Our Red Maple High School baseball team had never achieved significant results in the state championships. Every year, we were eliminated (淘汰) early. Despite this, as the new team captain, I believed we could change that.
I am a creative girl. One autumn afternoon, I thought of a way to encourage my teammates. I decided to make a special card for each team member. The card read “Red Maple High School Tigers — 2024 State Champions!” and included an encouraging message — “Believe in yourself, and move forward with courage!”
I handed out these cards and told my teammates, “Place these cards in observable places and look at them every day to remember our goal.” My enthusiasm (热情) encouraged them, and they put the cards on their desks, in their lockers (锁柜) and even inside their baseball gloves.
As the season began, the Red Maple High School Tigers performed unexpectedly well. The players worked harder in practice and were more united in games, fighting for the common goal. My cards became their source of inspiration.
In the semifinals (半决赛阶段) of the state championships, we played against a strong team, the Blue Ocean High School Sharks. The game was very exciting, with both teams taking turns to score. In the last part of the game, we lost by one point.
At that moment, I walked to the pitcher’s mound and held up the card. My teammates saw the words on the card and felt a rush of determination. I told them, “We’ve come this far. We can’t give up!Believe in ourselves. We can do it!”
The teammates regained their spirit and worked together. On the final pitch, I swung with all my might and hit a home run, winning the game for our team. The cheers from the crowd were deafening, and we made it to the finals.
On the day of the finals, with unwavering faith and relentless determination, we defeated our opponents and won the state championships. The card that read “Red Maple High School Tigers — 2024 State Champions!” became a symbol of our victory and a source of pride for all the students and teachers at our school.

Tens of millions of bees are likely being killed each day by vehicles (车辆) in the western United States, a new study finds. The paper, published in Sustainable Environment, is the first to show how cars may be causing the loss of bees. Bees are important because they help pollinate (传粉) wild plants and a third of the world’s crops.
Scientists have studied the “insect disaster” by counting dead insects along roadsides. Most studies have focused on forests and larger insects. But bee diversity (多样性) is greatest in dry, open areas, and most bees are tiny — just 2 to 25 millimeters long.
A research team from Utah State University studied bee deaths by driving on highways, paved roads, and unpaved roads during the day when bees are active. They made 29 trips around Utah in spring and summer, traveling more than 9,334 kilometers, and identified bees that were hit by cars. Every trip resulted in at least one bee death, and they found 14 different species.
The researchers guessed that one car driving between Salt Lake City and Moab might kill 50 to 175 bees. Based on traffic data, that means several million bees are killed when 94,000 cars travel that route each day. Millions of cars run in Utah daily, and similar trips happen in nearby states, so the total number of bees killed each day in the region is likely in the tens of millions.
Although the numbers are based on simple assumptions (假设) they are still important. There are ways to reduce these deaths. Research has shown that bees usually avoid crossing roads unless there are plants in the middle. So, creating healthy habitat along both sides of a road, but not in the middle, could help.
8 What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Limitations on such studies.
B. The influence of climate on bees.
C. Living areas of various bees.
D. Scientists’ efforts to study diversity.
9. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 3 and paragraph 4
A. By making a comparison.
B. By listing related numbers.
C. By showing real data related to bees.
D. By stating the result of the team’s study.
10. Which is one way to prevent bees from being killed
A. Raising drivers’ awareness. B. Placing flowers in the middle.
C. Growing plants on roadsides. D. Leaving more space available.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To explain the bee’s diversity. B. To remind readers to drive less.
C. To introduce the danger to bees. D. To ask people to grow more flowers.
D
According to a new study, loneliness not only makes people feel unhappy, but it can also seriously affect their daily lives and brain functions.
The study found that feeling lonely increased the risk of developing dementia (痴呆) by 31%. Researchers from Florida State University College of Medicine looked at data from 21 long-term studies, with a total of 600,000 participants, making it the largest study of its kind.
The study showed that loneliness increased the risk of having problems with thinking and memory, no matter the age or sex of the participants. It also linked loneliness to specific types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Most of the data used in the study came from richer Western countries. The lead author of the study said future research should include data from poorer countries to see how loneliness affects people in different situations. The study published in Nature Mental Health was inspired by the World Health Organization and the US Surgeon General, who said loneliness is a public health problem.
The lead author said the results were “not surprising” because other research has already connected loneliness with poor health. However, it is important to understand why and how loneliness increases the risk of dementia later in life. The study suggests that addressing (处理) loneliness could help diminish the risk of dementia.
According to the lead author, now that a link has been shown between loneliness and dementia, it is important to find out what causes loneliness. This could help find ways to both prevent or manage loneliness and support the general health and cognitive (认知的) health of aging adults.
12. What did the study find
A. Loneliness is a contributor to dementia.
B. Unhappiness affects functions of people’s brains.
C. Teenagers have a lower risk of suffering dementia.
D. Researchers have found the key factor in getting loneliness.
13. How did the researchers conduct the study in the process
A. By interviewing participants.
B. By conducting brain experiments.
C. By using data from poorer countries.
D. By analyzing data from long-time studies.
14. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Support. B. Reduce. C. Examine. D. Encounter.
15. What is suggested doing in the following study
A. Learning how to enjoy loneliness.
B. Finding ways to slow aging process.
C. Checking solutions to improving health.
D. Understanding what causes loneliness.

One day in 2009, Jane and her husband planned to drive from Boise to Jane’s hometown of Salt Lake City to visit her parents. But soon after they started their journey, their car broke down halfway. They didn’t have enough money to fix it. What’s worse, at the repair shop, they were told that it would take several days to repair it because there were no spare parts available. Just as they were wondering what to do, a woman named Alisa, who was at the repair shop, overheard their situation. She decided to help them.
“She offered to take us to Salt Lake City. The only thing she needed to do was go home to take care of her sick brother before leaving. She had to give her brother medicine at night,” Jane recalled, looking grateful.
Later that day, Alisa took the couple to her home. She bought them dinner and let them spend the night at her house. Jane and her husband thanked her for what she had done for them. They also watched Alisa take care of her brother. It was a loving and touching scene. Their admiration for Alisa grew. She told them that she felt like she did just the right thing that anyone would do in that situation.
The next day, early in the morning, Alisa drove them to Salt Lake City. But before they could fully thank her, she said goodbye and drove away. It was a little sad and regretful. After that, Jane and Alisa lost touch. But nearly 15 years later, Jane still thought about everything Alisa had done for them. She wanted to contact Alisa and express how much Alisa’s help had made a difference in her life. However, she couldn’t remember Alisa’s full name and the chance to find her seemed very small.

Suddenly, Jane had an idea. She could post the story on social media. After all, information on it could spread quickly. Without hesitation, she wrote her story, describing how Alisa helped her and her husband by letting them stay at her house and driving them home the next day. She also mentioned Alisa’s sick brother, who Alisa cared for with love and energy. At the end of the story, she sincerely hoped Alisa could recognize her and contact her. After making sure everything was okay, she clicked and posted it.
To Jane’s surprise, Alisa saw the story online and picked up her phone. Years after they first met, they reconnected through a video call. Within the first few minutes of chatting, and with tears in her eyes, Jane thanked Alisa again. She said that over the past years, inspired by Alisa’s kindness, she had always tried to be like Alisa and help others. Alisa was surprised and moved to tears. They decided to set a date for a happy reunion.
