Do you think cookies can tell stories Jasmine Cho, 35, does.
A baker, artist, entrepreneur and activist, Cho tries to spread knowledge about social justice issues and diversity through the delicious medium of cookies.
It was in high school that she discovered her love of baking. At a sleepover a friend taught her how to make a dessert, “sort of demystifying baking and that whole process”.
Later, Cho realized her second passion: learning more about her Asian, American culture. An elective in college that taught Asian-American immigrant experiences brought an emotional moment for her. “So many emotions came up that I just couldn’t articulate. It was like this mix of anger, relief, empowerment, sadness...” Cho said.
Cho realized she could combine these two passions to educate others about influential Asian-American people and showcase matters that were important to her. With her online bakery, she designed cookie portraits about people she admired and posted the images on Instagram. “I don’t think I ever really knew how to communicate these stories until I found cookies,” Cho said. “Cookies are just so disarming. Who doesn’t like cookies ” One cookie that Cho has identified with deeply is one she made of George Helm, a Hawaiian activist in the 1970s.
“It’s insane the amount of injustice that the native Hawaiian population has faced as well through the whole annexation (吞并) of the kingdom. There were so many horrific stories that I heard about nuclear testing and the fallout (核爆炸后的沉降物) impacting native Hawaiian populations in all of this,” Cho said, “George Helm was one of those activists who really represented the spirituality of the native Hawaiians and the connection to their land, to nature.”
Among her amazing cookie art are other political figures such as Larry Itliong, a Filipino-American labor organizer, and pop culture figures such as Keanu Reeves, a Canadian actor.
Cho hopes her cookie art continues to inspire people to be creative and think positively.
“Instead of trying to think of something new and original, just look inward and see, maybe there’s already a passion or a love that you have,” Cho said. “Use that for something that will serve the world in a better way.”
41. What inspired Cho to take an interest in Asian-American culture
A. One of her sleepover experiences.
B. One elective she took at college.
C. The process of learning baking from her friend.
D. A book she read about Asian-American immigrant experiences.

B. To show what knowledge Cho focuses on with her cookies.

D. To explain why Cho is interested in political activists.
44. What approach does Cho recommend to make a difference
A. Making use of your passion.
B. Turning to political figures for help
C. Trying to do something creative and special.
D. Asking people around to work along with you.

