Young Entrepreneurs Fight Plastic Pollution
Background: The theme of this year's World Environment Day(June 5) is“Ending PlasticPollution”. In China, a group of young entrepreneurs have transformed waste such as plastic bottles, fishing nets, and old bicycle tires into fashionable and practical products, contributing to the construction of a“plastic-free future”.
Details of Young Entrepreneurs’ Practical Projects
Entrepreneur Region Brand(品牌) Core Practices
Gao Chao Shenzhen UOOSEE Cooperates with nearly 2, 000 bicycle shops nationwide, collecting over 3,000 old tires monthly; processes tires into durable and waterproof backpacks through cleaning, cutting, and sewing without chemical treatment, which are popular among young consumers who value environmental protection and style.
Supa Foshan HowBottle Turns drink bottles and fishing net s into recycled plastic to produce bags, hats, glasses and other products; advocates that“materials themselves are not bad—— plastic has value if recycled rather than thrown away”.
Ren Yao Chengdu AbuSolutely Founded the brand in 2011, developed lightweight and tough bamboo bicycles inspired by a 100-year-old British bamboo bicycle;products have passed EU testing, and he personally rode a bamboo bicycle to complete the 2, 600-kilometer Qinghai-Xizang Line challenge from Chengdu to Lhasa; bamboo fiber has a bearing capacity three times that of steel at the same weight, with both high toughness and shock reduction.
Market Feedback and Consumer Cognition(认知)
Sales Performance: The sale of Ren Yao's bamboo bicycles has grown from 12 units in 2016 to300-400 units per year currently;
Consumption Trend: More and more Chinese consumers choose green products and recognize the concept of environmental protection;

Entrepreneurs’ Views on Green Products
Supa: The high price of green products comes from green practices like proper waste handling; as more enterprises participate in green production, product choices will become richer;
Gao Chao: Young consumers tend to choose products matching their own values. UOOSEEuses long-lasting materials( backpacks have a service life of over 10 years) to pursue“sustainable fashion” rather than short-term trends;
Ren Yao: Green products must prioritize quality(consumers will not buy them only for environment); optimistic about the global competitiveness of Chinese green brands, believing that China's strong production capacity can support high-quality products to stand out.

In college, I wrote an essay about Christmas Eve. I wanted to share the spirit of this special night for my family. I got an A, but even better was this comment from my professor:“I believe you have found an avocation.”
I had to look up“avocation”. According to Merriam- Webster, it means“a subordinate(副职的) occupation pursued in addition to one's vocation(天职) especially for enjoyment:HOBBY.” It can also mean“customary employment”, or vocation. I'm not sure which way the professor meant it, but either way, he turned out to be right.
My essay described our traditions: chili, church, two presents(pajamas, plus a gift of our choosing). A lot of it was about my Aunt Bud, the head of my mom's family. We were lucky we lived closest, so she spent holidays at our house. Sadly, she's gone now. Like so many wonderful spirits, she died too young, just after she retired with big plans for an easy life.
But she's not really gone. She visits us all often, in the form of a cardinal(红衣凤头鸟)—her favorite bird and one that actually looks a lot like her. Round and bossy.
One June day, I called my mom.“What are you doing ”I asked.“Sitting here looking atBud's tree,” she said, referring to the tree that the funeral home(殡仪馆) had sent home with us. It was about a foot tall when my dad planted it; today it towers over the roofline.
“There are cardinals all over it,” Mom said.“I' ve never seen so many.”
I wasn't surprised.“Mom, you know what day it is, right ”I said.“It's Aunt Bud's birthday.” So of course she had come to visit—— with friends.
In this issue, we' ve collected inspiring stories about unusual events that happened around the holidays. This year we focus on people who extended a kindness that made a forever difference in someone's life.“Angels in action,” we call them. I hope your angels visit you this holiday season.

