2
Activity 1
Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the questions.
1. What causes the action in sentence (a) The dress or the wind
2. What is happening to “me” in sentence (b)
The wind causes the action.
People around “me” are pushing “me”.
Activity 1
Compare them with the following sentences and answer the questions.
3. What is the difference between the two groups of sentences
The two sentences of the first group use the passive form, while the two of the second group use the active form.
Activity 1
Compare them with the following sentences and answer the questions.
4. Why does the author choose to use the passive form instead of the active form in the reading passage
In the first sentence of the first group, the author is describing the sculpture, so the dress instead of the wind should be the author's focus and it serves as the subject. In the second sentence of the first group, “I” don't know the people around “me”, so there is no need to mention who are pushing “me”. As a result, the passive form is used here.
肯定句 be(am/is/are)+being done
否定句 be(am/is/are)+not+being done
一般疑问句 be(am/is/are)+主语+being done
特殊疑问句 特殊疑问词+be(am/is/are)+主语+being done
The classroom is being cleaned by the students now.
The famous novel is being translated into several foreign languages.
The dedicated teacher is always being praised by students and parents.
His lazy son is constantly being criticized for skipping classes and wasting time.
The school concert is being held next Saturday—tickets are already on sale.
The famous painting is being appreciated by visitors in the art gallery.
The famous painting is highly appreciated by art lovers.
2. take care of, look after, talk about, think of等动词短语用于现在进行时的被动语态时,其中的介词不可省略。
例句:The homeless animals in the shelter are being taken care of
by volunteers.
The elderly in the community are being looked after by
professional nurses.
The new policy is being talked about heatedly among
citizens recently.
More practical solutions to the problem are being thought of
by the team.
The letter is being sent by him now.(×)
正确:The letter is being posted by him now.(√,用延续性替代词)
The letter will be sent by him soon.(√,
4. “be(am/is/are)+under/in+n. ”
The old bridge is under repair these days.
The old bridge is being repaired these days.

Contemporary art
Since it began in the late 20th century, the Contemporary Art Movement has raised questions and doubts, with people asking, “Is it really art ” This was the case in 1999 with British artist Tracey Emin's work, My bed - which was, quite literally, her unmade bed. Then, in 2015, cleaners in an Italian gallery threw away an art piece after mistaking the pile of empty bottles, cigarette ends and pieces of coloured paper for rubbish! While some say contemporary art
lacks skill, meaning and artistic value. others argue that its
worth lies in its ability to stimulate new discussions and
understanding of everyday objects, such as water pipes and
iron wires.
