Nuclear expert Peng Shilu once said that he only did two things in his entire life: one was to build nuclear submarines (核潜艇), and the other to build nuclear power plants. Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. In fact, he held leading positions in most of China’s early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations.
Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (化工机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. At that time, the central government decided to select a group of outstanding students studying abroad to transfer to the atomic (原子的) energy major. Peng willingly agreed, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to developing China’s nuclear power.
In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. Appointed as the director-in-chief, Peng once again devoted himself to its preparation and construction.
During his career, Peng held a variety of high-ranking titles. In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the top academic bodies in China.
Peng passed away in Beijing on March 22, 2021 at the age of 96. The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee awarded the title “Role Model of the Times” to Peng for his contributions.

Located in the heart of a mountain village in China’s Guizhou province, there is a unique ecological family farm. It is run by Kevin Cillen, a 28-year-old Belgian who is passionate about the land. With his parents and siblings (兄弟姐妹), they have combined Western farming techniques with local countryside practices to create an “ecological oasis”.
The family’s pursuit of their farming dream in China began in 2000, when Kevin’s mother Hetty Cillen visited China as a volunteer for the first time. The attractive landscapes and rich cultural heritage of Guizhou fascinated her, causing her to make this foreign country her home. Soon after, his father Patrick Jan Cillen joined her. The family began their journey in 2017 by renting a plot of forest land for their eco-farm. They started by getting it ready — they leveled the land, grew food for the animals, and began raising lambs and chicks.
The locals have openly embraced the foreigners, inviting them to festivities and celebrating traditional Chinese holidays together. In 2018, Yang Chengkai, a 34-year-old villager, befriended the family, often assisting them on the farm. “The community has embraced this family. Even the vendors (小贩) at the local market contribute by giving them free vegetable to feed their animals.” Yang says.
The family farm, hidden in the forest, is a great example of Guizhou's eco-friendly development. To protect the environment, they grow different types of grass for animal feed, use solar panels for electricity, and collect rainwater for their water supply.
Living in China, the 28-year-old Belgian has witnessed the country’s remarkable changes. He has also seized the opportunities of the Internet and new media to increase the farm’s visibility. Partnering with Qiu Ye, a social media influencer, he has set up accounts like “Kevin’s family in Guizhou” on various platforms. By sharing their daily lives on the farm and the natural beauty of rural China, their content has quickly earned over 700,000 subscribers.
8. What made Hetty Cillen decide to settle in Guizhou
A. The natural beauty. B. Volunteer work. C. A research project. D. Career prospects.
9. How does the family farm contribute to ecological progress in Guizhou
A. By creating jobs for the locals. B. By introducing Western equipment.
C. By practising sustainable way of farming. D. By improving eco-tourism and green living.
10. How has Kevin promoted the farm
A. He has created a website. B. He has set up social media accounts.
C. He has it advertised by local villagers. D. He has organized events for subscribers.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. Belgians harvest a good farm life in Guizhou.
B. Belgians get attracted by the beauty of Guizhou.
C. Belgians become a social media influencer in China.
D. Belgians live in a local Chinese community.
Imagine the final stretch of a marathon: your body aches, but the cheering crowd gives you energy to run faster. Similarly, a basketball team wins more home games in front of their own fans. Even you might solve a problem faster when someone watches. These common experiences all point to a basic psychological principle.
This phenomenon is known as social facilitation (促进), which describes how individuals can perform tasks differently when in the company of others compared to when they are alone. The concept was first proposed by psychologist Norman Tripplett, who noticed that cyclists raced faster in groups. He tested his theory with a simple experiment where children were tasked with winding fishing line. Tripplett observed that the children who were being around others moved faster, suggesting that a peer (同龄人) nearby can motivate.
But later studies found conflicting evidence. In another test, participants were given a more complex task, like memorizing a list of words. Those in front of others performed worse than those working alone. This contradiction (矛盾) led to a key change of the theory. The presence of an audience tends to improve performance on simple tasks. On the other hand, for novel tasks, the same audience can hurt performance.
Why does this happen Psychologists suggest the key reason is our concern about being judged by others. Since approval and disapproval often depend on others’ evaluations, we naturally become more alert in front of an audience. This alertness helps with mastered skills, but gets in the way of learning new ones.
There isn’t one recipe for success, but social facilitation theory helps to point us in the right direction. To improve a well-practiced skill like running or playing an instrument, strategically seek an audience by joining a club or performing publicly. If you struggle when watched, practice alone until you gain confidence. By taking advantage of social settings wisely, we can use the audience effect to achieve our best performance.
12. What is the main idea of social facilitation
A. Group interaction enhances learning efficiency.
B Individual performance peaks in competitive settings.
C. Social situations have predictable effects on behavior.
D. The presence of others can influence our performance.
13. Which factor can explain the conflicting results in paragraph 3
A. The size of the audience. B. The difficulty of the task.
C. The type of the reward. D. The personality of the participant.
14. What is the root cause of social facilitation
A. Evaluation anxiety. B. Peer pressure.
C. Competitive desire. D. Personal standard.
15. What does the author suggest we do about the phenomenon
A. Gradually increase audience size. B. Thoughtfully manage social contexts.
C. Actively observe others' performances. D. Strategically seek supportive audiences.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My hearing aid was a box that was tied to my shoulders and hung from my neck. I carried it because when I was young I became deaf. After consulting(协商) with a lot of educational experts, doctors, and parents of other deaf children, my parents decided to send me to a school where all of my classmates and teachers would have normal hearing, instead of sending me to a private school for the deaf. So I was the only deaf child at Blue Creek Elementary School.
I experienced great anxiety throughout Elementary School because, in addition to the problems of “fitting in” with the other students, I also struggled with most of my school work. I seemed to spend every spare moment doing homework just so I could keep up. I could feel that my parents and teachers were deeply disappointed in me because of my academic struggles. The teachers didn’t know what to do with me nor did they show much interest in any of my poor performances.
My hearing disability required me to ask everyone from time to time, “What did he or she say ” I worried that everyone would soon grow tired of repeating everything back to me. When the kids made fun of me, I had no way but to accept it. I was sure that I was a bad person; my self-esteem(自尊心) was quite low. I saw myself as an ugly kid wearing a box around his neck who wasn’t even smart enough to keep up with the rest of the other kids.
Mrs. Jordan, my 5th grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple two-word phrase. One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips(嘴唇) from my front-row seat and immediately raised my hand. I couldn’t believe it—for once I knew the answer.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But, when she called on me, I was afraid.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】
But, when she called on me, I was afraid. I took a deep breath, stood up slowly and answered Mrs. Jordan’s question in a low voice. Then came the silence. I felt so nervous that I lowered my head and did not dare to see the reaction of the teacher and other students. I would never forget what happened next. Mrs. Jordan pointed directly at me. With shinning eyes and a wide smile, she cried: “That’s right, Stephen!” Surprise and then joy overwhelmed me.
For the first time in my young life, I was a star in my class. I became the focus of my class, with everyone looking at me. My confidence soared like never before. I decided right then and there that I would make a place for myself in this world. No matter how many difficulties I might meet in life, I knew I could overcome them. A simple three-word phrase delivered with incredible enthusiasm had totally changed my young life. “That’s right, Stephen!”
