第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
When the first modern Olympics kicked off in Athens in 1896, it wasn’t clear whether they’d last. However, it continued in 1900 and 1904, but not as a main attraction. Some of the Olympic events might seem a bit unusual to today’s sports fans.
Chariot(战车) Racing
Starting around 684 B.C., drivers raced each other in horse-drawn chariots at the Olympics, sometimes crashing into one another. Only men could join in Olympic events as athletes, but wealthy women could show their support for chariots as sponsors. Because it was a chariot’s funder who received the victory title, not the racer himself, this was the only way women could “win” at the Olympics.
Hot Air Balloon Racing
With the expanded time, the 1900 Olympics featured many more athletes and events than the 1896 Olympics, including various hot air balloon competitions. Hot air balloon drivers competed in terms of distance traveled, altitude reached and best photograph taken from a balloon. However, hot air balloon racing made its appearance for the first time and also the last time in 1900.
Live Pigeon(鸽子) Shooting
Another event that appeared first at the 1900 Olympics was live pigeon shooting. In this competition, organizers set free pigeons into the air in front of a competitor, who then shot as many as possible. The winner was a Belgian man named Lcon de Lun, who shot 21 pigeons. Altogether, the competitors killed around 300 pigeons. Luckily, live pigeon shooting only appeared at the Olympics once.
Painting
Starting with the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and continuing until the 1948 games in London, the Olympics held art competitions in painting as well as sculpture, music, architecture and literature. The art competitions were called off because so many competitors were professional artists, and the Olympics were supposed to make the amateurs (people who didn’t get paid for their athletic or artistic talent) shine.
1. How could a woman be involved in Chariot Racing
A. By training a chariot driver. B. By funding a chariot.
C. By competing in the race. D. By signing up as a volunteer.
2. What do Hot Air Balloon Racing and Live Pigeon Shooting have in common
A They involved the use of animals as a necessary part.
B. They were warmly welcomed by the audience.
C. They required excellent skills in photography.
D. They only existed once in history as Olympic events.
3. Why were the art competitions removed from the Olympic Games
A. The costs of organizing them were too high.
B. The quality of the artistic works was far from satisfactory.
C. The competitors were not what the organizers expected.
D. The organizers believed arts were not as important as sports.

A famous American poet Robert Frost once said, “Poetry is what gets lost in translation. ”But XuYuanchong, well-known Chinese translator, had tried to convey the beauty of ancient Chinese poetry throughout his life. His teacher Qian Zhongshu commented on his poetry translation, “You are dancing while chained by rhyme and rhythm, but the dance shows amazing freedom and beauty, which is quite impressive.”
Since 1978, Xu had published more than 100 translated works in Chinese, English and French, reaching millions of readers at home and abroad. Most notably, he translated Chinese poems into rhymed verses in both English and French. He was also the first Asian winner of the Aurora Borealis Prize for Outstanding Translation of Fiction Literature.
Xu was known to be very fastidious in his work. For him, English is a “ scientific” language that needs exactness while Chinese is an “artistic” language that includes a wider range of content. Following this principle, Xu kept not only faithfulness in the sense but beauty in sensibility in his translation.
Through Xu’s translations, time-honored Chinese wisdom has made an impact on Western societies and the world. For example, when former US president Barack Obama tried to begin a healthcare project during his presidency, some senators disagreed at first. But after reading the poem titled Fishing in Snow translated by Xu, one senator was so impressed with the fisherman’s independent thinking that he chose to part with the party line to support Obama.
Having made such great achievements, Xu maintained a routine. Every day he translated about1, 000 words, working till 3 to 4 a. m., sleeping for about 3 hours and getting up at 6 a. m. to continue.“ Translation is a means of communicating with the writer’s soul. A sudden flicker of a good word or a good line thrills every pore (毛孔) and every inch of my skin,” Xu said.
4. What does the text tell us about Xu Yuanchong
A. He mastered at least three foreign languages.
B. He translated about 100 Chinese works into English.
C. He was the first winner of the Aurora Borcalis Prize.
D. He was widely known for his translated rhymed verses.
5. What does the underlined word “fastidious” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Particular. B. Satisfied. C. Inventive. D. Productive.
6. Why does the author give the example in Paragraph 4
A. To recommend Xu’s translation works. B. To stress the charm of Chinese poetry.
C. To show Xu’s great translation skills. D. To prove the wisdom of the ancient Chinese.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Xu
A. Thoughtful and modest. B. Generous and objective
C. Creative and open-minded. D. Devoted and hard-working.

