Addy Barrett, an 11-year-old girl from Maryland, the US, is a regular visitor to the zoo, and never gets tired of watching gorillas. “I really fell in love with these smart animals after reading a book about them, ” Addy said. “I also learned they were being killed for unnecessary reasons. And I knew I needed to do something. ”
Addy is now working to save her favorite animals. She has sold T-shirts and home-made cookies to raise money, and she hosts a party about the gorilla yearly.
Addy asked Meredith Bastian, a zookeeper, about the challenges that wild gorillas are facing and that many people ignore. Bastian said it’s because of habitat loss, climate change and the spread of disease. But there is also the problem of mining. “Some mines in Congo, Africa destroy gorillas’ habitats and make their living conditions worse, ” Bastian told Addy.
Addy decided to start a Gorilla Heroes project. She has held fundraisers hoping to start a conversation on the risks to gorillas. The animals, which are native to Central Africa, are endangered. There are fewer than 900 mountain gorillas and about 100,000 western lowland gorillas in the world. So far, Gorilla Heroes has raised more than $11,000. Addy was recently named a winner of the 2019 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes for her work.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Maybe your friends from middle school are going to a different high school. Even if you know other freshmen (新生), you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upperclassmen (高年级的学生). How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts. It is helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you can also get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something freshmen are probably anxious about. The work in high school builds on what you learned in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more after-school activities than middle school did, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Middle school taught you the basics of academic knowledge, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. High school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
46. According to the passage, when they come to the school on the first day freshmen usually feel ________.
A. proud B. nervous C. excited D. afraid
47. What are freshmen probably worried about
A. The learning task. B. The training in the freshman orientation.
C. The ability to make friends. D. The relationship with teachers.
48. What can be a proper approach when freshmen have difficulties in dealing with some work
A. Attend the Orientation Day. B. Turn to your teachers.
C. Concern your classmates. D. Take part in after-school activities.
49. After-school activities mainly help students ________.
A. build up healthy bodies B. develop friendships
C. develop their interests D. improve their learning ability
50. The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. what you’ll learn in high school
B. what you learned in middle school
C. the difference between middle school and high school
D. the importance of being more independent and responsible

Are you aged between 14 and 19 years old Do you care about your local environment Would you like to help make the area you live in better, cleaner, safer and friendlier If your answers are ‘yes’, ‘yes’ and ‘yes’, then read on! A local organization is carrying out a project, giving money to groups of teenagers who want to become active citizens. Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Meeting the neighbors. Everybody needs good neighbors. Knock on people’s doors and find out what they would like to improve in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don’t want to go round to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighborhood watch. It is very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbor is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer.
Lending a hand. There are often elderly people living in the neighborhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their gardens for them or maybe walk their dogs!
No littering. Nobody likes picking up other people’s rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know, one day you might find something valuable!
Just tell us what you want to do. Then we’ll send you more information.
