Your friend comes over to talk to you after lunch—— but when he opens his mouth, a terrible smell hits your nose. Ugh! He must have eaten garlic(大蒜) during lunch. People who love garlic find it tasty. But the delicious taste comes with garlic breath. It stays in your mouth for hours.
Why does garlic give people such stinky breath Most bad breath comes from small bits of food between your teeth. But garlic breath is different. It doesn't start until the garlic hits your stomach, according to Sheryl Barringer, an American expert in food science.
Garlic breaks down into small particles(微粒) in your stomach. One of these particles is AMS. It is so small that it can move through your stomach to blood. Your blood then moves it to your lungs. There,it mixes with oxygen and carbon dioxide. When you breathe out, AMS comes out together with carbon dioxide. This causes garlic breath.
This can last up to 24 hours. That would be terrible for the people around you. Luckily, there are a few foods that can help. Eating apples, lettuce(生菜) or peppermint(薄荷) greatly make garlic breath less, Barringer told Live Science. That's because these foods can make AMS particles big enough so that they cannot go into your blood and lungs.
