Jessica Burks’ home is full of opportunities. Packaged slime (黏土) in a variety of colors and pleasant smells lines one wall of the living room, and, in the designated “slime room” workspace in the back, bottles of fragrance oil are arranged in rows, next to glue and an industrial-size kitchen mixer.
But it’s not the amount of slime in Burks’ house that shocks people, she said. It’s that her 15-year-old daughter, Samantha Zumwalt, is in charge of their enterprise (企业). The mother-daughter team runs Samantha’s Slime Shop at home and the demand for their products helps them earn six figures a year. Samantha’s slime, offered in a rainbow of colors and a range of textures (质地), is in high demand. Since she started her business, she’s made more than 24,000 sales on Etsy. The customers are generally young — between 9 and 12 years old, Burks said, though some adults and teens buy slime, too. Some customers buy Samantha’s slime because they say playing with it is calming. Others want it because it gives them something to do with their hands.
Last year, Nichole Jacklyne, a social media blogger, who reviews slime and provides DIY lessons for hundreds of thousands of followers, reviewed Samantha’s product in a video. After Jacklyne’s video, orders poured into Samantha’s shop, Burks said.
However, Samantha’s mom was initially resistant to the girl’s slime ambitions. It took months for Samantha to convince her mom to buy the key materials to make slime. “I told her no for months,” Burks said. Finally, Burks gave in. She had been laid off from her job as an accountant, and the two dove into the slime business. Now, Burks is proud of Samantha for running the slime business, “I hope she can meet all of her business goals — whether that’s still running the slime enterprise, or buying another business out, or starting a new business,” she said. “Whatever her dreams are... is where I want her to be.”
4. Why does the author specifically describe Jessica Burks’ home in Paragraph 1?
A. To stress the amount of slime there.
B. To introduce Samantha’s slime business.
C. To present how special her home is.
D. To show the business opportunities of slime.
5 What do we know about Samantha’s slime from the text?
A. It only wins popularity with kids.
B. Social media contributes greatly to its sales.
C. All adults buy it just for recreation.
D. It helps Samantha get more followers on the Internet.
6. How does Jessica Burks’ attitude to Samantha’s slime business change?
A. Disapproving→Supportive B. Doubtful→Objective.
C. Worried→Favorable. D. Negative→Cautious.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Playing with slime puts people at ease. B. Samantha promotes her slime online.
C. Samantha’s slime business is a success. D. Jessica Burks quits to run her slime business.

Almost none of us have the time to read everything we’d like to read. Yet we lose countless hours to daily activities that bring us little joy like taking buses and waiting in line. What if we could turn these little blocks of unoccupied time into precious and rewarding moments for learning and reflection?
Founded in 2022,iReader, a micro-learning app on mobile phones, brings the biggest ideas from best-selling books through 15-minute audio (音频) and text. So far, more than 3,000 books have been included, ranging from psychology and parenting to management and economics, with new titles added every day.
iReader is pioneering a new method of reading, with over 9 million users enjoying the benefits already. According to the Pew Research Center (PRC), the British read just 4 paper books a year and over 25% haven’t read a single paper book this year, but reading isn’t dying. There are now more ways for the British to read than ever before, due to the widespread use of e-books and audio books.
The books in iReader are rewritten to ensure it is easy to remember the main content. The way the content is edited has been specifically designed to ensure it is useful in practice. Besides, the content is rewritten with relevant examples in real life, which means users are more likely to remember and apply what is helpful to them.
Holger Seim, German co-founder of this app, declares,“iReader gives you the biggest ideas in the shortest possible time. It transforms great ideas into little, packs you can listen to or read in just 15 minutes.”
8. What does the author suggest people do in the unoccupied time?
A. Write and share B. Read and think.
C. Avoid taking buses. D. Bring joy to daily routines.
9. What can we infer from the PRC findings?
A. The British benefit a lot from reading.
B. Reading methods are more important than before.
C. Digital technology is taking the place of paper books.
D. New forms of books are changing the way the British read.
10. How does iReader make the content easy to remember?
A. By making it useful. B. By bringing fun to it.
C. By using artistic designs. D. By taking users as examples.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. iReader Prevents Reading from Dying B. iReader Unites Worldwide Book-lovers
C. iReader: Big Ideas in Small Packages D. iReader: The Best New App Creation

