headphones
Headphones are helpful. We use them to listen to music without disturbing (打扰) others. Many kids use them in school. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量) is too loud. Studies show that one out of every 10 kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud noise.
microscope
How hearing works
There are cells (细胞) inside the ear that help you hear. They can only be seen with a microscope. “We call them hair cells,” Jackie Clark said. “They look like hairs standing up.” Clark is a professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. She studies how loud noise affects our ears.
Sound is invisible (看不见的). But it moves in waves. It makes the hair cells move back and forth. Think of the wind in the leaves.
Loud noises can damage (损害,伤害) these cells. The cells scrape (刮擦,擦碰) against the ear. This makes them twist (弯曲,变形). And once the cells are damaged, they don’t grow back.
Protect your ears One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus (耳鸣). It’s a ringing in the ears. “It’s like someone is playing a note on the flute for a long time,” Clark says. “There’ s no getting rid of it.” And the damage affects more than your ears. It can cause anxiety and stress. How can you protect your ears Keep the volume on your headphones low. You should be able to hear sounds around you. And other people shouldn’t hear noise from your headphones. “If I can hear what you’ re listening to when you’ re wearing your headphones,” Clark says, “it’s too loud.”
Sounds are measured in units called decibels (分贝). Raindrops are 30 decibels. Fireworks are 140 decibels. What about your headphones Listening devices can go higher than 100 decibels. That’s too loud. To protect your ears, keep your device at about half volume. And don’t listen too long. About an hour a day is safe.

My grandfather often said “I won’t” to show his dislike of dishonesty (不诚实).
When he was young, he worked as a furniture maker. One day, a neighbour invited him to make some furniture. When arriving, he noticed the wood provided was a little wet, so he said, “I won’t start right away.” He chose to let the wood dry for a month. He knew working with wet wood could cause problems later on.
Around the same time, another furniture maker was also asked for a similar (类似的) job by a different family. Unlike my grandfather, he began working right away. As a result, the neighbour started doubting (怀疑) my grandfather, thinking he was trying to make more money by putting off the work. However, my grandfather waited patiently. He wanted the best quality (质量) for the furniture he was making.
A month later, the other furniture maker received his money and went back home. My grandfather began to make strong and beautiful furniture when the wood was completely dry. A few months passed and the furniture made by that maker began to break. The neighbour then regretted doubting my grandfather and said sorry to him. People came to understand his honesty and skill, spreading his fame (名望) far and wide.
Influenced by my grandfather, my father also follows the value of “I won’t”. He always provides the freshest food, which makes his restaurant very popular in town. Once a trader wanted to sell some cheap but smelly seafood to my father, he said “No!” and stopped the business.
Now, my brother and I keep in mind what our grandfather and father taught us. Through ups and downs in life, we’ve come to deeply understand our family value behind this saying—to be truthful and honest.

Is your glass half-empty or half-full How you answer this question may show your outlook on life, your attitude towards yourself, and whether you’re optimistic or pessimistic — and it may even affect your health.
Some studies show that personality can affect many areas of your health. The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. And effective stress management is connected with many health benefits. If you tend to (倾向于) be pessimistic, don’t despair — you can learn positive thinking skills.
Positive thinking doesn’t mean that you disregard less pleasant situations in your life. Positive thinking just means that you deal with unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way.
Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic (无意识的) thoughts can be positive or negative. If the thoughts are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you’re likely an optimist — someone who practices positive thinking.
Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. They found that people who had a more positive outlook were more likely to get regular physical exercise, eat a healthier diet, and get more quality sleep. Clearly, there are many benefits of positive thinking. But why does positive thinking have such a strong effect on physical and mental health
One reason is that having a positive outlook enables you to deal better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on your body. It’s also thought that positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles — they get more physical activities and follow a healthier diet.
Even if you are not a natural-born optimist, there are things you can do to learn how to think more positively and become a positive thinker. Here are some examples of negative self-talk and ways to turn them into positive thinking.
Negative self-talk I’ve never done it before. There’s no way it will work. No one communicates with me. I’m not going to get any better at this. Positive thinking It’s an opportunity to learn something new. I can try to make it work. I’ll see if I can start the conversation. I’ll give it another try.
If you tend to have a negative outlook, don’t expect to become an optimist overnight. But with practice, gradually your self-talk will have less self-criticism (自我批判) and more self-acceptance. You may also become less critical of the world around you.
30.The word “disregard” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.lose interest in B.set a limit on C.look forward to D.pay no attention to
31.Which of the following examples shows positive thinking
A.I can work this out with time. B.This problem is beyond me.
C.I don’t have the resources. D.I don’t think I can do it.
32.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.pessimistic thinkers are born with it B.pessimists always have bad sleep quality
C.positive thinkers manage stressful situations well D.having a positive outlook helps you avoid unpleasantness
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage
A.To introduce optimism and pessimism. B.To show how self-talk affects the thoughts.
C.To highlight the benefits of positive thinking. D.To encourage people to be positive by practicing.

题目1.例文
How to Be Green
Hello, I’m Li Hua. Being green is very important to me.
In my daily life, I often try to reduce waste by using fewer plastic bags and bottles. I also reuse things like bottles and paper whenever I can. Recycling is another way I help the environment. I sort my trash and make sure recyclable materials are properly disposed of. I do these things because I believe it’s our duty to protect the Earth. It’s the only home we have.
