Han Gan, a well known artist in Tang Dynasty, is famous for his horses. He had his talent discovered by Wang Wei accidentally, who sponsored Han Gan to study painting and recommended him to a master. It was his talent and efforts that helped him serve the Emperor—Xuan Zong.
Han Gan broke away from the traditional way of drawing according to his observation. He frequently visited the stable or even lived with the stable workers for a long time, which enabled him to get inspiration from the movement of the horses.
Han Gan's works were highly valued because he highlighted the inner spirit and strength as well as the physical features through the burning eyes, bared teeth and kicking hooves. So vivid were the horses that it seemed as if they would gallop off the paper.
