Washing clothes is easy for most people living in cities, as washing machines do the job. However, in the countryside or poor places, people have to wash their clothes by hand, as they don’t have enough money to buy a washing machine.
Now, a new bamboo washing machine might help them solve this problem. The machine is a simpler version (版本) of a traditional washing machine. However, it uses the natural flow of water instead of electricity. It has a wooden rotation shaft (转轴) in the center and a bamboo drum outside. You just put the machine in a river and water will go into the bottom (底部) of the machine and make the main drum turn. This makes water flow that cleans clothes.
A 7-member team from the School of Design at Dalian Minzu University made the machine. Because of this, they won the “Best of the Best” prize at the 2020 Red Dot Awards (红点奖). Yu Yue, one of these students, said that the best thing about the machine is that it’s cheap and easy to make. “We give people the rotation shaft and teach them how to set up the machine. They can find bamboo and make it into drums. If there is no bamboo, they can also use materials like wood.”
The team spent more than half a year working on the machine. They had many team meetings to change the machine at least four times. But in the end, they were happy with the results.
61.Why do people in poor areas have to wash clothes by hand
A.Because they don’t like washing machines.

There’s nothing to be surprised at: in cities and even small towns in China, people can enjoy fast and convenient delivery (快递) service. 66 —visitors at the Great Wall are able to receive deliveries such as drinking water, food and emergency medicines within minutes.
The Badaling section of the Great Wall was first opened to tourists in 1958. 67 And it received more than 200 million visitors from home and abroad.
At the Badaling section, there’s a place called the South Ninth Tower. The area was opened to the public at the end of 2023. It mainly hosts activities such as outdoor hiking, adventure crossings, Great Wall studies and travel photography. To keep the original (原始的) looks of the Great Wall, there aren’t any shops. 68
To solve this problem, the Badaling Great Wall scenic area worked with a delivery company to start the service. At the South Ninth Tower, visitors can scan a QR code with their mobile phones to place orders, and the drones (无人机) will deliver supplies within five minutes. 69 After the delivery hours, these drones help carry waste.
In addition to the drone delivery service, visitors can also enjoy the wonderful view of the Great Wall from a helicopter or a fixed-wing aircraft. 70
A.Since then, it has become very popular.
B.However, here’s the news that may blow your mind.
C.The drone delivery service runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
D.These services will surely draw more visitors to the Badaling Great Wall.
E.Therefore it is difficult for visitors to get supplies there.

About 2300 years ago, the area around Chengdu had bad floods in spring every year. Flood water from the mountains flowed (流) down the Minjiang River and covered the land. Luckily, the Qin governor, Li Bing, was a water engineer. The king of Qin provided the money and asked the governor to solve the problem.
Helped by his son and tens of thousands of workers from the area, Li Bing built a man-made island in the middle of the river. This island was shaped like a fish and it divided the water into an inner and an outer river. The inner river was deeper than but not as wide as the outer river. It took four years to build the island.
Li Bing also cut a new channel (运河) through Mount Yulei. This channel would take water away to irrigate the land in the flat farmland below. The rock of the mountain was very hard and difficult to cut. Li Bing used fire to heat the rock and then water to cool it quickly. This made the rock break into smaller pieces which could be carried away more easily. Cutting the channel took eight years!
After Li Bing’s work was successful, there were no more floods, and the Dujiangyan irrigation system (灌溉系统) allowed the farmers to grow more crops. The river flowed naturally and because there was no dam, ships and fish could pass freely. Sichuan became the most productive area in China, as it still is today. Today, scientists and visitors from all over the world come to look at this wonderful example of engineering. This work and the name of Li Bing live on.
The 81 of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System
Reason Flood water from the mountains flowed down the Minjiang River and covered the land around Chengdu in spring every year.
Process It took four years for Li Bing to build a man-made fish-like island in the middle of the river. And it divided the water into an inner and an outer river. The inner river was deeper but not 82 than the outer river. Li Bing also cut a new channel (运河) through Mount Yulei. The channel took water away to irrigate the land in the flat farmland below. Because the rock of the mountain was very hard and difficult to cut, he used fire to make the rock break into smaller pieces, and then carry them away more easily. It took eight years to cut the channel.
83 Because of the 84 of Li Bing’s work, there were no more floods, farmers could grow more crops in Dujiangyan. The river flowed naturally, ships and fish could pass freely. Sichuan has become the most productive area in China. Today, scientists and visitors from 85 the world come to visit this wonderful example of engineering. This work and the name of Li Bing live on.

Rules I Agree with
Nothing can be done without rules. In our daily life, there are some rules of great use.
I strongly agree with the rule of “No mobile phones during study time.” When we are studying, mobile phones can easily draw our attention. This rule not only helps us develop good study habits but also makes us more self-controlled.
I also agree with other rules. For example, read for at least 30 minutes a day. Reading opens our minds and allows us to know more about the world.
I think, by following these important rules, our lives will become better and better.
