For most people, the idea of building the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope would seem like an impossible dream. For Nan Rendong, it was a mission that consumed the last 22 years of his life.
In 1993, at an international astronomy conference, Nan, then a respected scientist in his late forties, felt a sting when China’s voice was absent from major global telescope projects. He conceived a bold idea: China should build its own large telescope. This vision would later become the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), nicknamed “China’s Eye on the Sky.”
The journey was immensely challenging. The first hurdle was finding a suitable location. Nan led a team that spent over 10 years examining hundreds of karst depressions in the remote mountains of Guizhou Province. They often hiked for hours on rugged paths, battling harsh weather. Finally, they settled on the perfect natural bowl-like valley in Dawodang.
As the chief scientist and project manager, Nan was involved in every detail. He inspired his team with his unwavering dedication and rigorous scientific standards. The project faced numerous technical obstacles, from developing the complex cable system to the delicate reflective panels. Through years of tireless effort and problem-solving, the team made one breakthrough after another.
Sadly, Nan was diagnosed with lung cancer during the construction phase. Yet, even while receiving treatment, he continued to work, holding meetings in his hospital room and reviewing documents. He fought against time to see his dream realized.
On September 25, 2016, FAST was officially completed. It is a marvel of modern engineering, allowing astronomers to explore the universe with unprecedented depth. Nan, however, passed away less than a year later, before FAST made its first major discovery of a new pulsar.
Today, FAST stands as a monument to Nan Rendong’s vision, perseverance, and profound love for his country. He is remembered not just as a brilliant scientist, but as a national hero who dedicated his life to placing China at the forefront of astronomical research.

B. A direct order from the Chinese government.
C. The discovery of a suitable location in Guizhou.
D. His early research on pulsars.
5. How does the author describe Nan Rendong’s work on the project
A. He focused only on the theoretical design.
B. He joined the project only in its final stages.
C. He delegated all technical work to his team members.
D. He was involved in every detail and led the team.
6. The word “unwavering” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to .
A. uncertain B. steady and determined C. changing D. mild

Cats, like dogs, have been domesticated and generally thrive (茁壮成长) on human companionship. George is a 7-year-old white domestic shorthair (短毛猫) that once lived in a senior living facility, but when it closed down, he was taken to a local animal shelter, where he quickly became depressed. Finding a home for the sad cat wasn’t going to be easy — his clear unhappiness, combined with his unusual appearance, was the reason for a long stay at the shelter.
The staff in the shelter knew he needed a job, a job where he got to be the center of attention any time he walked into the room, so Alex and the others at the shelter searched for another senior care home to get George back to work.
After senior living facilities found out the cat had years of previous experience that allowed him to avoid meow-orientation, a new staff training, they were waiting in line to add George to their staff. Eventually, the shelter chose Forest Hills Personal Care Home, and George has made himself at home. To no one’s surprise, he’s perfect at his job.
“He’s a lap cat, he’s a cute cat, and he’s the kind of boy that’ll be very faithful to you and follow you around. He thrives on being with a lot of people,” Alex explains.
The residents at the personal care home love him and give him all the attention he could ever possibly need. But once his shift is over, all the elderly residents are sound asleep and the night nurses are counting the minutes until they can finally rest, George begins his nightly adventures. He gets the late night zoomies (疯跑) to get some exercise before another long day of caring for his residents. Being a working cat isn’t always easy, but George manages it effortlessly.
8 Why was it hard for George to find a new home at first
A. He was too old for adoption. B. He didn’t like being with people.
C. He looked sad and unusual. D. He needed special medical care.
9. What can we learn about George’s experience from paragraph 3
A George’s past experience made him popular.
B. New staff training was too difficult for George.
C. George’s experience wasn’t useful for his new job.
D. The shelter found it difficult to place George.
10. How does George prepare for his next workday at night
A. He sleeps with the elderly residents. B. He gets food from night nurses.
C. He plays with shelter staff. D. He runs around for exercise.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. The Lonely Shelter Dog B. A Cat Returns to His Important Job
C. Teaching Cats to Help the Elderly D. A Loving Animal Shelter

