“I’ve always loved practising Nirmal painting, but I wondered: Will anyone value it enough to keep it alive ” says Mohammad Abdul Hakeem, an artisan (工匠) from Telangana. With traditional art forms slowly losing their place in the modern world, the artisan felt apprehensive about the future. But his life changed when he met Sushmita Kaneri, who used to be a software engineer.
In 2021, Sushmita visited Telangana and met artisans practising Nirmal art, a wood-based craft known for its storytelling through painting. “I saw how these artisans had been practising the craft for generations, but fewer and fewer people were noticing it,” Sushmita explains. “The artisans felt that their hard work was neither recognised nor fairly valued. That’s when I knew I had to do something,” she adds.
In April 2023, Sushmita founded “Gullakaari”, a platform designed to connect artisans with customers, co- create art, and raise awareness about endangered art forms while helping artisans support their lives. By offering a marketplace for traditional art forms like Warli, Patachitra, and Gond, the platform allows artisans to reach a broader audience and benefit from a steady stream of orders.
When asked about how she has used her software engineering skills in her work, Sushmita says, “We use tech only where it adds value without changing the soul of the craft. For example, we trained the Tholu Bommalata artisans to create lamp covers with 3D- printed logos on them. When it is lit, the lamp beautifully lights up not only the fine artwork but also a 3D- printed logo, mixing traditions with modern technology.”
In just two years, Sushmita has helped more than 100 artisans make a living by using their traditional art styles to make functional products. Hakeem shares, “Working with Gullakaari has truly opened new doors for us. In the past, we had to rely on middlemen who often paid us less. Thanks to Gullakaari, now our work can reach companies and art lovers from across the country.”

5. How can Gullakaari benefit artisans
A. By broadening their customer base. B. By connecting with more middlemen.
C. By highlighting its storytelling feature. D. By teaching them software skills.
6. Why is the 3D- printed lamp cover mentioned
A. To promote modern technology. B. To introduce a new art form.
C To show how old skills are replaced. D. To illustrate how tradition meets technology.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Unfair trade in the past. B. The impact of Gullakaari.
C. Innovative products in the market. D. The hope of artisans.

From cottages surrounded by impressive gardens to days spent exploring sandy beaches and deep woods filled with wildlife, in My Family and Other Animals, English writer Gerald Durrell provided a lively record of his family’s time on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s.
Come for the attracting descriptions of Corfu landscapes and stay for Durrell’s laugh-out-loud tales of his unusual family. This book, Durrell wrote laughingly in the introduction,“was intended to be a nostalgic (怀旧的) account of natural history, but in the first few pages, I made the mistake of introducing my family.”
Durrell, later known for his zoo keeping and the preservation of wildlife, was just a child during his family’s five-year stay in Corfu. He is 10-year-old Gerry in the book — curious, passionate about animals and a detailed storyteller of his strange family: his imaginative elder brother Larry with his literary ambitions, lovestruck sister Margo, sporty brother Leslie and his ever- calm, loving mother.
Durrell’s attention to detail is what makes the book so winning, with every sight, sound and smell of the island coming alive. One minute you’ll be laughing as Larry’s clever literary friends walk down to the yellow cottage, the next you’ll be catching your breath as Durrell describes swimming at night in the Ionian Sea: “Lying on my back in the silky water, staring at the sky, only moving my hands and feet slightly, I was looking at the Milky Way stretching like a silk scarf across the sky and wondering how many stars it contained.”
My Family and Other Animals is quite difficult to tell which group it belongs to, being one part travel, one part autobiography, one part natural history, and one part comedy, with a link of descriptive language running throughout that sometimes raises it nearly to poetry.
As a real delight to read, it’s the perfect literary escapism for any adult or older teenager who is now walking down a tough road in life.
8. How did Durrel actually feel about introducing his family
A. Risky. B. Sorry. C. Confused. D. Amused.
9. Why does the author mention Jerry in Paragraph 3
A. To introduce a childhood friend. B. To highlight his imagination.
C. To show the author’s childhood view. D. To describe the author’s family life.
10. What are paragraph 4 and 5 mainly about
A. Some lively descriptions of the island. B. Durrell’s rich imagination.
C. Some interesting details of the story. D. Durrell’s writing style.
11. Where is the text most likely taken from
A. An introduction to a writer. B. A recommendation to a book.
C. A description of the effect of natural history. D. A literary review of an unusual island.

