Tove Jansson, the Finnish writer and artist, wrote her first “Moomin” story, featuring a snout-nosed troll (长鼻子精灵) living in a magical land threatened by a rising flood in 1940. This was eventually published in 1945 as The Little Trolls and the Great Flood, the first of nine Moomin books that became Finnish literary classics. The Moomin characters achieved international recognition when Jansson adapted them into a comic series for The Evening News in London in 1954, and saw renewed popularity again in the 1990s with an animated series and feature film.
However, Jansson’s life as an artist and peace activist is far less well-known. The newly opened exhibition in Paris, “Houses of Tove Jansson”, aimed to bring more attention to her work and the utopian vision (乌托邦愿景) that influenced it. It featured Moomin illustrations and cartoons, along with Jansson’s paintings, and designs for costumes and sets — many of them expressing a wish for peace and harmony.
Exhibit organizer Tuukka Laurila said that many characters in the Moomin series were inspired by Jansson’s personal relationships. Moomin papa and Moomin mother are often seen as representations of Jansson’s parents. Snufkin is inspired by Atos Wirtanen, one of Tove Jansson’s close friends.
Born in Helsinki in 1914, Jansson began drawing at a young age and worked with magazines, creating around 100 illustrations. From 1944, she lived for half the year on Klovharun, a tiny island with only one house, enjoying a simple lifestyle and welcoming guests. This open-door friendliness is mirrored in the Moomin stories, where home symbolizes safety yet faces various threats.
Laurila shared that “Houses of Tove Jansson” encouraged visitors to explore her creativity and the important topics in her Moomin universe, from friendship to environmental awareness, making her impact significant even today. “She’s describing what we’re currently going through,” she added, “but it’s amazing to think that she wrote these about 80 years ago.”
4. What can we know about the Moomin characters
A. They didn’t appear on the screen.
B. Jansson created them with other partners.
C. They gained recognition in 1954 around the world.
D. They lived in a peaceful and safe land.
5. How do Jansson’s personal relationships affect the creation of the Moomin series
A. By offering Jansson enough funding to support her creation.
B. By helping Jansson solve problems in her creation process.
C. By providing inspiration for many characters in the Moomin series.
D. By helping Jansson promote the Moomin series to audiences worldwide.
6. What did Jansson do on Klovharun
A. She published most of her Moomin books there.
B. She held small exhibitions of her paintings.
C. She created over 100 illustrations for magazines.
D. She lived a simple life and welcomed guests.
7. Which of the following may Laurila agree with
A. Jansson’s works still have important meaning today.
B. Jansson’s Moomin stories have little to do with real-life issues.
C. The exhibition mentioned failed to show Jansson’s creativity.
D. The Moomin characters do not reflect Jansson’s personal life.
C
A simple handshake may reveal more than just a greeting. A new study suggests that the way people shake hands could unconsciously communicate emotions and personality characteristics.
Dr. Emily Carter, a behavioral psychologist leading the research, studies non-verbal (非口头的) communication and its role in relationships. Her curiosity about handshakes began during a leadership workshop. She noticed that participants’ handshakes varied significantly, and she wondered if these differences might carry meaningful information. To test her idea, she and her team conducted an experiment.
The researchers found 200 volunteers and recorded their handshakes using high-speed cameras and pressure sensors. Participants were asked to shake hands with strangers, friends, and colleagues under different situations, such as meeting for the first time, resolving a conflict, or celebrating success. The team also measured participants’ heart rates and skin reactions to track emotional responses.
The findings were revealing. Strong, firm handshakes were often associated with confidence and enthusiasm, while weaker handshakes tended to signal nervousness or discomfort. Notably, longer handshakes with slight upward movements were linked to excitement, while short, rigid ones reflected tension. The study also illustrated that the temperature and moisture (湿度) of a person’s hand could reflect their emotional state. Warmer, slightly sweaty hands were more common when participants felt anxious or stressed, while cooler, dry hands were linked to calmness.
Carter believes these insights have practical applications. For instance, business professionals could use handshake analysis to better understand their clients’ emotions during negotiations. Similarly, advisors might use it as a tool to understand a client’s emotional state without relying only on verbal communication.
However, Carter cautions that handshakes are just one piece of the puzzle. “Human interaction is complex, and something as simple as a handshake can speak volumes, “ she says. As scientists continue to explore the mysteries of non-verbal communication, it’s clear that no single gesture can tell the whole story.
8. What’s the function of paragraph 1
A. To describe an experiment. B. To introduce the main topic.
C. To tell a true story. D. To give an example.
9. Why did Dr. Emily and her team decide to conduct an experiment
A. To test if the differences in handshakes carry meaningful information.
B. To study the exact definition of non-verbal communication.
C. To record the heart rates of people in different social situations.
D. To help business professionals understand their clients better.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The specific steps of the experiment.
B. How to use handshake analysis in daily life.
C. The main results of the experiment.
D. How to shake hands with different people.
11. What does the last paragraph show
A. Handshake analysis has no real value.
B. A single gesture cannot explain everything.
C. Non-verbal communication has been fully explored by scientists.
D. Handshakes are the most important part of non-verbal communication.
D
A group of farmers in Nigeria are using a new method to grow crops from moisture (水汽) in the air. The method, known as aeroponics, does not use soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air and take in nutrients from water mist. The method could make a big difference in places where huge amounts of land have been made unfarmable.
Biochemist Samson Ogbole is popularly known as Nigeria’s smart farmer. He and his team are growing crops without soil at the technology-based farm they started three years ago in Abeokuta. Ogbole says they are working hard to end the seasonal food shortage in Nigeria. “It is just farming anytime during the year, meaning we can plant crops anytime during the year, and we can harvest anytime during the year.”
But setting up the aeroponics farm was not easy. It required more than $180,000. And people in Abeokuta boycotted this nontraditional method of farming. It took a lot of effort to change those people’s minds about it. In fact, in Nigeria, about 30 million hectares of farmland is being used, instead of the 78.5 million hectares required for food security. In the north, only 49 percent of the land is fertile, a situation that worries traditional farmers. Aeroponics, however, does not require traditional farm work or much land. Nutrients for the plants are controlled by a recycling system, greatly increasing productivity.
Dr. Phillip Ojo, Director-General of the National Agricultural Seeds Council, says the government welcomes the new farming method. Ojo notes that with aeroponics, farmers can quickly increase planting materials.
The agricultural industry represents about 40 percent of Nigeria’s economy. The government wants to greatly expand this percentage. For now, most farmers lack the technical knowledge to increase productivity. They also need access to high-quality seeds to guarantee (保证) better harvests. Technologically skilled farmers like Samson Ogbole are offering a new way forward.
12. What can be known about aeroponics
A. It is not affected by the seasons. B. It helps crops draw nutrients from the soil.
C. It will make the condition of the soil worse. D. It is aimed at bringing back farmland.
13. Why are Ogbole and his team working hard
A. To reduce the aeroponics farm.
B. To end the seasonal food shortage in Nigeria.
C. To get more support from other countries.
D. To help the poor all over the world.
14. What does the underlined word “boycotted” mean in paragraph 3
A. Welcomed. B. Approved. C. Obtained. D. Resisted.
15. What is Dr. Phillip Ojo’s attitude to aeroponics
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Opposed.

