For many, especially teenage girls, change can be terrifying. It often takes weeks, months, or even longer to adjust to new experiences. This is true for a significant milestone that so many students fear: the beginning of high school.
When I started high school, it felt like my entire world had turned upside down. Since I came from a small middle school, the leap to a larger all-girls school was stressful. I worried about fitting in this new environment. To make matters even more daunting, my best friend chose a different school, leaving me to brave this new chapter (篇章) on my own.
Luckily, our school worked hard to ensure freshmen felt comfortable during their first year of high school. On the very first day, we took part in Tiger Camp, a camp designed to ease us into high school life. We played team-building games, met our small group leaders, and got to know our classmates better. By the end of the camp, I already felt a sense of belonging.
Once the school year started, one of the first major events I attended was the Club Carnival, which introduced us high school freshmen to a wide variety of extracurricular activities here. I joined the Friendly Fashion Club and a book club, both of which gave me a chance to meet like-minded students.
After I adapted (适应) to the new school, there were still more challenges waiting for me. The workload was heavy, and I quickly realized that keeping up with the numerous subjects and constant assignments would be challenging: Not only did the subjects become more difficult, but the expectations were higher, and the exams seemed much. However, as time went on, I began to develop better time management skills and learned how to deal with my studies better.
With time, I learned to accept the challenges, knowing that every difficulty was an opportunity to get better. As I discovered, even the worst storms pass, and just as clouds give way to blue skies, my fears eventually disappeared.
4. What does “daunting” underlined in paragraph 2 mean
A. Confusing. B. Frightening. C. Surprising. D. Encouraging.
5. How did the events held by the school mainly help the writer
A. By providing academic support. B. By teaching her study methods.
C. By introducing her to her teachers. D. By involving her in community.
6. Paragraph 5 mainly about the author’s ________.
A. fearful heart B. easy adaptation C. peer pressure D. academic stress
7. What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A. The writer found high school painful. B. The writer achieved personal growth.
C. The writer considered difficulties as blocks. D. The writer found fears stayed despite efforts.

Although South Africans are known for their friendliness and warmth, our accent (口音) is not well-received, with a new study showing our accent is the world’s 12th friendliest. According to the study, only 1 in every 100 participants (参与者) considered the South African accent as the most friendly-sounding — a big drop since 2019 when it was considered the second most beautiful accent worldwide, which was an astonishing result for me.
The study found Americans had the friendliest English accent in the world with one in five seeing the American accent as the friendliest. Though the Canadian accent is the most closely related to general American English, with similar rules for pronunciation and accent, only one in 12 selected it as the friendliest accent. The British accent is considered the second most friendly accent, with one in seven selecting it as the friendliest. The Australian accent came in third place, with almost one in 10 considering it to be friendly. Although the New Zealand accent is similar to the Australian accent, New Zealanders came 15th with just 1 in 100 choosing the Kiwi accent as the friendliest.
In understanding why some accents are viewed as more friendly than others, Dr Christopher Strelluf from the University of Warwick said attitudes towards language varieties (变体) usually show the ideas “we have about people who speak those varieties”. “If people around the world think American English sounds friendly, it’s good news for Americans because it means people think of Americans as friendly people.”
“The meanings of Englishes worldwide are also changing rapidly across many dimensions (维度). For example, while British English has historically provided an international model for ‘correct’ English, people who live in countries where English is being learned for getting into the global (全球的) marketplace increasingly prefer American English as their standard,” said Strelluf.
“In this study the attitudes towards English show the basic ways we continue to find our way through social relationships using language and our thoughts about language.”
8. How does the author probably feel about the study
A. Excited. B. Doubtful. C. Surprised. D. Satisfied
9. Which of the four accents is least friendly according to the study
A. The American accent. B. The Canadian accent.
C. The Australian accent. D. The British accent.
10. What may the study lead people to think according to Strelluf
A. Americans are nice and warm. B. Americans are usually talkative.
C. Americans like language to be varied. D. Americans like to explore the world.
11. Why does Strelluf mention people’s preferred Englishes in paragraph 4
A. To show the development of the global marketplace.
B. To explain the importance of learning “correct English”.
C. To draw attention to the changing face of global English.
D. To compare the difference of English in the UK and the US.
D
When we think about high school’s lasting impact, we often focus on grade point averages, extracurricular activities, and close friendships. But according to a new study, the influence of high school stretches far beyond the teenage years and into our very bodies.
The study tracked a nationally representative sample of individuals who were high school sophomores (二年级的) and seniors in 1980. Researchers followed these participants into their early 50s and found strong links between high school experience and midlife body mass index (BMI). This relationship held even when accounting for college education, academic attainment, and weight during high school itself.
This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as crucial.
So, what parts of high school matter It turns out that attending private schools, being in high socioeconomic status (High-SES) environments, and enrolling in advanced curricular tracks were associated with lower midlife BMI, especially for women. These factors weren’t just minor contributors; they maintained their influence even after researchers controlled for a host of variables like college degrees and adult income.
Interestingly, popularity during high school also played a role for women. In a society where women and girls face heightened pressure around body image, early social acceptance may help establish healthier long-term habits and body ideals.
The gender differences in this study are striking. For women, both family and school SES, along with popularity, were significantly linked to adult weight. For men, the connection existed but was less pronounced. One possible reason The cultural landscape. Girls and women often deal with more pressure to be thin and face harsher judgment about their weight than boys and men. These pressures likely strengthen how high school experiences — both academic and social — shape long-term behaviors and self-perceptions.
12. What does the study mainly reveal about high schools
A. They predict academic success. B. They foster social relationships.
C. They determine career achievements. D. They shape long- term physical health.
13. Which factor relates to lower adult BMI for women
A. Adult income status. B. High school popularity.
C. College degree level. D. High school sports activities.
14. Why do gender differences exist in findings
A. Social expectations. B. Economic policies.
C. Educational resources. D. Biological distinctions.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Gender Differences in Educational Environments
B. The Link Between School Grades and Adult Success
C. High School’s Long- Term Impact on Physical Health
D. The Role of Social Activities in adolescent Development

