Every year, TIME highlights inventions that are making the world better, smarter and even a bit more fun. Here are some select ones that will absolutely blow your kids’ mind.
Sphero Indi ($124.99)
Coding is a matter of problem-solving and pattern recognition. Sphero Indi teaches both no screen required. Instead, kids use different-colored cards to move a robotic car from point A to B — green cards increasing its speed, pink cards telling it to turn left, and so on. “We really wanted to bring these abstract concepts into the physical world.” says Jef Wiencrot, one of the product developers.
Sproutel Purrble ($49.99)
For children who are upset for some reason, Purrble comes to their rescue. An interactive toy equipped with seven sensors that respond to touch. Purrble’s heartbeat speeds up when it senses somebody’s playing with it. Kids can then comfort their companion with gentle petting, slowing Purrble’s rapid heartbeat to a purr (咕噜声) — calming themselves as well in the process.
Thames & Kosmos Mega Cyborg Hand ($39.95)
The effort to get kids interested in science has just got a helping hand — a cyborg hand, to be precise. Kids build a robotic arm that copies their hand gestures, while they learn about engineering and robotics. Once assembled (组装) and slipped on like a glove, the device passes forces from the user’s fingers to the extended ones of the robotic hand.
Lego recycled brick (Unpriced)
The Lego Group, intending to make all Lego bricks from sustainable sources by 2030, spent the past three years testing different recycled PET plastic materials, and finally developed its first recycled PET brick that is nearly identical to the usual brick. The Danish toy company hopes to integrate the recycled blocks into Lego sets in the next 18 to 24 months.
21. What do Sphero Indi and Thames & Kosmos Mega Cyborg Hand have in common
A. They are invented by kids. B. They need fitting together first.
C. They train kids in programming. D. They combine fun with learning.
22. Which invention best suits kids who need emotional comfort
A. Sphero Indi. B. Lego recycled brick.
C. Sproutel Purrble. D. Thames & Kosmos Mega Cyborg Hand.
23. What makes Lego recycled brick special
A. It can be mass produced. B. It is environmentally friendly.
C. It is a solution to testing plastics. D. It looks distinct from the usual one.

Lately, my 90-year-old mother has been sleepier and sleepier. This is very strange and worrying. At the same time, my 92-year-old father has been suffering his own health problems. It is a terrible thing to see my father struggle to get my mother to talk, say something, when she doesn’t have the energy.
The other day, I recalled how my mother used to visit a woman named Mrs. Demopolis, a Greek immigrant, who made the best baklava(果仁蜜饼) in the world! She gave lessons on baking it to my mother. Also, my mother often baked baklava at home. As I spoke of this over the phone, my silent mother perked up and said how much she’d like to have one again.
Now, they live in Florida and I live in Wales, UK, so I can’t go and bring her some baklava or even make some in her kitchen. But what I did suggest was that my father could buy some baklava at a Greek restaurant and I could do the same, and wouldn’t it be fun to eat our baklava at exactly the same time and so, be together sharing the moment and the pleasure My parents loved the idea and we decided to do it.
Two days later we both had our baklava and shared the experience. It meant a lot to my parents, and to me, to do this. My mother said she wanted to do this again, maybe with another food or even baklava again! Why not And as she only keeps losing weight instead of gaining, it is good for her to find foods that appeal to her appetite . It is becoming harder to find ways to communicate over the phone, but this is at least a very good way to do so.
24. Why does the author feel worried
A. Her mother can’t walk by herself. B. Her mother is becoming less active.
C. Her father has to get her mother to talk. D. Her mother refuses to talk with her father.
25. What does the underlined phrase “perked up” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Calmed down. B. Turned around.
C. Held one’s breath. D. Came to life.
26. What did the author suggest to please her mother
A. They should enjoy the same food at the same time.
B. The author should buy some baklava for her mother.
C. Her mother should make some baklava in her kitchen.
D. Her family should get together to look after her mother.
27. What do we know about the author’s mother
A. She hopes to live with her daughter. B. She is looking for her favorite food.
C. She likes communicating in this way. D. She thinks baklava is the most delicious.
C
Green-fingered grandmothers all over the world have noticed a disturbing trend: Spring seems to be arriving earlier every year, which gets the time of their plants producing new leaves out of control. But without hard data, it is difficult to make people believe those opinions. Now, scientists have found a new source of data — old television footage (片段) of outdoor sporting events, which shows how early trees and other plants are producing new leaves each year, and that provides new evidence to prove their opinions.
Scientists started with footage of the Tour of Flanders, a professional cycling race that’s taken place in Belgium nearly every April since 1913. The researchers watched more than 200 hours of video for races from 1982 to 2022, picking out 20 trees that they could see clearly in the following years. For each tree, they noted the presence — or absence — of leaves, along with their size.
The old footage shows that spring has sprung earlier along the race course in the past ten years. In the 1980s, hardly did any trees have leaves at that time in the course of the race. But from 2007 to 2022, 48% of trees had at least started producing leaves, the team reporting today in Methods in Ecology and Evolution.
It isn’t surprising that the Belgian trees are producing new leaves earlier, given previous studies in places with detailed leaf-growth records. But this is the first time researchers have used old sporting footage to come to similar results. The researchers say this latest study is just a start, and old television footage could be a valuable resource in the long search for a better understanding of how climate is affecting plants.
28. What evidence did scientists newly find to support their opinions
A. Newly found trees. B. Old TV footage.
C. Professional bike races. D. Outdoor sporting events.
29. What did researchers find from cycling race videos
A. Trees had new leaves in April in the 1980s.
B. Trees grew larger in size with time.
C. About half of the trees had leaves since 2007.
D. The videos recorded changes of the cycling race.
30. What do researchers indicate in the end
A. They will apply old TV footage to other fields.
B. They will look for new valuable resources to study.
C. They will observe tree changes more carefully.
D. They will find more from old TV footage.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Early arrival of spring disturbs people.
B. A team of researchers focus on tree changes.
C. Research finds evidence of spring arriving earlier.
D. Climate has been changing in Belgium since 1981.
D
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was invented by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers. It is a self-report questionnaire indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. The MBTI personality inventory (量表) sorts people into 16 type categories, each of which is represented by four-letter codes such as INFP and ESTJ. Every year, about 1.5 million people have enjoyed discovering their personality type by completing the MBTI. Many companies, as well as hundreds of universities, use it in hiring and training.
Nevertheless, the MBTI has received a noticeable criticism from the academic community. Some research suggests the MBTI is unreliable because the same person can get different results when retaking the test. Other studies have questioned the validity of the MBTI, which is the ability of the test to accurately link the “types” to outcomes in the real world -for example, how well people classified as a certain type will perform in a given job.
Merve Emre, a professor a Oxford University, points out that it would be more scientifically advisable to score the MBTI scales continuously to show people the degree to which they resemble the types. Even when the MBTI’s results don’t quite match your intuition (直觉) about yourself or are just wrong, they can still provide self-insight and insight into differences and similarities between people.
Scoring and interpreting the MBTI the way other personality inventories are scored and interpreted might be less fun than finding. All of the folklore (民间看法) about INFPs, ESTJs, etc. would have to be dismissed. But, in the end the MBTI is sufficiently reliable and valid enough to be useful in a number of real-world contexts.
32. What do we know about the MBTI from the first paragraph
A. It is a personality-testing tool. B. It is divided into 16 categories.
C. It is a study of personal preference. D. It is a questionnaire on four-letter codes.
33. Why does the MBTI invite criticism
A. It performs badly in job interviews B. Its reliability has been questioned.
C. It requires people to retake the test D. Its advantages are not fully shown.
34. What does Merve Emre think of the MBTI
A. It is beyond criticism. B. It is a more scientific test.
C. It is less fun than other tests. D. It is useful for self-exploration.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. How Can We Use the MBTI B. Why do We Criticise the MBTI
C. Is the MBTI Totally Meaningless D. Is Scoring the MBTI Really Necessary

