At a high school in Indiana,a group of students are working on ideas to deal with climate change. One student,Murphy, suggests a large container filled with water that would heat up and produce steam (蒸汽) to power a car.Although the idea has limitations, climate scientist Ben Kravitz appreciates it,saying that steam power, while old, still works.
Kravitz developed a lesson with Paul Goddard,a research scientist, and Kirstin Milks,a high school science teacher. The lesson encourages students to think creatively about reducing pollution and solving global warming.Milks believes it’s important for students to not only understand the dangers of climate change but also feel confident to come up with solutions. She says,“These students will lead the future climate work.”
The lesson covers the basics of climate change, explaining that burning coal, oil, and gas gives off carbon dioxide (CO2),the main cause of global warming.Kravitz stresses that reducing greenhouse gas emissions (is the only lasting solution, but new technologies, such as wind and solar energy, are needed to make progress.
In the meantime,Kravitz and other scientists are exploring ways, such as climate engineering,to reduce the planet’s temperature.Climate engineering includes techniques like reflecting sunlight back into space or removing CO2 from the atmosphere. However, these ways come with risks, such as changing weather systems and rainfall patterns, leading to loss of biodiversity and impacting agriculture.Students are encouraged to think about such challenges when developing their ideas.
Through this lesson,Milks hopes to develop in students both awareness and optimism (乐观),showing them that they can play a role in solving global issues.

Psychological avoidance (心理回避) or avoiding emotions,a common way to escape painful and uncomfortable thoughts, feelings or situations, can harm the emotional well-being and personal growth of high school freshmen.Actually, psychological avoidance can lead to increased levels of anxiety and stress.Avoiding fears and worries only allows them to grow stronger.
By avoiding challenging situations,it prevents students from developing important skills, limiting their opportunities for self-discovery and improvement. The famous author J.K.Rowling once said,“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so carefully that you might as well not have lived at all.”
Psychological avoidance directly affects how well students do in their studies.Freshmen who turn to avoidance will always procrastinate,or even miss deadlines.By avoiding the necessary efforts and tasks required for learning, students may struggle to gain information, reducing the opportunity to succeed in grades.
Psychological avoidance can also cause stress or discomfort to relationships.High school students may avoid discussing their feelings with friends or family members, leading to misunderstandings and a breakdown in communication.Instead of dealing with their emotions, they hold back or hide themselves.Students miss out on the chance to deepen their connections with friends, family and peers (同龄人),making it harder for them to form healthy relationships.
Psychological avoidance may provide comfort for a short period, but in the long run it can have negative impacts on our mental health, personal growth, academic performance, relationships and other aspects of life.Breaking free from avoidance behaviors is important for academic success and self-confidence,and recognizing the harmful effects of avoidance is the first step.
32.What may happen to us by avoiding challenging situations according to J.K.Rowling
A.We may fail to discover our thoughts and feelings.
B.We may avoid failing at something more easily.
C.We may miss out on valuable learning experiences.
D.We may have opportunities to avoid fears and worries.

A.Put off tasks. B.Escape from reality.
C.Miss out on chances. D.Get out of control.
34.How does psychological avoidance affect students’ ability to form healthy relationships
A.It leads to difficult discussions.
B.It stops their connections with others.
C.It makes them fail to make new friends.
D.It causes them to escape further communication.
35.What will the following paragraph probably talk about
A.The harmful effects of psychological avoidance.

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon in the small town of Maple Ridge.I had just left George’s Hardware Store, carrying a few things I needed for some home repairs.I was a bit behind schedule,so I hurried to my car,put the items in the trunk (后备厢),and then shut it.
As I reached into my pocket for my keys,I realized that I didn’t have them.My heart sank as I rushed to the driver’s side door.Sure enough,my keys and phone were sitting on the front seat, locked inside.“Seriously ” I sighed, kicking the tire.
Just then,a teenager on a red bike rode up.He looked about 16,with messy brown hair and a worn backpack. His bike looked just as worn as the rest of him,but he pedaled (骑车) gracefully and effortlessly. And he had a friendly smile on his face.Noticing I was in trouble,he asked what had happened.
After I explained my situation,he offered his phone at once, suggesting that I call someone for help.Though grateful,I told him that even if I called my wife, who had the spare key,she wouldn’t be able to bring it since this was our only car.
The boy listened carefully, thought for a moment, and asked where my house was. When I told him it was on Morris Street,he glanced at his bike and suggested that he ride over, grab the spare key from my wife, and bring it back.
I hesitated, realizing it would be an 11-kilometre round trip, almost an hour’s ride, and I suddenly felt bad for the boy.But before I could say anything,he handed me his phone and insisted that I call my wife and tell her to have the key ready. His confidence and determination left me with little room to argue.I agreed and made the call.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
As soon as I hung up,the boy wasted no time.

根据文章最后一段中“Breaking free from avoidance behaviors is important for academic success and self-confidence,and recognizing the harmful effects of avoidance is the first step.”可推知,文章最后提到如何摆脱回避行为的第一步,因此,后文会说明克服心理回避的策略。故选C项。

写作
第一节
Thursday October 29th Sunny
The Double Ninth Festival of this year witnessed our active participation in the voluntary activity.
As scheduled,we gathered at the school gate early, bringing our cleaning stuff and a willing heart. Then we marched to the nursing home, where we helped mop the floor, dust the furniture and clean the windows. We chatted with the senior, and also played chess, practised tai chi and made dumplings together with them happily. The highlight of the day,no doubt, was the gala, brought by the Music Club members, which was meaningful and joyful.
Not only do we learn that old people do need our company, but also we experience the happiness and significance of helping others. It is a rewarding day and will benefit us in the long run.
第二节
As soon as I hung up,the boy wasted no time.He quickly dialed a number on his phone.I assumed it was to let his family know where he was going,so they wouldn’t worry. He adjusted his backpack, making sure it was secure for the long ride. Then, with a determined look,he got back on his bike and started pedaling towards Morris Street.I watched him until he was out of sight, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt for troubling him,but also admiring his sense of responsibility and willingness to help.
An hour later,as I saw the boy cycling toward me,my worries were gone.As he approached,I could see beads of sweat on his forehead, but his face was lit up with a sense of accomplishment.I thanked him sincerely, offering him some money as a token of my appreciation. He politely declined, saying it was just a small thing he could do to help out a neighbor. With that,he got back on his bike and rode off, leaving me with a profound sense of gratitude and a reminder that kindness still exists in this world.
