Rongchang Xiabu, is an ancient handmade cloth that started in the Han Dynasty in Rongchang district, Chongqing. It’s a cloth 1 summer and also known for its light and breathable quality. The thin material lets air move through easily, making it a perfect 2 on hot days. Last week, I visited a local workshop and learned how this special cloth was made.
C
It begins with ramie(苎麻). Workers carefully pick the tallest plants in May. These plants grow best in Chongqing’s rainy weather. Then comes the most 3 step: peeling the bark(剥皮) by hand. Even the best workers need to be very careful to cut the plants into thin threads(线) without breaking them. It takes three years of training to 4 this skill.

Next, workers use wooden looms(织布机) to turn the threads into cloth. They work day and night and the “click-clack” sound of the machines 5 stops. What amazed me was 6 teamwork—some prepared materials while others controlled the looms.

Today, we should do something to pass down this skill to young people. Over 50 schools have 9 Xiabu clubs where students can learn more about it. Teachers say these clubs help the young know about traditional skills. As I left, Mr. Wang smiled and said, “Traditional art and modern life are not opposite. They can work together and always 10 well.”

①On March 10, 2025, Zhiyuan Robotics introduced Genie Operator-1(GO-1), a new kind of robot brain. This amazing model is a big step forward in the field of embodied intelligence(具身智能).
②Peng Zhihui, who used to work at Huawei, created GO-1. He left Huawei in 2022 to start Zhiyuan Robotics, with the dream of making robots that truly understand human needs. With support from companies like BYD and Sequoia China, his company has quickly become a robotics leader.
③GO-1 uses a special system called Vision-Language-Latent-Action(ViLLA, “视觉-语言-潜在动作”架构), which has two parts. One part helps robots see and understand what they see. The other part helps them plan and do actions. This special system allows GO-1 to learn and adapt(适应) better than traditional robots.
④GO-1 learns tasks by watching videos. For example, after watching a tea-making video a few times, it can remember the steps like boiling water and adding tea leaves. This copies how humans get skills, making training faster and more natural than old programming ways.
⑤Moreover, when mistakes happen, GO-1 improves through self-correction. If it spills(洒) water while moving a cup, it corrects its move to avoid future errors. This trial-and-error process, similar to how children learn, allows the robot to perfect actions without always needing help from humans.
⑥More importantly, GO-1 get experience from different places. It can use skills learned in one place to do tasks in another, such as using book-organizing skills from a study room to clean a library shelf.
⑦However, bringing GO-1 from labs to real life can be challenging. In messy homes or crowded streets, robots may fail to recognize half-hidden
objects or misunderstand unclear orders. These situations require smarter sensors(传感器) and quicker thinking.
⑧Luckily, engineers are working hard to improve it. By adding new sensors, GO-1 can now find lost keys under sofa cushions and even say “please wait” when it isn’t sure about the instructions. With these upgrades, robots will become safer and more thoughtful helpers.
⑨As Peng Zhihui said, “Embodied intelligence will reshape our world, just like smartphones did.” With GO-1, we are taking a big step towards a future where robots are not just tools, but our helpful partners.
( )11. What’s the purpose in mentioning Peng Zhihui in Paragraph 2
A. To explain how his working experience at Huawei influences GO-1.
B. To compare Huawei’s AI research with his company’s technology.
C. To show his role as GO-1’s creator and his company’s rapid growth.
D. To express his thanks for the support from other famous companies.

( )12. Which scene is probably NOT true for a GO-1 robot’s abilities according to the passage
A. It can learn to boil the eggs by watching videos, copying human steps.
B. It can practice lifting the cups more carefully when water drops from them.
C. It can divide books by color after learning desk organization from videos.
D. It can finish the paper work in an office even with unclear instructions.
D
( )13. What’s the writer’s attitude(态度) to GO-1
He worries about GO-1’s safety.
B. He doubts GO-1’s value in real life.

