Encounters with folk music and distinctive European instruments are always a creative inspiration. Anything different from the usual mainstream and listening habits makes us curious.
Germany: Waldzither
Only recently, Waldzither made it onto the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. It has been around for more than 120 years, dating back to around 1900, when it first appeared in Thuringia. Interestingly, the first models of this folk instrument were made and played by loggers and miners, who then passed on their knowledge from generation to generation.
Greece: Bouzouki
The bouzouki is an international ambassador of Greece and has long become a symbol of Greece displaying an unstoppable passion for life and Southern melancholy at the same time. This pear-shaped stringed instrument, often seen as traditional, only entered Greece’s culture in the 1920s. With six or eight double chorus strings, the bouzouki is available in Greek or Irish versions.
Switzerland: Alphorn
Switzerland has more to offer than pocket knives, cheese, and chocolate. The country also has a musical national symbol: the alphorn. Around four metres in length, the wooden instrument was originally used by sheepmen to communicate across mountains and valleys. The alphorn is a natural instrument that seeks to explore the emotions of freedom, vastness, and loneliness through the sounds of nature.
Armenia: Duduk
This flute ranks among the world’s hardest to play yet develops as a beloved national instrument of Armenia. With an emotionally fascinating sound, the duduk tells stories of loneliness and vastly expansive landscapes. Crafted traditionally from selected woods which are wetted, dried, and then stored for several years to dry out completely, the duduk since 2005 has been recognized by UNESCO.
1. Which instrument has different versions
A. Waldzither. B. Bouzouki. C. Alphorn. D. Duduk.
2. What was the alphorn initially designed for
A. Folk stories telling. B. Interaction among sheepmen.
C. Knowledge spreading. D. Protection of local culture.
3. What do the four instruments have in common
A. Their music fits common listening habits. B. They all play mainstream music.
C. Their music appeals to Europeans only. D. They are unique folk instruments.

The day Barry and Margaret Sharman got married in 1968, they brought their wedding party to a photographer’s studio in Armstrong, British Columbia. However, when the photos became available, the newlyweds, with little money to spare, left the photos uncollected. “I just filed it away in my mind after we moved to Vancouver Island,” said Margaret. Years later, the studio closed and the photographer was nowhere to be found.
Then last month, more than 56 years later, Margaret was reunited with her long-lost wedding photos from Sandy Farynuk, one of her former bridesmaids (伴娘) and longtime friends. The photos had resurfaced when they were found in a box of photos donated from a garage sale to the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery, where Farynuk’s historian friend worked. “Oh, my God That’s me!” Farynuk cried out. The Sharmans had also never seen the photos.
“It was right before Christmas and I had the photos delivered to them by their son, Noah,” Farynuk said. “I’ve known Margaret since I was two and I knew how much these would mean to her.” Barry Sharman said this unexpected gift brought Margaret to tears and they were both instantly transported back to their wedding reception.
It was especially touching for Margaret to see her older late sister Ruth in the group photo. “My mother made all of the bridesmaids’ pink dresses, and she made my wedding dress and put a lot of little flowers around the sleeves,” Margaret recalled. “I was overwhelmed when I saw the photos — that day is not very clear to me, but I remember that night one of them cheerfully picked Margaret up, took her shoe off and passed it around so people could fill it with money,” said Barry. The donations paid for their honeymoon.
Margaret said she wished she could track down the photographer. “He’s an angel,” she said. “The photos he took 56 years ago are the most thoughtful and precious gift I could ever have imagined.”
4. Why didn’t the couple get their wedding photos
A. They moved away later. B. They completely forgot.
C. They couldn’t afford them. D. The photographer lost them.
5. How did Margaret reunite with the photos
A. Her son regained them from the photographer. B. A museum historian mailed them to her.
C. She spotted them in a deserted garage box. D. Her close friend found them accidentally.
6. What can be learned about the couple’s wedding reception
A. Margaret’s sister missed their wedding.
B. Barry remembers every detail of the dresses.
C. Margaret’s mother offered them great assistance.
D. A certain friend took off Margaret’s shoe just for fun.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A photographer Creates Miracles B. Lost Photos Finally Reappear
C. A Wedding Over Half a Century ago D. Warm Memories Through the Years