A. Think outside the box to break new ground.

Until recently, the “science of the future” was supposed to be electronics and artificial intelligence. Today it seems more and more likely that the next great breakthroughs in technology will be brought through a combination of those two sciences with organic chemistry and genetic engineering. This combination is the science of biotechnology.
Organic chemistry enables us to produce marvelous synthetic materials. However, it is still difficult to manufacture anything that has the capacity of wool to conserve heat and also to absorb moisture. Nothing that we have been able to produce so far comes anywhere near the combination of strength, lightness and flexibility that we find in the bodies of ordinary insects.
Nevertheless, scientists in the laboratory have already succeeded in “growing” a material that has many of the characteristics of human skin. There is a good chance that our next step will be “biotech hearts and eyes” which can replace diseased organs in human beings. These will not be rejected by the immune system, as is often the case with organs from donors.
The application of biotechnology to energy production seems even more auspicious. In 1996 the famous science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, many of whose previous predictions have come true, said that we might soon be able to develop remarkably cheap and renewable sources of energy and some of these power sources would be biological. Clarke and others have warned us repeatedly that sooner or later we will have to give up our dependence on non-renewable power sources. Coal, oil and gas are indeed convenient. However, using them also means creating dangerously high levels of pollution. It will be impossible to meet the growing demand for energy without increasing that pollution to catastrophic levels unless we develop power sources that are both cheaper and cleaner.
It is tempting to think that biotechnology or some other “science of the future” can solve our problems. Before we surrender to that temptation we should remember nuclear power. Only a few generations ago it seemed to promise limitless, cheap and safe energy. Today those promises lie buried in a concrete grave in a place called Chernobyl, in Ukraine. Biotechnology is unlikely, however, to break its promises in quite the same or such a dangerous way.
46. According to Paragraph 2, what is the author’s view on natural materials compared to synthetic ones
A. Natural materials are superior in multiple properties.
B. Synthetic materials have surpassed natural ones in quality.
C. Organic chemistry cannot replicate natural materials’ features.
D. Future technology will eliminate the need for natural materials.
47. The examples of “biotech hearts and eyes” in Paragraph 3 are used to demonstrate ________.
A. the complete replacement of human organs is imminent B. the practical potential of biotechnology in medicine
C. the resolution of immune system rejection issues D. the cost-effectiveness of biological materials
48. Author C. Clarke is most likely to agree that in future societies ________.
A. biological power will play a dominant role in the market
B. all the predictions that he has made will come true
C. the use of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal will be stopped
D. dependence on non-renewable energy must be reduced
49. Which of the following statements best describes an advantage of biotechnology mentioned in the passage
A. It relies entirely on synthetic materials for energy production.
B. It provides both economical and eco-friendly solutions.
C. It ensures immediate replacement of all diseased human organs.
D. It has surpassed nuclear power in safety and efficiency.
50. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Biological power will probably live, up to all its promises.
B. Biotechnology is the only way to address our future energy problems.
C. Nuclear power is a limitless cheap and safe kind of energy.
D. Biological power is less likely to be as threatening as nuclear power
D
Some games are destined to live in your memory forever. These are the ones that become instant classics; people talk about them for years after release, sometimes even decades. They appear on every best-of list and get played and replayed over and over again. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of these games.
First released as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch in 2017, people are still discovering Breath of the Wild four years later. I first picked up the game about six months after Nintendo Switch came out-the earliest I could finally get my hands on the console (游戏机). It was late enough to have heard the accolades but before it had been regarded as one of best video games of all time. I loved every second. It was tough, but worth pushing through. I’ve done most of what there is to do. But there’s one big thing I haven’t done: beat the game.
I’ve completed all the story quests (任务) up to the ending. I’ve even wandered the castle. But I can’t bring myself to save the princess. Every time I decide I’m going to take the plunge (毅然决定) , I throw my controller aside. I can’t bring myself to do it. If I beat Breath of the Wild, the adventure is over. As long as I avoid finishing it, there’s still something new to discover. Chances are, I’m not alone. Surely other gamers do this-and not just with Breath of the Wild. This isn’t about losing interest; it’s wanting to always have more left to play.
This refusal to complete a game might sound ridiculous. But let’s be real: It’s not uncommon for the ending to be far from the best part. Too often, I’ve been upset about the way a story ended or that a character didn’t get the closure I really wanted. Only recently did I realize those things didn’t really matter; the point of a game is the quest itself, not the ending, so why bother rushing through it
I’m not sure if I’ll ever finish Breath of the Wild. At this point I’m not going to dive back into the game because I’ve completely forgotten what to do and how to do it. I have vague (模糊的) plans to replay it before the sequel (续集) comes out, but for now I’m fine with not having finished this Zelda variant (系列).
51. The underlined word “accolades” in paragraph two probably
A. blessings B. complaints C. rumors D. praises
52 The author hasn’t finished the game yet because ________.
A. he finds it too hard to clear all the quests and save the princess
B. he is upset that the story may not end in the way he really wants
C. he is reluctant to end the amazing adventure the game has brought him
D. he is unsatisfied with the closure that the character is going to receive
53. According to the passage, what can be inferred about the author
A. He purchased the Nintendo Switch as soon as the product came out
B. He is still playing the game, Breath of the Wild, in his spare time.
C. He values the process of the game more than its result.
D. He has lost interest in finishing the game, Breath of the Wild, in the future.
54. Based on the passage, which of the following best describes the author’s current attitude towards The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
A. Indifferent, as he prefers the coming sequel ones
B. Uninterested, he no longer considers replaying
C. Content, as he enjoys the journey though not finishing it yet
D. Skeptical, thinking they rarely live up to expectations
55. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. explain why some players avoid completing games
B. criticize game developers for poor story endings
C. promote the unique gameplay of Breath of the Wild
D. argue that difficulty levels ruin gaming experiences

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。
When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that was if l had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a stomachache or a mild fever—but not me…I had to be dying in order to stay home. By the way, my parents are both doctors. My parents used to say that they were teaching me how to have a good work ethic(职业道德). I didn't understand the connection until last week.
The other day I was on the train and sat behind a young man who was complaining to his friend about his life. He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn't pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn't want to waste time because it would take years to make it big. He then admitted to thinking about buying stocks(股票)by borrowing money because he thought he could easily make six figures within one year. His friend agreed with him and said, "The stock is good because you can make tons of money and only work for a short time."
I think they were indulging(沉溺)in the wildest fantasy. Many people these days don't realize that when things seem to happen immediately, it is only because a lot of effort, determination and time have gone into them and it isn't due to some miraculous(不可思议的)event. The easier it looks, the more hours go into it. There is no excuse for laziness.
Looking at the two young men, all of a sudden I was having a flashback of being ten years old and watching the television show Fame.
In the show the dance teacher told her students, "If you want fame, fame costs and here's how you start paying for it…sweat." Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard.
56. When did the author's parents allow her to stay home from school (no more than 10 words)
