I’ve had 35 close meetings with polar bears as an explorer. Over the years, I’ve never hurt a bear. But there was one occasion when the closest thing to hand was a saucepan (平底锅).
In 1990, I was in Spitsbergen. Spitsbergen has a high concentration of polar bears in the spring. When a bear is hungry, it can smell you from many miles away. I’d been waking up at night repeatedly because I thought I’d heard the crunch (嘎吱声) of bear walking.
Checking was not easy. There would be thick ice on the inside of my tent. If my fingers got out of the sleeping bag for too long, I would get hurt. The easiest way to check for bears was to get on my knees while still inside the sleeping bag, open the tent, and stick my head out to view around. Often, there was nothing.
On the day it happened, I’d cooked in a saucepan. When I turned it off, there was silence at first. Then, I heard crunching. Because of the previous false alarms, I felt quite nonchalant as I opened the tent’s entrance. It was a shock to see a huge polar bear facing me. So my hand reached for the nearest thing — the saucepan.
I hit the bear as hard as I could on its head. I clearly remember it turning its head to one side. I think the noise of the saucepan scared it as much as the impact. As I wondered whether to hit it again, it turned round and ran out of sight.
As a young adventurer, I used to feel it was me against my surroundings, but then I realized I could work with nature. Most crucially, you need to remember bears have more of a right to be there than you.
4. Why was the author unable to sleep well in Spitsbergen
A. He came across bears frequently. B. He was once attacked by a bear.
C. He camped in a bear-heavy area. D. He was often woken up by bears.
5. How did the author find polar bears
A. By breaking the ice coating. B. By walking around the tent.
C. By looking out from the tent. D. By viewing through a telescope.
6. What does the underlined word “nonchalant” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Calm. B. Surprised. C. Nervous. D. Excited.
7. What did the polar bear do after the hit
A. It turned its head to avoid the hit. B. It let out a loud noise.
C. It stared at the author hardly. D. It escaped quickly.

Imagine walking into a room filled with strangers. You haven’t spoken a word. You haven’t heard one either, yet something is already being said. This is not magic. It’s the mind’s secret language. It’s the quiet feeling that stays with every talk we have. Human beings are language-related creatures, but long before you learned to talk, you were already a master of silent communication. The ability to sense others is the basis of human connection.
Most of the emotional information we send and receive doesn’t come through what we say — it comes through how we behave. Body language is the silent symphony (交响乐) of every social interaction. Charles Darwin pointed out that emotions like fear, anger, joy and sadness are expressed similarly across cultures — and he was right. Paul Ekman’s research later showed that six basic emotions are universally recognized.
But the face is just the start. The rest of the body plays too. Crossed arms can signal defensiveness. Leaning in can show interest. Tapping feet may reveal anxiety. And often, your body gives away what your words are trying to hide. These signals operate below the level of conscious control. It’s fast. And often, more truthful than speech.
The eyes have long been called the window to the soul — and it has recently been proven by studies. Eye contact starts chains of brain processes tied to attention, trust, and understanding. Eye contact increases connection, improves cooperation, and increases persuasion. But different cultures explain it differently — what feels honest in one culture may seem unfriendly in another.
We live in a world filled with words. Still, we must ask: What happens when we over-depend on words and ignore the unspoken Actually, to reconnect, we must look up, lean in, watch more than we speak and listen not just to what is said, but to what is felt. When we become fluent in the mind’s secret language, we don’t just connect more. We understand more. And that understanding is the beginning of healing, of creation, of peace.
8. Why does the author set a context at the beginning
A. To present a rare phenomenon.
B. To introduce the key to connection.
C. To show the role of silent language.
D. To point out limitations of language.
9. What did Darwin find about physical language

C. Its cross-cultural difference. D. Its different forms.
10. What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss
A. The face expression in communication.
B. Hiding meanings behind speeches.
C. Conscious control in communication.
D. Body language revealing real emotions.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. The Power of Words in Communication B. The Secret Language of the Mind
C. Cultural Differences in Eye Contact D. The Importance of Body Language