Cities are not just visual landscapes — they are acoustic (声音的) environments. Yet for decades, urban planning has treated sound primarily as a disturbance to be blocked. Today, this mindset is shifting.
Long-term exposure to high noise increases stress, sleep disorders, and heart disease. Yet urban sounds are not necessarily negative. Researchers like Barry Truax and Murray Schafer pioneered the concept of the soundscape: listening to the total acoustic environment instead of measuring single sources of noise. Recent studies show that diverse sound environments — for example, combining birdsong, water features, or urban plants — can reduce stress levels compared to monotonous low-frequency noise.
How to shape a city that makes good sounds Urban layout (布局) matters. Wide roads can bring down noise but may increase traffic speed, generating more sound. Good urban sound design may help avoid this. In Miami Beach, SoundScape Park combines landscape architecture with a special sound system to improve performance effect, showing how public space can use sound positively.
However, despite growing awareness, few city plans include sound as a core design factor. Cities like Paris and Zurich are beginning to change this by using noise maps in their city plans and requiring acoustic impact assessments for major construction. Integrating sound-sensitive criteria into planning policy ensures that sound comfort is considered with air quality, light, and mobility.
New technologies are also helping us shape a better soundscape. Acoustic sensors and AI-powered noise mapping tools can track real-time sound conditions and mobile apps enable citizens to report pleasant or disturbing soundscapes, encouraging shared sound management.
Urban sound design must go beyond noise control. City planners, architects, and local communities should co-create spaces that sound as good as they look. Good urban soundscapes remind us that cities are not silent — they are meant to be heard.
8. What was the problem with past city planning
A. Focusing on diverse environments. B. Ignoring the management of noise.
C. Undervaluing the role of sound. D. Designing poor urban soundscapes.
9. What does the underlined word “monotonous” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Single. B. Disturbing. C. Mixed. D. Consistent.
10. Which of the following contributes to a better soundscape
A. Having urban roads expanded. B. Maximizing control of individual noise.
C. Inspiring joint sound-shaping efforts. D. Improving urban air quality and mobility.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Urban sound design comes first. B. Soundscape design should be taken seriously.
C. Noise control is no longer necessary. D. Cities’ soundscape improves its appearance.

Microbes (微生物) from Siberian permafrost (冻土) seem to have remained alive over 100,000 years, and their genetic similarities with other species suggest long lifespans may be common among the closest living relatives of complex-celled organisms. Other microbes in ancient marine mud, some over 100 million years old, raise questions about whether single organisms can survive that long. “I can’t run an experiment that long and time is the most unusual factor,” says Karen Lloyd.
Lloyd’s team searched for microbes in ancient, unchanged places, surviving microbes must match the environment’s age. This led them to Siberia’s Chukchi Peninsula, where they sampled DNA from marine mud frozen 100,000 — 120,000 years ago.
To distinguish the living cells from the dead ones, researchers placed millions of DNA pieces from permafrost to reconstruct genomes (染色体). They then added an enzyme (酶) to repair degraded DNA and repeated reconstruction. Most genomes became more complete after repair, indicating dead cells lacking DNA integrity. But genomes from six species hardly changed, implying they came from living cells that had actively maintained their DNA for over 100,000 years.
All six species with complete DNA belonged to a group called Asgard microbes, considered the closest relatives of complex life forms. “Finding living Asgard microbes in ancient permafrost provides a window into their evolutionary history and how they may have influenced the emergence of complex organisms,” says team member Renxing Liang at the China University of Geosciences.
A further surprise was that the long-lived species were much like Asgard microbes from non-extreme environments. They share genes for protein and DNA repair, likely enabling endurance in extremely low-energy environments.
Steven D’Hondt of the University of Rhode Island calls the work a real advance in understanding extremely long lifespans and their evolutionary basis. He suggests the results shouldn’t extend beyond frozen environments, mentioning frozen survival differs from living with very low-energy activities.
12. Why did Lloyd go to Siberia’s Chukchi Peninsula
A. To explore the ancient ocean. B. To prove her previous guess.
C. To remove frozen marine mud. D. To search for target microbes.
13 How did the researchers tell the cells were alive
A. By conducting experiments. B. By analyzing cases.
C. By referring to documents. D. By designing models.
14. What do we know about the Asgard microbes
A. They have a close connection with complex life.
B. They prefer to live in low-energy environments.
C. They can’t repair their own DNA independently.
D They don’t influence the evolution of complex life.
15. What is Steven D’Hondt’s suggestion about
A. Exploring the value of the studies. B. Applying the results properly.
C Focusing on the follow-up studies. D. Improving the research methods.

Lila had struggled with overwhelming stage fright ever since she picked up the violin two years ago. In the school orchestra, she always hid in the back row, her violin’s sound barely hearable beneath the others. Even when her music teacher, Mrs. Henderson, gently urged her to try a solo, Lila would shake her head — just the image of standing alone on stage, under the bright lights and hundreds of staring eyes, made her fingers go numb(麻木的), unable to press the right strings.
Everything shifted one weekend when her grandma, dusting off an old wooden music box, found a yellowed note inside. Dated 1957, it was her grandma’s own handwriting: “Too scared to play at the county fair. But Aunt Mabel said courage isn’t no fear — it’s playing anyway.” As Grandma handed it to Lila, her eyes soft with memory, Lila felt a spark. She chose Lullaby for the Dawn — the tune Grandma sang to her every night when she was little — and practiced constantly. She practiced at the bus stop, ignoring curious glances; she even ran through the melody(旋律) before bed, her violin leaning on her lap.
When the spring concert arrived, Lila’s knees knocked as she walked onstage. But then she spotted Grandma in the front row, holding the note up like a small flag. Taking a shaky breath, Lila closed her eyes and drew the bow(琴弓)across the strings. The first notes were somewhat unsteady, but soon the familiar melody wrapped around her, and she forgot the audience. When the last note faded, the room fell quiet for a second — then burst into thunderous applause.
Afterward, a little girl with a violin approached Lila. Her eyes shone with hope as she whispered, “I have a small school concert in three days, but I’m so scared to play alone.” Lila knelt down, pulled out a piece of paper, and wrote neatly, “Courage is starting when hands shake.” She handed the note to the girl, squeezing her small hand gently, and said, “You’ve got this.”
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Three days later, Lila saw the little girl in the backstage area.