Dear friends,
Last month, we held the “Discover the Countryside” activity. What wonderful things did you experience and do during your time in the countryside And how did you feel Please share your stories.
Emma
I used to have little interest in country life, considering it a bit boring. But last weekend, I went to my grandparents’ farm in the countryside. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by the fresh smell of the earth and the singing of birds. I helped my grandparents feed the chickens and collect eggs. It was such a fun experience! In the afternoon, I walked along the small paths in the fields. The golden wheat danced gently in the wind, looking like a sea of gold. I realized that country life is full of simplicity and beauty. I can’t wait to visit the peaceful countryside again.
Mike
When my classmate asked me how I felt after a day-long stay in the countryside, I said, “I felt relaxed and connected to nature.” With the help of a farmer, I went fishing by the small pond in the village. Sitting quietly by the water, waiting patiently for the fish to take the bait(鱼饵), I forgot all my stress in my schoolwork. I also saw a beautiful rainbow after a light rain. The colors in the sky were so lively that I was fully amazed. By experiencing these things, I felt a deep sense of peace and a closer connection with nature.
Sophia
During the holiday, my family and I visited a rural homestay(民宿). It was an amazing experience! The host family was very warm-hearted. They taught us how to make traditional rural snacks. We made some delicious sweet potato cakes. In the evening, we sat in the courtyard and watched the stars. The starry sky was so clear and beautiful. It was something I could never see in the city. After I went back home, I still miss the peaceful and comfortable environment of the countryside. It made me understand the meaning of a slow-paced life.
15. Does Emma still think country life is boring

16. What did Mike see after the light rain in the countryside

No. /No, she doesn’t.
He saw a beautiful rainbow (with lively colors). /A beautiful rainbow.
17. What have the three people learned in common from their countryside trips

They have all learned to realize the simplicity and peace of country life. Besides, they all came to enjoy/appreciate the beauty of nature. Also, they all had the chance to connect with the local people and feel close to the local country lifestyle.
18. What do you think of their experiences and why Choose one to discuss. (about 30 words)

We humans have been changing the environment around us for a very long time. A recent study found that humans in Africa may have used fire to prevent forest regrowth as early as 85,000 years ago. We change the animals around us, too. Most famously turning wild wolves into dogs, maybe as early as 40,000 years ago.
And our effect on animals hasn’t stopped, right up to the present day. Because as we change the world, animals have to change if they want to survive.
For one example, consider how the roads we drive on could be changing the birds that fly over them. A study of swallows in Nebraska found that, from 1983 to 2022, the birds‘ wings got shorter—probably because having smaller wings made them better at avoiding cars. The number of swallows killed by cars actually went down over the study period, even as the total swallow population increased—and most of the swallows that were killed
have longer wings. Ivory hunting may also have led elephants to be born without tusks(the teeth of the elephants). Both male and female African elephants usually have tusks. But half of the female elephants were born without tusks, unlike those before. Living close to humans may even make some animals smarter. City raccoons(浣熊) are better than country ones at opening bottles to get food. City raccoons have also learned to keep smaller fields so they don’t have to cross major roads, where they’re in greater danger!
As we see these changes in animals, we’re reminded that animals are adapting to(适应) our world. What about trying to adapt too Maybe slow down on roads for crossing animals, or leave part of our gardens for wildlife. The earth belongs to all of us—let’s share it!
This article focuses on 19 on the environment and animals. For example, we turned wild wolves into dogs as early as 40,000 years ago. Today, animals are still changing in order to survive. From 1983 to 2022, swallows in Nebraska has evolved shorter wings, leading to fewer roadkill deaths. And 20 , so half of African female elephants are now born without tusks.

Getting hugged by someone you care about can be an encouraging experience. Research has shown that hugs can strengthen(加强) our social connections, improve our emotional(情感的) state and reduce feelings of loneliness and sadness. They can even help to lower stress levels and improve our health.
Unluckily, not everyone has the chance to be hugged whenever they need it. So, how can this problem be solved One idea that scientists have suggested is developing social robots that can hug people. These robots could probably offer lonely people the positive advantages of getting hugged without the need to know a person who hugs them.
However, creating a hug robot that is loved by people is no simple task. For example, if the robot is too large or has a design like something intimidating, people may feel uneasy about hugging it. Therefore, it is important for researchers to have further studies on the design which should include acceptance and comfort.
A recent study in the International Journal of Social Robotics focused on the development of Moffully-Ⅱ, a newly developed hug robot. It looks like a large, human-shaped teddy bear and stands at 2 meters tall. During a hug, it is able to move its arms and perform different gestures(手势). Copying the actions that humans usually do during hugs, such as tapping someone on the back, is necessary for making the hug feel real.
During the study, volunteers who got hugs from Moffully-Ⅱ preferred hugs with gestures over those without gestures. They sensed the robot as friendlier and safer when it made gestures, and they found the hugs to be more enjoyable in general.
While some people may feel uncomfortable with the idea of hugging a robot instead of a human, hug robots offer those who are in need of hugs another way to meet their needs. This includes those in nursing homes who hope for hugs, even if they are provided by a robot.