Last year, an estimated one in seven Americans participated in Dry January, a challenge to abstain from alcohol for a month. The idea is to detox(戒掉) from holiday alcohol excess(过量) and start the new year on a healthier note. The annual 31- day exercise began as a public health campaign in the United Kingdom about eight years ago and has been growing ever since.
Dry January is a great strategy for improving your relationship with alcohol, says KeithHeinzerling, MD, internist and addiction medicine specialist at the Pacific NeuroscienceInstitute in Santa Monica, California.“Doing a‘trial quit’ for a short period of time is easier for many people than going straight to total abstinence(节制),” he says.“Taking time away from drinking, even just for a few weeks, gives you a fresh perspective and the opportunity to break bad habits you may have with alcohol.”
It doesn't take long to start to see positive changes, according to Dr. Heinzerling.“Within just a few days of not drinking, your blood pressure and heart rate will be lower, and you' ll have improved blood sugar regulation, better sleep, and less anxiety and depression,”
he says. Another bonus: Quitting alcohol often makes other good habits—— exercise and healthy eating, for example—— easier to start and maintain, which in turn leads to even more health benefits.
For those who are concerned they might not be able to handle a month of not drinking,Dr. Heinzerling says a crucial sign is how you feel when you wake up in the morning.“People who wake up with withdrawal symptoms, irritability(易怒), sweating, shaking, and a strong need for a drink should not do Dry January or any detox program without medical supervision,” he says.
For everyone— social drinkers and possible problem drinkers—— one key to a positive DryJanuary is to see it not as a month of gritting(咬紧) your teeth and getting through it until you can drink again, but rather the start of a healthier lifestyle overall. What better way to start the new year

A. A flash in the pan. B. A stepping stone.
C. A wolf in sheep's clothing. D. A bitter pill to swallow.
31. What is Keith Heinzerling's attitude towards Dry January
A. Doubtful. B. Subjective. C. Supportive. D. Dismissive.

For many years, scientists believed that all dinosaurs were cold-blooded. However, they also knew that dinosaurs eventually evolved into modern birds, like pigeons and chickens, which are warm-blooded. That meant that at least some dinosaurs must have become warm-blooded, but which ones and when that happened was unclear. Now a new study has found that dinosaurs became warm-blooded about 183 million years ago.
Cold-blooded, or ectothermic, animals rely on external sources of heat, like sunlight, to maintain their body temperature. Reptiles, amphibians, and most fish are cold-blooded.Warm-blooded, or endothermic, animals can generate their own body heat internally. Birds and mammals, including humans, are warm-blooded.
The new study was led by Alfio Alessandro Chiarenza of University College London, in the UK. He and his team analyzed about 1,000 dinosaur fossils from the Mesozoic Era(230 to66 million years ago). They also looked at how the climate changed and different species of dinosaurs spread throughout the Earth during that period. About 183 million years ago, massive volcanic eruptions caused climate disruptions(紊乱) on Earth and led to the extinction of many plant and animal species. The team found that at about this time, two of the three main dinosaur groups—— theropods and ornithischians—迁徙) to colder climates.Theropods include Tyrannosaurus rex, and ornithischians include Triceratops andStegosaurus.
According to the study, the move to colder areas indicates that these dinosaurs had developed the ability to generate their own body heat.“If something is capable of living in very cold regions, it must have some way of heating up,” Chiarenza said. In contrast, sauropods(蜥脚类恐龙), the dinosaur group that includes the Brontosaurus, mostly stayed in dry, warm climates. As cold-blooded dinosaurs, they would have needed a warm environment.
The team believes that the ability to regulate their own body temperatures gave warm-blooded dinosaurs an advantage after the climate disruption. They would have been able to stay active, grow, and have babies, all of which would have helped them to survive.
32. Where do warm-blooded animals get heat from
A. Sunlight. B. Themselves. C. Other animals. D. Volcanic eruption.
33. How did the author develop paragraph 4
A. By making comparisons. B. By presenting statistics.
C. By giving a definition. D. By describing the research process.
34. What will the text probably talk about next
A. The reasons why sauropods eventually went extinct.
B. The applications to predicting future climate changes.
C. Specific evidence of how warm-blooded dinosaurs lived.
D. A detailed description of the massive volcanic eruptions.
35. Which is probably the best title for the text
A. The Dinosaur Migration Mystery B. Volcanoes: A Dinosaur Extinction Event
C. How Dinosaurs Adapted to Cold Climates D. Sauropods: The Last Cold-Blooded Giants

