Every day is Monday, eight days a week. That was my motto.
My days followed a rhythm: up with the dawn, a quick call to the boss for the day's address, ten to fourteen hours of work, then heading home singing — only to do it all again the next day, tireless and fulfilled. This was my life, year after year, a cycle I cherished. However, one day I made my usual call in the morning, only to hear, “I'm sorry, Bill. There’s nothing to do today.” Things are slowing down.
My eight-day week soon shrank to six days, then five, then three. Pacing around the house, watching bills pile up, I felt lost for the first time. I stepped into the backyard. “Perfect roofing weather,” I muttered, tears finally falling.
Just then, a knock came at the door. I wiped my face and answered to find an old friend. “Let’s go shoot pool for a rematch,” he said. I hesitated, citing tight finances. “My treat,” he insisted, jingling quarters in his pocket. Reluctantly, I agreed.
Walking to the pool hall, I was absorbed in my worries. As we entered, I heard my name. Scanning the room, I spotted a carpenter I'd worked with years before. He waved me over. “Bill, I’ve got a job for you,” he said. “I told the homeowner you're the best.” He handed me a contact card. Relief washed over me.
Before I could process it, another voice called, “Hey, Roofer My neighbor wants to talk about his roof.” Then a man approached, “I’m Joe from down the street. Can you stop by later ” “Absolutely” I said.
Later that afternoon I shook hands with Joe and we agreed I would start his roof next. Due to my high efficiency, I was introduced to roof five houses on that block, one right after the other. When my next bank statement arrived all I could do was sit and stare at it, thinking that I could actually be my own boss.
This happened during the worst recession since the Great Depression. Those chance encounters became my start. I began my own business, which has grown steadily every year since.
Every day is Monday, eight days a week. That's my motto.

Imagine walking into a crowded dining hall, where delicious smells fill the air, yet a significant amount of food goes uneaten. This is the reality at Michigan State University (MSU), where the problem of plate waste has become increasingly apparent. In response, the university has formed an innovative partnership with Raccoon Eyes, a forward-thinking startup determined to make a difference.
Since August 18th, Raccoon Eyes has put its revolutionary AI-powered cameras into service in two MSU dining halls to capture images of untouched plates, which are used to create 3D models that quantify uneaten food. “Our technology, with a remarkable 90% accuracy rate, can estimate both the weight and type of food students leave behind,” explained Ivan Zou, co-founder of Raccoon Eyes. As the data accumulates, Raccoon Eyes aims to identify specific patterns of food waste, providing MSU with valuable insights to adjust meal serving sizes and refine recipes accordingly.
This initiative builds on MSU’s previous efforts to measure food waste. For seven years, dining staff dedicated significant time to manually (手动地) weighing leftovers, which resulted in a 2019 report revealing that the average food waste per student per meal was a shocking 2.96 ounces. However, as budgets and staff were reduced, this manual system became unsustainable. Thankfully, the new Raccoon Eyes technology simplifies data collection, initiating a new era of sustainability.
To truly engage students in sustainability, Raccoon Eyes also set up interactive kiosks (小亭) throughout the dining halls, inviting students to share their thoughts on the daily food offerings. Adam Duffy, a psychology senior, praised this novel approach, appreciating how the kiosks collect student feedback. However, during a busy lunch rush, he, like many of his peers, merely glanced at the kiosk. This behavior illustrates a gap between innovation and student engagement.
Though the initiative is still in its early stages, MSU is committed to a year-long partnership with Raccoon Eyes, aiming not only to significantly reduce food waste but also to cultivate a lasting culture of sustainability on campus.
8. What caused the cooperation between MSU and Raccoon Eyes
A. The desire to refine food patterns. B. The complaints about food quality.
C. The growing concern over food waste. D. The need to adjust meal serving sizes.
9. How does Raccoon Eyes’ technology quantify food waste
A. By counting uneaten plates. B. By manually weighing leftovers.
C By asking students for feedback. D. By creating 3D models from images.
10 What do we know about the interactive kiosks
A. They are widely praised by students.
B. They gather students’ opinions on the food.
C. They are highly effective in engaging students.
D. They provide students with daily recipe advice.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. AI: End Campus Waste B. Smart Kiosks: Exchange Ideas
C. New Initiative: A Sustainable Campus D. AI-Powered cameras: Fight Food Waste

