With its rolling hills, dramatic waterfalls, and rich woodlands, the Durham Dales in England provides a natural habitat for birds — and it’s also home to zoologist and artist Sara Cox. Surrounded by nature since childhood, she has always been passionate about birds. Today, she creates detailed bird sculptures made from fine metal wire, combining scientific knowledge with artistic creativity to raise awareness about the challenges facing bird populations and to inspire people to care for them.
As a child, Sara spent much of her time outdoors with her brothers — exploring the garden or walking in the countryside. These early experiences helped her develop a deep appreciation for the natural world. At the same time, creativity was a strong presence in her home; her father, an engineer, enjoyed welding (焊接) and building, while her mother made pottery in her spare time. Their hands-on skills and artistic sensibility gave Sara both technical and creative foundations. Later, when she moved to Mickleton 20 years ago, the surrounding wildlife became a powerful source of inspiration. Observing birds up close in their natural habitat helped her find her own artistic voice and connect her love of nature with sculpture.
Sara’s wire bird sculptures are the result of careful observation and detailed study. She will sit outside for hours, sketching and observing their movements — right down to how their muscles work and how they shift their weight. She also visits museums to study bird skeletons (骨架) so she can understand the structure beneath the feathers. “To sculpt a bird accurately, I need to know what’s underneath,” she explains.
Her sculptures have been shown in national exhibitions, including one held by the Royal Society of British Artists in London. They can also be seen along nature trails (小径), such as at the Durham Wildlife Trust’s Low Barns reserve. Whether displayed in galleries or out in the wild, her work has been praised by museums, galleries, and wildlife trusts alike for its scientific accuracy, emotional impact, and ability to encourage greater appreciation for bird species.
24. What can we know about Sara Cox’s sculptures
A. They are mainly made for commercial purposes.
B They aim to make people pay attention to bird protection.
C. They are not scientific and creative.
D. They are based on her childhood paintings of birds.
25. What does the underlined phrase “artistic voice” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. a way of expressing artistic ideas uniquely B. a sound made by birds in their natural habitat
C. a skill of communicating with other artists D. a method of teaching artistic creation
26. What can we infer about Sara Cox from the fact that she “sits outside for hours, sketching and observing birds’ movements”
A. She is energetic and outgoing. B. She is patient and precise.
C. She is independent and adventurous. D. She is curious and brave.
27. What is the best title for the passage
A. A Talented Artist: Sara Cox and Her Wire Sculptures
B. Nature’s Inspiration: The Story of a Bird Lover
C. Merging Art and Science: Sara Cox’s Mission to Protect Birds
D. The Impact of Sara Cox’s Sculptures on Wildlife Conservation

