There's no better way to better understand a foreign culture than through one of its festivals. Here are some interesting festivals in the world.
La Tomatina (Spain)
Last Wednesday of August
This “largest food fight in the world” is believed to have been started with a tomato—but it certainly didn't end with just one. Now, more than 50,000 people pack the streets of Bu ol, Spain, armed with cheap tomatoes, ready to throw them at friends and strangers alike. Gloves and safety glasses are suggested as the battle can get quite heated, even though it lasts just an hour. While past years allowed anyone and everyone to take part, the large number of attendees pushed town officials to require tickets.
National Beer Day (Iceland)
March 1
It's no secret that Icelanders are fond of partying. After all, when there are days when the sun won't stop shining, it makes sense to throw back a few to celebrate. However, it wasn't that long ago (1989) that Iceland was still under a form of prohibition(禁令) and unable to sell beer. When the laws were passed to make beer legal on March 1,1989, Icelanders were excited and have since celebrated National Beer Day each March 1 with pub dances and other celebrations that last until the early hours of the morning. Beer has since become the most popular drink in the country.
Monkey Banquet(盛宴) (Thailand)
Last Sunday in November
If you've ever come in close contact with monkeys, you know that they're often a bit troublesome, taking a sandwich from your hand without warning or breaking into your hotel minibar if you forget to lock the doors (true story). However, in 1989, in Lopburi, Thailand, a local innkeeper decided to feed the monkeys a banquet as they're also believed to bring good luck. Thus, a tradition was born and the banquet has grown each year. As the monkeys run into the banquet, they soon get a bit excited and start dancing on the tables and throwing food. For visitors, it's a highly enjoyable sight—just be sure to wear clothes that you don't mind being decorated by the monkeys.
21.Why did Icelanders start National Beer Day
A.To enjoy the sunshine.
B.To remember the period.
C.To celebrate the legality of beer selling.
D.To appreciate beer as the most popular drink.
22.What's the purpose of the Monkey Banquet held at first
A.To attract visitors.
B.To gain good luck.
C.To feed monkeys.
D.To enjoy a joyful sight.
23.If a tourist plans to experience a festival in summer, which one is suitable

For decades, Jean Moffatt has been reaching out over the airwaves. As an amateur(业余的) radio operator, Moffatt has connected with people worldwide. “By sending signals to satellites, I've talked to people from the Arctic to the Antarctic,” Moffatt said. And on Wednesday at the Ontario Science Centre, the 96-year-old got to go even further.
An amateur radio connection allowed the senior and students to speak with Commander Luca aboard the International Space Station. By connection, Moffatt told the astronaut she was very excited, admitting that this was a bucket-list wish she had for many years. Then Moffatt asked if Luca could keep the space station clean and tidy, adding that as a “mature woman” she had done lots of cleaning in her life.
When Moffatt was a young girl, she moved to Toronto with her family, hoping there would be chances for a girl interested in science. She desperately wanted to go to university, but moving house placed a significant burden on their finances. Not discouraged, she took a course in amateur radio, then a popular technology, and shortly after she got her license. After retiring, Moffatt started volunteering at the Ontario Science Centre. Armed with her radio license, she helped set up the centre's first radio shack(无线电设备室).
The idea to connect with the International Space Station came just after Moffatt's 96th birthday. Finally with the help of amateur radio operators and NASA, Moffatt made her connection. While the connection wasn't very clear, she was moved to tears, telling those who had gathered to watch that it was the “highlight” of her life.
Moffatt plans to keep volunteering at the centre, introducing younger people to the older form of technology, and to keep speaking to anyone who can pick up her signal. “It's a technology even older than me and I love amateur radio,” Moffatt added.

