One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem — inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle (比格犬), the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. But one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
Years later, my mother was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.
24. Why did the author’s mother order him to borrow a book
A. Because the public library was near
B. Because the author was a lazy student.
C. Because borrowing books was cheaper.
D. Because she wanted to cure his problem.
25. What can we learn about the author’s dog
A. Its name was Amos. B. It was one of his favorite pets.
C. It was adopted by someone else. D. It was secretly stolen from him.
26. What was the function of the book the author borrowed from the library
A. It opened a door to his reading.
B. It reminded him of his childhood.
C. It proved his mother was wrong.
D. It improved his imagination.
27. Which one could be the best title of the passage
A. Mum’s Strict Order B. The Charm of a Book
C. Reunion with My Beagle: D. My Passion for Reading
C
An ice bath or cold plunge typically involves putting yourself into very cold water. Ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates all praised the benefits of cold water in helping keep healthy. “This has been around for a really long time,” says Dr. Georgine Nanos, a family physician.
“But research shows that the effectiveness of ice baths depends on their intended purpose. Especially for starters, moderation(适度) is key,” Nanos says. “Getting colder is possible, but you need to be extra careful. Cold plunges aren’t for everyone, especially those with some possible diseases.”
From a scientific standpoint, cold water exposure (接触) brings about a series of changes in the body. It can help you stay more awake. What’s more, cold water makes your body create heat. This temporarily raises your metabolism (新陈代谢), which some believe could help lose weight. That’s the scientific idea, but the evidence for that should be explored more,” Nanos explains.
So, how do those physiological changes actually help us Healthcare providers and experts have mostly depended on small clinical studies or observational data to support the potential health benefits of cold-water immersion (浸泡). But now, experts are doing more well-rounded reviews of all the research to learn more about this popular practice. Even so, everyone agrees we need more studies to understand its effects fully.
A 2025 review found no immediate reduction in stress following an ice bath. However, there were improvements in sleep quality and overall quality of life, although no significant changes in mood were observed. A 2023 review found that an ice plunge can help reduce muscle soreness and tiredness immediately after exercise. And they also found that time in freezing water could reduce so-called explosive performance—such as the ability to jump high—immediately after getting out of cold water.
So, the bottom line: if you enjoy an ice bath and experience benefits, go for it. “And if it makes you feel awful, stop,” Ethan Smith, another physician, advises. “However, if the cold water calls to you, dive in.”
28. Why are ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To show cold water has long been used for health.
B. To argue ice baths were more widely used in ancient times.
C. To prove ice baths are the most effective way to treat diseases.
D. To compare their views on cold water with modern scientific research.
29. What does Nanos consider important for beginners of ice baths
A. Avoiding the coldest water at first. B. Keeping the practice reasonable.
C. Turning to healthcare providers for help. D. Doing ice baths every day to develop a habit.
30. What is one possible influence of cold-water exposure according to some people
A. It cures certain diseases. B. It slows one’s blood flow.
C. It helps people slim down. D. It improves one’s ability to jump high.
31. What is Ethan’s suggestion regarding ice baths
A. They should be taken on a regular basis.
B. They are only suitable for those who have no health problems.
C. Everyone should try them at least once to experience benefits.
D. One should decide whether to do them based on their own feelings.

Having a hobby can greatly enrich a teenager’s life. Hobbies can increase physical activity and social interaction, provide stress relief, teach valuable skills, and of course be a lot of fun! However, many teens are unwilling to try a hobby. So you need to use some insight and gentle guidance to help your teens to explore their interests and find their perfect hobby.
Ask your teens what makes them feel good about themselves. One way to help a teenager find a hobby is to pay attention to their strengths and what makes them feel good. Many teens may only focus on weaknesses or things they have failed in. Instead, emphasize anything that they enjoy doing or that makes them happy. A person doesn’t have to be good at a hobby to enjoy it. Hobbies aren’t necessarily talents. As long as they feel good while doing it, it can turn into a hobby.
Ask your teens what they want to do. Maybe your teen has been wanting to try something for a long time but has been unsure if you would agree to it. However, you might just get a shrug (耸肩) in response. That is normal. Asking “What do you want to do ” is a pretty vague (模糊的) and broad question. Tell your teens to think about it, and then ask them about it later.
Determine if your teen has already taken part in hobbies. Teenagers spend much of their life away from the eyes of parents and don’t always offer up information. As a result, sometimes adults are not entirely aware that teens are developing hobbies. Your child may be developing hobbies away from home, so you may not have to encourage them to take up new ones. Instead, you can support their present hobbies.
32. What can you do if your teens are uninterested in developing a hobby
A. You can compare them with other kids with hobbies.
B. You can have a talk with them and give some guidance.
C. You can tell them how perfect a person is if he has a hobby.
D. You can provide them with money to explore their interests.
33. What plays a deciding role in developing a hobby
A. value. B. success. C. enjoyment. D. Talent.
34. Why are some parents unaware of their children’s hobbies
A. They are too busy to talk to the children.
B. They are not able to understand teens’ world.
C. The children are too shy to share their ideas.
D. The children don’t talk about this with them.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Some Helpful Guidance for Teens
B. Help Your Teen to Find the Perfect Hobby
C. A Dialogue between Parents and Children
D. Having a Hobby Is Important to Everyone