A pilot program in North County is teaching students about nutrition and where their food comes from. The five-week Farm to School program is a partnership between Escondido Union School District and the Farm to Institution Center. It encourages elementary school children to try vegetables they may not have tried before.
“I think that understanding just the roots of where our food comes from and how it gets to our table is meaningful,” said Jeremy Lyche, principal of Bernardo Elementary School. “You saw the kids’ excitement today. They love it.”
The students in Paul Erickson’s class have been in the program for over a month. “We’ve been doing multiple lessons where we’re learning about and teaching about local farms in our community, as well as some healthier choices like produce, just getting students engaged in farming,” Erickson said.
Once a week for the past five weeks, Alexis Anderson from the Farm to Institution Center has been coming by to teach these kids more about farming and what it takes to get fresh produce to their tables. Wednesday was the students’ last session in the program. She said the main takeaway for the kids is learning where their food comes from.
“And eating locally and supporting local because it not only benefits their community economically, but also benefits their health and just education overall of knowing what’s available,” Anderson said.
After Wednesday’s lesson, the students went to the school garden for a game of bingo to identify the things they’ve learned. One of the goals of the school garden is for the students to try new things. For Escondido Union School District, the ultimate goal for the school garden is for the produce to end up in the cafeteria for the children to eat. But there are some health regulations the district still needs to overcome before that can happen.
28. What does the Farm to School program aim to achieve
A. To provide financial support for school gardens. B. To educate students about food origins.
C. To market local farms and their produce. D. To cultivate students’ love for gardening.
29. What is the author’s attitude towards the Farm to School program described in the passage
A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
30. Which is one advantage of eating locally according to Anderson
A. It contributes to the local economy. B. It results in a decrease in food waste.
C. It helps farmers develop better techniques. D. It cuts the cost of producing food.
31. What measures should the school district take to accomplish their goal
A. Grow a wider range of vegetables.
B. Enlarge the garden to boost food output.
C. Provide training for additional teachers to get involved.
D. Confirm that all produce is up to health regulations.
D
Why would a weather scientist concern herself with the rocks beneath her feet For good reason, if she lives in Iceland. That island nation sits on a boundary between two of Earth’s crustal (地壳的) plates which are pulling apart. That allows hot, liquid rock called magma (岩浆) to well up from the depths. Iceland also sits just below the Arctic circle and enjoys glacier (冰川)-promoting temperatures. As a consequence of these facts, it is home to 34 active volcanoes, half of which are buried under ice up to 1 km thick. And that ice is melting as the climate warms.
Some predict the glaciers will disappear in two centuries, which could upset the volcanoes below, causing them to erupt more frequently, more violently or both. Michelle Parks, a volcano monitoring expert, is therefore leading a three-year project that will try to determine whether, in future, less ice could mean more fire.
Glaciers bear down upon Earth’s crust, laying pressure on the underlying rock and raising its melting point. However, when the ice is removed and the rock bounces back, pressure will be eased and melting point will drop, thus enhancing the formation of magma. Early data collected by Dr Parks suggest two or three times more magma is being produced beneath Iceland than a century ago.
How that plays out will depend on how the magma beneath individual volcanoes are reshaped by the bouncing back land. Some may erupt more frequently; others, less so but more violently. This may be happening already. For example, Grimsvotn and Bardarbunga, two volcanoes in central Iceland, have been more active than normal in recent decades. By contrast, Katla, once erupted every 50 years or so but has been quiet for over a century.
History certainly supports the idea that melting ice stimulates magma production. There were 30 to50 times more volcanic eruptions after the ice melted some 10,000 years ago. Admittedly, there was a lot more ice then than the bits-and-pieces now remaining. But the link seems clear.
32. What is the consequence of the disappearance of glaciers
A. Warmer climate. B. Rising melting point of rocks.
C. Multiplied magma. D. Less violent volcanic eruptions.
33. What do the examples in Paragraph 4 illustrate
A. Volcanoes’ reaction to melting ice varies. B. Most volcanoes will erupt more frequently.
C. Volcanoes in Iceland cause severe destruction. D. Freezing temperature will cool volcanoes down.
34. What does the underlined word “link” mean in the last Paragraph
A. The link between less ice and more fire.
B. The link between melting ice and warm climate.
C. The link between higher pressure and lower melting point.
D. The link between crustal movement and volcanic eruption.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Volcano: The Power of Nature B. Glacier: Ancient existence on earth
C. Melting Ice May Have Volcanic Consequences D. Disappearing Glaciers Signal a Warning to Humans
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下列短文,从短文后选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项
In an era dominated by short videos, social media feeds and instant messages, deep reading — the immersive, focused engagement with a complex text — seems to be fading. ____36____ This shift not only affects how we absorb information but also shapes our ability to think critically and empathetically.
What exactly makes deep reading different from superficial scanning ____37____ When we read deeply, we don’t just recognize words; we connect ideas, analyze arguments, and construct mental models of the author’s thoughts. This process requires sustained attention, which is increasingly hard to come by in a world filled with notifications.
The consequences of losing this skill extend beyond personal learning. ____38____ For instance, a 2023 study by Stanford University found that frequent shallow readers struggled more with understanding nuanced ethical debates compared to those who practiced deep reading. They were also less likely to consider alternative perspectives before forming opinions.
____39____ Carving out dedicated “reading time” free from digital distractions is a good start. Turning off phone notifications, choosing physical books over e-readers (which often have linked content), and engaging in “active reading” — taking notes, highlighting key points, and pausing to reflect — can all rebuild this muscle.
Critics argue that digital media has simply replaced one form of reading with another, but this misses the point. ____40____ Deep reading is not just a way to gain knowledge; it’s a practice that trains our brains to be more thoughtful, patient, and open-minded — qualities more essential than ever in a divided world.
A. Deep reading requires a quiet environment.
B. Digital platforms are designed to encourage rapid consumption.
C. It’s not that we read less, but that we read in a way that prioritizes speed over depth.
D. The good news is that deep reading is a skill that can be redeveloped with intentional effort.
E. Society as a whole suffers when members lose the ability to engage deeply with complex ideas.
F. Unlike scanning, which aims to extract quick facts, deep reading is about comprehension and reflection.
G. This decline is often attributed to the constant interruptions of digital devices and the culture of immediacy they foster.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I love to play the piano and enjoy performing my music, so when the annual winter recital (演奏会) was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs. My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You and your sister should perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living, ”my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the elderly there would really appreciate the music and you could each play more than just two songs. ”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the seniors with some lively tunes. My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for us to perform during the Sunday dinner hour in two weeks. I worked hard to polish up fifteen pieces, including many old classics. My sister and I decided to take turns playing throughout the hour.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, we entered the spacious dining room where a shiny black electric grand piano stood waiting. The room was filled with elderly residents enjoying dinner, yet despite the conversations, isolation hung in the air.
We were immediately greeted by Phyllis, an old woman in charge of Carriage House. When I told her we had come to play the piano, she seemed quite pleased flashing us a bright smile. Phyllis announced to the room, “These two girls have come to sing and let’s welcome them”. As she handed me the microphone, there was scattered applause. “Hi, my name is Baylie,” I said with a smile. “Hi, I’m Chloe,” my sister said shyly. “We have come here to entertain you with some piano songs. We hope you enjoy our performance,” I enthusiastically announced.

Our club will host regular activities, such as poetry recitation competitions and discussions on historical figures from the game. This will provide a practical platform to enhance our understanding of traditional culture beyond textbooks.
We believe the club will significantly enrich our campus life and boost cultural confidence among students. We sincerely hope you can approve our application.

第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】A possible version:
I sat down on the hard bench and turned to my first song. My initial nervousness was quickly replaced by excitement as I began playing my songs. I found myself truly enjoying the performance, and so did my sister. The dinner hour flew by smoothly. Some of the elderly swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped their toes or snapped their fingers. I was amazed how the melodies brought such joy to their faces. What began as a standard dinner hour extended to ninety minutes. As it concluded, I gathered my music and joined my sister at the front and curtsied as the crowd wholeheartedly applauded.
After performing, I noticed Phyllis wiping tears from her eyes. She slowly approached us and told us many of the elderly there do not have families that visit them often, and tragically some do not even have families at all. Our performance really made their day and eased their loneliness. It struck me that no matter how young we are, we still have the power to make a difference in the world and spread kindness to those desperately in need of it. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, because it led to us sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.