A new study gives all of us some extra motivation when it comes to getting outside and exercising: every day you manage to fit in an additional one-hour walk, you could be boosting your lifespan by an extra six hours. That’s the approximate benefit if you’ re currently in the 25 percent least active people in the US, according to fitness tracker data analyzed by a team led by researchers from Griffith University in Australia.
If you’ re in the top 25 percent, an extra walk isn’t as much of a boost—you’ve already received most of the health benefits from exercise— but the study also highlights and quantifies some of the key benefits of an active life.“If all individuals were as active as the top 25 percent of the population, Americans over the age of 40 could live an extra 5.3 years on average,” write the researchers in their published paper. “It can be any type of exercise to reach that top quartile (四分位数) but would roughly be the equivalent of just about three hours of walking per day.”
The team analyzed wearable activity data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) in the US, which recruits 5,000 volunteers a year. To calculate how changes in activity levels can influence mortality (死亡) risk, researchers referenced the NHANES results against a life-table model (where mortality rates are tracked at specific age points) and previous research into exercise and lifespan. In this particular study, data on 824 participants were excluded because they didn’t wear the trackers for long enough.
Suggesting that exercise leads to a longer life is nothing new, but quantifying and simplifying the benefits can grab attention— whether it’s five minutes a day to reduce blood pressure or nine seconds a week to grow muscle. Now there’s a new target to aim for: an extra hour’s walk a day. If you find that too discouraging a prospect, remember that any amount of exercise makes a difference to health and well- being.
16. What does the new study find
A. Walking can cure some diseases effectively.
B. Perhaps daily walking can extend our lifespan.
C. Increasing exercise mostly benefits active people.
D. The less active people must exercise an hour a day.
17. How much daily walking is roughly needed to reach the top 25% active group
A. Nine seconds. B. One hour. C. Three hours. D. Five hours.
18. What is the function of Paragraph 3
A. Giving the examples. B. Analyzing the data.
C. Predicting the effect. D. Explaining the method.
19. Why does the author mention “nine seconds a week to grow muscle” in the last paragraph
A. To compare three different types of exercise.
B. To emphasize the flexibility in setting exercise goals.
C. To demonstrate the precision of modern exercise research.
D. To highlight the advantage of walking over strength training.

AI tools regularly make mistakes and make up sources. By some estimates, over half of AI-driven answers have factual errors. Children’s exposure to misleading information online isn’t new. ____20____ Even children who are online only for short periods likely see false or inaccurate information. Here’s how to help them spot it.
____21____
Any parent knows the feeling of being caught in a never-ending loop (循环) of whys from their kid. ____22____ Provide informative answers, but build their thought processes, too. “Great question, what do you think What makes you think that How would we find out what’s right ” You’ll develop their critical thinking by emphasizing the process of reasoning, not just the outcome.
Encourage skepticism (怀疑).
Children’s skepticism is context-specific. My colleagues and I have demonstrated, for example, that even four-year-olds show basic fact-checking abilities in digital contexts under the right circumstances. When they notice that a platform contained some misinformation in the past, they seek out more evidence before accepting a new claim. ____23____ For example, if you come across a doubtful AI summary, comment on it out loud.
Practice strategic disengagement (脱离).
Critical thinking is slow and deliberate. Scrolling through a social media feed is quite the opposite. Even when a questionable post arouses skepticism, that feeling might fade as soon as a newer piece of content appears. ____24____ Taking frequent breaks can stop the habit of endless, passive consumption. Another simple strategy is to teach children that if something arouses strong emotions, they should pause.
A. Use children’s natural curiosity.
B. But now AI has worsened the problem.
C. When that desire to learn strikes, join in.
D. Evaluate the quality of children’s questions.
E. Show your child you also doubt things online.
