Four of the World’s Natural Disasters
The following four natural disasters destroyed cities and communities around the world. By flood, typhoon, or earthquake, these events have altogether taken millions of human lives.
Yangtze River Flood
The major flood of 1931 covered tens of thousands of square miles, flooding rice fields and many cities, including Nanjing and Wuhan. The flood influenced more than 50 million people. Government organizations, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, estimated (估计) that about 3.7 million people died in this disaster.
Typhoon Nina
Typhoon Nina struck Henan province of China in August 1975. The typhoon caused a serious dam (水坝) failure, and more than 150,000 people were dead or injured. According to reports, at least 26, 000 people died in the floods. About 145,000 people died from diseases caused by water pollution and famine (饥荒) . The number of people influenced by the disaster was more than 10,000,000.

Last weekend, I took my 4-year-old grandson Oliver to the park. He had been pestering (纠缠) me to take him to the park to watch the ducks in the pond; I finally realized his wish. I went in thinking I’d be the teacher to teach him about the ducks, but that day, Oliver ended up teaching me more.
He had no goals. 4-year-olds don’t need goals. As soon as we stepped 50 feet into the park, Oliver looked up at the sky, where big soft clouds moved slowly. He stood still, smiling, and found real joy in watching them. I’d long forgotten clouds’ magic: My mind was filled with things to do, but watching their slow movement could be soothing and reduce my worries and nervousness. Next, Oliver focused on the big trees, laughing as their branches shook in the wind. When a small bird jumped on the grass, he ran after it, laughing as though it were the funniest thing in the world. In that moment, nothing else mattered to him.
His curiosity never disappeared, especially when it came to fallen leaves. He hunted for them, big and small, treating each one like a treasure. He only saw them as tools for play. No screens or toys were needed. Nearby, kids played with their parents, and dog walkers passed by. Oliver waved at everyone, holding out his hand for high fives with 4-and 5-year-olds, who smiled and said hi back. His mix of real words and kid talk didn’t stop him — he just wanted to connect, without judgment, or fear.
The biggest lesson hit me then: live in the moment. He never asked the time, when we’d leave, or what would be next. Whether he was running after sticks, petting a dog, or running across the grass, he was entirely in the moment. That hour with Oliver reminded me of the wonder we lose as adults, and of many things we can learn from a child’s simple, unplanned joy.
4. Why did the author take Oliver to the park
A. To clean the park. B. To feed the ducks.
C. To act as a teacher. D. To watch the ducks.
5. What does the underlined word “soothing” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Dangerous. B. Confusing. C. Comforting. D. Changeable.
6. What do we know about Oliver from paragraph 3
A. He was afraid of meeting people.
B. He had fun playing toys in the park.
C. He had a strong curiosity about fallen leaves.
D He didn’t get along well with other children in the park.
7. What can we learn from the text
A. Knowledge is power. B. Now is all that counts.
C. Friendship comes from getting together. D. Nothing is more important than education.