Four People You Should Surround Yourself with Daily
If you are someone who believes in the philosophy “company matters”, then you must choose the people in your life, very wisely. Often, the people we keep as a company either make us better or ruin our chances of being a better version of ourselves. 36 Below are some people you should surround yourself with:
The doers
You must have planned lots of things in your head, and you could have even written them down. However, the question is whether you have executed them In most cases, the answer is no. That is because you lack doers in your life. 37 Such people are not afraid to risk it all; they are go-getters. So, if you find someone who is a doer, keep them.
The good listeners
It’s very hard to find them, but they certainly exist. Life nowadays is troublesome and we can solve half our problems by just talking it out. But the problem is that people today are so self-engrossed that they hardly want to know what’s happening in others’ lives, and that’s why you need a therapist to hear you out. 38
The honest ones
At times, you need people who are brutally honest around you. 39 These people won’t criticize you, but they will give you a better perspective. It is not okay to have only people who are unwilling, to be honest with you, for reasons such as losing your friendship. You will keep making mistakes.
The cheerleaders
We are referring to all those out there, who cheer the loudest on your achievements. Of course, your family is going to be the happiest or not, but look around you to understand the ones who are genuinely happy for your success. 40 They send opportunities to your way and applaud the loudest when you make it big.
A. Live life in the presence of nature, take breaks from work and studying, and be happy, be wild, be adventurous.
B. Hence, it is important to be very selective of the people you let in your space.
C. These sets of people will never push you downhill.
D. If they had been there, you would have done what you had always planned to do.
E. If you find someone willing to listen to your rants without being judgemental, hold on to them.
F. When your friends meet with trouble, you should lend them a hand right away.
G. It might sound harsh, but they help you make the right choices in your life.

Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the 46 of it! When I first started 47 the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much 48 what I was doing. Sometimes I’d get

I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the rules and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and motivating. Very soon the competitive 52 in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the 53 I never had so much fun!
With my 54 self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone from “ 55 ” in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, to raising my hand—even when I sometimes wasn’t 100 percent sure I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in myself.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised prizes for those who get score 100. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well-prepared for the test.”
Peter carefully checked the spelling of each word when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote the word on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am going to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent in the spelling test.”
Mr. White praised them: He gave each of the three students a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked most. Peter was so excited that he held it high as his classmates cheered. “This is making me so happy,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White had given the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter compared it to the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelt it wrong.
“What should I do ” Peter said to himself. “I want my classmates to think I’m a master of spelling. If I tell Mr. White I got one wrong; I’ll have to give my prize back or I will tell a lie.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

