Many unique caves in the world are found on the shores of oceans and lakes. They are always there to attract visitors across the globe.
Sea Lion Caves
Found on the Oregon Coast, it’s well-known as the only mainland breeding ground (繁殖地) of the Steller sea lion, a near-threatened species. It’s also the longest sea cave in North America, measuring1,315 feet long. Most of the cave is at sea level and is flooded with water at high tide. One section of the cave, sitting 50 feet higher, serves as a platform to view the creatures’ habitat.
Apostle Islands Sea Caves
Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands Sea Caves are sandstone caves on the shores of Lake Superior. The caves are accessible by boat in summer, but seeing the caves during winter has become a popular, if weather-dependent, alternative. When Lake Superior freezes, the ice is sometimes thick enough to allow hikers to walk across the lake and explore the caves.
Great Blue Hole
Located off the coast of Belize, it’s a vertical cave that’s entirely underwater. It measures 984 feet in diameter and 410 feet deep. With its beautiful, clear water and a variety of wild marine life residing in its depths, the Great Blue Hole is most famous as a scuba-diving destination. Although the Great Blue Hole is one of the most spectacular, it’s not the world’s only blue hole.
Painted Cave
The Painted Cave, located on California’s Santa Cruz Island, is an expansive sea cave known for the colorful rocks, lichen and algae found on its walls. After the Sea Lion Caves, it’s the second-longest sea cave in North America, at 1,227 feet long. The cave is a popular kayaking (划艇) destination since the cave’s bottom is underwater for its entire length.
1. What may contribute most to Sea Lion Caves’ fame
A. Being the breeding place for a rare species.
B. Being the longest sea caves across the world.
C Its seasonal high tides at such a low sea level.
D. Its distinct platform for watching sea creatures.
2. What time might be appealing to visit Apostle Islands Sea Caves
A. In spring time. B. During winter time.
C. In summer time. D. In the fall.
3. What do Great Blue Hole and Painted Cave have in common

They got ready for parties and shared countless laughs as freshmen in the dormitories of the University of Maryland. They bonded over being black women at a university where, in 1971, only 4% of the students were black. Friends called the tight-knit group of women Sugar Hill, and the name sustained.
But that wasn’t the end of the friend group. For the past 50 years, the women have met at least once a year for dinners, sleepovers and vacations. The 16 women of the Sugar Hill Sisterhood, as they now call themselves, have leaned on one another through decades of milestones: weddings and graduations, baby showers and funerals. “There’s no challenge too big for the sisterhood,” says Everene Turner, a member of the team, “I could call in the troops in a minute.”
While many people have friendships that span decades, the women of Sugar Hill are something of a case study in what it takes to maintain them. Although the bond among them was forged during college, they’ve worked hard to stay connected and nurture their relationships. A group chat helps them stay in touch daily, as do phone calls, video chats and remote group activities like a 90-day fitness challenge. They are committed to their annual reunions and have maintained unwavering support for one another.
In the late 1970s, one of the group members, Dawkins whose boyfriend died in a car accident, was mourning the loss when another Sugar Hill sister persuaded Dawkins to live with her. They stayed roommates for the next few years. Dawkins says, “Time and friends are two things that become more valuable the older you get.”
Their group name has become part of their identity and now extends to family members. The friends support one another’s children and grandchildren, and the children of the sisterhood also spend time together. “It’s a great feeling knowing that we’ve passed the Sugar Hill legacy to our offspring and they are passing it down to their offspring,” Jonetta says. And before Dawkins got married in 1985, Jonetta’s husband joked to her fiance that his commitment would extend beyond Dawkins, “Just make sure you want to do this — you’re marrying her, but you’re marrying 15 other sisters as well.”
4. What do we know about the women of the Sugar Hill
A. They were enthusiasts of parties.
B. They graduated from university in 1971.
C. They came from different racial backgrounds.
D. They developed a tight-knit relationship at university.
5. What can be inferred from Everene Turner’s words in paragraph 2
A. She has a pack of soldiers to back her up.
B. They have never encountered big problems.
C. They can unite as a whole whenever they are needed.
D. She can help make emergency calls when help is needed.
6. According to the text, how do the women probably think of maintaining a distance relationship
A. It presents challenges but is rewarding.
B. It takes equal investment among them.
C. In-person interaction is unnecessary with telecommunication.
D. Physical distance increases their appreciation for the time spent together.
7. What is the writing purpose of the text
A. To demonstrate women’s power. B. To illustrate the significance of friendship.
C. To share a sisterhood that lasts a life time. D. To entertain readers with an unusual anecdote.

