When living or travelling internationally, we notice the differences between cultures before seeing the similarities. At first, some differences are easy to spot. Over time, however, there are some curious similarities between how people in the UK and China communicate. Indeed, international residents in both countries often complain about having to read what local people really mean, because it often differs from what is said.
In the UK, outsiders often get confused when they realise that a person making rude comments is actually showing love. In situations like this, context is everything. Likewise, in China, outsiders must infer most meaning from context and from what is not said, rather than from what is said. Otherwise, misunderstandings occur.
The UK and China contexts share further cultural features, which greatly influence how people communicate, including the cultural trait(特点) of non-conflict. The British will do everything to avoid conflict. They will probably tell the waiter that it is lovely even when served poor quality food. This cultural trait can cause major misunderstandings. For example, a British business partner who is deeply unhappy with your proposal will probably say “there are just a couple of small concerns,” rather than telling you that the entire proposal is unsatisfactory.
Chinese communication shows very similar conflict prevention. Often challenges, errors, mistakes, or problems remain complete taboos(禁忌) as topics for discussion, even though everyone knows of their existence. Instead, people talk about working towards further goals or objectives, rather than directly admit that the current situation is far from satisfactory. Likewise, Chinese people like to keep a sense of harmony within all environments, and so avoid open criticism of each other. This is very similar to the way that a British person might tell you a colleague “is very confident” rather than that he is rude. In this sense, the British and the Chinese can appreciate each other in harmony.
1.What does the author suggest in paragraph 2
A.Polite comments are encouraged.
B.Learning what is not said is difficult.
C.Context is important in communication.
D.Misunderstandings often happen among outsiders.
2.What will the British and the Chinese probably both agree with
A.Talking about taboos in discussions.
B.Preventing misunderstandings in work.
C.Avoiding discussing one's mistakes in public.
D.Making use of cultural traits in communication.
3.How does the author develop this passage
A.By using figures. B.By making comparisons.
C.By listing reasons. D.By making classifications.
4.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage
A.Cultural Differences Between the UK and China
B.Avoiding Conflict: British Communication Styles

London is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the world. 1 Although there are similarities between London and some cities of America, don't expect them to be the same. If you are an American in London seeking advice to help you adjust to the new environment, you are fortunate to read this article.
2 It's really something that may make you fall out of love with this super magical city. Depending on which American state you live in, just like other big cities, the cost of living in London is one of the highest. It is one of the top complaints of people who just moved to London from the US, mostly if they came from smaller states.
Preparing your pocket to absorb the shock you will receive is not enough. Just like when in Rome, do as the Romans do, when you go to London, behave like the Londoners. 3 Let's say you left your coat on the chair after dinner. A Londoner will say your coat is on the chair instead of telling you to pick it up. When you hear things like this, don't be surprised, but live your life like them. 4
The last one is a seemingly odd one: learn to understand English. Don't be surprised that you will not understand some of the things the Englishmen are saying. It is not because you don't understand the language. 5 The names we call some common things also differ from theirs. To escape being lost when speaking with most Londoners, prepare yourself to relearn English you already know.
A.The reason is their accents.
B.This way, you will not be left out.
C.Don't forget where you come from.
D.To start with, prepare for the high cost of living.
E.That's why we should avoid saying things in a direct manner.
F.However, for an American, living in this city comes with a price.
G.For instance, in London, people don't ask anyone to do something directly.

Lin Wei is a quiet high school student from a small town in Hunan Province, China. Her secret passion was traditional Chinese dance. But she lacked confidence, always feeling awkward and out of place. The only person who truly understood her was Mei, her classmate and friend. Mei, with her outgoing personality, had a deep appreciation of diverse arts and cultures, and often spoke of how art could connect people across boundaries.
One day, Mei excitedly told Lin Wei about an opportunity: a cultural exchange program in Brazil during the carnival season. The program was looking for students to showcase their talents and share their cultural heritage. Mei, a talented singer of traditional Chinese folk songs, was already planning to try out. “Lin Wei, you should come too!” she urged. “Your traditional Chinese dance is beautiful! It would be a perfect way to share our culture.”
Lin Wei hesitated. The thought of performing in front of a large audience, especially in a foreign country, terrified her. She imagined herself stumbling, forgetting the steps, and being laughed at. “What if they don't understand my dance What if it's too different ” These thoughts went around in her mind. But Mei didn't give up. She helped Lin Wei choose a beautiful piece of traditional Chinese music, helped her find a flowing silk suit with wide sleeves, and even practiced with her, offering encouragement and support, focusing on expressing the emotions behind the movements. She reminded Lin Wei of how art, even without words, could tell stories and touch hearts. Slowly, Lin Wei's worry began to give way to a flicker of excitement.
Arriving in Rio, Lin Wei was overwhelmed by the carnival's explosion of color and energy. She felt a wave of panic. The confidence she'd built with Mei began to fall apart. The dazzling samba dancers, their movements so fluid and powerful, made her doubt herself even more. “Could my quiet, subtle movements ever find a place here ” She held Mei's hand tightly, feeling small and insignificant.
Their first performance was scheduled for the next day. Lin Wei spent the evening in her hotel room, practicing her dance routine, but her heart wasn't in it. The fear was back, stronger than ever. She looked at her reflection, seeing a scared girl, not a confident performer.
The next morning, Lin Wei was shaking backstage as she prepared for her performance.
Then something unexpected happened.

根据第四段第一句“Chinese communication shows very similar conflict prevention.”

根据本段最后两句“Depending on which American state you live in...mostly if they came from smaller states.”
5.A 细节句。根据上文“It is not because you don't understand the language.” 故选A。

One possible version:
The next morning, Lin Wei was shaking backstage as she prepared for her performance. Her fingers nervously adjusted the silk costume, while her mind was filled with doubts. How could her subtle Chinese dance impress an audience captivated by Brazil's vibrant rhythms Noticing her anxiety, Mei approached. “Remember who you are,” Mei whispered encouragingly. As Lin Wei stepped onto the brightly lit stage, her heart pounding against her chest, she recalled the peaceful mountains of Hunan and her grandmother's gentle guidance. Taking a deep breath, she began her dance, her movements initially hesitant but gradually flowing like water as the ancient melody filled the air.
Then something unexpected happened. The restless audience, who had been chatting moments before, fell completely silent. Their eyes followed her graceful gestures with growing fascination, captivated by the quiet power of her traditional art form. When she finished, thunderous applause erupted, surprising Lin Wei completely. A Brazilian dancer later approached her, admiration in her eyes. “Your performance taught me that true cultural expression doesn't need to shout to be heard,” she said warmly. That evening, surrounded by new friends from across the globe, Lin Wei finally understood that her heritage wasn't something to hide but her greatest strength—a unique voice in the world's beautiful chorus of diverse traditions.