Li Baoguo was a college teacher in Hebei Province. But he wasn’t happy just to give lessons in a classroom. Li played a part in helping farmers and improving their agricultural techniques(农业技术) in all his life. In 2016, the year he died, President Xi said he was like the “old man Yugong on the Taihang Mountains”.
In fact, Li did one of his most important things in the Taihang Mountains. He heard that there were many poor people in the villages. Li knew that the villagers wanted to do something good to the lifeless mountains but had difficulty growing crops(庄稼) and trees there.
To solve this, he started teaching the villagers to dig the land and grow apple trees and other crops. When Li first started working with the villagers, they were careless about some of his techniques. So, he organized more than 800 training sessions(课程) and wrote books to show them how his ideas could help them. Slowly, people started to believe him and follow his advice on farming. After 1981, it took him more than 200 days of every year to work with the villagers. At last, people there covered the mountains with trees and crops successfully, which helped the villagers make money. Li worked in the countryside for 35 years and helped about 100,000 farmers get themselves out of poverty(贫穷).

A new study has found that 176 kinds of birds around the world are building their nests(鸟巢) with rubbish from humans, such as cigarette butts(烟头) and plastic bags. Aren’t birds supposed to use things in nature, like grass, leaves and other parts of trees, to build their homes Yes, they used to.
But now things are different. A group of European scientists looked into about 35,000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth.
Scientists found that some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have some chemicals(化学物质), so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the birds warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more problems to birds. The unhealthy chemicals in cigarettes hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives. To make matters worse, if the cigarette fire is not off when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set the nest on fire. Seabirds were found to add fishing nets to their nests, which may also cause danger to themselves, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves.
Our friends in the air are living a hard life because of some human activities. To improve the situation, people shouldn’t be allowed to smoke or leave rubbish behind when there are many trees around. And to make the idea work, people must receive punishment for breaking the rules. We can also play our part by building artificial(人工的) nests that are warm and safe for birds to use instead of forcing them to build their own.
Recently I read an article about 19 . A study found 176 bird species worldwide now use human rubbish like cigarette butts and plastic bags 20 to build nests. These materials offer benefits, such as keeping insects away, offering protection for baby birds and 21 . However, they also pose risks. Cigarette chemicals harm baby birds or hurt them, and so do the fishing nets. To solve the problem, people should avoid 22 , and build artificial nests for birds.

One day, a young man was walking in the desert. The sun was shining brightly overhead, making the sand beneath his feet extremely hot. He had been walking for a long time and felt very thirsty. His throat was dry, and his body was begging for water.
Just then, as he was struggling to move forward, he suddenly found a spring of delicious and clear water. The water was welling out from the ground, forming a small pool and looking so inviting. It was so cool and sweet for a man who had expected it for such a long time that he quickly bent
down and drank a lot in one go. The refreshing water seemed to bring him back to life. After quenching his thirst(解渴), he thought of his village and his kind teacher who had taught him in middle school. He decided to share this wonderful discovery with his teacher. So he took out his old leather(皮制的) bottle and filled it with the clear water carefully, imagining how happy his teacher would be when receiving this special gift.
After a four-day journey in the hot sun and through the endless sand dunes(沙丘), he finally arrived at his village. He rushed to his teacher’s house and gave the water to the old man. The old man, with a warm smile,
took a deep drink. He then smiled even more warmly and thanked his student sincerely for the sweet water. The young man, seeing his teacher’s happy expression, returned to his home with a light and happy heart.
Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. The student took a drink and spat it out at once, saying it was terrible. In fact, it had gone bad because of the old leather bottle which had influenced the taste of the water. The student was confused and asked his teacher, “Master, the water was bad and it was bitter. Why did you lie to him that you liked it ”
The teacher replied with a kind look in his eyes, “You only tasted the water while I tasted the gift. The water was full of love and kindness from my dear student. In my heart, nothing could be sweeter than this.”