On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the “wisdom of crowds” effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate.
This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren’t always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate. If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won’t cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people’s estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people’s errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down.
But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals. For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals.
In a follow-up study with 100 university students the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates Did they follow those least willing to change their minds This happened some of the time, but it wasn’t the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they “shared arguments and reasoned together”. Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.
8. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about
A. The methods of estimation. B. The underlying logic of the effect.
C. The causes of people’s errors. D. The design of Galton’s experiment.
9. Navajas’ study found that the average accuracy could increase even if ________.
A. the crowds were relatively small B. there were occasional underestimates
C. individuals did not communicate D. estimates were not fully independent
10. What did the follow-up study focus on
A. The size of the groups. B. The dominant members.
C. The discussion process. D. The individual estimates.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward Navajas’ studies
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.

Born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, Gen Z is often labelled as “digital natives”. Therefore, it may come as a surprise that Gen Z is turning away from screens and heading outdoors. From forest bathing to camping trips, more young adults are embracing nature as part of their lives.
Digital burnout is driving change. Gen Z spends more time online than any other generation, with daily screen time averaging 6-9 hours. According to a recent survey by Pew Research Centre, over 60% of Gen Z respondents reported feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of staying digitally connected. Therefore, nature offers an escape. For Gen Z, being outdoors isn't just leisure, it’s a form of essential self-care.
Ironically, the very platforms driving digital burnout are now fuelling nature engagement. Social media is not just part of the problem but it’s also part of the solution. Popular hashtags such as #Hiking, #Ice Bathing, #RunningClubs, and #VanLife have received billions of views online. Health and lifestyle influencers share experiences of these activities, reframing nature as desirable and reachable. Although access to nature is still limited by safety concerns, cost, and urban density, Gen Z is adapting as best as they can. From sharing equipment to joining outdoor clubs, they’re finding creative ways to reclaim public spaces.
Reconnecting with nature is also driven by environmental values. From eco-tourism to zero-waste hiking, Gen Z approaches outdoor time with purpose. Gen Z is reshaping global movements, using social media to spread climate advocacy and redefine sustainable living. This generation is embracing outdoor experiences that are low-cost, low-tech, and deeply fulfilling. Amongst all these activities, run clubs and social fitness events have exploded in popularity.
With a growing number of Gen Z passionate about spending time outdoors, it’s evident that many are turning to nature to restore balance, foster connection, and contribute to a healthier world.
12. What do the numbers in paragraph 2 show
A. Gen Z’s digital overexposure. B. Gen Z’s preference for screens.
C. The necessity of digital connection. D. The phenomenon of online addiction.
13. Which best describes social media’s role for Gen Z
A. Double-edged. B. Problem-causing. C. Fun-oriented. D. Ever-changing.
14. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Online platforms advocate eco-tourism. B. Gen Z has strong environmental awareness.
C. Engaging in outdoor activities is challenging. D. Social fitness events require high-end equipment.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. From Clicks to Cliffs: The Call of the Wild B. Beyond the Screen: The Truth of Outdoor Lives

It all began with a “fun” indoor hockey tournament (曲棍球锦标赛) for U11, U12, and U13 kids. The organizers even encouraged U10 players to join, so naturally, the boys and girls I coached jumped at the chance. They loved hockey, but most had never played indoors before — not even once. They didn't even have a goalkeeper. “No problem,” the organizers promised us.“You can put an extra player on the field.”
On the day of the tournament, we found out our U10 team was drawn into a group with U13 players — many of them were provincial-level (省级的) stars. It was going to be a mismatch, to say the least. But our kids They were excited. They wanted to try, and they were ready to face whatever came their way.
That was, until the first whistle blew.
When the older kids, skilled and confident, began flicking (挑击) the ball with incredible force, our kids had to dive and duck because they had no protective masks on their faces. With no goalkeeper to protect the net, they had no choice but to block the shots (射门) with whatever they had — arms, legs, and pure willpower. But still, it was a one-sided killing, with my little players struggling to fight a losing battle.
I looked at the organizers, hoping they would step in. But their response was cold. “This is just a fun tournament,” they said, “but there are prizes. Flicking stays.”
And so, our young team faced wave after wave of nonstop shots from players much older and stronger. Each time the ball slipped past them and a goal was scored, I saw something in their eyes — although they didn’t look for sympathy, that eager search for hope was clearly weakening. None of the parents, teachers, or schoolmates seated aside was making a sound. It seemed the entire arena (竞技场) was in dead silence.