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Living in a busy city, Diana never thought that her life would be influenced by that of an animal. But as fate would have it, she became the caregiver of a chicken named Betty, who has brought more adventure and joy into her life than she could ever have imagined.
It all started when Diana came across Betty in a farmer’s market. She was the last chicken left, and the farmer was looking to sell her quickly. Her white feathers and big brown eyes caught Diana’s attention, and she knew she had to take her home.
Diana lives in a small apartment in the heart of the city, so accommodating a chicken was no easy feat (技艺). But she soon realized that Betty was quite content living the city life. As time passed, Betty and Diana became inseparable. She would follow her around everywhere she went and would even jump up onto her lap when she sat down. It was hard to imagine life without her.
One of the best things about having a chicken in the city is the fresh eggs. Betty would lay an egg every morning, and there was something so satisfying about cracking open an egg that was still warm from the chicken.
One day, a new neighbor moved in next door, and Diana couldn’t help but notice that he had a curious look on his face every time he saw Betty. She soon found out that he was an animal control officer. Diana knew that trouble was coming when she received a letter from the city telling her that she had to get rid of Betty. She was upset at the thought of losing her, but she wasn’t a- bout to give up without a fight.
Diana consulted with some of her friends who were lawyers, and they helped her come up with a plan of action. They decided to go to court and argue that Betty was more than just an animal; she was a companion who had brought joy and happiness into her life.

A. They should enjoy the same food at the same time.
B. The author should buy some baklava for her mother.
C. Her mother should make some baklava in her kitchen.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The day of the court battle was very difficult.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With the court battle behind us, Betty and Diana continued living our city life together.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
The day of the court battle was very difficult. Diana presented her case to the judge, and the animal control officer argued that chickens had no place in the city. It was anyone’s guess how the judge would rule. Just when Diana thought that all was lost. the animal control officer revealed that he had been won over by Betty’s charm and had become quite fond of her himself. He withdrew his objection, and the judge ruled in her favor.
With the court battle behind us, Betty and Diana continued living our city life together. The experience had brought them even closer, and she was grateful for the joy and laughter she had brought into her life. Betty may have been just a chicken, but she has become so much more than that to her. Nobody ever would have thought that a chicken could have such a big impact on life, but Betty proved everyone wrong. She showed that even in the midst of a busy city, there is room for a little bit of country living.