A scientist from the University at Buffalo has built on earlier research linking social media use to inflammation (炎症) with a new study that shows this connection may grow stronger over time.
The results, published in The Journal of Medical Internet Research, showed that not only was more time on social media linked to higher levels of inflammation at one moment, but it also predicted increased inflammation five weeks later. “This shows the effect may last,” says David Lee, who led the study.
There are two types of inflammation. The first is acute inflammation like redness around a cut or swelling after a sprained ankle. It’s the body’s normal way of healing from injury or infection. The second type is chronic inflammation, which lasts longer and has been tied to serious health problems such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and mental health issues. Unlike acute inflammation, chronic inflammation can be caused by everyday factors such as stress, loneliness, poor diet, lack of sleep, and not exercising enough.
Lee’s research focuses on this long-term type of inflammation. The study provides the first longitudinal (纵向的) evidence that social media use over an extended time period is possibly responsible for increased inflammation. Moreover, it assesses the effects of social media use, as measured objectively by a screen-time app rather than formerly relying on participants' memory of how much time they spent on social media.
The research team hired 171 young adults for the study and measured their C-reactive protein levels — a marker of inflammation — at the start and again after five weeks. During that time, the app recorded their daily screen use.
While the rise in inflammation doesn’t cause any immediate health issues, Lee warns that early signs of inflammation in young people could predict the onset of disease later in life. “The relation between social media use and inflammation opens up new questions for future studies,” he says, “now we need to go deeper than just screen time. We should try to understand how and why using social media affects our health.”
12. What does the new study suggest about social media use
A. It helps reduce stress and loneliness.
B. It causes immediate health problems.
C. It raises inflammation levels over time.
D. It reduces chronic inflammation in youth.
13. What does the underlined word “acute” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Lasting and mild. B. Instant and sudden.
C. deadly and severe. D. Mild and temporary.
14. What makes Lee’s research different from previous studies
A. Its way to collect data. B. Its use of various data.
C. Its interviewing method. D. Its focus on young adults.
15. What is the last paragraph talking about concerning the study
A. Its technical limitations. B. Its data collection process.
C. Its immediate health impacts. D. Its future research directions.

PE class was popular with every student. Betty was no exception. The playground saw her skipping rope at ease. Meanwhile, her classmates were watching her excitedly. The rope rotated (旋转) fast as she jumped. Time being up, the counter showed 300 skips. Betty did her best. Smiling, Betty waved a victory sign to the crowd. Just then, the bell rang, saying PE was over. Betty packed up her skipping rope. She was ready to give her answer to Ms. Blake.
Ms. Blake had asked her whether she would like to do something for the class bulletin board (板报) with the competition upcoming. Mary who was usually in charge of it had asked for sick leave. Betty was shocked that Ms. Blake had chosen her. She answered nervously, insisting that her handwriting was bad. But Ms. Blake encouraged her, saying she believed in her, expected her to do the duty and let her know her decision soon.
Approaching the teachers’ office, Betty felt nervous again. On thinking of her poor handwriting appearing on the bulletin board, she felt her stomach turning. Having decided to say no, Betty quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground.
Betty was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑) when someone nearby drew her attention. It was Jack from a different class. As she knew clearly, Jack had never been good at the long jump, but he was practicing it. Full of curiosity, she ran over to ask what he was doing. Tom explained that no one else had wanted to compete in the long jump event, and if so, their class would score zero in the school sports meet. The moment the headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try, he volunteered immediately. Betty reminded him that he wasn’t excellent in it, but Jack simply said that it wasn’t about being the best, but about trying to compete for the class. Then he went on practicing. It dawned on Betty that what a similar issue they were both faced with!
