Cristina Mittermeier, a pioneering (开创性的) photographer, cares about nature and wants to protect it. Her lens (镜头) inspires action and offers hope.
Mittermeier’s love for nature began early. This love led her to study marine (海洋的) biology, a field she focused on with the dream of studying whales at first. But soon she saw the damaging effects of industrial fishing, which caused a change in her career (职业). “What I wanted to do was try my best to call on the whole world to understand how easily the oceans can be destroyed.” she explained. Science, while necessary, felt not enough to influence a larger population. Photography became her chosen tool.
She has invented her work a form of “visual medicine”, balancing the seriousness of environmental problems with a call to action. Her ideas for helping nature are practical and include listening to what local people know and how they live with the environment.
Mittermeier’s latest book Hope shows her efforts in environmental protection. By working with people from all over the world to create the book, she turned it into a group effort instead of just her own. The book’s 130 photographs, covering twenty years, are displayed (展示) not by geography or species, but by themes that tell the story of life on our planet.
Through her work, Mittermeier continually attaches importance to the role of youth in reshaping the planet’s future, Visual storytelling, she argues, is likely to encourage young people to take action quickly — not through fear but by directing attention to finding means of solving problems and celebrating victories (胜利), however small.
Cristina Mittermeier’s life shows the great power of art with a purpose. Her lens catches not just what is but what could be, urging us all to act toward a future where people and nature can live peacefully.
24. What caused a change in Mittermeier’s career
A. Her interest in nature. B. Her love for photography.
C. The power of science. D. The alarming scene of industrial fishing.
25. Which of the following can best describe Mittermeier
A. Creative and inspiring B. Curious and independent.
C. Hardworking and calm. D. Energetic and humorous.
26. What can we learn about Hope
A. It focuses on present-day photos. B. It talks about the same species.
C. It is created through shared efforts. D. It is a story book for children.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Cristina Mittermeier: Photography Inspires Action
B. Cristina Mittermeier: Dreams Come True
C. Environmental Protection: Ocean Has Artistic Beauty