Self-control is one of the major components of emotional intelligence, and willpower is key to self-control. Willpower involves resisting short-term temptation(诱惑) and satisfaction in order to focus on long-term goals. Researchers suggest that willpower is like a muscle, which means that it can get stronger over time with consistent, healthy exercise.
Pay attention to your body.
Instead of ignoring the physical signals of your emotions, start listening to them. Our minds and bodies are not separate, and they affect each other deeply. You can raise your EI by learning how to read physical clues that tell you into what emotions you' re feeling. 39
Work on your listening skills.
Truly listening to others while they speak helps you pick up on their emotions and respond to them, which is a key aspect of emotional intelligence. 40 Active listening skills include using engaged body language, summarizing and repeating what the other person said, asking thoughtful questions, and making sure you take equal turns talking.

A simple“Puppies(小狗) for Sale” sign hung on the pet shop door, catching the eyes of passers-by, especially children. One afternoon, a boy around eight years old paused outside the shop. His clothes were worn but neat. After a moment's hesitation, he pushed the door open, and a small bell announced his arrival.
The shop owner, a gentle-faced man, looked up from his work. “Can I help you, son ”he asked kindly.
“How much are the puppies ” the boy replied, his voice shaking with hope.
“Anywhere from thirty to fifty dollars,” the owner said.
The boy's face fell. He dug into his pocket and pulled out a handful of crumpled(皱巴巴的) bills and coins. Carefully counting them, he said, “I have two dollars and thirty-seven cents. May I please see the puppies ” Touched by the boy's sincerity, the owner smiled and made a soft sound with his mouth. A graceful Labrador named Lady emerged from the back, followed by five tiny, energetic puppies. But one puppy lagged far behind, limping(跛行)painfully with every step.
The boy's eyes locked onto the struggling puppy. “What's wrong with that one ” he asked, his voice filled with concern. “The animal doctor said he was born with improper bones,” the owner explained gently. “He’ ll always limp and never run or play like the others.”
To the owner's surprise, the boy's face lit up. “That's the puppy I want to buy!” he insisted. “You don't want him,” the owner said, shaking his head. “If you like him, I' ll give him to you for free.”
The boy stood tall, his eyes burning with determination. “I don't want him for free. He's worth as much as the others. I' ll pay two dollars and thirty-seven cents now and fifty cents every month until he's paid for.” The owner bent down, his voice softening. “But he won't be able to run or play with you like a normal puppy.”

A wave of understanding washed over the man, his eyes misting as he finally comprehended the depth of the connection he was witnessing.“I don't run so well either,” the boy explained softly, his hand gently patting the puppy's head.“That's why he needs me—— we' ll understand each other in a way others can't.”
Overcome with emotion, the shop owner felt tears spring to his eyes. The carefully counted coins, the determined negotiation, the immediate connection to the imperfect puppy—— it all clicked into place with heartbreaking clarity. He wasn't looking at a pitying child and a broken dog. He was witnessing two kindred spirits finding one another. With a softened heart and newfound respect shining in his eyes, he gently placed the limping puppy into the boy's waiting arms. In that quiet moment, a bond was shaped, not of pity, but of profound shared understanding——a promise that neither would have to face the world alone.

W: Did you bring your homework, Larry
M: No, Miss. I left it at home. Will it be OK if I hand it in tomorrow
W: OK. But I don't want it to happen again.

W: Are you still thinking about driving into the city to buy books The traffic will be bad.
M: The weather forecast says it' ll rain heavily, so I decided to stay at home instead.
Text 3
M: Hi, I'd like to book an appointment with the doctor, hopefully at 10 a.m.
W: I'm sorry. It's already booked up. I could fit you in an hour later or we have a free spot at four this afternoon.
M: I' ll take the one in the morning, please.

