Theme parks are magical places where adults can feel like children who have the time of their lives. Here are four of the world’s top theme parks.
Alton Towers-Staffordshire, England
Alton Towers is the most visited theme park in the UK. It offers rides such as the popular 800-meter-long roller coaster. If you want to experience the feeling of flying, head for the famous ride Air, where you’ll need to avoid objects and trees as you soar through the sky. The park also features many other attractions, including live shows.
Tickets: 43 per adult and 21 per child. Children under the age of 3 enter for free.
Ferrari World-Yas Island, Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi in the Middle East is home to the world’s largest indoor theme park. Its main attraction is Formula Rossa — officially the fastest roller coaster in the world. The ride goes from 0 to 239 kilometers per hour in less than five seconds. The force is so strong that those brave enough to try it have to wear safety glasses.
Tickets: 40 per adult and half price for children under 12 meters tall.
Disneyland Paris-Paris, France
Disneyland Paris creates a fantasy world that both children and adults can enjoy. Disneyland Park gives children the chance to meet their favorite Disney characters and even explore Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Exciting roller coasters keep the whole family entertained for hours.
Tickets: 85 per adult and 81 per children. Children under the age of 3 can enjoy the Disney Parks, free of charge. For big fans of Disneyland, a Disneyland Pass is recommended — 289 for adults and 223 for children per year — allowing unlimited access 170 days per year.
Oakwood Theme Park-Pembrokeshire, Wales
If you’re eager to experience high-speed turns and sudden drops, this is the park for you. Be brave and try the Megafobia roller coaster, a wooden ride that’s sure to make you scream.

I’m James. Tired from work, I felt life was boring and I really needed something to change my focus. One night I came across a website recommending scuba (水肺) diving lessons. I hadn’t ever thought much about the idea of diving before; but its complete unfamiliarity sparked my interest; I decided to give it a shot I had my training lessons at an indoor swimming pool. After finishing the courses, I felt very happy and proud for getting over my first fear and discomfort of breathing underwater.
Knowing I hadn’t yet experienced what real scuba diving is all about, I spent hours researching where the best places to dive were. Before I knew it, I was on an airplane to Belize. Less than a day after I arrived, and just a few minutes into my first ocean dive, I was already diving straight down and found myself 80 feet (英尺) underwater. It’s the kind of extraordinary water having such great visibility (能见度) that you can see clearly for hundreds of feet around you.
Within minutes our 4-person dive group was surrounded by numerous nurse sharks, a moray eel (海鳗), large groupers and sea turtles. I was madly in love with scuba diving. As we reached the bottom, a lone nurse shark swam right under me. More started to arrive. Just as I was shooting pictures of the action and not paying attention to anything or anyone else around. I looked up to see a bright green threatening face headed straight for me. He wasn’t the least bit shy. He had apparently never heard of personal space. After he decided to swim by me without causing any bodily harm, I was both relieved and excited.
This will always be that one special dive that changed everything and I get to watch it any time I find myself missing the water.
24. What pushed James to try scuba diving
A. He had taken some diving lessons. B. He lived in a flat near a swimming pool.
C. He wanted to escape from work exhaustion D. He had always been interested in water sports.
25. How was James’s first ocean dive
A. He hadn’t trained for it.
B. He didn’t adopt a gradual strategy.
C. He immediately felt comfortable and saw no fear.
D. He stayed near the surface and didn’t go very deep.
26. Why did James mention sea animals
A. To underline their diversity. B. To introduce their wildness.
C. To demonstrate diving appeal. D. To promote ocean exploration.
27. What is the suitable title for the text
A. How deep down I swam B. How I overcame fear
C. What an underwater thrill D. What a beautiful excitement
As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers.
There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I usually think they like me less than they really do — and most of us feel this way too.
A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded.
Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.
The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers in labs, first-year college students getting to know dorm mates over months, and community members in workshops. In every case, people underestimated others’ liking. Even as dorm mates formed lasting friendships, the gap still persisted.
The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.
28. Why does the author mention his childhood experience
A. To show how his character changed.
B. To explain what he was like when he was young.
C. To show an example of why people are shy of communication.
D. To stress the important role of a mother in one’s childhood.
29. What does the underlined word “unfounded” probably mean
A. Careless. B. Baseless. C. Selfless. D. Meaningless.
30. What do we know about the liking gap from the text
A. It shows what strangers really think of us.
B It begins and ends quickly among strangers.
C. It disappears when strangers get to know each other.
D. It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.
31. What would the author probably discuss next
A. More daily-life cases showing the “liking gap”.
B. The author’s recent attempts to deal with his shyness.
C. Details of the dorm mate experiment.
D. Practical ways to help people narrow the “liking gap”.
Animals appear to predict (预测) earthquakes by sensing electricity in the air — the first study to find reliable evidence of the phenomenon has shown.
Cameras showed an “amazing” drop in the number of animals up to 23 days before a major quake hit their rainforest home at Yanachaga National Park in Peru. Lead scientist Dr Rachel Grant, from Anglia Ruskin University, said, “The results showed that just before the earthquake, animals’ activity dropped right down.”
On a normal (正常的) day the cameras placed around Yanachaga National Park record between 5 and 15 animals. But in the 23 days before the earthquake, the number of animals dropped to five or fewer per day. No animals were photographed at all on five of the seven days immediately before the quake.
Another study showed that animal activity remained normal in the park over a different period when seismic (地震的) activity was low. Co-author, professor Friedemann Freund, said, “The cameras were located at an altitude of 900 meters. If air ionization (电离) occurred, the animals would escape to the valley below, where there were fewer positive ions (离子). With their ability to sense their environment, animals can help us understand small changes that occur before major earthquakes.”
Other evidence suggested that before the earthquake, the air around the high mountain sites is filled with positive ions that can be produced when rocks are placed under stress. Positive ions have been known to cause ill effects in humans as well as animals. Scientists believe the animals were made to feel uncomfortable by the positive ions, leading them to avoid the area. They are thought to have escaped to lower ground, where the air was less ionized. The findings may help experts develop better short-term seismic forecasts.
32. How did scientists conduct the study
A. By comparing different animals’ habits.
B. By observing animals in high mountains.
C. By analyzing the photos of animals they obtained.
D. By explaining the positive ion phenomenon.
33. What usually happens before earthquakes according to the text
A. The ground at a lower altitude is less ionized.
B. Cameras normally record more animals per day.
C. The air is filled with positive ions.
D. The activity of animals before earthquakes is normal.
34. What can we learn from the text
A. The findings make for long-term seismic forecasts.
B. Animals tend to be uneasy with more positive ions.
C. Positive ions make humans and animals nervous.
D. All the animals remain abnormal before the earthquake.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Negative Influence of Positive Ions B. Ions’ Destruction to the Environment
C. Animals’ Behavior Before Earthquakes D. Creatures’ Ability to Predict Natural Disasters