From its source in Burgundy, the Seine flows 483 miles to reach the sea, with the capital sitting nearly in the middle. The River’s Parisian map has changed over time, its course changed by floods. The city’s Latin motto, “Fluctuat nec mergitur — swayed by the waves but does not sink,” recalls these historical floods, and Paris’s struggle in dealing with them.
Bathed in myth and memory, the Seine is the lifeblood of the city that started on its banks. Along this “main street”, as Napoleon called it, Parisian landmarks are on proud display, looking magnificent and great. It’s so central to the city’s existence that building numbers are linked to the river: Those on vertical (垂直的) streets begin their numbering closest to the Seine, while on parallel streets building numbers rise in the direction of the waterflow.
“For Parisians, there is a strong historical and visceral (发自肺腑的) attachment to the river,” says Pierre Rabadan, the deputy mayor of Paris. For centuries, life was lived on the river. The Seine’s banks were a gathering place for work and leisure: Laundresses washed clothes, dockers unloaded cargo, merchants hawked their goods, and people sunbathed and swam.
But a different approach to urban planning in the 20th century began to separate the populace (民众) from the river. In the 1960s, highways were constructed directly on the water’s edge. The ports even changed into parking lots.
The tide turned in 2013 when the city government decided to pedestrianize the motorway on the Left Bank. Cyclists and walkers returned to the ports, enjoying new installations such as climbing walls and floating gardens. A riverside park on the Right Bank’s motorway followed in 2016.
“We are now trying to reconnect and recover the Seine, what’s historically been a water ecological passageway in a city that’s extremely crowded.” says Rabadan. “We want to bring life back to the Seine.”
8. What does the Seine mean to Paris according to passage
A. The life-giving force. B. The largest landmark.
C. The source of industry. D. The street in memory.
9. How are the building numbers set in streets parallel to the Seine
A. The numbers rise around the “main street”.
B. The numbers increase in the direction of flow.
C. The farther south, the bigger the numbers.
D. The further away the Seine, the smaller the numbers.
10. What did the government do with the River Seine in the 20th century
A. Reducing Parisians’ attachment to the river.
B. Forbidding locals to work and relax on the banks.
C. Establishing public transport facilities along the river.
D. Pedestrianizing the motorway on the banks of the river.
11. What does Rabadan think of the ideal River Seine
A. A place where people can do sports.
B. A place with many modern facilities.
C. A place without water transportation.
D. A place people live in harmony with nature.
D
Imagine you are driving on a stormy night, and your car suddenly alerts you to the danger of an imminent flood or an approaching hurricane. This future, where cars predict weather disasters well in advance, is edging toward reality, says the International Drivers Association. By 2030, cars are expected to evolve into “smart machines” in which reliable, personal weather forecasting units are installed, with advanced sensor technology and machine learning algorithms (算术) delivering real-time, exact weather updates.
“Bridging the gap between vehicular technology and meteorology holds massive potential in increasing road safety,” says Julianna Marshall, a travel expert from the International Drivers Association. “Imagine your car alerting you to trouble ahead and then directing you away from a road that’s about to be flooded or a bridge at risk of collapsing due to strong winds. That’s a revolution we’re keenly looking forward to.”
Several key factors lay the foundations for these weather-predicting capabilities in cars by the year 2030.
Modern cars have complex sensors that can measure atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed. These sensors can feed data into an onboard computer, providing crucial real-time weather information. Cutting-edge artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies can now analyse complex weather patterns and predict future outcomes. By integrating these technologies into automotive systems, your car’s computer can provide forecasts along your routes.
The interconnectivity of devices, known as the Internet of Things, will play a key role. Cars could share and receive weather data from a vast network of the connected devices, improving accuracy of predictions. Such tech-integrated cars will make driving during severe conditions safer while enhancing the overall travel experience. “Weather prediction in cars can save hundreds of lives annually by minimizing the likelihood of weather-related accidents,” Marshall emphasizes. “Getting hands on a car built with weather prediction technology might be optional today but will become imperative by 2030.”
Undeniably, 2030 promises the advent of a transformative era in automobile technology, a world where your car might just be your best weather forecaster. An era where “the future is now” is not just an exciting prospect — it’s the norm.
12. What can the future cars probably do
A. Stop extreme weather happening. B. Change the path of the hurricane.
C. Teach drivers how to predict weather. D. Perceive terrible weather conditions.
13. What does paragraph 4 focus on
A. Operational principle of future cars. B. The concept of the Internet of Things.
C. The functions of complex sensors. D. Increasing complexity of road safety.
14. What does the underlined word “imperative” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Reliable. B. Essential. C. Complex. D. Unrealistic.
15. What is the author’s intention in the last paragraph
A. To make predictions. B. To offer suggestions.
C. To fulfill promises. D. To express regrets.