In recent years, digital health has advanced rapidly, with 2023 marking a turning point in how technologies are used to improve both patient outcomes and system efficiency. The continued digitization and automation of health care are no longer uncertain trends but established realities. As health systems evolve, these innovations are reshaping the delivery of care, expanding access, and driving more personalized, cost-effective solutions for both patients and providers.
At the beginning of 2023, experts anticipated significant progress in several key areas of digital health — and those expectations have largely been fulfilled. Women’s health, for instance, emerged as a key point, drawing growing attention and investment. FemTech solutions, backed by data-driven models, have begun offering end-to-end care pathways tailored to women’s specific needs. Likewise, mental health saw a rise in innovation, with digital platforms bridging care gaps, providing individualized treatment options, and enabling remote access that removes geographic and economic barriers. Meanwhile, the rising focus on cost-efficiency was supported by AI tools capable of streamlining processes across the entire care continuum (全过程).
Among the most transformative developments has been the integration of generative AI (GenAI) into health care. Initially applied to areas such as drug discovery, data interpretation, and pattern recognition, GenAI has rapidly expanded its reach. Recent advances now allow it to process vast amounts of unstructured data — from clinical notes to wearable device outputs — thus offering insights previously inaccessible. Several medtech firms have announced major infrastructure initiatives centered on AI, and use cases which are spreading across all areas of the industry.
Looking ahead, experts predict that GenAI will play an even more important role in 2024. From accelerating R&D and lowering administrative costs to enabling real-time diagnostics and automating billing, the technology promises not just incremental (递增的) improvements, but deep systemic transformation. The current moment has been even described as “the dawn of the AI era” in health care — a time when algorithms (算法) may become central to how care is delivered, measured and improved.
12. What marked a key change in health care in 2023
A. Better hospital facilities. B. Changes in lifestyle.
C. Wider use of digital tech. D. Fewer health issues.
13. What is a benefit of FemTech solutions
A. Cheaper treatment for disease. B. Personalized care for women.
C. Faster mental health recovery. D. More hospital-based services.
14. What can GenAI do with unstructured data
A. Replace human analysis. B. Reduce device outputs.
C. Reveal hidden patterns. D. Generate medical reports.
15. What does the text suggest about the future of GenAI
A. It will focus on data analysis. B. It will replace doctors.
C. It will remain dominant. D. It will reform health systems.

A piercing (刺耳的) alarm wakes you up from your sweet dream. But it’s not your alarm clock — your building is on fire. ____16____. Here are some suggestions to improve your chances.
____17____.
If you’re in the market for a new home, or if you simply like playing with buttons, a high-rise (高层的) apartment sounds like the right fit for you. Still, it’s essential to get prepared. Make sure you choose a building with an up-to-date fire safety system. Familiarize yourself with the building’s emergency procedures and locate all emergency exits.
Don’t panic
An unexpected fire alarm will be scary, but try to stay calm. Keep a clear head and try to figure out whether the fire is above you, below you, or on your floor. Then feel the door to your unit. If it is cool, you should be able to leave your apartment and head for the nearest exit. If you do leave, be sure to close all the doors behind you. ____18____.
Get down to the floor
The primary killer in a fire is smoke, not the heat or flames. If you have to pass through smoke, make sure you do so by crawling on all fours. Crawl your way through the smoke, as breathable air is often closest to the floor. ____19____. This helps filter out the smoke as you breathe.
Never attempt to jump
Do not jump from any floor above the second. You’ll likely have better chances of survival waiting inside for help to arrive. Although it feels unreasonable to wait during a fire, panicked decisions can lead to costly mistakes. ____20____. They use fire-resistant materials and are equipped with sprinklers, alarms, and emergency voice systems to guide you.
A. Do your research
B. Update emergency procedures
C. It picks up first responders at ground level
D. Meanwhile, use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth

For months I had been saving money and planning our family’s weekend trip. We hadn’t gone anywhere together for years, and I wanted this one to be special. After searching countless websites, I chose a state park famous for its mountain trail. Pictures online showed breathtaking views from the top of the mountain: rolling hills, a silver river winding far below, and sunsets turning the sky into fire. I imagined us taking the perfect family photo at the top.
I made careful lists — snacks for the hike, rain jackets just in case, and a reminder to charge the camera. The website had mentioned picnic tables by the lake and small nature walks.
The morning we left, the weather seemed perfect. The skies were clear, the air was cool, and sunlight caught on the car windows. My excitement grew with every mile. But as we drove closer, dark clouds gathered, then came the heavy rain. At the park entrance, a handwritten sign read: “TRAIL CLOSED DUE TO HEAVY RAIN.” I sat in the car staring at the words, my heart sinking. All my careful lists and dreams of the top of the mountain had led to nothing more than a closed sign.
We parked silently by the visitor center. I started to complain that the trip was ruined when I saw a girl in a wheelchair at the entrance of the visitor center. She was probably in her twenties, tears in her eyes. Curiosity drove me to get out of the car and walk to the girl’s side. “Hello, I’m Cathy. What’s wrong Why are you crying ” I asked. “Hi, I’m Lucy. I have to go back tomorrow to have a leg operation. I don’t know when I can come here again,” she answered. “It’s okay. The rain will stop soon and let’s go to the top of the mountain together,” I said immediately. Lucy nodded in surprise.