A 23-year-old British woman has invented a product that she hopes will one day take the place of single-use plastic. The new product is made by combining fishing waste and algae (藻类). Lucy Hughes created the material, called MarinaTex, for her final year project at the University of Sussex. She continued her research after she left the university.
On November 13, the James Dyson Foundation announced that Hughes was the international winner of the 2019 James Dyson Award for design. MarinaTex is edible, meaning it can be eaten without danger. Hughes says it also is strong and stable. But unlike plastic, MarinaTex breaks down in four to six weeks under normal conditions and does not pollute the soil.
The inventor said she is concerned about the growing amounts of plastics in ocean waters. She noted one report that there would be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by the year 2050. The United Nations estimates that 100 million tons of plastic waste has already been left in the oceans. Hughes also was investigating ways to reduce the amount of waste from the fishing industry. The industry produces an estimated 50 million tons of waste worldwide each year, UN officials say. Hughes told Reuters that she was “trying to work out how I could use the waste stream and add value to that waste.” Examining fish parts left over from processing helped to give her the idea for a material that was useful and did not harm the environment.
To create a strong material, Hughes added the molecule chatoyant (猫眼石), which comes from sea creatures like crabs, and agar, a material from red algae. After months of testing, Hughes produced a strong, flexible sheet that forms at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius. Inventor James Dyson said that MarinaTex is “stronger, safer and much more sustainable” than the plastic polyethylene (聚乙烯). It is also easier to break down than other possible replacement products for polyethylene, the material that single-use plastic bags are made of.
Hughes will receive about $41,000 in prize money as the first place winner of the James Dyson Award. She told Reuters that she plans to use the money to better develop the product and ways to mass produce it.
12. When did Lucy Hughes create MarinaTex?
A. After graduation. B. At university.
C. Before going to university. D. After winning the James Dyson Award.
13. What’s true about MarinaTex?
A. It is environmentally friendly. B. It is delicious and cheap.
C. It is a type of plastics. D. It exists for a long time in nature.
14. What helped to give her the idea for MarinaTex?
A. Observing the process of fishing.
B. Studying different parts of a fish.
C. Examining left-over fish parts after cooking.
D. Checking waste from the fishing industry
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Education.
C. Technology. D. Lifestyle.

Mr. Taylor checked again: water, food, bandage, medicines, a compass, and a map wrapped in plastic... Bingo! He put all that he prepared for the coming hiking into his backpack.
Mr. Taylor was fond of hiking, this time in particular, for it was the first time for him to hike with his two sons, Harry and Joel. Joel liked reading books about explorers and Harry joined the hiking club in his school this term. It will be an unforgettable experience, definitely, he whispered to himself unconsciously a smile spreading over his face.
Harry and Joel, however, argued for the first three miles of their hiking trip. Harry accused Joel of wearing smelly old shoes. Joel blamed Harry for using all of the bug spray(喷雾防虫剂).Harry told Joel he smelled terrible. Joel called Harry a coward(懦夫).
“Will the two of you just quiet down and enjoy our hike together?” their father said. "You’re missing all of the beautiful scenery!"
It was true. Neither Joel nor Harry had taken notice of the bear their father had spied at the start of their trip. They hadn’t looked up at the eagle he pointed out overhead. Worst of all they hadn’t paid any attention to the turns and twists along the way while they continued their argument.
“Joel threw a stick at me!” Harry screamed. "That’s not true!” Joel shouted back.
Mr. Taylor could no longer contain his anger. "And both of you need to stop arguing!" he erupted. As he turned to face them, his left foot caught on a root. He slipped backward and down muddy bank, falling into the river that ran alongside the path,
Harry and Joel raced to their father’s assistance. They helped him up out of the water, and then dragged his wet backpack up onto land.
Fortunately, their wet-through father found himself just slightly injured.

案】In response to the post “Will human teachers be replaced by AI teachers?”, I’d like to share my thoughts.
AI teachers do have remarkable advantages. They possess an endless well of knowledge and can provide instant answers to various questions. Also, they can customize learning materials according to individual students’ needs, which greatly improves learning efficiency. Nevertheless, AI teachers are not without flaws. They lack the ability to understand and respond to students’ emotions.
In my opinion, human teachers and AI teachers should complement each other. Human teachers’ experience and emotional connection are irreplaceable, while AI can be a powerful teaching aid.
答案】Para 1
But his glasses came off when he fell in the water. Harry and Joel waded back into the river. Twigs and leaves swirled around their ankles before floating away on the current. No glasses! Hairy thought they might have been swept downstream, without which Mr. Taylor couldn’t see. Everything was a blur to him now. How could they get home? “Oh great! Now we’re lost,” groaned Joel,"and it might be days before someone finds us.” "No thanks to you.” Harry blamed.
Para 2
"Just calm down." Mr. Taylor shouted, "Without my glasses, we need to work together to find our way." Mr. Taylor fumbled in his backpack and pulled the map and the compass out. Luckily, Joel learned how to read a map from his books, and Harry knew how to use a compass from his hiking club. They stopped arguing, looked down at the map, so that they searched for the river and used the compass to find the direction. In relief, Mr. Taylor beamed proudly, "You two will save the day. You’re pretty good hiking partners!”
