Winter Solstice Celebrations From Around the World
The winter solstice (冬至), the longest night of the year, falls on December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 20 or 21 in the Southern. Since ancient times, people all over the world have recognized this important occurrence and celebrated the following “return” of the Sun in a variety of different ways. Old solstice traditions have influenced holidays we celebrate now, such as Christmas and Hanukkah. Here are some solstice traditions both new and old to help light your way to longer days.
Soyal
Soyal is the winter solstice celebration of the Hopi Indians of northern Arizona. Ceremonies include purification, dancing, and sometimes gift-giving. At the time of the solstice, Hopi welcome the kachinas, some protective gods from the mountains. Prayer sticks are crafted and used for various blessings and other ceremonies.
Yalda
The Persian festival Yalda, or Shab-e Yalda is a celebration of the winter solstice in Iran that started in ancient times. It marks the last day of the Persian month of Azar. Yalda is viewed traditionally as the victory of light over dark, and the birthday of the sun god Mithra. Families celebrate together with special foods like nuts and some stay awake all night long to welcome the morning sun.
Midwinter in Antarctica
Even Antarctica gets its share of solstice celebration, thanks to the researchers staying there over the long, dangerously cold season. While those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are enjoying the most daylight hours, in the Southern Hemisphere they are celebrating Midwinter. Festivities include special meals, films, and sometimes even handmade gifts.

During World War II, Duchess Nina Douglas-Hamilton played a vital role in looking after animals.
As the war broke out, the government issued orders for the mass killing livestock (家畜) to prevent them from being captured or destroyed by the enemy. Duchess Nina launched a campaign to save as many animals as possible, and soon became known as the “animal heroine” for her efforts.
Duchess Nina worked with local farmers and animal owners to relocate animals to safer areas, such as the Scottish Highlands. She also established a network of volunteers who helped to care for animals during the war. She organized feeding programs, medical care and transportation, ensuring that animals were well looked after even during the most difficult times. The most challenging aspect of her work was the shortage of food during the war. So she established a vegetable garden and used leftovers to create nutritious meals for animals. She also reached out to the public for donations of food and supplies, and was able to secure enough resources to keep animals healthy and fed.
In addition to her work with domestic animals, Duchess Nina was also a strong advocate for wildlife conservation. She established a center for wild animals Scotland, where she provided a safe place for deer, foxes and other animals that were threatened by the war. She also worked with local protection groups to protect natural habitats.
Duchess Nina’s work during World War II was not without its risks. She frequently risked her life to save animals, often driving through perilous areas.
Sadly, some people saw her efforts as a distraction from the war effort. However, she continued to work tirelessly for animals. After the war, Duchess Nina’s work was recognized by the government and she got an important award for her services to animals.

C. To provide a home for wild animals.
D. To offer a safe place to animal owners.
7. What does the underlined word “perilous” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Dangerous. B. Urban. C. Faraway. D. Poor.

In China, tea has become an important part of everyday life for thousands of years. As the tea-processing methods and tea culture have evolved over the years, tea sets have also changed to meet the practical and cultural needs.
During the Tang Dynasty(618~907AD), tea leaves were traded across the country and Asia. For the convenience of transportation and storage, tea leaves were pressed into bricks. To prepare tea, drinkers had to cut them into small pieces and boil them in heat-resistant teapots.
By the Song Dynasty(960-1279), drinkers started to turn the hard bricks into powders (粉末) that could be whipped (搅打) in a cup with boiled water. This whipped tea is most commonly associated with Japanese tea ceremonies today.
By the 1500s, tea bricks gave way to the form of rolled leaves. This innovation led to the invention and use of teapots as we know them today. These teapots originally came from the Yi Xing region of China and were soon copied throughout the world. Then Japanese teapot-makers moved the handle from the side to the top of the teapots.
Tea finally reached Europe in the 1600s, along with the necessary tea sets made in Japan and China. As English teapot-makers began to adapt the tea sets to their country men’s tastes, they eventually added a handle to the tea bowl because of the English habit of drinking hot black tea, which was consumed at higher temperatures. The size of teacups also grew to accommodate milk and sugar in their tea.
By the early 1900s, innovations in tea drinking became an American affair. The most revolutionary one was the tea bag, which was accidentally commercialized by Thomas Sullivan. He had been sending customers tea wrapped in silk bags. Rather than take the leaves out of the bags, as Sullivan intended, the customers put the bags into their teapots instead. Not only did the tea bags push the teapot back to the sidelines of tea service, they were also too large for teacups and led to the modern practice of drinking tea from mugs.
8. Which was used to make the whipped tea in Japan
A. Rolled tea leaves. B. Freshly picked tea leaves.
C. Powdered tea leaves. D. Loosely pressed tea leaves.
9. Which innovation was first introduced by the British
A. Tea bags and mugs. B. Tea bowls with handles.
C. Heat-resistant teapots. D. Teapots with top handles.
10. What can we learn from Thomas Sullivan’s story
A. Customers are very creative. B. Innovations are relatively easy.
C. Marketing strategy is critical. D. Good ideas can be born by accident.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. The Development of Tea Sets B. Varieties of Tea Leaves
C. Various Tea-making Methods D. The Spread of Tea Trades