When you need to remember something, do you write it down on paper Probably not—you are more likely to just type(打字) some words with your phone, right
For years, new technology from computers to tablets(平板电脑) has been taking the place of writing by hand. In 2016, schools in Finland even stopped teaching writing. But is our move away from writing by hand influencing our brains A new study says it might be.
Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology asked 36 university students to write down information using either a pen or a keyboard. They also looked at the students‘ electrical brain activity, and found that their brain connectivity patterns(连接模式) were much more complex(复杂的) when the students wrote by hand than when they used a keyboard. Past research has found that this connectivity is the key to helping the brain have memories and record new information.
One of the researchers, Audrey van der Meer, said that writing letters by hand also helps children learn the difference between very similar letters like
“b” and “d”, because their bodies get to feel what it’s like to make the shapes.
According to the researchers, it’s important for students to keep learning how to write by hand. It’s also important to know what kind of writing is best for what situation.
“Students learn more and remember better when taking handwritten notes, while using a computer with a keyboard may be more practical when they write a long paper or passage,” Audrey van der Meer said.

Have you ever heard “You never get a second chance to make a first impression(印象) ” It may sound like an unusual piece of advice, but it is true—the impression someone has of you when meeting you for the first time will probably influence how that person treats you or reacts(回应) to you in the future.
What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create that first impression in about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time, by the time you have told your name or shaken hands, the other person has already had an opinion about the kind of person you are.
So how do you make a good first impression All things grown-ups tell you, such as being polite and being well-dressed, are very important.
However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is your face. Smiling and looking like you are happy will almost always leave a
positive impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.
Last but not least, you need to look at the other person while you talk. It shows that you care about what the other person is saying. It makes the conversation more enjoyable for both of you as well. This simple act can really improve your communication skills and strengthen your relationships.
Don’t worry about not making a good first impression! You can still use the tips. Everyone can try again. Although it takes time, people will find how nice you are. Every meeting is a new chance to show your good side. You can do it!

In the city center, firefighters quickly get ready when they hear the alarm. Within 60 seconds they are dressed and rushing to a burning building. Even though they know the floors might collapse(坍塌) and the ceilings could fall, they still have to go inside. One wrong decision might mean death.
Who would do a job like that Ask firefighter Sam Telfer. One month ago, he signed up for the job. He used to sit in an office of a software company, but now he is trained to break into rooms full of smoke and heat and come up with a rescue strategy.
“I wanted a job where I could be active, work with my hands, learn new practical skills, and face different challenges every day.” That’s quite an understatement(保守说法) to describe a career that requires you to keep a cool head while fighting against a fire. But Telfer says that flames(火焰) and nerves can be controlled in the same way: through continuous physical and mental(思想的) training.
Telfer was a runner in college, but now he trains his lungs(肺) for dangerous situations instead of races. He has to climb hundreds of steps while wearing 34 kilograms of gear, like oxygen tanks. He also needs to carry
unconscious people to safety. No matter what he’s doing, he has to control his breathing. Panic(恐慌) will only waste his limited air supply.
His survival depends on more than just being physically fit. Firefighters need a lot of mental preparation too. When they are not dealing with emergencies, they study many subjects like emergency medicine, structural design, and chemical reactions. They practice quickly assessing(评估) the changing conditions of a fire.
Shifting from a software expert to a first responder was a big change for Telfer. But he says, “I have never once felt that this isn’t the right job for me.” Even though danger might be waiting every day, his body and mind are trained to stay calm, even in the middle of a fierce fire.

China’s Double Ninth Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar every year. It is a traditional folk holiday focusing on good health and long life. Let’s take a look at some keywords which can help us have a better understanding of this festival.
Nine
Nine is an important number in Chinese culture because its pronunciation means “long” in Chinese. According to the Book of Changes(《易经》), the number six is considered yin while nine is yang. The ninth day of the ninth lunar month in the Chinese calendar features two nines, so the day is given the Chinese name “Chongyang”.
Plants
The cornel(茱萸) and chrysanthemum(菊花) have to be mentioned. Cornel, famous in traditional Chinese medicine, is widely planted in the north and south of China. Ancient people believed that wearing the cornel on this day could help prevent illness and avoid disasters(灾难).
They also believed that the chrysanthemum could drive away bad luck and prevent one from getting a cold in late autumn. So, drinking chrysanthemum wine has always been a traditional custom at this festival.
Elders
In 1989, the Chinese government sets the double ninth day as a day for the elders. To encourage all to respect and love them, it actively encourages the whole society to hold folk activities to honor the old. Besides, it puts more money into protecting cultural heritage(遗产) to help this traditional festival develop so as to build a beautiful, age-friendly society.

