Some of this year’s coolest fall festivals in the US are odd. Here are the most delightfully popular ones in the US.
Trailing of the Sheep Festival
This year is the 29th annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival, which runs from October 8-12, 2025. The festival actually involves running after sheep through the town, which occurs each year with the season change. It’s a direct callback to the area’s herding culture. Guests will have the chance to watch sheep-dog shows, shop around for woolen crafts, taste delicious treats and lamb-centric meals, and learn about the history and traditions of the town’s shepherding culture.
Sea Witch
From October 24-26, the Rehoboth Beach area comes alive with one of the country’s liveliest autumn festivals and Halloween parades. The festivities are pretty familiar, from costume contests to fair games, but there’s one star of the show that you won’t find elsewhere: the Sea Witch. According to local legend, treasure hunters flocked on a wreck (残骸) back in 1798. Some returned with stories of seeing a horrible weather witch, which tried to drown them during the hunt. In 2025, the Sea Witch is nothing more than a mascot (吉祥物) for the festivities. There’s even a Sea Witch hunt!
Greenville
Greenville is not reinventing the wheel when it comes to popular fall festivals in the US but they have one thing that others don’t. That’s a wide and diverse range of chefs, menus, and restaurants. It’s not too surprising that the city would showcase the state’s top culinary (烹饪) talents. From October 10-12, visitors can sample eats from 60 restaurants that are selling over 300 menu items. There are also over 50 beer and wine sellers, along with seven stages that will host over 80 musical performances.

I grew up in a poor family. I thought everyone in the city took the bus, because everyone in my neighborhood took the bus. I thought everyone in the city used the food bank, because all my friends’ cupboards were filled with the same government-labeled food that filled my cupboards. And I thought we all wore hand-me-down clothes.
Not until shopping in the grocery was I aware that my family was a little different. My mom used paper money that looked different from the paper money others in line were using. I asked my mom why our money looked different. She said that we used food stamps that were helped by the government so we could eat.
In high school, I was still embarrassed and wished we were not so poor, but I loved my mom and the other members of my family and knew we had things to be proud of. My mother taught me how to love and told me to believe in myself. Growing up in poverty taught me perseverance. I have always believed in myself and my abilities. I knew I could focus on school and build a life that looked different from my childhood.
As I became a man, I started understanding how my experiences enabled me to be resilient (有韧性的), and how to respect people for who they are as an individual — and not by what they have. I think there are a lot of fixed images placed on those experiencing poverty that do not actually come from the people experiencing it. These judgments come from people on the outside trying not to look into the experience. Hardworking, trustworthy, reliable, clean, efficient, successful and disciplined are all words not typically associated with poverty. But those words are very much shown by those experiencing poverty. I am proud to be who I am and proud of where I’m from.

Three scientists made groundbreaking discoveries on the working mechanism of the immune system (免疫系统). They identified “regulatory T cells,” which function as the immune system’s security guards, preventing immune cells from attacking the body’s own tissues and causing severe autoimmune diseases.
The immune system’s primary role is to distinguish foreign microbes (细菌) from the body’s own cells and then attack them. However, microbes can develop similarities to human cells. If this pretence succeeds, it can lead to a form of biological “friendly fire,” where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells.
It was long believed that the immune system was mainly protected by T cells that can recognize and kill microbes. However, some puzzling autoimmune reactions pointed to the existence of another, more complex regulator. Immunologist Shimon is among the scientists who conducted further research. In 1995, he discovered in mice that there is a particular group of immune cells, which he named “regulatory T cells,” working as the body’s security guards that stop immune cells from attacking self-tissues.
Meanwhile in the early 2000s, bio-technologists Brunkow and Ramsdell investigated why a specific type of mouse was particularly sensitive to autoimmune diseases. Their experiments took many years. While mapping a mouse’s genome (基因组) today takes only days, back then it was like looking for a needle in a huge pile of straw. They finally found the source of trouble was a variation of the gene named Foxp3, and further discovered that a similar error in a human’s gene causes IPEX syndrome, a serious autoimmune disease.
Afterwards, Shimon linked their research to his own, proving that Foxp3 aids in the creation and the operation of regulatory T cells, ensuring that the immune system is strong enough to fight off microbes and at the same time controlled enough not to injure the body.
Their foundational discoveries have paved the way for potential new treatments for autoimmune conditions, as well as more effective cancer treatments and reduced complications after organ transplants.

We usually hear the term addiction used when talking about drugs or alcohol. But researchers are finding that certain foods can trigger the same feelings as drugs. It all comes down to what’s happening in the brain. When we feel a happy rush, it’s due to a flood of the feel-good chemical dopamine in the striatum (终脑的皮层). The striatum gets a dopamine rush when something good happens. Drugs and alcohol can cause a similar high. So, it turns out, can some popular snack foods with a high level of carbohydrates and fats.
The problem isn’t with all foods containing carbohydrates and fats. Fruit is full of sugar. Oats and other whole grains have lots of carbs. Nuts and meat have fat. But such unprocessed foods — eaten in a form that’s similar to how they grew — also contain other nutrients, such as fiber, that slow digestion. That limits how quickly our bodies can absorb the nutrients.
Cookies, candy, soda, fries and other highly processed foods, however, lack those additional nutrients. Such foods contain ingredients that have been highly changed from their natural state. They’re full of easy-to-absorb carbohydrates (such as simple sugars) and added fats. What’s more, they often contain ingredients that don’t naturally occur together. “Sugar and fat don’t come together in nature,” says Gearhardt, a psychologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. But highly processed foods often “have unnaturally high levels of both carbohydrates and fat.” When we eat these foods, we get a quick “hit” of carbs and fats that give the brain a boost. That makes us want to eat them again and again. Thus we become addicted.
“Pay attention to what you eat,” Gearhardt says. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a donut or pizza now and then. But just be sure you’re aware of what you’re eating. When you have a choice, fight back and take control of your health by including foods that nourish your body and brain.