The corner of 71st Street is my corner. Most folks look at it and say there’s nothing there, just an empty lot. But they’re not looking hard enough.
My name is Tia. I live on the third floor of an apartment building. Some days, when my sisters are running after each other, and my brothers are yelling, and I feel like the walls of our apartment are about to burst, I run down to my corner. I walk through the tall grass. Butterflies and crickets scare up at my feet. I’m careful not to step on the flowers that grow here. If I’m really quiet, the birds go on about their business all around me. I sit down and close my eyes and listen to their songs. The sun warms my skin, and I wonder why I’m the only one who’s thankful for this place.
Some folks don’t respect this corner. I’ve seen them throw trash from their car windows as they speed down 71st. There is junk here, too — old chairs, a broken bicycle wheel, someone’s rusty mailbox.
One evening, Mama says, “Tia, the city wants to pave over that corner of yours. Turn it into a parking lot. It’s in the paper today.” I stop in my tracks. “Not my corner, Mama! They can’t do that!” “They can and they will,” says Mama, “unless somebody comes up with a better idea.”
“It just needs some cleaning up, that’s all. How come they can’t see that ” I run to my room and slam the door. Out of my window I can see my corner. Where will the birds and butterflies go when it’s all blacktop and concrete
Mama knocks softly at the door and steps in. “Tia, you see something in that corner that most folks don’t. You got to make them see what you see. Make some noise about it. No one ever got anywhere by sitting back and staying quiet.” That night, I lie awake for a long time. I’m thinking about what Mama said to me. In my heart, I know she’s right. I’ve got to do something.
注意:
(1) 写作词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Early the next morning, I bring my “NO PARKING LOT!” sign to the corner.

A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Opposed.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C

Early the next morning, I bring my “NO PARKING LOT!” sign to the corner. I hammer it firmly into the ground, the sound echoing through the quiet morning air. I start to pick up the trash scattered around, my hands getting dirty but my heart full of determination. Soon, my siblings see what I am doing and come to help. Neighbors walking by stop to ask what is going on. I tell them about the city’s plan and show them the beauty of the butterflies, crickets, and birds here. They look around thoughtfully, as if seeing the lot in a new light.
A week later, signs and noise spread all along 71st Street. More and more neighbors flock to join me. They wave anti-parking-banners high in the air and bring tools to clean it up further. When a city official comes to assess the site, he finds people gardening and talking happily. I step forward and explain why this place is precious. He looks at the lively scene and nods in approval. Days later, we receive the wonderful news: the parking lot plan is canceled My corner is saved, proving that the world shifts not from silence but from brave noise.
