Ed Jackson’s team were trying to climb to the top of a Himalayan Mountain. However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded (滞留) there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30 ℃. They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell asleep and did not wake up again.
Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death. Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby.
Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches (拐杖) then. He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas.
The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend OilyBarkley. It takes beneficiaries (受益人) who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature.
Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But hopefully what I’m doing, what we’re doing with the charity and what our beneficiaries are proving can give anyone the hope that they can turn their life around, no matter how discouraging it might seem at that moment.”
19. What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about
A. Jackson was tired of ball games.
B. Jackson was respected for his will.
C. Jackson was no stranger to suffering in life.
D. Jackson was advised to do exercise by his doctors.

A. To educate sports lovers.
B. To encourage safe mountain climbing.
C. To help people with similar experiences.
D. To raise money for the physically challenged.
22. What of the following can best describe Jackson
A. Creative and aggressive. B. Adventurous and inspiring.
C. Responsible and humorous. D. Enthusiastic and independent.

Climate change is increasing the risk of wildfires in many regions of the world. This is partly due to specific weather conditions-known as fire weather-that facilitate the spread of wildfires. Researchers from the Helmholtz Centre have found that fire weather seasons are increasingly overlapping (重合) between eastern Australia and western North America.
The west coast of North America and the east coast of Australia have been repeatedly hit hard by wildfires. For example, the January 2025 wildfire disaster in Los Angeles destroyed over 10,000 buildings and claimed 29 lives. The east coast of Australia was hit by one of the country’s most disastrous bush-fires between September 2019 and March 2020: more than 12 million hectares of forest burned. Firefighters from Canada, the US, and Australia have supported each other during these disasters.
The greatest likelihood of overlap — around 75% — occurs between July and December. Overall, the number of overlapping fire days in eastern Australia and western North America has been increasing by one day per year for the past 40 years. “This is because the fire season in eastern Australia is starting earlier in spring and overlapping with the fire season on the west coast of North America,” explains Dr Andreia Ribeiro.
This poses a challenge for cooperation between US, Canadian, and Australian fire services, which have long supported one another during wildfire emergencies. In the past, the fire seasons occurred at different times of the year: on the west coast of North America between June and October and in eastern Australia between October and March. These gaps provided enough time for teams to assist one another when needed. But these increasingly overlapping fire weather seasons in the US and Australia are narrowing the window for international cooperation and making it harder to respond quickly to large-scale wildfires.
The research will contribute to the improvement of international firefighting cooperation and national firefighting capacities. Both Australia and the US will need to strengthen their firefighting capacities in order to reduce reliance on international cooperation.
23. What’s the function of the figures mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To prove the significance of forests.
B. To explain the cause of the wildfires.
C. To show the severity of the wildfires.
D. To encourage the protection of forests.
24. What has led to the increasing overlap of fire weather days in the regions mentioned
A. The warming temperature around the globe.
B. The extended fire season in western America.
C. The high frequency of disasters in North America.
D. The early arrival of the fire season in eastern Australia.
25. What is the consequence of the increasing overlap of fire seasons according to the passage
A. It will reduce the damage caused by wildfires.
B. It will make international cooperation challenging.
C. It will pave the way for quick response to wildfires.
D. It will strengthen the support between US and Australia.
26. What is the author’s attitude toward the research
A Opposed. B. Favorable.
C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
D
Any student learning a foreign language knows that grammar can be complex. By changing the order of the words and by adding a range of auxiliary verbs (助动词) and suffixes (后缀), we can express different meanings. However, the question which many language experts can’t understand and explain is — who created grammar
Some languages appeared during the Atlantic slave trade. Slaves who spoke different languages developed a simple form of communication called a pidgin. This pidgin borrowed words from the language of the landowners. It had very little grammar, so people needed many words to express an idea. However, once children learned this pidgin as their first language, it changed into a full language. These children did not just repeat what they heard. They shaped it into a rich language, creating a new grammatical system.
Another example comes from sign languages for the deaf. These are not just random gestures — they contain grammatical rules, just like spoken languages. The creation of one such language was observed quite recently in Nicaragua. Not long ago, in Nicaragua, a new sign language was created. Deaf children were taught lip- reading in school, but outside class they used gestures from home to make their own sign system. It was like a pidgin, without clear grammar. Later, younger children developed a new sign language from the older children’s system. It was simpler and faster, with special grammatical ways to make meanings clear. All the children used the signs the same way, improving the original pidgin greatly.
Most experts believe that most languages were pidgins at first. At first, they were used in separate groups without fixed rules, and later became standardized. The English past tense — “ed” ending — may have come from the verb “do”. “It ended” may once have been “It end — did”. It seems that children have grammatical machinery in their brains. Their minds can serve to create logical and complex structures, even when there is no grammar present for them to copy.
27. What can we know about the slaves’ pidgin language
A. It was created by the landowners. B. It was the slaves’ native language.
C. It was not easy to express an idea. D. It contained highly complex grammar.
28. What is special about the new Nicaragua sign language
A. No same signs were used for communication.
B. Most of the gestures were made for everyday activities.
C. The hand movements were smoother and more attractive.
D. The meaning was clearer than the previous sign language.
29. Which idea does the author present in the last paragraph
A. English grammar of the past tense system is inaccurate.
B. Children say English past tense differently from adults.
C. The thought that English was once a pidgin is acceptable.
D. Experts have proven that English was created by children.
30. What is the best title for the passage
A. The Creators of Grammar B. The History of Languages
C. Why Pidgins came into Being D. How Grammar Systems Are Used

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a Chinese exchange student in your school. I’m writing to suggest including the language of Chinese into our current curriculum as an optional course, given that many students here show ongoing strong interest in it.
Known as one of the most spoken languages in the world and with its growing popularity worldwide Chinese has entered numerous classrooms in foreign countries. Besides, due to the rise of China’s international influence, speaking Chinese fluently has become a highly valued professional skill. Furthermore, learning Chinese helps open a unique window into one of the world’s richest and most ancient civilizations, which, meanwhile, will undoubtedly contribute to bridging the cultural gap between China and New Zealand.
I hope you can take my suggestion into serious consideration. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