Eating out in the United States is not much different than eating out in other parts of the world. There are still fast-food chains such as McDonald's and KFC for those hamburgers. However, what makes the restaurants in the US unique is that there is a cultural diversity of restaurants serving food from almost every part of the world. When you arrive in Irvine, and travel around the city, you will find many restaurants of many different cultures, ranging from Europe to the Middle East and Asia. So, when you first arrive, there are always restaurants close by that offer the food you prefer.
Now how do you find those restaurants and know if they are good or not The most common way is through the Internet. In the US, most restaurants can be found through a smartphone app called Yelp. It is a commonly used search engine for restaurants and it is very convenient to use! All you need is to enter the cuisine you want such as “Indian, Sichuan, Sushi, Vegetarian, etc.” In addition, each restaurant on there is also rated and reviewed by some of their past customers. At some restaurants, you can also sign up for the waiting list through the app to economize on time!
If you don't have time to go out and eat, there are food delivery services available. Traditionally, pizza is the most common food for delivery. Some delivery services you can try are DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Postmates. All you would need to do is just open a free account, select the restaurants on their webpage, order from the menu, and enter your address to have the food delivered to your home. They usually have a delivery discount the first time you sign up for an account, so be sure to take advantage of that!
28.What sets restaurants in the United States apart from other parts of the world
A.The use of Internet apps for ordering food.

C.The presence of fast-food chains like McDonald's and KFC.
D.The availability of a wide range of cultural diversity in food options.
29.What is the most common way for visitors to find restaurants serving their preferred cuisine
A.By exploring the city on foot.
B.By asking the locals for recommendations.
C.By using the Yelp app to search for specific cuisines.
D.By checking in at their hotel for a list of nearby restaurants.
30.What do the underlined words “economize on” mean in the second paragraph
A.Save. B.Spend.
C.Kill. D.Waste.
31.How do food delivery services in the US attract new customers
A.By offering a wide range of food options.
B.By providing free delivery for all orders.
C.By allowing customers to order through smartphone apps.
D.By offering delivery discounts to first-time account sign-ups.

Every time AI drafts an e-mail or an image, the planet pays for it. Making two images can consume as much energy as charging a smartphone. By 2027, the global AI industry could annually consume as much electricity as the Netherlands. And a new study identifies another concern: generative AI applications alone could add 1.2 million to five million tons of this harmful trash to the planet by 2030.
Such a contribution will add to tens of millions of tons of electronic products the globe abandons annually. Cellphones, computers and other digital products often contain mercury(汞), lead or other poisons. When improperly disposed of, they can pollute air, water and soil. In 2022, about 78% of the world's e-waste ends up in landfills or at unofficial recycling sites, where laborers risk their health to clean up rare metals.
The AI boom rapidly consumes data storage devices and high-performance components, which are usually replaced when new versions are available. To calculate the e-waste contribution, researchers examined the hardware use, lifespan, and the industry's growth rate. Their prediction is an estimate that could change based on various factors.
This study's biggest value comes from its attention to AI's broad environmental impacts, says Shaolei Ren, a researcher at the University of California, Riverside. “We might want AI companies to slow down a bit,” he says.
Few countries mandate(强制执行) the proper disposal of e-waste, and those that do often fail to carry out their existing laws on it. Twenty-five U.S. states have e-waste management policies, but there is no federal law that requires electronics to be recycled.
Thankfully, some companies claim to be taking independent action. Microsoft and Google have committed to reaching net zero waste and net zero emissions respectively by 2030. They have many options to limit e-waste. It's possible to squeeze more life out of servers, for instance, through regular maintenance and updates or by shifting worn-out devices to less-intensive applications. These strategies are vital to reducing e-waste and benefit society, the study authors estimate.
32.What can be inferred from paragraph 1
A.The Netherlands consumes too much electricity.
B.The disadvantages of AI outweigh the advantages.
C.The environmental footprint of AI is alarmingly extensive.
D.AI's energy-related issues largely result from image-making.
33.What is Shaolei Ren's attitude toward the growth of AI companies
A.Critical. B.Cautious.
C.Positive. D.Ambiguous.
34.What is the key to reducing e-waste
A.Prioritizing smartphone recycling.
B.Adjusting AI application frequency.
C.Banning the overuse of AI completely.
D.Adopting device-lifespan-extending measures.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.AI May Worsen the E-waste Crisis
B.E-waste Calls for Proper Use of AI
C.AI Is Mostly to Blame for E-waste
D.AI and E-waste Always Go Hand in Hand