To determine the type and severity of a cancer, scientists usually analyze thin slices of a tumor (肿瘤) under a microscope. But to tell how the tumor is treated, scientists must perform genetic sequencing (排序) of the RNA isolated from the tumor, a process that can take weeks and costs thousands of dollars.
But now, Stanford Medicine researchers have developed an artificial intelligence-powered computational program, an AI program named SEQUOIA, which can predict the activity of thousands of genes within tumor cells. The tool was created using data from more than 7,000 diverse tumor samples. The team showed that it could be used routinely to predict genetic variations in breast cancers and to predict patient outcomes.
“This kind of software could be used to quickly identify gene signatures in patients’ tumors, speeding up clinical (临床) decision-making and saving the health care system thousands of dollars,” said Olivier Gevaert, PhD.
The researchers began with 7,584 cancer biopsies (活检) from 16 different cancer types. Each biopsy had been sliced into thin sections and prepared. After the researchers integrated their new cancer biopsies as well as other datasets, including images from thousands of healthy cells, the AI program was able to predict the expression patterns of more than 15,000 different genes from the stained images.
To test the effect of SEQUOIA for clinical decision-making, Gevaert and his colleagues identified breast cancer genes that the model could accurately predict the expression of and that are already used in commercial breast cancer genomic tests.
The AI model can’t yet be used in a clinical setting, but Gevaert said his team is studying its potential applications. In the future, he said, SEQUOIA could reduce the need for expensive gene expression tests. “We’ve shown how useful this could be for breast cancer, and we can now use it for all cancers,” he said. “It’s a whole new source of data that we didn’t have before.”
12. How do scientists usually find out the treatment of a tumor
A. By analyzing its thin slices. B. By using a computational program.
C. By referring to routinely collected data. D. By performing genetic sequencing.
13. What can we know about SEQUOIA from the passage
A. It has been widely used. B. It can predict all genes’ activity.
C. It can reduce health care expense. D. It has performed cancer biopsies on patients.
14. What did Gevaert think of the future of the AI model
A. Promising. B. Useless. C. Uncertain. D. Demanding.
15. What is the main idea of the passage
A. A new tool for analyzing tumor slices.
B. An AI tool to predict tumor gene activity.
C. An attempt to perform original genetic sequencing.
D. AI technology to revolutionize the treatment of cancer.

Lila was a 17-year-old senior student who dreamed of joining her school’s computer team, a group famous for its success in national programming contests. For her, joining the team meant more than just pride — it was a path to a scholarship and a chance to change her family’s future. But the team required a high-quality laptop that cost about $4,000 — something she couldn’t afford. Her family barely made ends meet: her father was still recovering from illness, and her mother worked long hours as a cleaner. Lila wanted to lift some of their burden one day, and the computer team felt like the first step toward that dream.
To save money, she worked part-time at Mr. Owen’s stationery shop, where she was trusted to run the counter alone during lunch breaks. One busy Tuesday noon, Mrs. Pearson hurried in to buy expensive pens and accidentally left her handbag on the counter. After the lunch rush, Lila found it. She opened it, hoping to contact its owner — but when she saw what was inside, her breath caught: $4,000 in cash.
At that moment, her phone rang — it was the computer team coach, reminding her that the final sign-up deadline was only three days away. Her heart beat fast. For a moment, she imagined holding a new laptop in her hands, joining the team, and winning competitions. Then her father’s voice rang in her mind: “Honesty is a promise you make to yourself, even when no one is watching.” The weight of those words pressed against the urge in her heart. She stared at the bag — at what could have been her dream — and felt tears well up. She knew no one would find out if she kept it. But she also knew she wouldn’t be able to look herself in the mirror if she did.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At last, Lila wiped her eyes and made her choice.