Music has long been recognized for its healing powers, and when combined with artificial intelligence, this potential becomes even more precise and accessible. This view, shared by Li Xiaonuo, vice-dean of the Research Institute of Music and Art at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, was widely discussed throughout the recent World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai.
Among the event’s many technological highlights, the globally first shown AI music therapy pod (疗愈舱) from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music stood out, offering a peaceful, personalized healing experience.
Inside the pod, users are equipped with monitoring devices, such as EEG(electroencephalogram) headsets, HRV (heart rate variability) sensors, and conductive nail monitors. Sitting back in zero-gravity chairs, they observe a large screen displaying real-time EEG data alongside vital signs, such as heart rate and blood oxygen levels. Meanwhile, ambient music featuring the natural sounds of chirping birds or flowing streams envelops them, providing a peaceful escape from the outside world.
Ren Shihong, a postdoctoral researcher in artificial intelligence music generation at the conservatory, explains that the experience begins with a personalized questionnaire. Users provide details about their health status and birth date, which, combined with real-time physiological data, drive an AI music generation model to create a multisensory experience complete with visuals that are matched to the music. After the session, users receive a data set of their therapy process and recommended list of music. “The system enhances attention, aids in healing and relaxation, and helps keep heart rate steady,” says Liu Hao, director of the AIMT Lab at the conservatory.
Li says: “The music therapy pod is a product of the combination of technology and art.” The college’s music aesthetic psychology experimental center, established in 2017 and now part of the AIMT Lab, has published numerous Scientific Citation Index papers, laying the groundwork for the therapy pod. Research into changing brainwaves into sound began in the late 20th century. Each person’s resting brainwaves are unique and can be transformed into sound waves through algorithms ( 算法), Li explains. AI’s role in this field is crucial, as it enables the rapid finding of personal trait patterns and generates soundscapes ( 声 景 ) based on real-time physiological indicators (生理指标).
“People’s responses to sound have similarities and individual differences, involving high-level evaluative memory, conditioned reflex memory, and personal musical-cultural experiences — all part of high-level music cognition,” Li points out, emphasizing the need for massive data computing, which AI provides. The goal is to use AI’s power to reach even extremely advanced computing.
8. (原创)Which devices are used in the pod to collect information about the user’s body
A. Cameras and voice recorders. B. A thermometer and a blood pressure cuff.
C. EEG headsets and HRV sensors. D. Motion sensors and fingerprint scanners.
9. (原创)What does the system give users after each session
A. A free music album.
B A report of their session data and a personal music plan.
C. A certificate for completing the therapy.
D. A new AI device to take home.
10. (原创)What does Li Xiaonuo think about the music therapy pod
A. It is too expensive to be useful.
B. It is a good example of technology and art working together.
C. It should only be used in hospitals.
D. It is mainly for entertainment, not real therapy.
11. (原创)What is the main idea of the passage
A. A new kind of music classroom has been built in Shanghai.
B. AI is being used to create a new, personalized form of music therapy.
C. Scientists have invented a chair that can help people sleep better.
D. A conference showed many different types of new computers.

Rock climbing may seem like a sport filled with dangers But experts say it offers participants many physical and mental health benefits that aren’t always found in other sports.
Climbing as a sport became popular in the 1980s, with the nation’s first indoor climbing gym opening in Seattle. Over 10 million Americans had participated in climbing by 2020, and sport climbing appeared the following year at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. And more people are climbing than ever — thanks to hot movies such as Free Solo and The Dawn Wall. Today, there are over 500 indoor climbing walls in the United States.
Rock climbing attracts many people as an excellent sport. As a full-body exercise that includes a lot of pulling, pushing and lifting, rock climbing helps build muscle strength. What’s more, the more you climb, the better your balance is. “Climbing helps you be aware of your body and improves the way you move your body,” said Nick Wilkes, owner and head instructor at Devils Lake Climbing Guides, a guide service in Madison, Wisconsin.
Many of rock climbing’s skills lie in determining and remembering your climbing route in advance. You also need to solve problems on the fly, changing your route if you meet with unexpected difficulties.
People prefer rock climbing partly because of the teamwork and safety support involved in the process, especially in roped climbing. Roped climbers have a partner on the ground called a belayer (保护者), who handles the rope through a device to manage the force, catch any falls and lower the climber. Throughout a climb, the two must continuously communicate about such concerns as desired rope force, when the climber wants to rest and when it’s time to come down.
“In order for me to be a better climber, I have to communicate clearly with the person belaying me so he knows how I’m feeling, when I need a break or if I want to change the climb in any way,” said Lindsay Wendt, fitness trainer of Atlanta-based Break Free Fitness.
12. Why are more people climbing today
A. Its appearance as an Olympic sport.
B. The mental and physical health benefits.
C. The inspiration from popular movies about climbing.
D. The opening of the first indoor climbing gym in Seattle.
13. What is Nick Wilkes’ attitude towards rock climbing
A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
14. Why do roped climbers communicate with their belayers continuously
A. To record the climbing process. B. To show off their climbing skills.
C. To ensure the safety of the climber. D. To avoid unexpected difficulties on the route.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To describe the history of climbing. B. To stress the basic rules of climbing.
C. To show the dangers of rock climbing. D. To explain the popularity of rock climbing.
