in the new study
A. Safe to operate. B. Easy to degrade.
C. Costly to produce. D. Complex to assemble.
15. What does Hartmann mainly talk about in the last paragraph
A. The necessity for sustainable robots. B. The potential applications of soft robots.
C. The possibility of improving power supplies. D. The suggestions for future soft robot research.