Doctors often emphasize that in the event of a heart attack, time is crucial for saving heart muscle. The heart depends on a continuous supply of oxygen delivered by the heart’s blood vessels (血管). When these vessels become blocked, the oxygen supply stops, and the heart’s muscle cells begin to die within minutes. Survivors of heart attacks frequently suffer from heart failure, with a worrying statistic showing that 50% of them may not survive beyond five years. “Eventually, their hearts become so weak that they can’t maintain sufficient blood flow and they ultimately stop,” explains Sanjay Sinha, a heart expert at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
However, within the next five years, there could be a new alternative to grow live, beating “heart patches (补丁)”. Sinha, along with a team of biologists at the University of Cambridge’s Stem Cell Institute, is working on this innovative approach. These heart patches are tiny, beating pieces of heart muscle. They are grown in lab dishes over a month. The process begins by taking blood cells and reprogramming them into a specific type of stem cell capable of developing into any cell type within the human body. Sinha is currently preparing to test these patches, first in mice and then in pigs. If successful, human tests can begin within five years.
In the United States, scientists from Stanford University are also working on creating heart patches. They imagine a future where ultrasound and MRI scans (超声波和核磁共振扫描) are used to identify the damaged section. Based on the shape of the section, a perfectly custom heart patch would be 3D-printed. Doctors would then open the chest and attach the patch directly to the heart.
The major challenge with this method is making sure the new patch connects well with the heart’s electrical signals to ensure they beat in harmony. What’s more, the cost of developing and using these patches is high, which may put them out of reach for many people. Still, Sinha believes that if these issues can be solved, heart patches might help millions of people around the world.
12. What is the function of paragraph 1
A. To reveal a finding.
B. To offer a solution.
C. To present a problem.
D. To outline research.
13. What is the first step in growing heart patches
A. Launching a clinical trial in humans.
B. Testing the heart patches on animals.
C Raising heart patches in lab dishes.
D. Generating stem cells from blood cells.
14. Why are ultrasound and MRI scans used in the process
A. To create a 3D model of the heart.
B. To find the damaged area in the heart.
C. To design the shape of the custom heart.
D. To provide real-time guidance for operations.
15. What is the major barrier in using the heart patches
A. Making them available worldwide.
B. Lowering the cost of producing them.
C. Finding qualified doctors for the procedure.
D. Ensuring their harmonious work with the heart.

During my middle school days, I was never quite good at sports. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to find my footing on the field. This constant struggle left me feeling disheartened and filled with self-doubt.
One day, we had a soccer match in gym class, and it turned out to be a disaster for me. My mistakes led to our team's defeat, and I felt a strong sense of disappointment and embarrassment. To make matters worse, some of my teammates expressed their dissatisfaction, intensifying myself-doubt.
But out of the darkness, a ray of light emerged in the form of Gina, a warm-hearted and caring classmate, who noticed my struggle and understood the significance of supporting each other, She approached me after the match with a sweet smile on her face, comforting me in an encouraging voice and offering to give me a hand.
From that moment on, Gina became more than just a friend; she became my coach. She often went out of her way to spend extra time guiding me during our gym classes. I vividly remember the day when she taught me how to catch a ball. She patiently demonstrated the technique, showing me the right way to position my hands and how to predict the ball’s trajectory(轨迹).
With each attempt, she provided constructive feedback along with encouragement. “Yes, you’ve got this!” she would often say. “Well done. Keep pushing forward!” Her sincere belief in my abilities and her words of encouragement created a safe space for me to make mistakes and learn from them without fear of judgment, Gradually, I started to overcome my fear of the ball and developed the confidence to catch it instead of ducking away.
As our interactions increased, so did our bond of friendship. Gina would share stories of her own struggles and victories, saying that challenges were a natural part of the learning process. We laughed, we supported each other, and we grew together.
