But then I looked at my phone and saw the news that a hurricane was coming. I asked my dad what a hurricane was and if he knew what to do. He told me not to worry because a hurricane was just a big storm. We stayed in our hotel room. By the afternoon, there was even more rain. And the winds were getting stronger and stronger.
In the evening, a hotel worker asked all the visitors to go to the dining hall. When we were all inside, we put tables in front of the doors and then we got down on the floor together in the corner. We waited and waited. The winds got louder, the rain became heavier and then it suddenly went dark. I was so scared that I held my dad’s hand. We stayed there for a long time.

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7. A total of 126 people were killed and 188 others were injured. How terrible! If you’re indoors during an earthquake, here are some ways to protect yourself.
Drop to the floor. Earthquakes always happen without much warning, so it’s recommended that you drop to the floor as soon as an earthquake hits.
Take cover. Get under a strong table or desk. If possible, stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch (蹲) in an inside corner of the building.
Hold on. The ground may be shaking and objects could be falling. Hold on to whatever surface or platform you’ve gotten under and wait for the shaking to stop. If you are unable to find a surface to hide under, continue to keep your head protected by your arms.
Remain inside. Researchers have shown that most injuries happen when people try to change the place of hiding or when the place is crowded and everyone has a goal to get outside. So remain inside until it’s safe to get out.

①In early January 2025, a huge fire broke out in Los Angeles, California. The strong Santa Ana winds made the fire spread very quickly. The fire damaged not only people’s houses but also the environment around them.
②A lot of forests and grasslands were burned. Many trees turned black, and the green grass was gone. All those plants were important for animals. Without them, animals lost their homes and food. Squirrels (松鼠) that lived in tree holes had to run away. Deer that ate the grass had nothing to eat. Some small animals like mice and rabbits died in the fire.
③ The soil also got into big trouble. Plants usually help keep the soil in place. But after the fire, there were no plants. When it rained, the rain washed the soil away. In some hilly places, mudslides (泥石流) occurred. They broke roads and even destroyed some houses.
④ The air became dirty, too. The fire sent a lot of smoke and bad things into the air. People in the areas near the fire had to wear masks. If someone had trouble breathing, they were in even more danger.
⑤ All in all, the 2025 Los Angeles wildfire was a big blow for nature. It will take a very long time for everything to get back to normal. People need to think about how to prevent this kind of fire in the future.

第二节 阅读表达(共5 题; 每题2 分, 满分10 分)
阅读下面短文, 简略回答问题。
Liam Carter, a 14-year-old nature lover, was hiking in the mountains when he saw the terrible effects of a recent wildfire. Burned trees and barren (贫瘠的) land could go as far as the eye could see. Liam felt heartbroken so he decided to do something about it.
He began researching and discovered that wildfires destroy millions of acres of forests each year, leaving animals homeless and the natural environment destroyed. To make a difference, Liam decided to work out a solution.
After months of hard work, he developed a machine to help stop wildfires: a robotic drone fitted with thermal sensors (温度探测仪). The drone can fly over forests, discover unusual heat patterns, and send signals to fire departments before small fires grow out of control.
The most creative character of Liam’s drone is its AI system. “I wanted to build something that could react faster than humans and make forests safer,” Liam explains. Using a set of mathematical instructions or rules which helps to work out an answer to a problem, the drone can tell the difference between normal heat sources, like the sun or campfires, and dangerous wildfire hotspots.
Liam’s science teacher, Mr. Dawson, is amazed by his ability to continue trying to do so. “It’s not often to see someone so young take on such a big challenge,” he says. “Liam’s creativity and persistence (坚持) are truly encouraging.”
Liam’s journey wasn’t easy. He faced problems with programming the AI and experienced several technical failures. But he kept improving his design, learning from his mistakes, and asking for advice from local engineers and firefighters.
In the future, Liam hopes to develop his project by creating a network of drones that can check larger areas and even plant new trees in destroyed forests. “Nature is so important to all of us,” Liam says. “I want to use technology to give back to it.”
Liam is grateful that his family encouraged his interest in nature and technology. “They’ve always supported my crazy ideas,” he says with a smile.
“I don’t know exactly what job I’ll choose,” Liam adds, “but I know it will involve protecting the environment and making the world a better place.”

What to do in an earthquake
Earthquakes often happen suddenly, so it’s difficult to warn people about them. Most people have little or no chance to prepare for an earthquake, so here’s some advice about what to do.
If you are inside, don’t jump out of tall buildings. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture. Leave the building quickly when the ground stops shaking. Don’t use the lift. Keep cool, be brave and try to help others.
If you are outside, move away from buildings. Don’t stand near street lights or under electric lines. Stay away from bridges and trees. In the mountains, be careful of falling rocks. On the beach, run away from the sea and move quickly to higher ground.
Above all, think about what you learnt in school and try to help others and save lives.