21. D. A knowledge of the routine work of the UN.
Learn about how the United Nations addresses issues such as climate change, peace and security, human rights, and how you can support the Sustainable Development Goals.(了解联合国如何处理气候变化、和平与安全、人权等问题,以及如何支持可持续发展目标。)
选项A错误:第一段明确提到可以参观三个会议厅:the Security Council Chamber, the Trusteeship Council Chamber, and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Chamber,而不是四个。
Learn about how the United Nations addresses issues such as climate change(了解联合国如何处理气候变化等问题),是了解议题,而不是为项目design(设计)。
22. B. registering online before arrival.
Register Online: All visitors to United Nations Headquarters must register on the United Nations Security Website prior to arrival.
All visitors aged 16 and older must bring a valid, original, government-issued photo ID(16岁及以上的游客必须携带有效身份证件)和For security reasons, children under 5 years of age are not permitted on tour.(出于安全考虑,5岁以下儿童不允许参加参观。)
Only original, physical IDs are accepted (no photocopies or digital images).
23. C. $75.
根据Hours of operation部分Adults: $29.00 / Child (Ages 5-12): $17.00,29+29+17=75。
24. D. Because she wanted to cure his problem.
This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem — inability to read.(这是她用来击败我的奇怪问题——无法阅读的又一件武器。)
选项D的cure his problem”(治好他的问题)是对defeat my strange problem — inability to read最准确的同义转述。
25. C. It was adopted by someone else.
But one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him.(但一天早上,它不见了,被送给了一个有空间和金钱来照顾它的人。)
选项C的was adopted by someone else(被别人收养了)是对此信息的准确概括。
26. A. It opened a door to his reading.
I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.(我突然意识到:我读了一本书,而且我很喜欢读这本书。
选项A的opened a door to his reading(为他打开了阅读的大门)形象地概括了这一开创性的作用。
27. B. The Charm of a Book
Books could be incredibly wonderful和最后一段The power of the words has held点明书籍的力量。选项B. The Charm of a Book(一本书的魅力)最能体现书籍改变作者命运的主题。
28. A. To show cold water has long been used for health.
Ancient Egyptians and Hippocrates all praised the benefits of cold water in helping keep healthy. “This has been around for a really long time,” says Dr. Georgine Nanos, a family physician.(古埃及人和希波克拉底都称赞冷水有助于保持健康。
This has been around for a really long time(这已经存在了很长时间了)。
29. B. Keeping the practice reasonable.
Especially for starters, moderation is key,” Nanos says.(“……尤其是对初学者来说,适度是关键,”Nanos说)
第二段直接引用了Nanos对初学者的建议。她明确指出Especially for starters, moderation is key(特别是对初学者来说,适度是关键)。 B. Keeping the practice reasonable.(保持练习的合理性/适度)是对moderation is key最准确的同义转述。
30. C. It helps people slim down.
This temporarily raises your metabolism, which some believe could help lose weight.(这可以暂时提高你的新陈代谢,一些人认为这有助于减肥。)
随后Nanos解释which some believe could help lose weight(其中一些人认为这可能有助于减肥)。C. It helps people slim down.(帮助人们瘦身)是对help lose weight的同义替换。
31. D. One should decide whether to do them based on their own feelings.
根据末段“And if it makes you feel awful, stop,” Ethan Smith, another physician, advises. “However, if the cold water calls to you, dive in.”(“如果它让你感觉很糟糕,那就停下来,”另一位医生Ethan Smith建议。“但是,如果冷水呼唤你,就跳进水里。”)
最后一段是Ethan Smith医生的建议。他的核心观点是:如果你喜欢冰浴并从中受益,就去做吧。“如果它让你感觉很糟糕,就停止,”……“然而,如果冷水在召唤你,就跳进去吧。”)这些建议完全基于个人的主观感受。选项D. One should decide whether to do them based on their own feelings.

One possible version
Dear Arthur,
I’m writing to ask for your advice. Since I entered the senior high school, I’ve been under great pressure with English reading. The passages are much longer and more difficult, and I find it hard to understand them because of the large number of new words. This situation makes me feel really worried.
Could you please give me some advice on how to enlarge my vocabulary and improve my reading speed Any suggestions on reading skills will also be greatly appreciated.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version
Staring at the “100%” mark written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. He felt happy about the prize but worried about the mistake. The word “contribution” looked wrong on his paper. He remembered how hard he studied and how his classmates cheered for him. If he told Mr. White the truth, he might lose the dictionary and their respect. But if he stayed quiet, he would be dishonest. Peter thought about responsibility, the first word in the test. It meant doing the right thing, even when it was difficult. His heart beat fast as he imagined both choices. The prize felt heavy in his hands, but his mind felt heavier with guilt. He knew honesty was important, but the fear of losing everything made him hesitate. For a moment, he closed his eyes, trying to find courage.
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. Mr. White noticed and asked, “Peter, what is it ” Peter stood up, his voice shaking. “Mr. White, I made a mistake in the test. I spelled ‘contribution’ wrong. It should be c-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-t-i-o-n, not c-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n.” The classroom became quiet. Mr. White checked the word list and nodded. He smiled and said, “Peter, I am proud of you. Honesty is more valuable than a perfect score.” He let Peter keep the dictionary as a reward for his truthfulness. The classmates clapped loudly, and Peter felt a warm happiness inside. He realized that doing the right thing brought real joy, and he would always remember this lesson about responsibility and honesty.