In a new study, Iowa Psychologist Ed Wasserman gave the pigeons complex categorization tests that high-level thinking would not aid in solving. Instead, the pigeons, by trial and error, eventually were able to memorize enough situations in the test. This basic process of making associations — considered a lower-level thinking technique — is the same between the test-taking pigeons and the latest AI advances.
The researchers sought to figure out two types of learning: one declarative learning is based on exercising reason according to a set of rules or strategies — a so-called higher level of learning owned mostly by people. The other, associative learning, centers on recognizing and making connections between objects or patterns, such as “sky-blue” and “water-wet. ”
Wasserman’s team designed a difficult test to find out whether the pigeons use declarative or associative learning. Each test pigeon was shown a stimulus (刺激)and had to decide, by pecking (啄) a button on the right or on the left, to which category that stimulus belonged. What made the test so demanding was that no rules or logic would help finish the task. They have to memorize the individual stimuli or regions from where the stimuli occur. Over hundreds of tests, the four test pigeons eventually upped their score from 50% to an average of 68% right.
“The pigeons are like AI masters” Wasserman says. “Both of them employ associative learning, and yet that base-level thinking is what allowed the pigeons to ultimately score successfully.” If people were to take the same test, they’d score poorly and would probably give up because they rely so heavily on rules or strategies. Those rules would get in the way of learning. The pigeon doesn’t have that high-level thinking process. But it doesn’t get in the way of their learning. In fact, in some ways it facilitates it.
“People are stunned by AI doing amazing things using a learning algorithm (算法) much like the pigeon,” Wasserman says, “yet when people talk about associative learning in humans and animals, it is discounted as inflexible and uncomplicated. ”
12. Which of the following is a typical example of associative learning
A. Tom refuses to put hands on hot stoves after burns.
B. Dolphins detect obstacles using sound waves.
C. Chimpanzees use physical gesture strategies.
D. Emily figures out math problems with logic.
13. How did the pigeons improve their performance in the test
A. By pecking the stimuli.
B. By finding rule or logic.
C. By competing with each other.
D. By making numerous attempts.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. AI and man use the same learning pattern.
B. Associative learning is underestimated.
C. People think highly of declarative learning.
D. Pigeons finish tasks with AI algorithms.
15. Which can be a suitable title of the text
A. Pigeon’s Peck Can Mirror High Tech
B. AI Contributes to a New Learning Pattern
C. AI Can Enrich Human Learning Experience
D. Pigeon’s Learning Largely Extends High Tech

I was angry about my father in the first year of college, because he didn’t care about my feelings all.
One day I had a serious quarrel with him. I was fed up with his direction and correction. How could he interfere with my life and my study plans How could he understand the importance of my university activities The only thing that he cared about was my academic performance! He didn’t understand my world and I didn’t understand his, either.
I stormed out and sighed all the way to school. Suddenly I realized that I didn’t have the assignment that was due: a thought card. This class was taught by Dr. Sidney B. Simon. The thought card was the admission ticket to his class. He would return them to us with his comment.
My first thought card read, “All that glitters(发光) is not gold.” He commented, “What does this quote mean to you Is it significant ” Obviously, he was taking it seriously. I surely didn’t want to reveal myself to him.
The week progressed. Dr. Simon’s class was quite brilliant. He challenged us to think and come up with our own responses. But I had no handling strategies to deal with it.
The second Tuesday came. I wrote on my card, “The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.” The next day the card came back: “You seem to need a listener. Is this important to your life ” I couldn’t remember a teacher caring personally about me since primary school.
With all these memories filling my mind, I raced to class. Just outside the door, I took a card and wrote, “I have the most terrible Dad of the world!” Then I dashed in. Looking up at me, he reached out for the card, and I took my seat. The moment I sat down, I felt terrible. I didn’t mean to let that out. That night I had difficiulty sleeping. What if he contacted my dad