The pressure of a watching audience can have positive or negative effects on human performance, and it turns out the same is true of our closest relatives.
Christen Lin at Kyoto University, Japan, and his colleagues tested a group of six chimps (黑猩猩) on three numerical tasks with different difficulty.
In the first task, the numbers 1 to 5 appeared on a screen in different locations and the chimps simply had to touch the numbers in the correct order to get a food reward (奖赏). In the second task, the chimps had to press non-adjacent numbers (like 1,3,5,7,11,15) from smallest to largest for a reward. Finally, in the hardest test, when the first number was pressed, the rest of the numbers went dark on the screen. This meant the chimps had to remember the location of the numbers in order to press them in the correct order.
The chimps were tested on the tasks thousands of times over a six-year period with different audiences — from one to eight human observers. When the task was easy, the chimps performed worse when there were more people watching. But on the most difficult task, all six of the chimps did better as the size of the audience grew.
“It was very surprising to find a great increase in performance as human observer numbers increased, because we might expect more humans being present to be more distracting (分心的),” says Lin. “For the easiest task, the humans may be distracting to them, but for the most difficult task it is possible that the humans are a stressor that actually drives them to perform better.”
Miguel Llorente at the University of Girona, Spain, suggests further studies could be about how the audience effect is related to chimps’ individual personalities. “It would also be interesting to study these effects with chimp audiences to understand more fully how these interactions play out in a natural social context,” he says.
28. What is a unique challenge to the chimps in the third task
A. Number ordering. B. Location memory.
C. Audience pressure. D. Reward system
29. In what situation did the chimps perform the best
A. During task 3 with 8 observers. B. During task 1 with 7 observers
C. During task 3 with 1 observer. D. During task 1 with 8 observers.
30. What can we learn from Lin’s words about the humans in difficult tasks
A. They may reduce task pressure. B. They may serve as a driving force.
C. They may break concentration. D. They may offer task guidance.
31. What does Llorente suggest studying about the audience effect
A. Its relation with human presence. B. Its influence on human personalities.
C. Its relation with chimps’ personalities. D. Its influence on chimps’ memory.
D
Automation(自动化)is increasingly affecting many fields causing debates like“Are Robots Coming for Your Job ” While many believe that creativity and artistic taste remain unique to human beings, advances in artificial intelligence(AI,人工智能)challenge this idea.
For example, at Rutgers University's Art and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, AI has been developed to produce beautiful, original paintings. Similarly, Amper Music offers AI-driven music creation services. Users can choose the instruments, speed, and length of the piece, and the software produces an original piece that is also "performed"and "mixed"by AI.
Amper's software is great at creating background music suitable for reality TV shows, online videos, and student films. It focuses on the market for ready-made music. These Al-created art and music are polished and attractive, but they raise important questions: What is the value of art when it can be produced in large quantities without human effort
Consider the Mona Lisa: its value comes partly from its scarcity — there is only one original. In contrast, Amper can create a new high-quality music piece every time you click, and Elgammal's AI painter can produce thousands of unique artworks rapidly. This situation creates a mixed world where art remains unique yet easily produced. It makes us wonder whether people should pay for such works and what their prices should be.
This issue is real, not imaginary. Spotify recently attracted AI researcher Francois Pachet, who used to work at Sony, to develop tools for human composers(作曲家).However, there have been reports that Spotify's playlists included music from artists who don't actually exist, possibly allowing Spotify to avoid paying royalties (版税).While Spotify says the tracks were created by real people using fake(假的)names, there are still worries about whether AI could be used to produce free music, which could harm human musicians.
As machines and technology start to replace many jobs, even creative fields like art and music are affected. This raises questions about the need for rules or groups to protect artists and whether society will continue to value human-made art more than machine-made creations. Ultimately, we must consider the effects of AI in art and music—who should get recognition when an AI-created piece wins awards like the Grammys
32. What challenges the idea that creativity and artistic taste are unique to human beings
A. Robots doing physical tasks. B. AI making progress.
C. Robots learning to debate. D. AI knowing painting.
33. What does the underlined word"scarcity"in paragraph 4 mean
A. Having high quality. B. Being extremely hard to get.
C. Having natural beauty. D. Being impossible to copy
34. What does Francois Pachet do at Spotify
A. Creating playlists. B. Producing free music.
C. Paying royalties. D. Creating tools to help musicians.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Confidence of humans'artistic ability B. Ways to promote AI-created art.
C Concerns about using AI in creative fields. D. The need for AI with human feelings.

W: Yeah, um, I was born in Bath.
M: Where is it
W: Bath is in the southwest of England, about a hundred miles from London. I guess a couple of hours on the train. It’s near Bristol, the biggest city in the southwest. Bath is a city, but it’s quite small.
M: OK. Do you think it’s a great place to live
W: It’s a fantastic place to live. Great restaurants, theatres, shops, lovely old pubs, beautiful buildings, and music festivals. Its nightlife is very quiet at the same time.
M: Wow, kind of strange. Does it have a long history
W: Well, it was a Roman city about two thousand years ago. The Romans liked it because of the hot springs. It’s the only place in Britain with hot springs. So they built baths there, you know, public baths, using the hot water. That’s where the name “Bath” comes from.

【答案】18. C 19. C 20. A
【原文】Good morning, everyone. I’m pleased to be here to give a talk. We’re two brothers from Canada, and we’ve been living in Thailand for eight years. We noticed that most English lessons here in schools focus only on reading and writing, so a lot of people can’t understand and speak well in English. And we’d like to do something about it. Our idea is simple: we want to teach people how to understand and speak English like a native speaker. Different from broadcast English programs, we design special fun English programs based on the computer and use them to teach words and expressions we use in real life. We talk in a casual style on a number of interesting topics, and we share personal stories from our real lives. Now, we have over 200 units on our website. We make a new unit every week that you can listen to on your computer anytime you want. Our materials are from English movies, TV shows, and real life conversations. We hope people will use the materials to practice every day. We are sure that your English will improve a lot.

D. Environmental Protection: Measures Come First
【答案】24. D 25. A 26. C 27. A

【答案】28. B 29. A 30. B 31. C

【答案】32. B 33. B 34. D 35. C
