Summer Camps for Kids
Drama Camps
Drama camps are a great choice for children wanting to be actors. Most drama camps have a weekly theme. So with that being said, be sure to pick the week that your child is most excited about. You will find many have Harry Potter, and even Dr. Suess themed weeks.
Drama camps are filled with fun acting lessons, singing lessons, and typically a production showcase at the end of each week for the campers to showcase their new skills and talents they have learned.
Camp Fire
This camp is available in 25 cities and has different program options. If you are looking into summer camps for teenagers then this is the camp for you.
While at Camp Fire the camp counselors (顾问) help engage teens in outdoor activities and allow them to leave technology behind during the course of camp!
At the end of this camp you will be picking up your teenager who has made new friends, challenged themselves and has made lasting memories for themselves.
Summer Reading Camps
Summer reading camps are perfect for your kids who are wanting to sharpen their reading skills and increase their love of reading. Start by checking with a nearby college to see if they offer any reading camps during the summer. Many offer high-quality literacy resources through the summer and help promote literacy throughout the county.
These are usually free or a very reasonable cost.
Overnight Camps
Depending on the age of your child this may or may not be the best option for summer camp.
Overnight camps allow your child to learn to take care of themselves and take responsibility for their belongings. They are a great choice if your child does not mind being away from home and likes new adventures. The best thing about overnight camps is that they are typically a week full of different activities your child can do every day.

"What is civilization " asked Kenneth Clark 50 years ago in the influential BBC series on the subject. "I don't know, and I can't define it in abstract terms, yet. But I think I can recognize it when I see it, and I'm looking at it now." And he turned to gesture behind him, at the soaring Gothic towers and flying buttresses of Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院).
It seems inhuman to care more about a building than about people. That the sight of Notre Dame going up in flames has attracted so much more attention than floods in southern Africa which killed over 1,000 arouses understandable feelings of guilt. Yet the widespread, intense grief at the sight of the cathedral's collapsing steeple (尖塔) is in fact profoundly human—and in a particularly 21st-century way.
It is not just the economy that is global today, it is culture too. People wander the world in search not just of jobs and security but also of beauty and history. Familiarity breeds affection. A building on whose sunny steps you have rested, in front of which you have taken a selfie with your loved one, becomes a warm part of your memories and thus of yourself.
This visual age has given beauty new power, and social media have turned great works of art into superstars. Only a few, though, have achieved this status. Just as there is only ever a handful of world-famous actors, so the pantheon (万神殿) of globally recognizable cultural symbols is tiny: the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo's David, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid—and Notre Dame. Disaster, too, is visual. In the 24 hours after the fire started, videos on social media of the burning cathedral were viewed nearly a quarter of a billion times.
Yet the emotions the sight aroused were less about the building itself than about what losing it might mean. Notre Dame is an expression of humanity at its collective best. Nobody could look up into that arched (拱形的) ceiling without wondering at the collective genius of the thousands of unknown craftsmen who, over a century and a half, realized a vision so grand in its structural ambition and so delicate in its hand-made detail. Its survival through 850 years of political unrest—through war, revolution and Nazi occupation—binds the present to the past.
24.The BBC series in the first paragraph is mentioned to show ________.
A. Notre Dame is a typical example of civilization B. civilization is supposed to be defined in abstract terms
C. civilization was founded in the past and lasts for decades D. it's cruel to care more about buildings than about people
25.Notre Dame fire has aroused worldwide concerns because ________.
A. the disaster coincided with the floods in southern Africa
B. people has lost a historical landmark to take a selfie and rest
C. France's economic prosperity has made it a must-see place for visitors
D. cultural globalization has bred a common sense of cultural identity
26.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. People's sadness at the misfortune mainly lies in the building itself.
B. People wondered who contributed to such an artistic achievement.
C. Notre Dame is a witness to Nazi invasion and French revolution.
D. Fortunately we are blessed with countless splendid works of art.
27.What might be the best title for the passage
A. Notre Dame: The Architectural Treasure B. Notre Dame: The Humanistic Expression
C. Notre Dame: A Victim To Natural Disaster D. Notre Dame: A Must-be Tourist Attraction

Today, poetry and science are often considered to be mutually exclusive(互相排斥) career paths. But that wasn't always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon. Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging(再现) among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
"Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world," says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland, joined one of Illingworth's workshops. In the workshop, she was grouped with other scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-long poem, which spotlighted water, a fluid that featured in all of the group members' research projects. "It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem," Mazon says. She plans to continue writing. "We do a disservice(伤害) to ourselves to think that scientists can't be artistic and that art can't be used to communicate scientific ideas," Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. "Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and nonexperts," he says. Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees. Poetry provides a way to translate complex scientific concepts into a language that everyone can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We're all just people with-hopefully-really interesting things to say and to share.
28.What is the purpose of mentioning the celebrities in paragraph 1
A. To display they were talented. B. To show poetry and science can be combined.
C. To encourage different career paths. D. To confirm they were out of favor.
29.What are Illingworth's workshops aimed to do
A. Promote a new science-poetry journal. B. Inspire outsiders to pursue their careers in science.
C. Get scientists to exchange ideas about the latest research. D. Encourage science communication through poems.
30.What does Illingworth think of the dominant ways of science communication
A. Innovative. B. Effective. C. Conventional. D. Complex.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Scientists and Poets Think Alike B. Scientists Take on Poetry
C. Poetry: A Great Tool to Question the World D. Science Communication: A Two-way Dialogue

