The air in Zhoucheng Village, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, is thick with the earthy scent of plant extracts used in the tie-dyeing (扎染) technique of the Bai ethnic group. In a sunny courtyard, Duan Yuan tests the temperature of a deep VAT (大桶) of dye moving with a living, breathing blue.
For him, indigo (靛蓝) is far more than a color; it’s a symbol of identity and his inheritance (继承物), and the thread that ties generations. Despite modernization pressures, Zhoucheng Village remains a stronghold of the ancient tie-dye craft, where Duan grew up in a family-run indigo factory. Home to over 200 workshops and 4,000 craftsmen, it is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.
Duan’s father, Duan Shukun, a provincial-level inheritor of the craft, learned to tie basic knots at five and mastered the entire process by twelve. His mother, Duan Yinkai, is a national inheritor. In 1998, the couple rebuilt their ancestral (祖传的) Puzhen Tie-Dye Workshop. Duan Yinkai expanded the traditional skills of 30-odd stitching (缝纫) techniques to more than 100, while Duan Shukun moved beyond the iconic blue, experimenting with gardenia fruit, saffron, and sappanwood to create a new palette (调色板) of natural colors.
Duan and his wife, Yang Zhirui, joined the family business, breathing new life into the old craft. “What attracts me is its limitless possibilities for designs and patterns,” Yang says, applying simple design ideas to create modern tie-dye clothes.
Beyond their workshops, the family has invested in safeguarding the craft’s legacy. In 2008, they improved the struggling Zhoucheng tie-dye factory and transformed it into a museum that combines exhibitions and immersive experiences. They have preserved more than 1,800 nearly lost patterns, 3,600 models and 700 antique (古老的) pieces. Every year, over 200,000 visitors go to the museum.
4. What is the main purpose of the vivid setting in paragraph

A. Traditional and honest. B. Creative and devoted.

While daydreaming is often regarded as a lack of focus, new research suggests it can be a powerful tool for solving tough problems. A joint U.S.-Netherlands research team found that curious individuals who allow their minds to wander around work challenges are more likely to experience strong epiphanies (顿悟). These flashes of insight not only spark (触发) innovative solutions but can also renew a sense of meaning in one’s career.
“For years, I was attracted by epiphanies but found the research challenges difficult,” said Erik Dane, a professor at Washington University. The team’s findings may encourage workplaces to adopt workshops that support mind wandering as a path to breakthrough moments.
The research involved business students and professionals in three studies. Participants (参加者) attended workshops designed to strengthen leadership, which included reflecting on key life events and personal legacies (遗产). Importantly, they were also given intentional time for mind wandering, which was treated not as a mistake in focus but as a valuable part of the problem-solving process.
The results were clear: participants who daydreamed while addressing challenges were more likely to gain meaningful insights. Those naturally drawn to complex problems benefited the most, using daydreaming not as an escape but to find new pathways forward.
“Mind wandering is useful because it redirects attention from existing solutions and helps people engage in imaginative thinking,” said colleague Markus Baer. He added that it provides a more playful and liberating approach compared to conventional (传统的) methods Dane agreed, noting, “When you daydream, you’re more likely to let go of assumptions and think in flexible ways. This opens the door to strong epiphanies.” Stepping back with free imagination can deliver fresh solutions and a stronger sense of purpose.
The researchers argue that organizations and business schools should recognize this value by offering workshops to develop the skill. For individuals seeking career guidance, looking inward through intentional reflection and daydreaming could help create the very breakthroughs they seek.
8. What did the research find about epiphanies from daydreaming
A. They can cause a lack of focus. B. They can lead to creative solutions.
C. They can reduce the sense of career meaning. D. They can result in curious individuals.
9. What was a key part of the workshops in the three studies
A. Intentional time for mind wandering. B. Continuous focus on existing solutions.
C. Group discussion of personal legacies. D. Active avoidance of complex problems.
10. What can be inferred about conventional methods from the text
A. They may create new solutions. B. They help control assumptions.
C. They may limit creative thinking. D. They better address complex problems.
11. What do the researchers suggest organizations do
A. Create playful approaches and find methods.
B. Develop daydreaming skills and make breakthroughs.
C. Recognize the value of daydreaming and offer training.
D. Gain meaningful insights into daydreaming and seek reflection.

Randall Munroe, who used to work on robots at NASA, explains science in a fun and easy- to-understand way in his book What If Once you get used to his unique writing style, you can go on many amazing trips with him and learn while laughing.
And you will certainly learn. There is a sort of joy in getting real answers to the strange questions Munroe is sent every day. However unusual the topics are, Randall takes them seriously. For example, if you set a meat-eating dinosaur (恐龙) free in New York City, how many humans would it have to eat to meet its need each day Munroe thinks New York could support about 350 dinosaurs. That’s good to know, but we hope we don’t need to use this information.
The book’s cover is a full-size picture of what the Earth would look like if the oceans were removed. The back has some interesting facts you might want to know before buying it (eating the book would give you about 2,300 calories (卡路里) if you could take in paper). Thanks, Randall!
Although Munroe knows a lot and can perfectly explain the science behind the questions, What If is not a textbook. When asked what would happen when you threw a baseball at light-speed, he says there would be a shockwave expanding (膨胀) outwards, and quickly moves on. He is answering the question after all, but if you are looking for detailed classroom- style descriptions of what Munroe is talking about, you’re out of luck.
But that’s what makes it great. What If is light enough to attract you, but deep enough to make you curious about science one chapter at a time. If you’re willing to go along with Munroe’s ideas and guesses, you’re in for an exciting journey of the mind.
12. What can be found in the book What If
A. Stories of fun journeys. B. Pictures of the oceans.
C. Latest scientific experiments. D. Discussions of unreal situations.
13. How does Munroe deal with the questions in his book
A. He offers direct answers. B. He pays no attention.
C. He recommends textbooks. D. He digs into many possibilities.
14. What is Munroe’s writing style like
A Formal and detailed. B. Light but confusing.
C. Humorous and educational. D. Imaginative but unclear.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. What If : A Collection of Funny Science Jokes
B. What If : A Scientific Adventure with Munroe
C. What If : A Guidebook on Healthy Eating Habits
D What If : A Question-based Book about Life