Thinking outside the box is a metaphor(隐喻) often used to describe different, or creative thinking. It shows up in simple things like using paper to make “planes” instead of just writing on it.
The term was first used in 1975 by a company. The Human Resource(HR) offered a 9-dot puzzle to the interviewees who were asked to connect all the dots with only 4 lines. This task actually requires some lateral thinking(跨界
思维), so the HR encouraged the interviewees to “think outside the box”. In this case, they needed to look beyond the box and create something else.
To draw those 4 lines, you have to first use up all the ways within the box. Only then can you realize that the problem is the box itself. You need to understand the problem, then solve it.
To think outside the box, you must look beyond a narrow view. Otherwise(否则), you wouldn’t find the answer. Thinking outside the box can also force you to widen your horizon. Then you will focus more on opportunities and the willingness to take risks, which encourages people to
grow. When we stay in our comfort zone(舒适地带), taking risks, growing, and challenging the normal seem much more frightening. So try to become an effective leader, or a team member.
Whatever you do, think twice: First in the box, then outside the box. Outside-the-box thinking often breaks the routines(常规) and may sound ridiculous(荒谬的). But without thinking outside the box, these people, like Thomas Edison, Isaac Newton, wouldn’t have changed the world in the way they did. Just allow yourself to start thinking outside the box. You’ll be glad you did.

I was 68 when I first stepped onstage as a stand-up comedian. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. But after the 9/11 terrorist attack, I started to think about trying comedy because I realized that people needed to laugh again. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally collected the courage to get up onstage. That first time was terrifying! I could expect what the audience(观众) would think of me the first time they saw me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, and even harder as someone old enough to be
their grandmother. A booking agent said, “Perhaps you were in the wrong place.” As I stepped onstage that first time, people were clearly surprised and doubtful to see an old woman. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were finally laughing properly. After the whole performance, the same agent clapped his hand and presented a bunch of flowers to me, saying, “Oh, you were so great.” I was more attracted by this job.
Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody, I’m almost 88 years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
I realize that what I am determined to do is much more than my own personal growth. After a show, people, young and old, come up to me saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as I am when they reach my age. I’m pleased that I can show others that, as an older person, you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
Last year, I was recognized as the oldest woman stand-up comedian in the world. But I have no plan to stop my comedy work. I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh.

We are taught from birth to use food to express our feelings. We plan family dinners, treat our friends from far away and make traditional food during festivals.
But emotional eating is different. For example, you may eat a lot more than usual when you fail an important exam. You might eat a lot when experiencing the stress from diseases. The bad news is that emotional eating
will not help you drive away any terrible feelings but might only lower your energy, disturb your sleep and weaken your immunity(免疫力). Luckily, here are some things you can do to avoid emotional eating.
First, understand what you are experiencing. If your stomach is growling(咆哮), it is a sign of physical hunger. But if there is no such sign and you still feel hungry, you’d better do a mental check of yourself: Am I experiencing happiness, sadness, fear, or anger If your answer is yes, it is not your body but your mind that is asking for food.
Moreover, when to eat also has a great influence. You should eat meals around the same time each day, and leave about three to five hours apart between meals. If you stick to this plan, you can not only avoid mindless eating but also control your blood sugar and insulin(胰岛素).
Last but not least, remember to avoid blaming(责备) yourself for emotional eating. This only heightens emotions, which can increase the drive to eat. Sometimes a mistake can be a chance to learn how to deal with a similar situation in the future. So try to use a gentle self-talk next time.
Follow these suggestions from now on! You can eat well even under great stress!
SUMMARY
Emotional eating means 19 . It can harm our health by lowering energy, disturbing sleep, and weaken immunity. Here is something you can do. First, tell whether you are experiencing 20 .