When parents discover their children have lied to them for the first time, it can often come as a shock to find their little treasures are capable of such a trick. But new research has suggested many parents may not even notice many of the lies their children tell them.
Psychologists have discovered that most parents are over-confident in their children's honesty and this may impair their ability to discover a lie.
The findings may help to explain why some parents seem to be willing to let their children get away with almost anything even in the face of the evidence. They say parents suffer from a "truth bias(偏见)" with their own youngsters, but when faced with lies from other people's children, they have less difficulty telling if a statement is true or not.
Dr Angela Evans, a psychologist at Brock University in Canada, said, "The close relationship that parents share with their own children may lead to parents failing to detect their children's lies. Parents' truth bias may result in parents being less suspicious of their children, allowing them to successfully cheat them."
Most children are thought to start lying as early as two years old but start telling more believable lies at around the age of four years old. Learning how to lie is considered as a key part of cognitive(认知的) and social development in children. But many parents are shocked when their children start lying to them. In their study, Dr Evans and her colleagues filmed 108 children aged between 8 and 16 as they performed a test after being asked not to look at the answers. They were then asked afterwards if they had looked, with 50 truthfully denying looking, 49 lying about looking and 9 admitting to looking.
Videos of those denying looking were then shown to 152 parents of children aged 8 to 16, 80 of whom had children who had taken part in the test. The researchers found that the parents were less able to spot lies told by their own children than by other people's children.
32.What does the underlined word "impair" in Paragraph 2 mean
A. show B. develop C. damage D. recognize
33.When lying to their parents, children can't be easily found because ______.
A. their parents pretend not to see the lies B. their parents aren't prepared for the lies
C. they are very good at hiding their lies D. they know how to lie to their parents
34.What does Dr Evans want to find about children's lying
A. What makes parents lose trust in their children B. What causes children to tell lies to their parents
C. What makes parents fail to see their children's lies D. What affects children's relations with their parents
35.What can be inferred from Dr Evans's study in the last two paragraphs
A. Parents tend to protect their own children. B. Lying is a part of children's development.
C. Children aged 8 to 16 are very likely to tell lies. D. Parents can judge lies told by children of others more easily.

Long, long ago, in a little village lived a humble(谦虚的) man named Ashwin. He went about making ends meet by pulling a rickshaw(人力车) and transporting passengers from one destination to another. Times were hard and he had to take the responsibility for supporting his family.
One day, while returning from work, a man who looked like a wealthy person coming from the city stopped his rickshaw. He quickly told Ashwin the place he wanted to visit. His car had broken down and he desperately needed to get to the mentioned address urgently. After an uneventful ride, they reached the destination, and the passenger paid the fare.
Ashwin, on returning home, found to his surprise that his passenger just then had dropped a small bag in his rickshaw. On opening it, he found 50 gold coins in it. He showed it to his family who couldn't believe their luck. His wife said with joy, "Thank goodness. Now we find a solution to our problems."
That night, Ashwin couldn't sleep. His conscience(良心) kept troubling him. At the crack of dawn, he woke his wife up. He said, "Lalita, I think it's wrong to keep someone else's gold coins. I am going to search for the man and hand over the coins to him." Lalita was shocked and cried, but Ashwin stuck to his word. He tried hard to find the man, but nothing seemed to work.
Eventually when he was about to give up, he saw that wealthy passenger. Ashwin ran to him and thrust (塞) the bag in his hand, "Sir, you left this bag in my rickshaw. I have been looking for you since then and I am so relieved to find you. Please take this," he said.

How to Survive in an Earthquake
①Earthquakes have happened in many places recently, causing significant damage. So how to keep safe during an earthquake has become an important issue. Here are some guidelines.
Above all, don't be nervous and try to keep calm. ②If you are outdoors, it's necessary to find an open area away from trees, buildings, power lines and anything else that might fall on you. If you are indoors, move to a safe place such as under a strong desk. Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect yourself from falling objects. Finally, never use the lift.
Actually, we can reduce the damage earthquakes bring us if we take right measures.

范文:
The man was surprised. He was touched by Ashwin's conscience and said he wanted to meet his family. Ashwin took the man home and introduced him to his family. The man looked at the poor condition of Ashwin's house and his children and told Ashwin that he would like to help his family. Ashwin refused, but the man was insistent and said, "I would like to take the responsibility for educating your children." Ashwin could not refuse the assistance since he wanted the children to become someone important. He agreed to send them to the city.
Ashwin's children then got educated and did well. Each vacation they went home to visit their parents. Ashwin often reminded them, "Never do anything at the cost of someone else." The children remembered the advice and followed it. Years later, they became successful. When the poor man's children had children of their own, they often told them the story about the small bag with 50 gold coins.