M: Excuse me, can you help me I was looking for the Lecture Hall.
W: Maybe I can. I'm looking for the Lecture Hall, too. I think it's in the library. Oh, this building is the stadium. Are you a new student
M: Yes, I am.

M: Wow. Have you ever seen such a beautiful rainbow
W: No, I can't believe it's been out for so long.
M: Yes, it's been for at least 30 minutes since it first appeared. What a beautiful sky!

M: Amy, I heard you and your mom didn't buy anything during your back- to- school shopping.
W: No, we don't share the same taste in clothes. She didn't think anything in that shop was fashionable.
M: Well, you' ll need some warm clothes before winter sets in. Oh, look at this cool jacket!
W: That's a nice one, but it's torn in the back. Look!

M: Hi Mary, I'm the manager John, welcome to our city's community farm. Is today your first day
W: Hello, thanks. I' ve been here for two days.
M: That explains it. I was away for five days. We love having new volunteers on our farm. How did you know about us
W: Sam told me, you know him
M: Oh yes, Sam and other market workers come to buy our vegetables every week.
W: That's him, by the way, what's the plan for today
M: A group of students are coming for a study trip. You' ll help me teach them how to pick plants.
W: Lovely. Will they learn how to cook
M: That's for tomorrow.

M: This food smells delicious!
W: Thanks. But it's not for us to eat. I'm taking dinner to Rachel tonight. She's been having a hard time, andI thought it would make her feel better.
M: I'm sorry to hear. What happened to her
W: Well, she lost her job last week.
M: Oh, poor Rachel! Did she get fired
W: Not exactly, but she was let go. She had been working at a law firm, but the firm hadn't been getting many cases, so they had to let some of their staff go.
M: Will she get unemployment benefits
W: I think so, but she will be embarrassed about living on that. Besides, she loves being a lawyer, and she'd rather work than sit at home.
M: I understand. But at least she' ll have a little money to pay her rent while she looks for another job.
W: Yeah. But actually, I was hoping you could help her find a job. Isn't your friend Theodore a lawyer Is his office hiring
M: They might be. I' ll give him a call tomorrow and let you know.

M: Hi, Lisa.
W: Hey, Tom. You weren't in the engineering class today, were you
M: I' ve got a bad cold. I was wondering if you could fill me in on what happened.
W: It was actually a fascinating class. Professor Smith discussed a new type of fuel.
M: Oh, right. What is it
W: It's about CNG.
M: Oh, I' ve heard of CNG before. It's a kind of eco-friendly fuel, isn't it
W: Exactly. CNG is good for the environment and it's suitable to be used as a fuel in vehicles and industrial applications.
M: So CNG doesn't pollute the air when it's burned in an engine
W: Professor Smith says CNG produces fewer greenhouse gases compared to petrol, making it a cleaner alternative. And it's more efficient.
M: When do you think it will replace other fuels
W: It won't be anytime soon. It's expensive to produce massively.
M: Well, thanks for the update. I suppose I won't need to look at your notes.
W: Actually, you might want to. We have a test coming up next week.

M: Good morning, everyone. Thank you for joining me today. I want to update you on some important changes at our school that will impact your children. Firstly, our school campus has buildings from different times. Oakwood House, the oldest, was originally built a hundred years ago as a private home, but it became part of the school when we opened 60 years ago. As our community has grown, so has our school. I'm excited to announce that we have received approval to expand our facilities. The lower school, currently across the street, will be moved to new buildings on our main campus. The old lower school site will be developed into housing. Construction for the new school buildings is expected to start in the coming months. Another immediate change is our lunch facilities. Our current canteen is too crowded with only one food line. Starting next Monday, we' ll open a new Food Hall with three separate food stations: hot meals, sandwiches, and Asian dishes. To save time, please discuss lunch choices with your kids each morning so they know which station to visit quickly. Thank you for your support as we make these exciting changes!