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You're probably used to hearing the same old advice when it comes to saving money: stop eating out and learn how to bargain. These ideas for saving money will definitely help, but they are far from your only options. 36
Break up with name brands.
If you've been supporting a particular brand of ketchup, beans or other commercial goods, it may be time to branch out. Store brands or private labels can be just as good as big-name brands. 37 Some store-brand products are made by the same manufacturer(制造商) as the bigger-name brands. In that case, you're literally just paying more for a label.
38
Buying secondhand things at online stores is a great way to save money, especially if you have kids, since they outgrow things so quickly. But kids' clothes aren't the only things you should be buying. Consider seeking secondhand sports equipment, cars, furniture, toys and bikes.
Invest in reusable items.
We all love the convenience of disposable(一次性的) things. 39 For instance, rather than use a paper towel to clean surfaces, use a kitchen towel that can be washed and reused.
Wait 30 days before making that impulse purchase(冲动购买).
Do you need it, or do you want it We've all come across that item online that is screaming our name. But rather than make that impulse purchase, give yourself 30 days to think it over. If you forget all about it in that time period, then you really don't need (or want) it that badly. 40
A.Buy your kids secondhand products.
B.Discover the joy of secondhand things.
C.In fact, they may actually be the same thing.
D.The price reflects the quality of the products.
E.If you can't stop thinking about it, then go ahead and buy it.

April has been a vet(兽医) for many years. Throughout her practice, there have been many unusual cases. Some were quite sad and some were even funny. But most of all she remembered one time on a rainy day a little girl came to her with her little guinea pig(豚鼠).
She was in tears and asked April to save her beloved pet. “This is my only friend. I really love my Dorothy,” the girl said. April examined the animal and realized that it was very ill. The guinea pig looked young. Probably, it was already sick when it was sold to the girl. The vet saw many children's tears, and each time she felt awful. But she always found strength to say that she couldn't save the pet.
However, this time she looked at the girl and couldn't say anything. April saw how simply the girl was dressed and thought that her family didn't make a lot of money. Therefore, the guinea pig wasn't just a pet for her, but a real treasure. “Tell me your phone number, so I can call you after the operation,” April said. “I'll give you my grandmother's phone number, because I live with her. My parents were gone. Grandma said that they had gone somewhere far and would stay there for a long time. By the way, they gave me the guinea pig before leaving,” the girl said.
April wrote down the number, and when the girl left the clinic, she burst into tears. She realized her parents had died and the girl didn't know the truth yet. How could she tell her that her guinea pig was going to die April looked at the animal helplessly and wondered what she could do. Suddenly she came up with an idea. But before doing it she put the guinea pig to sleep, and went to the nearest pet store during lunchtime. She wanted to buy exactly the same guinea pig and give it to the girl.

One possible version:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Knowing that the school English newspaper is looking for an editor responsible for the column “Traditional Chinese Culture”, I'm writing to apply for the position.
I think I'm qualified for it. To begin with, I have a good command of English, especially written English. Besides, I have taken the part-time job as an English editor, from which I have gained relevant experience. More importantly, I have a rich knowledge of traditional Chinese culture.
I would really appreciate it if I could be given the precious chance. I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
However, finding it wasn't so easy. The sick pet was black with a white spot on the nose, which was uniquely uncommon. Her attempt to find a similar one nearby in vain, a flush of disappointment swept over April. However, at the thought of the girl's misty eyes, April continuously went to extraordinary lengths to find a matching guinea pig. Fortunately, her persistent efforts paid off. In a store 8 kilometers away from her clinic, she found an identical guinea pig. Hardly had she returned to the clinic when she called the girl, “Honey, good news for you. Dorothy has pulled through and you can take her home!” On hearing the news, the girl hurried to the pet store with her grandmother.
Her grandmother understood everything, but the girl didn't notice the switch. Eyes twinkling with excitement, tears of joy streamed down her cheeks. Meanwhile, Grandma directed a meaningful look at April, a great sense of gratitude flowing in her aged eyes, saying tearfully, “My dear doctor, you've really saved Dorothy and also protected her owner's sunshine.” With her hands held tightly by Grandma, April truly realized a tiny gesture of kindness may brighten up someone's life. Roses given, fragrance in hand. With her heart lightening up with happiness, April was determined to keep kindness alive in her clinic and guard everyone's “Dorothy”.