Once a niche (小众的) sport, rock climbing has become a mainstream pleasure enjoyed by many. ____16____ However, with rock climbing’s rise in popularity, the amazing biodiversity sustained by cliff ecosystems is under pressure. To relieve this problem, there are numerous helpful acts you can do.
The presence of climbers at the cliff where binds are nesting can cause them to abandon their chicks to starvation. You should check if there are any bird nesting restrictions in the areas where you plan to climb. ____17____ And some organizations have an online database you can check.
Sometimes climbers also remove plants and soil when establishing a route that has not been climbed before so that it becomes more suitable for climbing. ____18____ Work with other route developers and conservationists to understand the potential impact of route development on the plants.
____19____ In the early days, climbers often collected data about the species and geography they encountered as part of an adventure. It is now much easier to contribute to science as a climber. Much of this comes down to the fact that each of us carries a tiny computer that can smoothly capture images, location, and sound and associate them with a timestamp-our smartphones!
Actually, in many places, climber representative bodies are taking great steps to ensure climbing is managed sustainably. This involves cooperating with the authorities of natural parks, and conservation organizations so that agreements can be reached that minimize the impact of climbing on the environment while keeping regulations to a minimum. These organizations often have limited funds with which to achieve these goals and tend to rely on the support of volunteers. ____20____
A. You can help by becoming a citizen scientist.
B. This information is usually available in climbing guidebooks.
C. This can wipe out the cliff ecosystem that was there previously.
D. Why not get in touch with one that inspires you and ask what you can do
E. Keeping existing routes in good condition avoids the damage to vegetation.
F. These data can then be accessed by scientists to avoid environmental issues on cliffs.
G. The natural world offers an exciting adventure through beautiful environments filled with wildlife.

When my husband passed away last year, my world turned upside down. Richard and I had been together for over forty years, and suddenly, there was an unbearable blank where he used to be. So, when my son, James, and his wife, Natalie, invited me to live with them for a while, I wasn’t about to refuse. I think being with the grandkids will be healing.
They welcomed me with open arms, making me feel like part of their daily life. They insisted that they wanted to help me through this difficult time and when I moved in, I only took the essentials. The rest of my things were locked 30 minutes away at my home, locking away the memories of a life shared with Richard.
From the beginning, there was simply one rule for the kids and myself: “Please, all three of you, stay out of the basement (地下室) ,” James had said when we were sitting for dinner, his tone was gentle but firm. “There are some repairs being done, and it’s really dusty and messy down there. We don’t want any of you to get sick or hurt. Understood ”
The boys, John, 6, and Eric, 4, nodded. I understood James’ concern, too. I agreed without giving it much thought. It wasn’t like I had any reason to go down there anyway.
Living with them was an adjustment. John and Eric were everything I needed to keep me distracted while my heart healed and grew with love for my grandchildren. We had also gotten into a new routine, where every evening, we’d gather in the living room for story time. Nothing delighted me more than watching their eyes light up as I read to them.
We’d been reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for a few days now, and it had quickly become a favorite for them. One evening, I turned to the next chapter, and as I read about Harry discovering the hidden entrance to the chamber, Eric suddenly piped up, “Grandma! We have a Chamber of Secrets too! In the basement!”

【答案】Dear Jack,
Hearing that you will return to your homeland, I’m glad you’re considering a gift that represents Chinese culture for your mom. I would like to recommend the Chinese cheongsam (旗袍) to you for the following reasons.
Firstly, the Chinese cheongsam is a timeless classic that has stood the test of time, whose elegant design and intricate details make it a beloved symbol of Chinese culture and fashion. Giving your mom a piece of cheongsam as a gift not only lets her experience authentic Chinese culture, but also makes her the star of any party. Most importantly, the dress is made of soft material, exquisitely cut to showcase women’s curves beautifully. Overall, a piece of cheongsam would be a perfect gift for your mother.
I do hope you can take my recommendation into account. Wish you a pleasant vacation and please remember to convey my regards to your mother.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
I paused, glancing down at him unbelievably. Eric said he would show it to me. Before I could stop him, he jumped off the couch and grabbed my hand, tugging me toward the basement door. I called that we were not supposed to be going down there. “There it is!” Eric exclaimed, pointing toward a door hidden behind a large sheet of plastic. I was curious and reached for the door handle. The door swung open with a soft creak, revealing a room that took my breath away.
The room was a perfect copy of my own bedroom back home. The familiar wallpaper and the same pattern of the bed were identical. But what truly made my heart sing was the photograph: Richard and I on our wedding day, smiling and young, full of life. I stepped backward, tears streaming down my face as a thousand memories flooded back. James and Natalie rushed down the stairs, followed by John. James explained softly that they wanted to surprise me and didn’t want me to go back to my old house. They wanted me to have a space here that felt like home. I hugged them and said in tears that I wanted them, too.
